00:00 G'day, I'm Paul. Today we're doing a comparison between the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Kia Sorento.
00:04 If you're new to our channel, welcome. If you're not, you'll know that this isn't a format that we've done before.
00:08 So we're trying this out, want to see how it works.
00:10 We thought about getting both cars back in and doing this all from scratch, but I don't know, what's the point?
00:15 It's more efficient if we can just take the detailed reviews
00:18 we've already shot and then put this together.
00:20 What I'll be able to do is give you a verdict at the end of each section and then at the end of the video,
00:24 I'll let you know which of these two cars you should be picking.
00:28 So we are comparing the Hyundai Santa Fe Highlander and the Kia Sorento GT line.
00:33 They're both top specs, both seven seats, both diesel and both around the $65,000 mark.
00:39 If you do want to skip ahead to any other parts of this comparison, you can use the time codes up on the screen
00:43 or if you're on YouTube, just scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:46 And I've left links to the full reviews of both of these cars in the description.
00:50 And if you haven't done so already, make sure you subscribe to our channel
00:53 so you can find out every single time we drive something new.
00:57 Let's talk exterior and we'll start with the Santa Fe.
00:59 You've got seven external colors to pick from and everything but blue and white are about $700 extra.
01:04 Now, let's quickly talk about the design because Igor, cameraman, thinks it looks absolutely amazing.
01:10 I'm not so convinced.
01:12 I always thought the last one looked okay, but I think they've taken a step backwards with this.
01:16 Let me know what you think down in the comments section.
01:18 Okay, so let's start with the grille.
01:20 It is a whopper.
01:21 So big grille down here, you've got a huge Hyundai logo and that's finished in an interesting material.
01:26 It's like a reflective sort of glossy chrome style material.
01:31 I think this actually looks good, this part of the car.
01:33 Same with the chrome highlights down the bottom.
01:35 It's like a brushed aluminium in terms of the design.
01:38 So I think that all looks good.
01:39 Where I think it takes a little deviation though is with the headlight cluster.
01:42 So up the top you have LED daytime running lights.
01:45 You also have an indicator built in, but this is the headlight cluster.
01:48 So full LED headlights.
01:50 You can see those projectors just there.
01:52 They're adaptive as well.
01:53 It's just interesting.
01:54 It's a different philosophy and a different way to do things.
01:56 Kind of looks a bit like the Palisade as well.
01:58 So you can see where they drew that inspiration from.
02:00 But yeah, let me know what you think of the design.
02:02 We'll whip around to the side here.
02:04 Now you've got 20-inch alloy wheels.
02:06 They're whoppers.
02:06 I quite like this wheel design.
02:08 It's got that glossy chrome matte finish on the outside and then a graphite finish on the inside.
02:14 And they've got this sort of design that makes them look like they're moving.
02:18 See how they sort of spin back a little bit.
02:20 I'm going to refer to my VPSS Commodore here for Hyundai's design inspiration.
02:25 Kind of a similar design where it spins back.
02:26 So yeah, interesting.
02:28 Low profile-ish tyre.
02:29 45 profile along the side there.
02:31 Given Hyundai does local ride and handling tuning, I'm hoping this actually rides well
02:36 on Australian roads.
02:36 Now you can see here that they've been a little restrained in terms of the wheel arch flares.
02:40 So normally this would be like a black plastic cladding, but they've kept it body coloured,
02:45 which I think is a better look because it blends in far more nicely with the rest of the package.
02:49 Around here you have an indicator built into that wing mirror with a camera there for the
02:52 360 camera.
02:53 We have roof rails, privacy glass and then around the back here you have that spoiler
02:58 built into the tailgate, a shark fin antenna.
03:00 And while this looks fairly common to the last generation of the Santa Fe, you can see
03:04 here that these LED taillights have been refined a bit.
03:07 So get a bit more definition to them.
03:09 They kind of look like the Audi e-tron GT with that sort of wraparound styling.
03:14 So quite like that design.
03:16 Then you have the engine designation there, 2.2 diesel H-Trac because this is all-wheel
03:20 drive and then Santa Fe plus the spec, the Highlander.
03:22 Righto, moving on to the Sorento, you've got seven colours to choose from.
03:26 All but white is an additional $695.
03:28 Now onto styling.
03:30 I think this is probably the coolest part about this car.
03:32 It's a little hard to see from front on, but looking through there you can see like a chisel
03:37 that comes down around the front here and then tapers in.
03:39 You've got this 3D looking grille.
03:41 This car turns a lot of heads despite the fact it's A) a Kia and B) an SUV.
03:46 You wouldn't expect those two things a few years ago, so it's cool to see that they have
03:50 evolved the styling.
03:51 Now it's interesting here as well that with these dark colours, there's a beautiful offset
03:55 between the body colour and then this piano black.
