00:00:00 These guys are ridiculous.
00:00:07 Now, how about them damn Celtics?
00:00:10 We are back with another episode of How 'bout them Celtics Seminar here recording on Monday, November 20th after the Celtics loss to the Charlotte Hornets.
00:00:19 And we can start there because that's what we're going to be talking about for the most of this episode today.
00:00:24 The Celtics lost to the Hornets by a final score. Let me pull it up of 121 to 118 in overtime, and they were up by I think 11 points with like two minutes left in or five minutes left.
00:00:38 Whatever it was, they're up 11 in the fourth quarter, up 18 in the second quarter, and they blew the game.
00:00:42 Hornets came back to win behind a monster performance by Lamella Ball, who was awesome all night to put it simply.
00:00:48 15 to 27, 5 to 11, 36, 9 and 8. He was great. Tatum had 45, 13 and 6 of his own.
00:00:54 He had a great game, but the Celtics couldn't pull it out. Late game execution absolutely killed them.
00:01:00 Jalen Brown, Christoph Swerzingus and Sam Houser combined to shoot two of 22 from three.
00:01:06 That's not a great way to win a basketball game. And Celtics blew a huge lead in a game they should have won, even with Derek White and Al Horford out.
00:01:14 This is the worst game of the season. Rough loss for the Celtics to a Hornets team that is not very good.
00:01:22 The Hornets are not a good team. This is a game they had in the bag. I think they were up double digits with a couple minutes left, right?
00:01:30 Yeah.
00:01:31 Just garbage. Feels like I watched last year's team and they made me $100. I'm still upset.
00:01:38 They made me wait an extra five minutes for this game to be over with. I'm going to have to be up later than I would like to be.
00:01:44 I've been up since 1am today and I would like to be done. So now I sat up and I watched them play like shit for five minutes.
00:01:56 Tatum letting Hayward get a backdoor cut for the game tying dunk. And then of course they can't get a good shot on the next possession.
00:02:06 Jalen Brown, very rough day for him. 5.17 missed Chris Topps wide open and instead pulled a three in crunch time.
00:02:13 Chris Topps wide open under the basket. He wasn't great today either. Eight threes from him, probably a bit much.
00:02:19 You said it already, two of 22 is not what you want from some of your top guys. So pretty frustrating one.
00:02:27 It's really not cool when they don't make free throws. That sucks. They missed three key free throws in this game.
00:02:35 Kind of happy that Tatum one missed. Honestly, 10 total. I did not want to watch double overtime.
00:02:40 This game should not have went to overtime. They had a, I want to say 17 point lead at one point.
00:02:46 This shit needs to stop happening. Like I know that the Celtics are what now? 10 and three or 11 and three.
00:02:55 11 and three to start the season. Good start, but they're still showing some warning signs of the teams we've watched over the past three, four years.
00:03:09 You can't trust them with a big lead. You can't entirely trust them to close games. Have they been better at closing games? Yes.
00:03:17 This tonight, just dog shit down the stretch. Bad misses, bad plays from just about everybody involved. And I am top tier upset.
00:03:28 Yeah. I mean, these last two games, this game and the Grizzlies game, you've really seen some of those things that made the Celtics so untrustable in years past.
00:03:37 I don't know how many turnovers they ended within this one, but when it was turnovers and offensive rebounds given up against the Grizzlies tonight was just late game execution.
00:03:46 And in the clutch too, they gave up 17 offensive boards to the Hornets tonight. Not very good.
00:03:55 Last couple of minutes, Mark Williams got one. Somebody else got one crunch time. You can't give a team extra possessions,
00:04:01 especially as you're melting away and letting Lamella ball of all players absolutely cook you and you have no answer for him.
00:04:08 Gordon Hayward giving you clutch time buckets. What is going on? Play some defense. Finish the game.
00:04:16 Double digitally with two minutes to go. I have to watch an overtime and then watch a loss. Unbelievable. At least I got paid for it.
00:04:24 Yeah, it was really bad. Lamella making everything. I mean, he had a ton of open space and too many shots.
00:04:31 And by the point the Celtics started finding ways to get in his face, he was just making everything.
00:04:37 And when a guy as talented as he is finds a rhythm, there's not much you can do past that.
00:04:41 Their power forward, whose name I don't even want to say because that's just the worst person who could have possibly beat you in that situation.
00:04:50 Him and Mark Williams combined for 31 rebounds. Mark Williams had eight offensive rebounds on his own, four for Brandon Miller.
00:04:58 There was a play late in the game. Obviously, there was the Jason Tatum letting Gordon Hayward pass him baseline to get an open bucket to tie the game.
00:05:08 But one before that, I think it was Hayward who flew in or maybe it was Brandon Miller or Mark Williams.
00:05:13 Christophs was boxing out Mark Williams and then Jalen Brown and Jason Tatum are looking up with their mouths agape and somebody flies in for an offensive rebound and puts it back.
00:05:24 It's the low effort plays that ended up costing the Celtics in this one.
00:05:29 John Smyers, who is a loyal listener of the pod, shout out John, was messaging on Twitter, replying to me on Twitter saying he believes it was Drew Holiday's fault.
00:05:38 I respond that I don't think he's the main focal point to hear, but he also wasn't great.
00:05:41 He had a rough stretch down the end of the game. He drove when he probably should have kicked it to Tatum, who Tatum needed the ball every possession down the stretch.
00:05:48 He had a bad end stretch of the game. He took one shot that Howard Hayward found on a good shot, let him get baseline.
00:05:54 He needed the ball every possession in the fourth quarter. He was that good the rest of the game.
00:05:58 There was no reason that Jalen Brown should have been chucking. Drew Holiday should have been going to the rim.
00:06:02 And then Drew Holiday missed those two free throws. But I don't think you look at this game and say Drew Holiday was the main problem.
00:06:07 He was a problem, but a lot of guys were a problem. Christophs for Zingas couldn't hit a shot. One of eight from three.
00:06:12 Not only that, but one more three and I would have won my parlay. So that would have been nice.
00:06:18 But he couldn't make a shot. Jalen Brown was absolutely terrible. And what made his performance even worse was the fact that he was chucking horrible shots at the end of the game.
00:06:28 If you are not playing well, don't take shots at the end of the game. Jalen Brown took 17 shots, 0 of 5 from 3.
00:06:34 I wish I could see the stats, but he was taking huge shots at the end of the game for no reason.
00:06:43 If you're that cold, know you're that cold and make plays for somebody else. Don't take an 18 foot pull up with two minutes left.
00:06:50 Thank God poor Zingas got the putback so he could erase that problem. Jalen Brown missed a free throw in the end.
00:06:56 Jalen Brown got more shots than Jason Tatum did in the final three minutes of the game it seemed like.
00:07:01 Which makes no sense. There was no sensibility to the way the Celtics were playing offense in this game.
00:07:07 Chris Stops couldn't hit a shot. Sam Houser couldn't hit a shot. Jason Tatum went cold at the end a little bit and he didn't get enough touches for the game he was having.
00:07:16 Drew Holiday made some mistakes in there. Everything that could have gone wrong offensively went wrong.
00:07:22 And then defensively, they were just giving way too much space to Lamoa Ball at the start of the game.
00:07:27 And then Mark Williams and Brandon Miller and everyone else lived on the glass for the Hornets.
00:07:31 Which was frustrating to see. It was just like this was the worst game of the season.
00:07:36 I'm not going to sit here and say everything is crumbling and going to shit because of these two bad losses.
00:07:42 But you need to look at this and correct it moving forward.
00:07:45 It's so bad it's two bad losses.
00:07:48 Sorry, two bad games.
00:07:51 It feels like it.
00:07:52 The same stuff was happening in the Memphis game.
00:07:54 The same stuff was happening against Toronto. They got away with it.
00:07:57 This is three straight games of nonsense at the end.
00:08:00 They had a good win against Philly where they battled out and Derek White carried them over the finish line.
00:08:05 It's almost like they're missing Derek White tonight.
00:08:07 I don't care. I don't care. I don't want to hear. And I know that's not what you're saying.
00:08:12 But like anybody that's like they didn't have Horford, they didn't have Derek White.
00:08:16 You know what they did have is an 11 point lead with two plus to play.
00:08:21 Just unacceptable stuff.
00:08:24 Charlotte's a bottom feeder team. Shouldn't happen.
00:08:28 This won't matter in six months or whatever.
00:08:30 Exactly.
00:08:31 Today it's annoying.
00:08:33 It cost me sleep.
00:08:35 It cost me some happiness.
00:08:39 The most frustrating part to me is Brown taking bad shots when Tatum was that hot.
00:08:45 That I 100% agree with.
00:08:48 I really want to see. I want the box score to update so I can click on it and check stuff.
00:08:54 It felt like Tatum took two shots down the stretch of the game.
00:08:57 I just remember seeing the NBC Sports graphic saying 5-15 and then he's still taking shots.
00:09:04 I'm like what is going on here?
00:09:06 It's like Jason Tatum, what did he finish with?
00:09:10 Jason Tatum finished with 45 points on 15 of 28 shooting 7 of 15 from 3.
00:09:15 He played fucking awesome.
00:09:17 He was on.
00:09:19 He did get some shots on the stretch but there were two layups and he missed them both.
00:09:23 So I'll save some of the blame that I'm going to throw out there.
00:09:28 Because Jason Tatum did miss a couple layups down the stretch that were huge.
00:09:31 And he did miss the free throw that would have tied the game and sent us a double OT.
