Unfortunately that sound I heard coming from my diff wasn't a good sound and it had to be replaced. This update goes into detail about the fixes Ford has made to my new Ford Ranger Raptor.

00:00 G'day, I'm Paul. So it's time for another Raptor ownership update.
00:03 Thank you for the great feedback on the first one that we did.
00:06 Today is all about my first service experience,
00:10 plus an issue that has popped up and hopefully not one that I've caused,
00:14 but I'll run you through that shortly.
00:16 If you haven't done so already, subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon
00:18 so you can find out every single time we chat about my Raptor.
00:21 But let's get right into this update.
00:23 Okay, so I've just had my first service.
00:27 It's like the three-monthly courtesy inspection,
00:31 but I did flag, as I mentioned in the last video, the Rough Idle.
00:35 They did some update and kind of didn't really make any difference at all,
00:39 but I'm just taking it as it is because it doesn't seem to affect the way it drives.
00:43 It still accelerates and all that sort of stuff.
00:44 Fine. I've driven down a dirt road.
00:46 Look, I have dirty tires, which is great.
00:49 I also used it as a ute for the very first time.
00:51 My dad got a flat tire on his bike, so I happened to be nearby.
00:55 So we stuck the bike in the back, so we did some load hauling type stuff.
01:01 But today is going to be all about my first service experience and an issue that I'm having.
01:06 And that's why that's here as well.
01:07 So I'll run you through that in a sec.
01:09 So first service experience.
01:10 I booked it in all online.
01:12 There were three recalls to be done, and it was all pretty straightforward.
01:15 I went to the Ford website, put in my rego, and it pulled everything up,
01:19 told me the recalls that had to be done.
01:20 They're all software-related things.
01:22 One was headlights, one was lane departure, and one was something else insignificant.
01:27 And that first service is also them just looking over the car to make sure that everything is working as it should.
01:32 It was at that service that I flagged the rough idle issue as well.
01:36 I dropped the car off at 9am.
01:37 Everything went great.
01:38 They took all the details they needed.
01:40 They offered me a loan car as well, but I had cameraman Sean pick me up in his XR8 ute.
01:45 So we were Ford bros driving back to the office.
01:48 I was a bit surprised to see that I hadn't heard from the dealer till like 3 or 4 o'clock,
01:54 and I decided to give them a buzz and go, "Hey, what's going on with my car?"
01:58 And they said, "Oh, it's just out on a test drive at the moment."
02:00 So I don't know what they were doing all day with it, but at about 11 o'clock,
02:04 they reset the computer thing that I had access to on the phone.
02:08 So obviously something was happening between 11 and 4.
02:11 So I was a bit surprised it took so long.
02:13 And then the guy that I spoke to on the phone had no real idea what they had done to the car or what was going on.
02:17 So we went in, picked up the car, and they just kind of gave me a sheet of paper with what they'd done.
02:24 And no real explanation on the rough idle.
02:26 They just said, "Customer to monitor."
02:28 Okay, so just got the car back.
02:30 I got my vehicle report card.
02:33 Everything's green, which is good.
02:36 I'm glad it's only done 1800 k's.
02:38 But I did tell them about the problem with the idle.
02:41 And it says here, "Checked and tested. Found an update for IPC.
02:45 Carried out update as required. Customer to monitor after service and update."
02:49 Well, I've driven roughly 10 metres, and it is still idling very roughly.
02:54 Now, that brings us on to the problem that I'm having.
02:57 This is a bit reminiscent of my two-year-old, which is the issue that I'm having at the moment.
03:01 And it whines a little bit.
03:03 I don't like whining coming from cars, especially if they're not race cars.
03:06 And it seems to have developed a differential whine.
03:09 And funny thing is, when we did our big ute mega test, the Raptor that we had first,
03:15 it developed the exact same noise that this now has,
03:18 right before the diff started making rattling noises as well,
03:21 and Ford replaced that vehicle.
03:24 I've been chasing Ford for answers on what happened to that car.
03:27 And that was in November last year,
03:28 and they still haven't been able to produce anything for me.
03:30 But this is now making the exact same noise.
03:33 What have I done with it?
03:34 Pretty much nothing.
03:35 We shot the video that we did last time,
03:37 where I did a few hot laps of the proving ground,
03:39 did two donuts in it, and straight after that,
03:42 it started sort of making this whining sound that has progressively become louder.
03:45 It's now at like 50, 80 and 110.
03:48 It's making that whining sound.
03:49 So what I thought we'd do,
03:50 I've borrowed a press car,
03:52 and the whole intention is now we'll go for a bit of a drive at those speeds in the press car,
03:56 see if it makes any noise.
03:57 And then what we'll do is go for a drive at the same speeds in my car
04:01 and see if it makes any noise.