03:57 I'm normally not a fan of piano black, but it really works well here offset against those
04:01 dark colours.
04:02 And then when I talk about technology, you can see the litany of sensors and cameras
04:06 that are all around this car and I'll run through those in a bit more detail later on,
04:10 but it's good to see that they have got with the times here and when you are spending around
04:14 the $65,000 mark, you're getting technology on this car that you would expect to see on
04:19 some high-end European cars, which is pretty cool.
04:21 In terms of headlight technology, full LED headlights.
04:24 This section down here is the LED daytime running light, but it's also the indicator,
04:28 so when you flick that on, that really lights up nicely and it looks really cool at night
04:32 time.
04:32 A little chisel in there with an air duct as well and then around the side here, 20-inch
04:37 alloy wheels.
04:38 Normally that sends shivers down my spine because it means the ride is going to be terrible,
04:43 so let's see what it's like today.
04:44 There are 45 profile tyres, so there is a fair bit of rubber there, but 20-inch alloy
04:49 wheels on a family SUV can be a little bit dangerous, so we'll see how that goes.
04:53 But I like the design, it's like a sort of brushed shadow chrome.
04:57 It looks pretty cool.
04:58 We'll jump around to the side of the car.
05:00 A little bit more of that brushed chrome along the side here.
05:03 Let me know in the comments below, what is that actually called?
05:05 It's, I don't think it's aluminium, but it's got that brushed look to it.
05:08 Indicator built into the mirror there.
05:10 You've got a panoramic glass roof, roof rails, privacy glass.
05:14 Come around to the back here, I think this is the best angle.
05:16 Have a look at these lights, how sleek are they?
05:18 They sort of taper around the side there and it has a bit of that American design built
05:23 into it.
05:23 LED lights there in those columns.
05:25 You've got big Sorento badge down the bottom there and then GT line as well.
05:30 It's quite a nice accomplished looking rear end and it gives this car a bit of masculinity.
05:34 It looks pretty tough out on the road, despite the fact it has fake exhaust pipes.
05:39 Okay, so I know that design is entirely subjective, but I think Kia has done a better job
05:44 with the Sorento over and above the Santa Fe in terms of making it feel newer.
05:48 When you look at the current generation of Sorento compared to the previous one, they
05:51 look completely different.
05:52 Whereas with the Santa Fe, it kind of looks the same as the previous generation and that's
05:56 despite the fact both of these sit on a brand new platform.
05:58 So in terms of a verdict on the exterior, I think the Sorento has the win here.
06:02 Now, despite the fact they both share the same platform, when we're talking about interiors,
06:07 they look entirely different.
06:08 Okay, we are inside the Santa Fe.
06:10 Let's start with the key.
06:11 Here it is here.
06:11 So you have lock, unlock, boot.
06:14 You have a remote parking feature plus a remote start function, which will run the heater
06:19 or the air conditioner if you need to.
06:21 Hyundai logo on the back.
06:22 Proximity sensing keys, you just leave that in your pocket, grab the door handle and then
06:26 once you're inside, you have a push button start.
06:27 Also, I like the material on that.
06:29 That's sort of cold to the touch, a bit of real metal, which is cool.
06:32 Okay, design.
06:33 Let's talk about that first.
06:35 Sorry about the beeping Kia Hyundai product.
06:36 It means throughout the whole video it's going to be beeping.
06:39 Um, yeah, design.
06:40 I really like what they've done here.
06:42 So this is getting expensive now.
06:44 It's about $70,000 on the road.
06:45 So you are spending a fair bit of money on this car, but I think they make you feel good
06:50 about spending that kind of money.
06:51 So we've gone to a lot of effort to do soft touch materials along the dashboard.
06:56 You can see here with the contrast colors that it really makes the cabin pop.
07:00 Then you've got this infotainment system that's lodged up the top there, a little bit
07:04 of speaker branding for what's going on around the cabin.
07:06 And you'll notice with the speaker covers, they also have a 3D effect similar to the
07:10 Sorento.
07:11 That continues down here where you've got this sort of, um, it's not metal, but it's
07:16 made to look like a brushed metal material.
07:18 And then the seats as well, they've got the diamond stitching on them.
07:21 It is a really nice looking cabin, even to, sorry, I keep finding things here, even to
07:26 the sort of suede headliner as well.
07:27 So it does feel high end and premium, but I don't know.
07:30 I just think it's let down by this.
07:33 There are so many buttons there.
07:34 It is really confusing to look at, and I wish they could just condense that a little bit
07:38 instead of having a button explosion there.
07:40 So anyway, now touch points, they are soft on the center console there, fairly soft on
07:46 the door as well.
07:47 How soft are they?
07:48 Well, we've tested them with our durometer.