00:09:34 But it felt like the shots Tatum was getting and the layups Tatum was getting was because he created them for himself.
00:09:42 And what I want to see is the Celtics run offense to get Jason Tatum a shot.
00:09:47 Not let Tatum be the offense.
00:09:49 Well that's not exactly what I mean.
00:09:51 I feel like that doesn't happen all that often.
00:09:53 I know, I know.
00:09:54 What I more mean was I want Tatum to be the offense but not in the sense of everyone clear out and let Tatum take a shot.
00:10:02 I want Tatum to get in the post and work out of the post.
00:10:05 I want Tatum to get a screen at the top of the key.
00:10:07 There were too many here you go Tatum figure it out.
00:10:10 That was all the looks he got at the end.
00:10:12 There wasn't a screen and roll.
00:10:13 There wasn't a handoff.
00:10:15 There wasn't an off ball screen to get him open.
00:10:18 There wasn't a post up.
00:10:19 It was all just since he was hot he's going to do whatever on the perimeter.
00:10:23 And then when he wasn't doing that he didn't fucking touch the ball.
00:10:26 The last play of the game was horrendous by the way.
00:10:28 Regulation was horrendous.
00:10:30 Which one? The Hauser one?
00:10:31 No it wasn't.
00:10:33 Well it was the Hauser shot but they just cleared a side for Tatum.
00:10:37 And he just stood there and waited for the double to come.
00:10:39 He didn't do anything.
00:10:41 I think was that the one where Hauser got the shot though?
00:10:44 Yes.
00:10:45 I think Keith was saying it on Twitter Keith Smith and he was like
00:10:48 Hauser should have been.
00:10:50 I can't trust the internet to keep my game up to speed.
00:10:52 Not to get it spoiled.
00:10:54 I think what he's saying is Hauser went too far to the top of the key
00:10:58 so he could get doubled.
00:10:59 I think what the Celtics wanted was Hauser more on the wing
00:11:02 so Lomelo couldn't help off Hauser.
00:11:04 But then since Hauser was so far to the top of the key
00:11:07 he just helped off of Hauser.
00:11:09 And so then the Hornets could send other, they could rotate to Hauser instead.
00:11:12 There was like a spacing issue that was noticed.
00:11:14 When it should have been a Tatum one on one post up turnaround midi.
00:11:17 That looked like what they were working for in that case.
00:11:20 A one on one for Tatum but then he got doubled.
00:11:22 I don't think that was what the play was supposed to be is what I'm saying.
00:11:26 Which is a problem within itself as well.
00:11:29 That broke down so easily for the Celtics.
00:11:32 This was just such a mess man.
00:11:34 It was so bad.
00:11:35 Jalen Brown was so, so, so, so bad.
00:11:38 Kristaps was awful as well.
00:11:40 He couldn't hit a shot to save himself.
00:11:42 And he was, I mean he got inside.
00:11:44 Pretty much anybody not named Peyton Pritchard in Tatum bad.
00:11:48 Pritchard, that's another thing.
00:11:50 Not, I don't think Joe was like one of the biggest problems in this game.
00:11:53 But like, why is Hauser in over Pritchard at the end?
00:11:56 In those points.
00:11:57 Like that didn't make any sense to me.
00:11:58 Like defensively I guess because of height but.
00:12:01 Like Hauser was, I mean Pritchard was 5 of 8 from 3, 8 of 14 from the field.
00:12:06 Hauser finished 1 of 9 on all 3's.
00:12:09 Like it didn't make any sense to me that Pritchard wasn't in those spots.
00:12:12 I just think they probably felt like with tight defense Hauser can be somebody
00:12:18 that has a better chance of getting a shot off because he's taller.
00:12:22 I guess.
00:12:23 Sounds dumb on the surface but on a catch and shoot it's kind of important
00:12:26 with them not creating space.

00:13:08 [music]
00:13:12 I know what you mean.
00:13:13 I will also say though there could have been a benefit to having another
00:13:16 shot creator out there because Holiday Brown and Porzingis
00:13:18 couldn't fucking do anything.
00:13:20 So having Pritchard out there who was comfortable creating his own shot
00:13:22 could have helped.
00:13:24 I didn't think Drew Holiday was-- I mean seven turnovers now that I'm
00:13:27 looking at it is bad.
00:13:28 I still didn't think he was like the biggest problem in this game.
00:13:31 Obviously seven turnovers he wasn't good.
00:13:33 It wasn't a good Drew Holiday game.
00:13:34 This was a game where you probably would have relied-- I'll phrase it this
00:13:38 way for you.
00:13:39 This is a game they probably would have relied too heavily on Derek
00:13:42 White's offensive creation because no one else had it.
00:13:45 But then at the same time you have Pritchard in there so let him play
00:13:49 that role because he was on and he was awesome in this game.
00:13:52 I know, rightfully so, we're going to spend a lot of this podcast
00:13:55 talking negative about this game but just for a couple minutes here
00:13:59 Pritchard was fucking awesome.
00:14:01 This is the preseason Pritchard that the Celtics have wanted to see all
00:14:04 season that Celtics fans have been begging for.
00:14:06 And obviously it showed up because he had 21 points, 8 of 14, 5 of 8,
00:14:10 but two steals, three assists, six rebounds, two of which offensive.
00:14:13 He was doing everything for the Celtics in this game.
00:14:16 I think he should have been in the game more.
00:14:18 This is the type of game you want to see from a Pritchard who should be
00:14:22 one of your first guys off the bench, who should be a consistent source
00:14:26 of offense, who should be able to play 30 minutes in a game, which he
00:14:30 did.
00:14:31 He ended with 33 minutes in this game.
00:14:33 This is the Pritchard that the Celtics signed to a four-year extension
00:14:36 with hopes of him being a regular piece of their rotation moving forward.
00:14:40 So if anything, because as much as Tatum was great, he fell apart there
00:14:44 at the end with letting Hayward get by, two mislayups, a mis-free throw.
00:14:47 He had a rough close.
00:14:48 Jaylen Brown was bad.
00:14:49 Porzingis was bad.
00:14:50 Duralde was bad.
00:14:51 If there's any bright spot to take away, it is that Peyton Pritchard
00:14:53 is fully capable of being great again.
00:14:55 And this wasn't a Peyton Pritchard was great game, and he had one
00:14:58 decent stretch.
00:14:59 He started hot, but he was a consistent source of offense for them
00:15:02 throughout the game.
00:15:03 And for what it's worth, that bench lineup where it was all bench guys
00:15:07 was good.
00:15:08 Like Cornette was a plus 25 in 18 minutes.
00:15:11 O'Shea Bursette was a plus 17 in 22 minutes.
00:15:13 Pritchard was a plus 16 in 33 minutes.
00:15:15 Those lineups where it was Pritchard creating the offense against the Hornets
00:15:18 were good, and it was because Pritchard was on and Porzingis and Brown
00:15:21 were not.
00:15:22 And so I understand, and I think 99% of people on this earth, if you had
00:15:28 asked them before, "Hey, if Pritchard's hot, would you put him in over
00:15:31 Porzingis or Brown?"
00:15:32 You say no, because it's clearly two better players.
00:15:37 But over Hauser, I think Pritchard needed to be in this game.
00:15:39 He was far too good.
00:15:41 And again, we're going to talk more bad about this game, I assume,
00:15:44 throughout the pod.
00:15:45 But Pritchard was a huge bright spot and an important thing to note
00:15:49 from this one.
00:15:50 Yeah, you burned a good Pritchard game.
00:15:52 It seems like with the accommodation of Pritchard and Hauser, only one of
00:15:57 them is allowed to play good at the same time because Hauser has been
00:16:01 red hot over the last week.
00:16:03 I think there was one.
00:16:04 Yeah, the Pacers game when they just beat-- everybody made shots.
00:16:08 Over the last three weeks, Hauser's been great.
00:16:12 Pritchard has had flashes, I guess, but he's mostly been inconsistent.
00:16:16 Now he finally steps up and Hauser's one of nine.
00:16:19 It's just kind of a sick joke.
00:16:22 I also don't know what the splits are, Jack, but off the top of my head,
00:16:26 I remember Hauser being poor in now both of his two starts this year.
00:16:30 So maybe keep him on the bench.
00:16:33 He was one of nine tonight, and in his first start of the season, which
00:16:38 was the Philly game, he was three of nine, two of eight.
00:16:42 Yeah, not great.
00:16:43 Yeah, bad.
00:16:45 Very bad.
00:16:47 The plus minuses are remarkable in this game.
00:16:50 The Tatum minus five with a 45 ball on Charlotte.
00:16:54 But I think the plus minuses tell you just how bad Porzingis, Brown,
00:16:58 and Hauser were in this game.
00:16:59 Those missed threes, as much as it's very-- look at the box score.
00:17:04 Duh, they're bad.
00:17:06 The fact that they missed those threes was so significant because when
00:17:10 those guys were in the game, the Hornets were able to just focus on Tatum,
00:17:13 lock him up.
00:17:14 And if those guys aren't hitting-- or when Tatum's out, those guys are
00:17:17 usually-- it's usually Tatum and Holiday together paired, and it was tonight,
00:17:21 and Brown and Porzingis.
00:17:23 Those guys were so cold and so bad offensively that the Hornets were able
00:17:26 to use the minutes when Tatum was off the floor to come back and make up
00:17:31 25 points effectively because Tatum was a minus five in a game
00:17:35 the Celtics lost by three, but that minus five was lumped into the minutes
00:17:40 he played with Porzingis and Brown and Hauser.