04:02 That has about 11,000 k's on it.
04:03 Mine is 2,000 and something k's.
04:05 So let's see how we go.
04:07 Let's hop in and go for a spin.
04:08 Okey dokey.
04:09 So we are on the Ryanan handling track now in the press Raptor.
04:14 So this is done, yeah, 10,575 k's.
04:17 At 50 k's an hour is when I notice the whine in mine.
04:21 So 50, 80 and 110.
04:22 So I'm just going to accelerate to 50,
04:24 stay around that for a little bit,
04:26 go to 80, then 110,
04:27 and you can just have a listen for yourself.
04:29 (engine noise)
04:38 That's 50 k's an hour,
04:40 not making any weird sounds at all.
04:44 And this is exactly how my Raptor used to sound like when I first got it.
04:49 So it has since developed that whine.
04:51 I'll bump this up to 80 now so you can see what that sounds like.
04:54 So here we go.
04:55 (engine noise)
05:03 80 there and I'll just stay in this speed range for a sec.
05:06 (engine noise)
05:13 Again, can't hear anything even if I go on and off the throttle.
05:17 There's nothing there.
05:19 I'll get up to 110.
05:20 (engine noise)
05:33 No noises at all.
05:35 There you go.
05:35 Press Raptor, perfectly fine.
05:38 Now let's jump into my Raptor and see if we can capture the difference.
05:42 Hopefully we can and hopefully you'll be able to hear it inside the car
05:45 because it is very, very noticeable.
05:48 Okay, we are in my Raptor.
05:50 Now please don't be alarmed if you see a hairy man in the back seat.
05:54 That is Sean and because my daughter's seat is in there,
05:57 he can't fit on that side.
05:59 So here we go.
06:00 So I'm going to get it up to 50 first and this is where I first started hearing it.
06:03 So here we go.
06:04 (engine noise)
06:10 You can hear it there at 50 when I'm on the throttle and then braking ever so slightly.
06:15 (engine noise)
06:21 So definitely there.
06:22 So let's get up to 80 now.
06:25 We'll just get around this first corner on our track.
06:27 If I go through here at 80, we'll end up upside down somewhere.
06:32 Okay, so we'll get up to 80 k's an hour now.
06:35 (engine noise)
06:40 At 80, you can hear it when I roll out of the throttle.
06:42 (engine noise)
06:54 It whines all the way through past 80 k's an hour.
06:57 So it is definitely noticeable here.
06:59 When we get onto the back straight here, I'll crank it up to 110 where you'll notice it
07:03 the most.
07:04 It isn't incredibly loud but it gets really annoying when you're driving down the freeway
07:09 on a quiet stretch of road and like now all you hear is it just whining there for absolutely
07:14 no reason.
07:15 Especially, it's the most annoying when you know it doesn't happen in Raptors that don't
07:19 have this issue.
07:20 So here comes the back straight.
07:22 We'll get it up to 110.
07:23 This is where you notice it the most.
07:25 (engine noise)
07:52 Yeah, not very impressed.
07:55 Pretty frustrated by it.
07:56 So what I'm going to be doing is taking the Raptor to Ford and asking for them to explain
08:03 what's wrong with the differential.
08:06 Doesn't seem to affect performance.
08:07 It still accelerates perfectly fine.
08:08 It does everything perfectly fine but it is uncharacteristic of what a normal Raptor should
08:14 sound like and I think there might be something defective there.
08:18 Whether it's just some insulation or something, I don't know.
08:21 But certainly something I want fixed.
08:22 So I'm going to take it to Ford and I'll give you an update on what they've discovered.
08:27 (engine noise)
08:29 OK, so the time has come for me to drop the car in to the service department here.
08:36 So yeah, like I said in the video, it's got the whine.
08:38 You can see it's got a whine compared to the press car.
08:41 I now have found another owner that has a whine as well so I'll be curious to see what
08:45 they do to fix it and how they can actually get around it.
08:48 According to Ford, we've finally got a response with regards to the press car that had the
08:52 whine.
08:53 They basically did a forensic analysis on the differential that started developing noise
08:58 when we had it in our big ute test.
09:00 What they discovered was that they thought there was a side impact on one of the rear
09:06 wheels at one point which caused an issue internal to the differential.
09:10 So I definitely haven't had a side impact and I also don't let my wife drive the car
09:15 so that also rules her out.
09:17 So yeah, look, I think that I'll be curious to see what they come up with and hopefully
09:21 they can sort the issue out and when we do find out what the issue is, I'll report back
09:26 and see how we go.
09:31 Hey look, it's back.
09:34 We've taken a break from filming the tennis ball so I can explain what's happened to it.
09:39 Let's hop in and go for a quick spin and I'll run you through exactly what's been done to
09:42 it.
