00:00 Hello and happy Friday, it's Angus here at the Bureau of Meteorology and welcome to summer.
00:04 It's the 1st of December today, which is the first day of the summer months, meteorologically speaking.
00:09 December, January and February.
00:11 And we have released a summer outlook, you can find a bit of info on that on our website
00:15 or through our socials.
00:16 This video doesn't go out that far, this is more like a weekend outlook for the next couple
00:20 of days.
00:21 And the number one story this weekend really is we're expecting further rainfall falling
00:25 onto saturated parts of southeastern Australia, which have had a whole heap of rain in the
00:30 past couple of days.
00:32 But there's signs of change with warm, dry weather moving into parts of the country
00:35 this weekend and that will spread out across these wet areas too early next week.
00:40 Let's start with a look at Saturday.
00:42 It's a dry and mild day for Western Australia, a little bit cooler for Perth, generally fine
00:46 through South Australia and much of NT too.
00:49 Scattered storms and showers across northern NT and northeastern Queensland, but the more
00:53 notable rain is down in this part of the country here.
00:56 There's already been 200-300mm of rain across this border region between Victoria and NSW
01:02 over the past couple of days and that has led to extensive flood impacts in the southeast
01:07 with a lot of rivers running high here.
01:09 So we don't really want more rain in this part of the country but it is going to be
01:12 wet on Saturday.
01:14 Not as much rain as what's fallen already, the intensity has come down a little bit but
01:18 certainly some further wet weather there falling onto the saturated landscape, the swollen
01:23 flooded rivers likely to prolong the flood impacts across southeastern Australia.
01:27 Between Melbourne and Sydney is where most of the rain is forecast but it's heaviest
01:31 right near the border.
01:32 Into Sunday, rain will continue for this part of the country through most of the day, again
01:36 unfortunately eventually it will clear but before it does so, another solid dose of rain,
01:40 particularly around far eastern Victoria, that Gippsland region is in line for a very
01:45 soggy weekend.
01:46 Elsewhere, not much changes, dry and settled through South Australia and much of WA but
01:50 a smattering of storms across northern Australia again on Sunday.
01:54 Let's look at the full weekend rainfall forecast, spotty figures through Queensland and Northern
01:59 Territory, that's not a surprise given the stormy weather up there, between 5 and 25mm
02:04 for most places.
02:06 The more significant accumulations, no surprise, across southeastern Australia where we could
02:10 see this weekend, into the purples, 100mm, not out of the question, remember that's coming
02:15 on top of 250mm for some of these areas over the past few days so it's a lot more rainfall
02:20 to go before things will dry up.
02:23 But there is a clearing trend on the way, actually let's check out temperatures, that
02:27 sort of tells the story, it's very warm and dry through central parts of Western Australia,
02:31 although a little bit more mild along the coastline, upper 20s around Perth on Saturday
02:35 but 40s for inland areas.
02:38 Still cool down here in the southeast, cloudy, showery, onshore southeasterly winds keeping
02:43 temperatures around 18 degrees through parts of Victoria and Tasmania, 20s around New South
02:48 Wales, about seasonal there, and warmer weather across the north but not too out of the ordinary
02:53 for this time of year.
02:55 Into Sunday though we start to see those high 30s and 40s really spread out across the centre
02:59 and the south, getting much warmer through South Australia, really warm through the west
03:03 and the north, still a little bit more mild here in the southeast but as we progress to
03:07 next week we're going to see this warmth through the centre really start to spread out.
03:11 These places will dry up and they will warm up and it's going to be the first bout of
03:15 summer warmth heading to most of you next week.
03:19 If you'd like to see the temperatures through the next 7 days, find your extended outlook
03:22 at bom.gov.au and of course you can always get us on the BOM Weather app too.
03:27 That is it, thanks for watching, have a great weekend.