00:17:42 The minutes when Tatum was on the floor with Holiday, outside of those guys,
00:17:46 he was probably a plus.
00:17:47 It was because that's how ineffective those guys were on offense.
00:17:51 When Jalen Brown is off, he is off, and I think that's a huge reason why
00:17:55 there's a subset of Celtics fans who are hesitant about the contract extension,
00:17:58 who are down on him.
00:17:59 I've been very critical of Jalen over the past couple years.
00:18:02 When he is not making shots, this season he's been better because he's been
00:18:08 a better playmaker, and he had a great pass in this one, and throughout
00:18:11 the course of the season he has done a better job of knowing when he's
00:18:14 cold and stopping taking shots.
00:18:16 This was the Jalen Brown that far too often has popped up over the past
00:18:20 two seasons because Jalen Brown was ice cold in this game,
00:18:23 and he just kept shooting.
00:18:25 He just kept shooting, and it was to the detriment of the Celtics
00:18:30 by the end of the game because I remember vividly three shots,
00:18:33 two threes and one turnaround middie that were not even close to going in,
00:18:37 and they were just complete pull-ups, contested awful shots in either
00:18:41 the final three minutes of regulation and in overtime.
00:18:45 Those shots need to go to Jason Tatum, or the Celtics need to run a play.
00:18:50 Jalen Brown completely stalled the offense in those moments,
00:18:53 and Kristaps Rozingas was also bad, but it felt like more of his shots
00:18:56 were within the flow of the offense.
00:18:57 He was just cold.
00:18:58 Jalen Brown took shots that hurt the Celtics because he was forcing it,
00:19:02 and I think that's where the problem is,
00:19:04 and that's where his problem has been in recent years.
00:19:06 Again, been a lot better this year, but it was really bad tonight.
00:19:09 I feel like the forcing is real.
00:19:11 I feel like there were a lot of opportunities he had to continue
00:19:15 to dominate his two-man game with Rozingas,
00:19:18 and he just didn't elect to do so.
00:19:21 Like you said, settled for some threes, settled for some tough turnarounds.
00:19:25 That one play just has burned into my brain of him firing up a contested three.
00:19:30 Well, Rozingas has his long ass wingspan--
00:19:34 Was that in the fourth quarter or OT?
00:19:36 It was with the clock winding down in either the fourth or OT.
00:19:40 I'm going to find it.
00:19:41 I think it might have been OT.
00:19:42 And Rozingas has his long ass wingspan fully extended calling for the ball
00:19:47 with nobody near him underneath the basket,
00:19:51 and instead Jalen fires up a three.
00:19:53 I found it for you.
00:19:55 You can keep talking.
00:19:56 I'm right.
00:19:57 Yeah, okay, I'm remembering correctly.
00:20:00 Here's Jason Tatum gets double-teamed with top of the key Jalen Brown.
00:20:03 Right here, right here, three!
00:20:06 This was such an awful shot.
00:20:07 Rozingas, for audio listeners, wide open under the hoop.
00:20:10 Jalen Brown could have easily found him because--
00:20:14 You know what the worst part is?
00:20:16 The worst part is here.
00:20:17 Jalen Brown could have easily kicked the ball to the corner
00:20:20 or to an open Pritchard or found Rozingas in the paint.
00:20:23 And either one would have--
00:20:25 I'm not saying he should have passed Pritchard.
00:20:26 He obviously should have passed Rozingas.
00:20:28 But my point is either one would have been better than this.
00:20:32 Contested three.
00:20:34 What are we doing?
00:20:36 For what?
00:20:38 Jalen Brown was so bad.
00:20:40 He hit front rim.
00:20:42 And Chris Stobbs hit a bunch of front rim tonight too.
00:20:46 So I think it was--
00:20:47 I don't know if it was tired legs.
00:20:49 The dunk he would have had there.
00:20:50 Good point.
00:20:52 This was--
00:20:54 I mean, this isn't me making excuses for Rozingas.
00:20:58 But it just felt like he was short on everything.
00:21:01 While I talk more, I'm going to throw up these shots.
00:21:04 Jalen Brown--
00:21:06 The dunk attempts were funny.
00:21:08 It just felt like--
00:21:09 No, I'm not saying these are bad shots.
00:21:11 I'm fine with that being aggressive on that one.
00:21:13 I'm just pulling these up while I talk.
00:21:16 It felt like every time Jalen Brown got the ball,
00:21:18 he was only looking for himself.
00:21:20 And like you said, he's had a great two-man game with Porzingis.
00:21:24 For the audio listeners, we're watching Jalen Brown shots in the fourth and OT on YouTube now.
00:21:28 But he was just pulling.
00:21:30 And that was--
00:21:31 The one we just watched was a late shot, clock one.
00:21:33 And something just got bailed out with a rough foul call there.
00:21:36 I know he's blocking.
00:21:37 But every time Jalen Brown got the ball, he was only looking for himself.
00:21:40 He could have tried to find Porzingis on the roll.
00:21:43 That shot went in.
00:21:44 But it just felt like he was so focused on breaking his slump.
00:21:48 And I think that's where the mindset disconnect is at times.
00:21:52 Some players are like, "I'm cold. Let me look for others."
00:21:55 And it just feels like for Jalen, a lot of the mindset is, "I'm cold.
00:21:59 I need to stop being cold. I need to find my shot."
00:22:02 And against the Celtics tonight, it really, really, really hurt them at the end there.
00:22:08 And I don't want this to turn into me saying he was the only reason they lost.
00:22:11 He wasn't.
00:22:12 Porzingis was cold.
00:22:13 Holiday had seven turnovers.
00:22:14 Tatum had some stupid plays at the end.
00:22:17 And how's he going to make a shot?
00:22:19 You can't just pull up free throws.
00:22:20 How you can pull up missed shots in the box score.
00:22:22 You can just watch Tatum, Chris Stopps, Drew Holiday miss big free throws in this game.
00:22:28 Do you want me to pull it up?
00:22:29 I can find them for you.
00:22:30 Can you actually pull up missed free throws on the box score?
00:22:33 Not in the box score, but I can go--
00:22:35 I don't actually want to watch it.
00:22:37 You can go into play-by-play and pick through them, yeah, so you can see them.
00:22:40 J.M. Brown wasn't the only reason they lost, but I do believe he was--
00:22:44 the biggest offensive reason they lost was a lot of the forced shots he had in the late game.
00:22:48 But I just think it was an effort thing, as it has been for the past couple games.
00:22:53 Like you mentioned Toronto and Memphis.
00:22:54 Like, 17 offensive rebounds is so bad.
00:22:57 And I think a lot of it falls on Tatum and Brown.
00:23:02 A good offensive rebounding team, to Mark Williams's credit.
00:23:06 Mark Williams is a great offensive rebounder, yeah.
00:23:08 But you just can't let that happen when it's a close game with the time winding down.
00:23:15 That's what we saw all through the last couple seasons.
00:23:18 And it's why you couldn't trust those guys as far as you could throw them.
00:23:22 This year it was starting to look different.
00:23:24 Even though they looked really bad against Toronto and they looked bad against Memphis,
00:23:27 you still had-- at least one of us believed in them in those games.
00:23:32 I did not believe tonight.
00:23:33 I bet against them.
00:23:35 I was in, but as soon as the Hornets started getting some good looks down the stretch,
00:23:40 I knew it was-- I knew the Celtics were going to fumble this.
00:23:44 They allowed four offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter and one in overtime.
00:23:48 Which means, what, that's 12 through the first three quarters as well?
00:23:52 It was just a consistent onslaught of poor effort on the defensive glass for the Celtics.
00:23:57 The Celtics were one of the better defensive rebounding teams last year.
00:24:00 They're the number one defensive rebounding team this year.
00:24:03 It doesn't make sense why their opponents-- they are giving up the ninth fewest,
00:24:10 so their top ten in fewest offensive rebounds allowed.
00:24:13 It just feels like the timing of these offensive rebounds--
00:24:16 it's been more in the past couple games.
00:24:18 I bet if I sorted this by the last two games, it would be a lot worse.
00:24:23 But it just feels like they give up a lot of timely ones.
00:24:28 Which is weird because as a whole--
00:24:32 Timely plays are the important part of the game.
00:24:34 On the show, we discuss it all the time.
00:24:37 There are timely stretches throughout every single game
00:24:39 that can be considered clutch moments.
00:24:42 It doesn't have to be five minutes within five points of each other.
00:24:46 And that's the only clutch--
00:24:48 No, that's what I'm saying.
00:24:49 I'm saying the numbers say they're a good team at keeping--
00:24:53 they're good at keeping teams off the offensive glass,
00:24:55 but all of the rebounds-- offensive rebounds they do allow
00:24:58 come at the worst possible time.
00:25:00 And over the last three games, the Celtics have allowed--
00:25:03 I'm trying to do quick math in my head--
00:25:05 48 offensive rebounds in the last three games, which is what?
00:25:09 What's 48 divided by 3? Quick maths.
00:25:11 16 offensive rebounds a game.
00:25:14 Oh, you said 48.
00:25:15 That's horrible. That is so, so bad.
00:25:18 Rough loss, again, like Sam said,
00:25:21 this loss probably won't matter in X amount of months.
00:25:24 But it is frustrating and it is significant because of the way they lost
00:25:28 and the way they've been playing the last three games.