07:49 If you want to see how this car compares to other cars we've tested before, follow the
07:54 link in the description.
07:55 Now, build quality.
07:56 What's it like?
07:57 That all feels really nice and solid, which is excellent.
08:01 We're inside the Sorento now, and we'll start with the key.
08:03 This is a slightly different design to the standard Kia key, slightly larger.
08:07 So you can see on the back there, there is nothing.
08:09 If I tilt it around to the side, you have lock, unlock and boot, which you can push
08:14 and hold because it's a powered tailgate.
08:16 On the front there, you can see remote engine start, a remote parking feature, then a Kia
08:20 logo down the bottom.
08:21 It's also a proximity sensing key, so you just leave that in your pocket, grab the door
08:24 handle and then once you're inside, hit the start button.
08:27 Now, what about styling?
08:28 When I first hopped into this car, I was really, really impressed with how high-end this looks.
08:33 When you're paying $65,000 odd for a top specification Sorento, you actually don't feel
08:38 too bad about it because it is beautifully presented.
08:41 It looks high-end and premium.
08:42 It kind of reminds me a bit of an S-Class in the way that those screens are set up with
08:46 those two big screens next to each other.
08:47 But then beyond that, you have this brushed sort of, I don't know what this is.
08:51 It's not aluminium, it's some weird material, but inside the door inlays as well, they light
08:56 up, so you have a lot of ambient lighting that just looks fantastic at night.
08:59 Even the detail here around these air vents, they just look really cool.
09:03 Now, this is interesting as well, the gear shifter has gone, so the traditional one has
09:07 been replaced with this circular unit.
09:09 Obviously, it just works by turning it, but I love the fact that this is metallic and
09:14 knurled.
09:14 Have a listen.
09:15 It just makes this car feel really luxurious, those little touches there.
09:20 It is let down by piano black and, I don't know, I've said this a million times, they
09:24 continue using this stuff and look at that, there are just fingerprints all over that.
09:30 I don't know, it just seems impossible to keep clean, so a strange thing to have.
09:33 What about the materials?
09:34 Well, all around the car here, everything feels nice and soft.
09:38 And then touch points, that's all nice and soft.
09:40 And then on the door as well, that's all nicely padded.
09:42 But how soft is it?
09:43 Well, we've got our durometer here, which tests from 0 to 100 and we've tested all the
09:47 surfaces around this car.
09:49 If you want to see how it compares to other cars, simply click on the link in the description
09:53 below.
09:53 Now, what about build quality?
09:55 Look, it seems pretty good.
09:58 This is a little bit loose around here, but for the most part, all of this fits in really
10:03 nicely.
10:04 Now, I was pretty impressed with the interiors of both of these cars.
10:07 When you're talking about this kind of money, they actually feel like they're a whole lot
10:11 more expensive and they kind of give you that Euro car vibe as opposed to just being, and
10:16 I say just being, but just being a Korean car, you know.
10:18 It's not something that you would expect to see in this segment.
10:22 So, a big tick on both of the fronts in terms of luxury.
10:25 I think the Kia is better presented, but it's the Hyundai that feels more premium.
10:29 I love the fact that you can pick the different interior colours.
10:32 You've got that beautiful headliner as well.
10:34 They really go that extra step to make the interior feel more inviting.
10:37 I don't like the button explosion though.
10:39 There are so many buttons on that centre stack, but if you put that to one side, I think the
10:43 Santa Fe nudges ahead ever so slightly in the interior stacks and takes the win there.
10:47 Now this will probably surprise nobody, but the infotainment systems are very similar
10:50 because they come from the same parent company.
10:53 So let's have a closer look at those now.
10:54 Okay, let's start with the Santa Fe.
10:56 So it consists of a 10.25-inch colour touchscreen.
11:01 You do have shortcut buttons down here on this sub menu, and then you can also use the
11:05 buttons alongside the left-hand side of the screen.
11:08 So it has inbuilt satellite navigation.
11:10 This is what that looks like.
11:12 Unfortunately, like all Hyundai and Kia products, pressing the voice recognition button doesn't
11:16 do anything unless you have smartphone mirroring paired.
11:18 Now speaking of which, smartphone mirroring comes in the form of Apple CarPlay and Android
11:22 Auto.
11:23 It is a cabled system.
11:24 I'll show you what Apple CarPlay looks like first.
11:26 So it doesn't take up the entire screen, which is really interesting.
11:29 It's sort of all boxed off to the corner there.
11:32 If I press that, no, it doesn't help.
11:33 So maybe there's a setting in there.
11:35 If there is, let me know in the comments section, but I couldn't really find anything.
11:38 And this is what Android Auto looks like.
11:40 Also, not a full screen integration, which is interesting.
11:44 But yep, nice and snappy there, no dramas.
11:47 Audio comes in the form of AM, FM and DAB plus digital radio.
