00:00 Welcome back to another episode of Getting the Upper Land, where you get a rundown of
00:14 some of our top stories. I'm livestock editor Rebecca Nagy, and coming up this week, we're
00:19 going to feature the impact renewable energy projects are having on nearby communities,
00:24 plus what's being done to improve the consultation process. But first, in the news this week,
00:31 the use of no hormones and the fact that cows can stay in the production cycle are being
00:35 touted as some of the major benefits to using IVF technology. It's been used extensively
00:40 in the United States for the past decade, but we have some big operators in Australia
00:45 getting on board and demand is expected to keep rising. In Wagga on Thursday, the lamb
00:51 market saw another boost with the top pan of second cross lambs selling to $270. Agents
00:57 said the result wasn't totally surprising, but it is a big jump on only just two weeks
01:02 ago. And legislation to overturn the ban on virtual fencing will head back to Parliament
01:09 in mid February. Virtual fencing is used in other states and in New Zealand, and researchers
01:14 say it can reduce staff workloads and the animals respond to the technology quite quickly.
01:20 There's concerns that pay cuts to the local land services directors and chairs will affect
01:26 how the organisation functions. From May 15, local board members pay is going to drop from
01:32 $20,000 a year down to just $5,000, while local board chairs will halve from $60,000
01:38 a year to $30,000. Producers have been warned it's one of the worst seasons for bush and
01:45 paralysis ticks from the Hunter Valley to mid north coast. The combination of flooding
01:51 followed by drought and humidity has created ideal breeding conditions. And a major goat
01:57 operation in western New South Wales is hoping to develop its own brand of goat meat to sell
02:02 to the domestic market. Mount Hope station is one of three neighbouring properties that
02:07 runs about 24,000 head of boar goats. As well as their push to make moves domestically,
02:13 the operation is also carrying out some massive fencing upgrades as well as on farm trials.