00:25:30 They have a huge game against the Bucs on Wednesday,
00:25:33 and I don't really care because those are the games they get up for anyways.
00:25:38 You need to beat these lower teams.
00:25:40 No, I mean, I care.
00:25:41 Well, no, I care about it in the sense of a game,
00:25:44 but I'm not going to use that game as a marker for--
00:25:47 or the Celtics are back.
00:25:49 They'll be back when they beat the Pacers by 51 again.
00:25:51 You know what I'm saying?
00:25:52 They need to get back to where they were at the start of the season.
00:25:54 Yeah, they've definitely started to slip over the last stretch here
00:25:57 because, oh boy, the 50 point wins.
00:26:02 What a time it was to be alive.
00:26:04 Now you're having to watch overtime games.
00:26:08 They better win the in-season tournament game on Friday.
00:26:12 [laughs]
00:26:13 Which I say with some seriousness because I actually want them to do well.
00:26:18 Yeah, no, I know. I agree.
00:26:20 All right, let's go into the emails.
00:26:23 Before we do the emails, what's pop--
00:26:26 Oh, yes, yes, you're right.
00:26:29 Let's hit the what's poppin' wheel.
00:26:32 Popnito winner. I'm just updating the sheet
00:26:34 because we forgot to do this at the start
00:26:35 because I think we were both kind of--
00:26:37 We'll say a little heated over the game.
00:26:40 But in Popnito, let me throw it on the screen for you
00:26:43 and go to the wheel.
00:26:46 All right, not as many enters this time,
00:26:48 so you five that entered have a much better chance.
00:26:50 Let's see who's winning some popcorn this time around.
00:26:53 Literally the last time everybody entered.
00:26:56 And the winner, so fitting, RJ.
00:27:00 Finally gets some popcorn.
00:27:03 RJ, I mean, you email us enough to know that I'll hit you with an email.
00:27:06 We'll get you set up.
00:27:07 I assume you'll see this, but we'll get you hooked up, RJ.
00:27:11 Shout out to you.
00:27:12 Comment what's poppin' on this podcast for a chance to win
00:27:15 some in-Popnito popcorn.
00:27:17 It'll be a good time.
00:27:19 And yeah, we'll get you hooked up.
00:27:21 Comment what's poppin' with your comment,
00:27:23 and you'll be entered in the next giveaway for some popcorn.
00:27:26 I guess I'll leave in Popnito on the screen, though,
00:27:29 because it is what's poppin' time.
00:27:30 It is time to check in with our emails.
00:27:32 Let's see what people had to say.
00:27:34 And if my memory serves correct,
00:27:37 we do have plenty of emails from our guy RJ anyway.
00:27:40 So I think we'll be seeing some stuff from him here.
00:27:44 Let me share screen here, and we'll go to the email.
00:27:47 What's poppin'? Play up.
00:27:49 This was two days ago.
00:27:51 Evening, gents. Watching the Memphis-San Antonio game tonight,
00:27:53 and I think that as long as Celtics take them seriously as an opponent,
00:27:56 we might see a 50-point margin of victory.
00:27:58 Oh, no. This was before the Grizzlies game,
00:28:00 which the Celtics won by two.
00:28:02 Grizz lack both talents and connectedness of Coach Mazzullo
00:28:05 points out to the refs their tendency to use two hands on check screens.
00:28:09 Celtics may be able to Geno time midway through the third,
00:28:11 even without Jalen. Stupid tournament courts.
00:28:13 Be well. Age like milk. Sorry, RJ.
00:28:16 We don't read these before we go on the show,
00:28:18 but it's nice to see the reflection.
00:28:20 So you'll get 'em next time.
00:28:22 That's a tough one.
00:28:24 Next email from Jesse Kennedy.
00:28:28 New emailer. Hello. How we doin'?
00:28:31 What's up, Jack and Sam? Been listening to you guys for a while now,
00:28:33 and I tuned into the Garden Report.
00:28:35 A-list locked on. Celtics Lab, et cetera.
00:28:37 You guys put together some good and fresh content.
00:28:39 I drive around for work, and it's something to look forward to.
00:28:42 I've been bleeding green since 2002. I almost never miss games.
00:28:44 I stream them and not paying league pass respect.
00:28:47 I'm 37, grew up in West Roxbury/Roslindale,
00:28:50 and I'm in San Diego now for the past four years.
00:28:53 Fuck the cold. Fuck Julius Randall. Sam, keep talking shit.
00:28:56 Jack, fuck them sniffle haters. Jesse, thanks, Jesse.
00:28:59 We appreciate you for the email.
00:29:03 Next one, I believe, is going right back to RJ.
00:29:06 Shocker.
00:29:08 I just gotta mark something down real quick, and then I'll read it.
00:29:11 Okay, RJ, never again, I swear.
00:29:14 I'm leaving the halftime hot takes to Sam.
00:29:16 That's all there is to it. Props to Memphis for coming back.
00:29:19 This was a reply to his [laughs]
00:29:22 viscous sleeves prediction.
00:29:25 Yeah, sorry, RJ. Sorry about that one, buddy.
00:29:28 Knuckleheads, email from Philip Hart.
00:29:31 Hi, guys. There may be no duo who can collectively clown on opposing players
00:29:34 better than you two. Shout out to Nick Wright, too.
00:29:36 So why not encourage you guys to do it more?
00:29:39 Let's rank the dumbest players in the NBA.
00:29:41 For clarity, I do not mean insane people, Kyrie,
00:29:43 or emotionally ignorant people, Draymond,
00:29:45 but the most classical type of dumb, like Mark Jackson,
00:29:48 Mama, There Goes That Man type stupidity.
00:29:51 I like that.
00:29:53 I base this both on on-court decisions and interviews mostly.
00:29:56 Here are the candidates that I propose.
00:29:59 Please feel free to add or exclude anybody.
00:30:01 Then please, please debate who is the dumbest.
00:30:04 Here are the candidates.
00:30:06 Julius Randle, Jordan Poole, Rudy Gobert, Jordan Clarkson,
00:30:09 Dylan Brooks, Andre Drummond, and low-key Klay Thompson.
00:30:12 Let the rankings begin. Thanks and all the best, Phil.
00:30:14 Now, before we do this, anybody you would like to add or exclude?
00:30:17 J.R. Smith.
00:30:19 [laughs]
00:30:20 Javale McGee.
00:30:22 Good. Okay.
00:30:24 Um, I'm trying to think.
00:30:27 I don't know if there's anybody else I would want to include.
00:30:30 Um, James Harden, maybe.
00:30:33 I'll throw James Harden on there.
00:30:36 I want to exclude Rudy Gobert
00:30:39 because he's actually playing really well this season for the Timberwolves.
00:30:42 Like, he's found a niche there.
00:30:44 I understand the inclusion, but I don't think I'll pick him to win.
00:30:47 Same with Jordan Clarkson.
00:30:48 Like, I understand it, but I don't think I'd go with him anyways.
00:30:51 I really just think it's Julius Randle.
00:30:54 I truly just think he takes the cake.
00:30:56 I think the number one--
00:30:57 Although, Jordan Poole is giving him a serious run for his money this season.
00:31:00 Have you seen the report from Mark Stein that they might just want to move on from him?
00:31:04 [laughs]
00:31:05 Ooh, I did not see that, but I like that.
00:31:07 I am pro that.
00:31:09 I think those guys top too.
00:31:11 Yeah, I think those guys are top too.
00:31:13 Please trade him for Zach LaVine.
00:31:17 [laughs]
00:31:18 Who says no?
00:31:20 Both teams.
00:31:21 Yeah.
00:31:22 [laughs]
00:31:23 I think those two are up there.
00:31:25 I think I'm going to make both, put Grant in the running,
00:31:28 but he's having a good season.
00:31:30 But, yeah, I think Randle and Poole are a very close one too,
00:31:35 and they kind of slapbox each other for the number one spot
00:31:38 based on a night-to-night basis.
00:31:39 What do you think?
00:31:40 I think that's fair.
00:31:42 I do like the Drummond pick, though.
00:31:44 Best room ever, all-time.
00:31:46 Cat.
00:31:47 Cat?
00:31:48 Greatest three-point shooter ever.
00:31:50 I don't know if he's a chump.
00:31:51 He's changed the game.
00:31:52 Yeah, he changed the game.
00:31:54 That Pat Pebb interview was all-time.
00:31:58 Or is it Paul George?
00:32:00 Maybe he was in the Paul George thing.
00:32:01 I don't know.
00:32:02 That interview, whatever it was.
00:32:03 It was Paul George.
00:32:04 That was next level.
00:32:05 That was big time.
00:32:08 LeBron, for reading the same books over and over again.
00:32:11 Yeah, LeBron can't read.
00:32:12 [Laughter]
00:32:15 Tim Hanks, he read the clips of Moore that were going over the wall.
00:32:19 I'm going Julius Randle and Jordan Poole, though, one-two.
00:32:23 Randle one, Poole two.
00:32:24 That's my final choice.
00:32:26 I think that's very fair.
00:32:27 We'll rock with that.
00:32:29 All right, two more emails.
00:32:30 What's popping from RJ?
00:32:31 First rule of greatness.
00:32:32 This was a day ago, so this was before the loss of the Hornets.
00:32:37 Hey, guys, looking forward to the Memphis game this afternoon,
00:32:39 but I'm still thinking about the Omo stinker in Toronto.
