00:00Hello from the Bureau with your national weather forecast for Monday the 23rd of September.
00:05As we head into Tuesday and the rest of the week, the main weather story will be a rain
00:09band across central and northern Australia that will push towards eastern parts of the
00:12country in the coming days.
00:14Let's start off with a look at the synoptic map, and heading into Monday evening, we can
00:18see widespread rain, showers and storms all the way from Western Australia, the Northern
00:22Territory and western parts of South Australia.
00:24That's being caused by a lot of tropical moisture being dragged down from the north
00:28and onto the land.
00:30We've already seen unseasonal rainfall totals of up to 80mm, and with more on the way, we
00:35do have a flood watch as current, so make sure you have the latest information and check
00:39out our dedicated severe weather video update that will be available later on Monday afternoon
00:44on our website and social media channels.
00:47Away from that rain though, we do have a cold front brushing the south coast of WA, but
00:50across eastern Australia this large high pressure system is generating milder and drier conditions
00:56as we head into Monday night.
00:58On Tuesday, we see this area of rain extending further towards the east, and we could see
01:03a pulse of very heavy rainfall heading into Tuesday afternoon, with heavy force possible
01:07about the WA-NT border.
01:10Across the south though, this cold front will barrel towards Victoria and Tasmania later
01:13in the day, and this cold front will actually drag down a lot of tropical moisture from
01:17the north, so we will see rain increasing for Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales,
01:21particularly heading into Wednesday and also Thursday.
01:25So now a state by state look, starting off in Queensland, there is the possibility of
01:29morning fog about the southeast of the state, warming the west with high fire dangers, but
01:33patchy showers will develop later in the afternoon, but not expecting widespread and heavy rainfall
01:38totals at this stage.
01:39A few showers for the northeast tropical coast, otherwise looking mostly dry, Brisbane partly
01:44cloudy and 26 degrees.
01:46In New South Wales, a warm day with a little bit of fog about the northern Tablelands,
01:50but then showers will extend from the west in the afternoon.
01:53At this stage, most of the showers will be west of a line from Mount Burke down towards
01:57Griffith, but it will be warm ahead of that and dry in the east, partly cloudy and 25
02:02in Sydney, 24 degrees in Canberra.
02:04In Victoria, a milder day on the way with 23 degrees in Melbourne, warm in the Mallee,
02:0828 for Mildura with high fire danger, but then that cold front and showers do extend
02:13from the west later in the evening.
02:15Melbourne could see a late shower, but that main rain band will come through on Wednesday
02:19and push across the rest of the state.
02:21In Tasmania, dry to start initially with a little bit of frost around the morning,
02:25but then showers extend from the northwest, mostly dry across the east including for Hobart
02:29atop of 17 degrees, with most of the rain only coming through on Wednesday.
02:34In South Australia, a little bit of fog around the limestone coast, but then showers and
02:37storms will become more prevalent extending towards the east later in the day, at a late
02:41atop of 22 degrees with showers increasing in the afternoon and evening.
02:46Over in the west, plenty of rainfall from the Pilbara all the way towards the interior
02:50of WA, and we could see some heavy falls throughout the day.
02:54Away from that though, a couple of showers about the southwest, and for Perth, a morning
02:57shower and then a partly cloudy atop of 22 degrees.
03:01Across northern Australia, plenty of rainfall, heavy falls possible with thunderstorms if
03:05possible, flash flooding, and also we could see some impacts to transport and roads through
03:10the area.
03:11We are looking at a top of 34 degrees in Darwin, with a couple of showers about the top end,
03:15but most of that rainfall will be further south towards southern parts of the NT.
03:19That's your forecast for today, make sure you have the latest warnings and updates through
03:22the week on our website and social media channels, and we'll see you next time.