09:43 Okay, so we're in the car.
09:44 Have a listen to this.
09:46 No differential whine.
09:48 It is completely gone and that is because I have a brand new differential.
09:53 The rear diff has been replaced which is crazy.
09:57 So there wasn't a fix for it and according to the servicing documents that I got once
10:03 the car was returned, they discovered there wasn't enough diff oil in there and when they
10:08 drained the diff oil that was in there, they found metal fragments which suggested that
10:13 there had been a failure at some point within the diff which I find completely bizarre because
10:18 this car was checked at the factory before it left.
10:20 It was then checked during a pre-delivery process.
10:24 How there wasn't enough diff oil is totally beyond me.
10:27 It also doesn't follow the theme we had with the ute for our mega test because according
10:32 to Ford, when they did a forensic examination on that diff which took them six months to
10:37 do which is crazy, I just kept asking and asking for what had gone on here.
10:40 They said that that had a side strike of some sort.
10:43 So I definitely haven't anything like that.
10:45 I mean I really haven't done anything in this car and by the time I had the diff replaced
10:49 it was less than 4000km's old.
10:51 So pretty sort of disappointed that it came to having to have a differential replaced
10:56 to fix that whining noise.
10:58 At the same time, I also mentioned to them the rough idle and they ended up tightening
11:03 what it says in the service documents are powertrain mounts.
11:05 I don't know what that is.
11:06 I assume that's an engine mount.
11:08 They weren't specific on that so that rough idle is now gone as well and it just feels
11:13 perfectly normal.
11:14 They also did three software recalls.
11:15 So it's six software recalls in total now that I've had since I bought the car.
11:20 So look, I am glad that the diff is replaced and that it's fixed this issue but I am really
11:25 shocked and surprised that the diff on a vehicle that's only several thousand km's old actually
11:29 needed to be replaced.
11:31 Kind of understand it on a press car because I don't know the history of press cars.
11:34 I don't know how other people drive them.
11:36 Some terribly.
11:37 But I know with my car I really haven't done anything crazy at all.
11:42 I've got my daughter's seat in the back and I do highway driving and city driving so it
11:46 is pretty surprising that the diff had already failed on itself that early and especially
11:51 in a performance car.
11:52 I mean, what is it made of, paper mache or something?
11:54 I'm pretty surprised by that.
11:55 So let me know in the comments section below.
11:57 Do you drive a Raptor?
12:00 Drive it at 50, 80 and 110 and just have a listen for that whine that you heard during
12:05 our recording.
12:06 It was really hard to capture that but I think you can get the essence of that whine.
12:10 Do you have an issue with your diff?
12:12 If so, let me know in the comments section below.
12:14 I mentioned earlier that I do know at least one other owner that has that issue with their
12:18 differential and I'm keen to know if anyone watching this has that same problem.
12:22 Also just want to really quickly touch on the experience at the dealership.
12:26 Look, the experience was fantastic.
12:27 They looked after me really well.
12:29 They gave me a higher car.
12:31 They were really accommodating in terms of updates and just keeping me posted on how
12:35 everything was going.
12:36 What I didn't love though was booking the actual service in.
12:39 I booked it online on the Ford's website and I did this in April, right at the start of
12:43 April and the earliest date they could offer me was late May.
12:47 As we got close to that late May booking, I got a call from the service department and
12:51 they said, "Oh, what's the problem?"
12:52 And I said, "I've explained it all in the thing already."
12:54 And they said, "Oh, well you'll need to book a diagnosis."
12:56 And the earliest diagnosis they could book was like the end of June.
13:00 So it took me like two months to actually get it seen by a dealer and I said on the
13:04 phone, "Are you happy with me driving this?"
13:06 And they said, "Yeah, it's fine to keep driving it until you get that booking."
13:09 So I don't know if that made the matter worse or what, but yeah, it's back in action now.
13:14 I did a few sort of hot laps here on the proving ground earlier and everything feels perfectly
13:18 normal and above board.
13:20 So yeah, look, I'm disappointed I had to have the diff replaced.
13:23 I just think that's crazy on a car that's so new and a car that really hasn't done a
13:27 great deal of hard work.
13:29 So yeah, let me know if you've had a similar experience in the comment section below.
13:33 Now, what about our next video?
13:34 What do you want to see on our ownership update with the Raptor?
13:38 As I record this, I've done 5,300 Ks, so I've put a little bit more mileage on the vehicle,
13:43 but let me know in the comment section below what else do you want to see me talk about
13:46 with this?
13:47 I'm keen for your feedback.
13:50 So thank you for watching, and if you did enjoy this video, please make sure you like
13:54 it and you share it with your mates.
13:55 And if you haven't done so already, subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon.
13:58 But until next time, take it easy.