00:32:42 Well, we got news for you, RJ.
00:32:43 Everyone wants to be great, and while there are lots of positive steps to take
00:32:46 to get to the level, the first thing to do seems obvious,
00:32:48 the point of being almost counterintuitive.
00:32:50 Don't do things that suck.
00:32:51 This isn't don't be bad.
00:32:53 Everyone can have a night where your shooting is off or you're a half step
00:32:56 behind the defense.
00:32:58 No, not sucking means looking at your own bad habits and reducing
00:33:01 and eliminating them.
00:33:02 One of the reasons this year's Celtics look and feel better than last year's
00:33:05 squad is that they've cut back things that suck, like not rebounding as a team.
00:33:09 Yikes.
00:33:10 Throwing the ball away.
00:33:12 Yikes.
00:33:13 Dribble, dribble, three possessions.
00:33:15 Perfect.
00:33:16 RJ had the crystal ball out.
00:33:18 Perimeter only passing, no penetration or post-ups.
00:33:21 Yikes.
00:33:22 And slow to initiate the offense.
00:33:24 They've been better at this because they chuck a lot of threes.
00:33:26 Watching the Cs this year, they've improved on all of these.
00:33:29 Sucking less means it's easier for you to be great more often,
00:33:32 which is why in the third quarter against Toronto was the b-ball equivalent
00:33:35 of fingernails on chalkboard.
00:33:37 A stroll into the front court, early threes,
00:33:39 getting outnumbered on the glass, early threes.
00:33:41 It was all there.
00:33:42 After the second quarter's demonstration of beautiful basketball,
00:33:44 I was expecting more of the same.
00:33:46 I hope the flight to Memphis afforded the coaching staff some time to hit on
00:33:49 all of these teachable moments.
00:33:51 This year's team has it in them to be the best Celtics squad since '86.
00:33:54 The only thing standing in their way is themselves.
00:33:56 Be well.
00:33:57 This aged so beautifully, and I'm so glad I read it.
00:34:00 This is like when Adam Silver,
00:34:03 that time he told John not to show a gun on Instagram,
00:34:06 and then he went and did it again.
00:34:08 So RJ told the Celtics not to do all these things,
00:34:10 and then they said, "Hey, look.
00:34:12 We're going to give up offensive rebounds.
00:34:14 We'll turn the ball over a couple dumb times down the stretch."
00:34:18 Jalen Porzingis waving his arms wide open, dribble.
00:34:22 Actually, I don't even know if it was dribble, dribble, three,
00:34:24 but it was a perimeter-only pass early chuck three.
00:34:28 Two for one.
00:34:30 Yep, have to do two for one, and slowly initiate the offense
00:34:33 on that final regulation possession with Tatum dribbling with his back
00:34:36 to Hayward for a little bit too long before moving.
00:34:39 Yeah, I agree.
00:34:41 You ever seen "That's So Raven"?
00:34:43 Yeah.
00:34:44 Whoa.
00:34:46 Oh, heavy.
00:34:47 Last one, and I'm going to give you a nice little insight into what's next.
00:34:51 RJ sent us an email after the game,
00:34:53 so let's see what he had to say about the Hornets game.
00:34:56 "What's poppin'? Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
00:34:59 Evening, guys. Multiple-choice quiz.
00:35:02 Why did the Celtics lose in Charlotte?
00:35:04 Losing on the offensive glass, 11-17, missing 10 free throws,
00:35:08 not passing the ball enough, only 19 assists, or D all of the above."
00:35:12 I'm going with D.
00:35:13 "Coach Mazzullo gives extra credit for the 5-for-8 Pritchard on the bench,
00:35:17 leaving the 1-for-9 Santander Mouser in the game to take the final three."
00:35:20 You and me both. Handshake, RJ.
00:35:22 "Actually, double extra credit for the coach because when Holiday came in
00:35:24 for Pritchard with 5-26 left, the Celtics were up 191.
00:35:27 How often do you see the second-leading score set out in the last five minutes of game
00:35:30 only to sub back in to start OT?"
00:35:32 I would still play Holiday over Pritchard.
00:35:34 It's the Hauser for Pritchard that was the problem for me.
00:35:36 Holiday's too good. I don't care if he's having a rough night.
00:35:38 He's an all-star, but that's just my opinion.
00:35:41 "But as much as all of that contributed, the Celtics were still up by 9 with 120 remaining.
00:35:44 In the final 140 seconds, they did not score,
00:35:47 including Drew Holiday's unfortunate Grant Williams impersonation at the line.
00:35:51 While the Hornets out-rebounded, the Celtics 4-0.
00:35:54 It was the return of late season 2023, ugly as ever.
00:35:57 Be well. Sam, would you consider living in Ireland until the Celtics win the championship?"
00:36:01 This is sad because I came back and they lost.
00:36:04 This is true. I forgot about that.
00:36:06 I told you it was good. That was my fault. I'll hand it up.
00:36:09 I was really concerned about this. Not a good start.
00:36:14 I've actually been miserable since I got back. I'm not going to lie to you.
00:36:18 Let's move on.
00:36:21 It's not for this part of the show.
00:36:24 Let's go to the NBA portion of the show.
00:36:27 Instead of an NBA around the league check-in, let's do an NBA standings check-in.
00:36:31 That way it will go by a little quicker and we can see where our predictions are going for the season.
00:36:36 Let me pull up the spreadsheet RJ has so kindly made for us.
00:36:40 Shout out RJ, legend of the program.
00:36:43 I just pulled up the spreadsheet for my family's Thanksgiving potluck.
00:36:49 That's not what I wanted. Where is the thing RJ made? Here it is!
00:36:53 Here is the spreadsheet with NBA current standings.
00:36:56 I don't know if this is currently updated to the actual standings.
00:37:01 The last time this was updated was 11/17, but it's close enough for us to take a look.
00:37:07 So, start of the season, I said top 3, or we'll go top 4 to start.
00:37:11 I had Boston, Milwaukee, Cleveland, New York.
00:37:14 Sam had Boston, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Miami.
00:37:17 Right now, it is roughly Boston, Philly, Milwaukee, Miami.
00:37:21 So, close. Philly a little bit better than consensus for us two.
00:37:25 I think the rest of our Eastern Conference predictions were pretty safe though.
00:37:29 5-8 for both of us was Philly, Miami, Atlanta, Indiana.
00:37:32 You had Philly, New York, Orlando, Indiana. So pretty close.
00:37:37 We both hit on the Indiana, Orlando jumps because right now it is Indiana, Orlando, New York, Cleveland.
00:37:43 Brooklyn is a tiny bit worse than we both thought they would be.
00:37:46 I had them at 9, you had them at 10, and then the rest of it, you had Detroit at 11, I had them at 13.
00:37:51 But the bottom of the East is the bottom of the East for us.
00:37:54 They are at 15.
00:37:56 They are at 15.
00:37:59 We both got the tiers, we'll call it the tiers of the East, correct? We were on par.
00:38:05 Out West, I had Denver, Phoenix, Lakers, Warriors.
00:38:09 Sam had Denver, Phoenix, Clippers, Warriors.
00:38:12 Right now, or roughly right now, I should say, it is Denver, Dallas, Minnesota, Oklahoma City.
00:38:18 So a lot of weird stuff happening out West.
00:38:21 A lot of weird stuff. Warriors struggling mightily. They are 6-8 right now, which is brutal.
00:38:25 Next here, in the 6-8, or excuse me, 5-8, I had...
00:38:32 Sorry, getting confused here. Memphis, OKC, Sacramento, Clippers.
00:38:36 Sam had Lakers, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, Memphis.
00:38:41 Obviously Memphis has been struggling.
00:38:43 Right now, it is Sacramento, Houston, Lakers, New Orleans.
00:38:47 Shout out to you for getting the Pelicans higher up there.
00:38:50 At least for now. I was more down on them.
00:38:52 And then, again, bottom of the West.
00:38:54 They beat Denver.
00:38:56 They did. Bottom of the West, however, is an absolute shitshow.
00:39:00 Houston is much better than everyone thought.
00:39:02 But Portland, Memphis, San Antonio, bad.
00:39:04 Clippers, Utah, Phoenix, Golden State, all bad as well.
00:39:08 Standings are weird right now.
00:39:10 East is... It feels like the East is shaping out into what a lot of people expected it to be.
00:39:14 But the West is a complete shitshow.
00:39:16 Also, just quickly, just because he made the sheet, so respect.
00:39:19 RJ is on par with the East, just like we were.
00:39:23 He had Orlando, Indiana, 8-9 roughly, and he had the bottom 5.
00:39:27 He was way down on Houston, but they are back up.
00:39:30 He was very high in Minnesota, so respect to RJ.
00:39:32 He had him at 3, and they're popping.
00:39:34 He had an OKC way up here.
00:39:36 Not as high on Dallas. They've outperformed a bit.
00:39:38 And then the Lakers in 12.
00:39:40 RJ is, I guess, right now, pretty good.
00:39:42 I don't know where they're at. They are in 9, so you're closer than we are.
00:39:45 But RJ hitting and missing on similar stuff to Sam and I.
00:39:48 But let's move on to our next piece of NBA news here,
00:39:52 which I believe is the Bulls, the first thing we have on here.
00:39:55 No, it is the— Yes, it is.
00:39:57 So, do you want to do this? You put it on the sheet, or do you want me to read it?
00:40:00 Sure.
00:40:01 Yeah, so, a little update from the Bulls.
00:40:04 Now, if you ask me, this is not a very surprising report,
00:40:08 but it is news because we learned it.
00:40:11 According to NBA insider Mark Stein, Alex Caruso and Pat Williams are,
00:40:17 quote-unquote, "generating the most November trade curiosity from rival teams."
00:40:22 Among all of the Bulls, they are.
00:40:26 In fact, Stein noted, Caruso, quote-unquote,
00:40:29 "would have a double-digit list of trade suitors if the Bulls decided to make him available,"
00:40:34 which they haven't, not to mention Zach Levine. Shocker.
00:40:39 Bad contract, losing player, nobody wants him.
00:40:44 Meanwhile, Caruso, good contract, hard-nosed, defensive winning player,
00:40:49 and people want him.
00:40:51 Yeah. I agree.
00:40:54 I agree, and also, Zach Levine, for what it's worth,
00:40:58 this was from Casey Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago.
00:41:00 After the Bulls' recent big comeback win over the Heat,
00:41:03 didn't do post-game stuff, he just walked off the court,
00:41:07 and apparently Billy Donovan and everyone were mad at him.
00:41:09 They were really pissed with the way he acted and buried himself.
00:41:12 He is one of the greats.
00:41:13 He said it was a miscommunication with the Bulls' PR staff,
00:41:16 but the video showed him literally shaking off his PR person,
00:41:19 like, ignoring them.
00:41:21 Yeah, miscommunication. He didn't want to do it,
00:41:23 and they thought he might do it, and then he had to tell them no.
00:41:26 No, but I think Caruso, if the Bulls don't trade Caruso,
00:41:30 the Bulls are fucking stupid, man.
00:41:33 I'm so done with the Bulls. They're so ass.
00:41:35 I have to write about them, and I'm very happy that I get to write about basketball for a living,
00:41:39 but holy shit, they're bad.
00:41:40 They're losing by 22 to the Heat right now, and you know what? Good.
00:41:43 I want them to lose every game, so they're forced to blow up this dogshit team.
00:41:47 It's so bad. Levine took nine shots tonight because he's ass.
00:41:51 He's a minus 24. Kobe White led them in scoring with 20, right?
00:41:55 Alex Caruso has 13 in the starting lineup.
00:41:57 DeMar DeRozan's a minus 15. They're useless, man.
00:42:00 This team's so stupid.
00:42:02 I hate the Bulls, man. I fucking hate them.
00:42:05 I think their fans hate them, too.
00:42:06 People in the pregame wanted us to talk about Caruso.
00:42:08 I'd love Caruso if I was him.
00:42:10 Caruso's awesome.
00:42:12 Free Levine, my ass. Free Caruso. Get that man out of there.
00:42:16 Poor guy.
00:42:17 Levine doesn't deserve to be freed.
00:42:19 Agree. Stay in Chicago. Have some fun there, buddy.
00:42:23 Next thing we have is the Sacramento Kings, who I've been enjoying this season,
00:42:26 but they just got absolutely fucking shit on by whoever they were playing.
00:42:29 I just saw it.
00:42:30 Yeah, they lost by 40 to the Pelicans right now.
00:42:33 However, update about the Kings.
00:42:36 They might want Levine.
00:42:39 Good luck, sir.
00:42:40 The Kings are going star hunting at the NBA trade deadline.
00:42:44 According to Shams Tarhani of The Athletic,
00:42:47 he said they're going to be involved in every star player.
00:42:50 Pascal Siakamuji, Anonomi, maybe Zach Levine.
00:42:52 They've done a good job at keeping their assets.
00:42:54 They have tradable contracts.
00:42:55 They're going to be a star.
00:42:56 A player for stars is coming up for sure.
00:42:58 I think eventually they could add a third piece.
00:42:59 The Kings were in on Levine when he re-signed with the Bulls.
00:43:02 They made an offer that the Bulls matched in a restricted free agency a bunch of years ago.
00:43:05 And I will also say, they do make some sort of sense for Levine
00:43:09 because he could be sort of a secondary option to Fox on the perimeter.
00:43:13 You could pretty easily replace Kevin Herter in that starting lineup
00:43:18 with Zach Levine, who is a better shot creator
00:43:20 and has been an efficient scorer in the past when put in the right positions to do so.
00:43:24 I would like Siakamuji or OG Anonomi a bit more for them.
00:43:27 I think OG Anonomi would be perfect.
00:43:28 Him and Keegan Murray on the perimeter would be fucking disgusting.
00:43:31 But I don't hate any of those guys for the Kings.
00:43:34 Although I do, admittedly, I like Zach Levine the least for them.
00:43:38 See, I don't know if I understand the Siakamuji fit as much.
00:43:42 I know they do play Sabonis at center, so it could very well work.
00:43:45 But I don't really see Siakamuji as a perimeter player.
00:43:49 He does his best work closer to the basket in the paint, you know, hitting spin moves.
00:43:54 I think that puts Sabonis in an awkward predicament.
00:43:57 He's got a little bit less space to work down there.
00:43:59 I think Sacramento probably works best with one guy manning the paint instead of two.
00:44:04 But I'll say this, I like OG a lot for them.
00:44:08 They could probably slide either him or Murray to that two-guard spot if they were to make a deal.
00:44:14 You'd imagine that Herter would probably go—I don't really know who else they would have to throw in for salary.
00:44:20 They would have to do way more than Herter to intrigue—yeah, Paris and Barnes—
00:44:25 to intrigue the Raptors, who have been a hardball team in terms of fielding offers for OG Anonomi.
00:44:34 But with all that being said, if I had to pick any team to make a deal this year,
00:44:40 I would love to see it be the Kings, because I think the Kings have proven to everybody that they are a good team.
00:44:46 We saw a crazy showing from Fox earlier this week, and they need a legitimate second punch.
00:44:56 They can get away with not adding that second punch, especially if it is Zach Levine that is the rumored guy,
00:45:02 by just continuing to solidify the supporting cast with somebody like OG,
00:45:09 who in his own right could be a nice secondary punch, or at least tertiary, if he wants a bonus to remain that.
00:45:16 Yeah, I agree with you also. Sorry to distract you. Celtics just tweeted,
00:45:21 "This was an atypical loss for us in Charlotte," and I just want to scream,
00:45:24 "No it fucking wasn't, buddy. It's what you did all of last year."
00:45:26 What do you mean atypical? Maybe atypical for this group, but oh boy.
00:45:31 What a disaster. Did you hear what I said about the Celtics tweet?
00:45:34 I don't know if you cut out at that exact moment.
00:45:36 I sure did.
00:45:38 Yeah, the Celtics tweeted out, "This was an atypical loss for us in Charlotte,"
00:45:42 and I'm like, "Was it though? Was it atypical? Was this different?"
00:45:46 So I can imagine they're getting cooked. Sorry, I just had to bring that back up, because I saw that you paused.
00:45:52 Anyways, next thing we have, Patrick Williams spoke about the Wizards.
00:45:58 Patrick Williams. Patrick Beverly spoke about the Wizards. Sorry.
00:46:03 He said, "Shit show. I mean, they lose a ton of games.
00:46:09 Shit shouldn't happen. I don't give a fuck who you are.
00:46:12 The greats, that wouldn't happen. It's not happening. You need good vets."
00:46:16 And you know what, Patrick Beverly? I think we all knew this.
00:46:19 I thought the Wizards were good though, but now that he mentioned it, they do lose a lot of games.
00:46:26 They do.
00:46:27 They did just, I believe, get eliminated from the in-season tournament, which kind of sucks.
00:46:32 Because with fun young players like Jordan Poole and also Kyle Kuzma, who's almost 30,
00:46:38 you really could have got your fan base excited about something with this new competition.
00:46:45 But they also could use some good vets. Maybe somebody like…
00:46:52 You know what I'd ask him? You know what I'd ask Patrick Beverly?
00:46:55 Are you volunteering? Are you putting your hand up to go there and be their vet?
00:46:59 You know you're doing hell no.
00:47:01 You'd be like, "Fuck, no, I don't want to go."
00:47:04 Absolutely not.
00:47:05 What vets want to go? Didn't they wave Taj Gibson at the start of the season?
00:47:08 I wonder if Taj Gibson was like, "You motherfuckers better not fucking bring me on this team."
00:47:13 Probably. He probably didn't want to spend time there.
00:47:16 Man. Yeah, the Wizards suck.
00:47:19 I mean, this is Patrick Beverly letting everybody know the sky is blue.
00:47:23 Let's be honest with ourselves.
00:47:26 It would be sick if the Wizards ripped off like 10 straight wins.
00:47:31 Yeah. Also, we didn't talk about this in the Celtics thing. Very brief.
00:47:37 The clock got messed up. You know how everyone was mad?
00:47:41 Like the clock in the last play? Who fucking cares?
00:47:43 Yes, it was wrong. Yes, they should have had more time.
00:47:47 Don't blow a nine-point lead with a minute left.
00:47:49 Yeah, don't blow a lead.
00:47:51 Thoughts on not being bad. Also, again, more Celtics stuff briefly.
00:47:54 The pressers haven't started yet.
00:47:56 Like no one started talking to the media yet.
00:47:58 Joe hasn't talked yet. Nobody's talked yet, which is very weird.
00:48:02 The coach is usually supposed to talk 15 minutes after the game, like go.
00:48:06 So speculation, are they having a meeting? Don't know.
00:48:09 But we're about to go into the Rat List, so you'll have to hear about that on the next episode of the Celtics.
00:48:16 Let's jump into the Rat List here.
00:48:18 You just got back from Ireland, and I know you're very tired, so I'm going to let you kick it off to get any steam off your chest.
00:48:24 The internet still fucking sucks here. I forgot.
00:48:28 You miss hotel Wi-Fi? You miss it?
00:48:31 Do I miss hotel Wi-Fi? I do. I really do.
00:48:34 I know what was great about hotel Wi-Fi is I could talk to Jack forever, and I wouldn't lag.
00:48:39 But I came home, and we did the show today, and it took me four minutes to lag.
00:48:44 I'm half tempted to edit in your outbursts, just take out the silence, but just have you go, "Uh," and then go, "Fuck!"
00:48:53 Just fucking jump right back into the pod.
00:48:56 [laughter]
00:48:58 Well, it didn't even start with us recording. I was trying to watch the game downstairs, and you get the little buffering circle on the TV.
00:49:06 It needs to come to an end.
00:49:08 That's a disaster. That's a rough one.
00:49:11 What am I going to rat list?
00:49:14 Oh, I'm going to rat list not Danny, but the situation he unintentionally put me in.
00:49:20 So I went out for drinks. I went out in Boston on Saturday.
00:49:24 It was great. I got the perfect level of drunk. I was happy.
00:49:28 And I'm not a big drinker. I know Samuel's not a drinker at all.
00:49:30 I don't drink a lot. I'll drink on the weekends every once in a while, like every two weeks, every week, whatever.
00:49:37 Yeah, not very often.
00:49:39 No. I went out to a bar with Danny and his buddies. It was good.
00:49:45 Got some food, made some bets, had a good time. Whatever.
00:49:49 We go to the next bar, and on the way to the next bar, or before we left, Danny goes, "Yeah, so these guys, my friends, girlfriends, roommate, his friends, somebody he went to high school with, we're going out with her."
00:49:59 It was one of those friend of a friend, whatever.
00:50:01 So he goes, "Yeah, this girl that we graduated with in high school is going to be at the bar we're going at. We're going out. She's part of the group or whatever. We're going to see them there."
00:50:11 And I'm like, "Okay, that's weird."
00:50:13 And keep in mind, I wasn't very social in high school, so I'd never spoken to this girl.
00:50:18 We get there, and I find out that we weren't going to see this girl at the bar.
00:50:24 It was this girl's birthday.
00:50:26 Oh no.
00:50:27 She was having a lot of friends come to the bar for her birthday.
00:50:32 So there were at least 20 people I went to high school with at the bar.
00:50:38 Happy, happy birthday from HBTC to you. We wish it was our birthday so we could party too.
00:50:43 Put the hats on.
00:50:45 I end up standing in the corner with Danny's friends.
00:50:52 Love the corner.
00:50:54 I still had fun.
00:50:56 I'm a corner guy myself.
00:50:58 Exactly. Still had a great night. It was good.
00:51:00 We didn't interact with him much throughout the night regardless.
00:51:02 But Danny is very social, so he went out to talk to them for a little while.
00:51:07 And I stood with Danny's friends who I become friends with.
00:51:10 I'm good enough friends with them where I can have a conversation with them.
00:51:12 I turn to them and I go, "Guys, this is my second time meeting you.
00:51:16 I think I've spoken more to you than anybody that is at this bar tonight that I went to high school with."
00:51:21 And they laugh.
00:51:22 And then we played a drinking game.
00:51:24 Anybody who listens to the show knows I was not a sports guy in high school.
00:51:28 I wasn't built for it. I did glee club. I did show choir.
00:51:31 And so while me talking basketball is very normal to anybody who listens to the show,
00:51:36 normal for Sam, normal to anybody,
00:51:38 anybody I went to high school with, me covering the Celtics is like the biggest fucking pivot they could possibly think.
00:51:45 It is the most... they're like, "What the fuck?"
00:51:47 And being successful at it.
00:51:49 Yeah. Well, relative. We'll get there.
00:51:51 Well, you had the guy say that he hated your bars, but he still rocked with you.
00:51:55 Exactly. That's the same for me.
00:51:57 Which I love that comment.
00:51:59 We played a drinking game where anytime anybody from my high school asked me about the Celtics,
00:52:05 we took a drink.
00:52:06 And it was very helpful.
00:52:08 Isn't that the worst?
00:52:10 [Laughter]
00:52:12 Like, listen. Finish, finish, finish.
00:52:15 I don't know if anybody from my high school listened to this because I've had people from my high school say,
00:52:19 "Oh, we like the podcast," whatever.
00:52:21 I don't mind talking about the Celtics.
00:52:23 It is whatever. I'm fine to have small talk.
00:52:25 I like the Celtics, right? Obviously, I like the Celtics because I cover them.
00:52:28 So I'm fine to talk shop about the Celtics for five minutes.
00:52:32 But it was just... that was always like, "Oh, yeah. I see your tweets. Oh, yeah, dude. Celtics."
00:52:37 I'm like, "Yeah, that's me, man. I'm the Celtics guy now," which is just funny.
00:52:41 That's just fine.
00:52:43 I love when somebody wants to talk to you about the Celtics and they're just like, "What do you think?"
00:52:48 What do I think about what?
00:52:51 I mean they're good, man.
00:52:53 Well, because the issue is I talk about the Celtics so often and in such niche, minute details that it is almost hard for me to generalize my thoughts.
00:53:03 Me too, and I'm the dumb one.
00:53:05 Like people will ask me stuff and I'm like, "I really don't know what to say to you because I really don't know how in-depth I should go before I start to sound like a loser
00:53:16 or make you feel bad about how much you care about this or whatever."
00:53:20 And because I hate when people do that to me when I like something and then somebody else will be like, "Well, this, this, this, and this,"
00:53:27 and inform you way more than you knew about it.
00:53:30 And you're like, "I just kind of like this band. I was just trying to hang out."
00:53:35 It's like you have to find a balance between...
00:53:38 Because they all know that I cover the Celtics, so they obviously want to hear actually what I think.
00:53:42 But I don't want to like... I'm not going to sit there and be like, "Well, I mean, Jalen Brown shoots too many shots.
00:53:48 The two-man game between KP and JB has been great this season. Jason Tamm is going to the post more."
00:53:53 And they're just going to be like, "Dude, they're 11-2 though."
00:53:56 Yeah, they are.
00:53:57 I joke about ball-going hoop is like every day what I'm thinking about.
00:54:02 But it's tough when people are thinking that.
00:54:05 But with that being said, everybody that listens to us, even if you may be a ball-going hoop person, you're still interested enough to listen and learn.
00:54:15 Not everybody is like that.
00:54:17 I didn't have any of those conversations that night.
00:54:19 Most of the conversations I had about it, I only really had one.
00:54:22 And the other interactions I had with people from high school was just like, "Hey, how are you doing?" Blah, blah, blah.
00:54:26 The only real conversation I had about it was, "It's super cool. You get to go to games. What's that been like? Where are you living?"
00:54:31 It was a pretty general conversation about the job rather than the team.
00:54:34 And again, I don't even mind talking about it in general.
00:54:37 It's just very funny because any time I see anybody from high school, particularly the athletes.
00:54:45 A lot of these people were like, "They played basketball. They played football. They were some of the popular kids or whatever."
00:54:50 They were very into sports always.
00:54:53 And me, who did the fucking musical in St. Glee Club, is now the one who covers basketball.
00:54:59 They're like, "What the hell? You know ball?"
00:55:03 I'm like, "Yeah, man. Something smooth."
00:55:07 Everyone there was nice.
00:55:10 I have nothing against anybody from high school. They're all very nice people.
00:55:14 I can get along. I can have a conversation with them.
00:55:16 I'm just not a fucking social person, so I've never talked to them.
00:55:20 And Danny, who was extremely social, was just going up, doing the rounds.
00:55:25 "Yeah, how you been? How you been?" And I'm sitting there like, "Hey, man. This ain't what I signed up for."
00:55:31 Shout out to everybody I talked to, I guess, if you're listening.
00:55:35 My favorite thing about our show is that the people that show up in the comments will have good conversation with each other or they'll ask good questions.
00:55:42 Always participate. There's nothing wrong with participating.
00:55:46 It's just for us to be approached on certain things, it's difficult at times because we don't really know what to say.
00:55:52 And again, I don't mind doing it. I just feel like it's hard for me to generalize stuff.
00:55:57 What do you got? You got anything else?
00:56:01 So Ratliff's this guy on my flight today. This guy on my flight – so we're at the airport before we board.
00:56:07 And before they board the plane, they separate everyone into classes, as you do.
00:56:12 Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:56:13 Yeah.
00:56:14 [Laughter]
00:56:16 But they do Delta One, Premium Select, all the other – you get to board first because you're a special thing, like whatever, Diamond, Platinum, all that stuff.
00:56:26 Then they have Main Cabin 1, 2, 3, and then Basic.
00:56:29 So anyways, I'm in Main Cabin 3.
00:56:32 We've been all lined up for a while. My foot hurts.
00:56:35 And then this fucking dickhead guy comes with his wife.
00:56:39 And I don't know. You look at this guy and he's just one of those people.
00:56:44 You look at him and you're like, "I know that guy is going to be a problem for somebody today."
00:56:48 Yeah.
00:56:49 And he's talking to me at the gate.
00:56:51 And I think he was like Main Cabin 2 and I'm lagging.
00:56:55 Hmm.
00:56:56 Oh, Sam is lagging.
00:56:58 I'm just going to talk here for a second while Sam –
00:56:59 What was the last thing you heard?
00:57:01 Main Cabin 2. You lagged for two seconds. You're good.
00:57:03 Main Cabin 2.
00:57:05 And so he starts talking to the agent and she explains where he has to line up.
00:57:12 And he gets all bent out of shape because he went to the wrong side.
00:57:15 And what did it for me is they have the sign that tells you where to board.
00:57:23 On the left side it says Sky Priority.
00:57:26 On the right side it says like General Boarding.
00:57:32 The man turns the sign out of spite to let them know that he was misled,
00:57:37 took five steps to the wrong side.
00:57:41 And then what do I see mid-flight?
00:57:43 I see one of the flight crew consistently trapped over by where this man is seated
00:57:51 because he's complaining about something.
00:57:54 Yeah. Yeah.
00:57:57 Rat.
00:57:58 Yeah.
00:57:59 Like the very definition of rat.
00:58:01 I don't get –
00:58:02 The rat list is kind of deviated from just like bitching about like terrible people.
00:58:07 But this is a good old classic like this guy, dictionary, photograph, rat.
00:58:14 Yeah. What's crazy to me like how do you have enough energy to be that much of an asshole?
00:58:21 Like don't you just want to like be happy?
00:58:24 Like don't you just want to have like a good life and like have a fine day?
00:58:27 Like you're making your own day worse.
00:58:29 No, no, no.
00:58:30 But like to actively be an asshole and make your own day worse takes a special type of like rat.
00:58:37 You know what I'm saying?
00:58:38 Like you can be having a bad day.
00:58:39 You can be upset at stuff.
00:58:40 But to actively find things to be annoyed at and like overreact to small things,
00:58:46 you are making your own day worse and then by proxy making the days of the people around you worse.
00:58:51 Like that goes beyond like a rat moment.
00:58:54 Like you are just like a rat.
00:58:56 You're just a bad person.
00:58:58 Like what is –
00:58:59 This comes after –
00:59:00 It doesn't make sense to me.
00:59:01 Jack and I did a half hour on a November loss to Charlotte.
00:59:04 It's true.
00:59:05 Good for us, man.
00:59:06 Hey.
00:59:07 Shout out to all you.
00:59:09 I was not –
00:59:10 I was literally like I did a couple of these like in the show.
00:59:14 I'm labeling.
00:59:17 So rat story.
00:59:20 Do you have anything else you want me to close with this?
00:59:22 You can close if you want to close.
00:59:24 It doesn't matter.
00:59:26 I'm just saying if you want something else.
00:59:27 No.
00:59:28 Come to me later in the week.
00:59:30 We have more rat lists to do.
00:59:31 That's fine.
00:59:32 So on this night that I was out, we left the bar/club, whatever.
00:59:39 It was a bar.
00:59:40 There was a club downstairs.
00:59:41 We were dancing.
00:59:42 It was a good time.
00:59:43 Throughout the night, I'm talking to my friend Danny, old friend of the program.
00:59:49 I turned to him and said, "Danny, I'm not drunk enough yet."
00:59:54 I made the joke and this is only a joke.
00:59:56 I go, "Danny, I could still drive home right now."
00:59:58 I couldn't obviously because I was drunk.
00:59:59 My point being I don't feel it enough to have a good time yet.
01:00:03 He goes, "All right, bet.
01:00:05 Walk over.
01:00:06 Get me another rum."
01:00:07 I was having a rum and coke.
01:00:08 He gets me a green tea shot.
01:00:09 I do a shot.
01:00:10 I go back to the dance floor.
01:00:12 I go back to the bar.
01:00:13 I turn to Danny's friend, Ryan.
01:00:15 I go, "Ryan, you want to do a shot with me?"
01:00:16 He goes, "Fuck it."
01:00:18 I go, "Do a shot."
01:00:20 Apparently, this is unrelated.
01:00:21 Now I'm going on a tangent, but it relates because it's a basketball pod.
01:00:24 Apparently, the guy at the bar won $1,300 on a Chet Holmgren parlay the night we were at the club.
01:00:31 It was the night he hit the game winner against the Warriors.
01:00:33 Nice.
01:00:34 He was hyped.
01:00:35 He gave us a fist bump and I just wrote on the receipt.
01:00:37 I go, "Shout out fucking Chet Holmgren, baby.
01:00:40 It was a good time.
01:00:41 I gave him a nice tip.
01:00:42 It was fun."
01:00:43 There's that, but we leave the bar.
01:00:45 I turn to Danny and our other friend, Zach.
01:00:48 I go, "Danny, it's only 1.30 or it's only 1 whatever."
01:00:53 I go, "Why are we leaving?"
01:00:55 He goes, "We just have to go home."
01:00:56 I'm like, "I want to go out again."
01:00:58 I'm like, "I'm not done, Danny.
01:00:59 I want to go."
01:01:00 I'm doing that the whole time.
01:01:01 We go down to wait for the train.
01:01:02 Maybe this is going to be a time here.
01:01:04 Oh, it's going to be great.
01:01:05 That's going to be great.
01:01:06 Train doesn't show up.
01:01:07 Train just like, it stops three stops later.
01:01:09 We have to walk, right?
01:01:10 Which, we're drunk.
01:01:11 It's a nice breeze.
01:01:12 Whatever.
01:01:13 Walking, walking, walking.
01:01:14 We get to this place called College Pizza.
01:01:17 I'm going to say it because College Pizza is fucking awesome.
01:01:20 If you live by Fenway, go to College Pizza.
01:01:22 I've been dropped before.
01:01:24 Yeah, great establishment.
01:01:25 Danny knows the owners.
01:01:26 Great people.
01:01:27 We go in there and a bunch of college-aged girls and a couple guys, they have taken over
01:01:35 the speaker at College Pizza.
01:01:37 We walk in and I go, "Danny, this is the bar I was talking about.
01:01:40 This isn't a bar.
01:01:41 It's just a pizza place."
01:01:42 They have taken over the speaker and we walk into the owner, which Danny knows, behind
01:01:45 the bar.
01:01:46 He's going, "What's up, Danny?"
01:01:47 He's just fucking bumping the music.
01:01:51 I walk over.
01:01:54 We're having a conversation.
01:01:56 They go, "What's on next?"
01:01:57 The girls come.
01:01:58 "Oh, play this, play this."
01:01:59 Third time, girl comes up.
01:02:01 It goes to the owner, who is just a middle-aged guy.
01:02:04 He's nice.
01:02:05 Whatever.
01:02:06 She goes, "Play Slut Me Out by N.E.L.E.
01:02:08 Choppa."
01:02:09 He's just like, "Play what?"
01:02:12 I'm obviously, I'm gone.
01:02:15 I'm having a good time.
01:02:17 He goes, "Is this right?"
01:02:19 I can read it.
01:02:20 He starts typing in slow, because that's what he thought he heard.
01:02:24 I just go, "No, no, no.
01:02:26 That is not what they said."
01:02:27 I have to type it in for him.
01:02:30 I'm sitting there like this.
01:02:31 I'm like, "I'm fucking not paying attention."
01:02:35 I type it in.
01:02:36 We get our pizza, fucking great pizza, by the way.
01:02:40 We get back to the apartment and Danny's roommate is sleeping.
01:02:42 I'll put myself on the route list, because when I got to Danny's apartment, I stopped
01:02:46 there to put my bag down and then meet them at the bar.
01:02:49 Danny didn't realize his roommate was coming home.
01:02:51 As I was walking out of their apartment, the roommate was walking in.
01:02:54 The roommate was just like, "Who the fuck are you?
01:02:57 Who the fuck is this guy coming out of my apartment?"
01:03:00 Then we got back later and one of the people we were with, Danny's friend, was just so
01:03:04 drunk that he couldn't keep his voice down.
01:03:06 He was just going, "Are we home yet?"
01:03:08 I was like, "Shut the fuck up, buddy.
01:03:10 Dude, sleep."
01:03:11 It was great.
01:03:13 I'm very excited to go out again.
01:03:16 We can wrap there if you are done as well.
01:03:19 Shall we close it out?
01:03:21 Yeah, I don't really have anything.
01:03:23 Nothing in the chamber left.
01:03:25 That's fine.
01:03:26 We can close with one final question.
01:03:27 I know you hate Christmas.
01:03:28 Are you a Thanksgiving guy?
01:03:29 Because it is almost that time.
01:03:31 I'm pro-Thanksgiving.
01:03:33 I don't care for football.
01:03:34 I think the sports slate on Christmas is far better because I'm obviously a basketball
01:03:39 guy.
01:03:40 Yeah, you know why?
01:03:41 Because nobody annoys me with Thanksgiving.
01:03:44 You know how I know that?
01:03:46 Because you forget that Thanksgiving is in three days.
01:03:50 Yeah, it's fair.
01:03:55 We all know my thoughts on Christmas.
01:03:57 I love Christmas, but Thanksgiving, great holiday.
01:04:01 What is there not to like about a fuck ton of food?
01:04:05 That's basically the holiday, right?
01:04:06 You just eat a shit ton of food and it's on, right?
01:04:09 My fat ass on Thanksgiving.
01:04:11 Adam Silver, get ready to get fat as fuck, buddy.
01:04:14 I did eat a salad tonight, though.
01:04:15 Out of character food.
01:04:16 It was good.
01:04:17 Oh, yeah.