11:51 There's also a Harman Kardon branded sound system.
11:54 Now ahead of the driver is another digital display.
11:57 I'll show you what that looks like.
11:58 On the left, you have your speedometer.
12:00 On the right, you have warnings plus a tachometer.
12:03 The display also changes when you flick through different drive modes.
12:06 You can also change the centre of the display too, to show you other things.
12:10 So really nice integration and very quick and snappy.
12:13 It's quite sharp and fast, which I love.
12:15 Now, what about the Sorento?
12:16 Earlier, I mentioned that this car is jam-packed full of technology,
12:19 and a lot of it falls into the infotainment category.
12:23 It all starts over here with the 10.25-inch infotainment system.
12:26 Now, you can't really see anything here because we're in the middle of nowhere,
12:30 but this gives you a shaded map overlay along with the clock and the time,
12:34 plus your battery discharge warning and also the driver profiles in the top left of the screen.
12:39 But if we swipe over, this is where you'll find the rest of the menus.
12:42 You have shortcut buttons on the side there,
12:44 so you can go straight to your inbuilt satellite navigation.
12:47 That doesn't require any internet connectivity or a phone connected to the vehicle.
12:52 And then in terms of radio, you have AM,
12:54 sings to us, AM/FM/DAB+ digital radio, so it's a fully featured system.
13:00 In terms of phone connectivity, you have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
13:04 It's a wired system, so you've got to have a cable there.
13:07 And I'll show you what that looks like if we go to the home menu and then hit Apple CarPlay.
13:12 The resolution is incredible.
13:15 If I get right in there, I can't even see the pixels.
13:18 It is super high res. It takes up the entire screen.
13:20 That is a very, very impressive setup and absolutely love the look of that.
13:25 Now, in terms of Android Auto, I'll show you what that looks like.
13:27 It's not that great because it's all compressed into that little screen.
13:31 It's not a full screen integration like Apple CarPlay,
13:34 so it is kind of limited in that sense. So that's a little bit disappointing.
13:37 Moving on from the central infotainment screen,
13:39 ahead of the driver you have this 12.3-inch display.
13:42 Another high-resolution screen.
13:44 On the left-hand side, you have a speedometer.
13:46 On the right-hand side, you have a tachometer.
13:48 Now, if you scroll through the centre here, you'll be able to see the different context menus.
13:52 So you have a display there for the speedometer and a tension level display,
13:56 and then it goes through and gives you other options for a compass,
14:00 the driver assistance controls, tyre pressures, so on and so forth.
14:03 And then ahead of the driver, you also have a head-up display that shows you
14:06 your speed, also the radar cruise and lane-keeping assistant.
14:10 The other interesting feature there is the blind spot monitor appears not only on the head-up
14:15 display and in the wing mirrors, but also in this cluster here,
14:18 and we'll have a look at that when we go for a drive.
14:20 Yeah, so the infotainment systems are really similar,
14:23 but the good news is that they work really well.
14:25 Big resolution screens, and it also means that when you do hook up your smartphone for mirroring,
14:29 everything looks nice and sharp.
14:30 The only downside is there's no wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto,
14:35 despite the fact you can get that on the cheaper versions of these infotainment systems.
14:38 But if you put those things to one side,
14:40 it is surprising just how much they've been able to cram into these infotainment systems.
14:44 Now, what about safety?
14:45 They're both family cars, you want to have a pretty comprehensive set of safety features,
14:49 and thankfully, both of them do.
14:51 These include things like autonomous emergency braking forwards and reverse,
14:55 turn assist at junctions, multi-collision brake assistance, blind spot monitoring and assist,
15:00 lane-keeping assistant, lane-following assistant,
15:03 rear cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise control.
15:06 Now, I'm not going to bother giving you a verdict for the safety because,
15:08 I don't know, they're both virtually identical in terms of the safety features they both get.
15:13 But where they do differ a little bit is in terms of comfort and practicality for the first,
15:16 second, third rows and the boot.
15:18 First up, let's look at the Santa Fe.
15:20 Talking about practicality, we'll start with connectivity.
15:23 You have one USB port here, you have a 12-volt outlet down here and then another USB port there.
15:29 You can also charge your phone wirelessly and it's quite a clever system.
15:33 I haven't seen something like this before.
15:35 So the charging pad sits like that and then you slide your phone in behind a set of teeth.
15:40 So, really cool setup.
15:41 Now, in terms of storage for your phone, it can live in the cup holders in that wireless
15:46 charging slot down here on that storage tray.
15:49 Your coffee cup has a rightful place over here with plenty of clearance for the lid.
15:53 Bottle storage, without the tape.
15:57 Down here, you can store a bottle, you've got more storage up the top there.
16:00 There's also teeth in that one.
16:01 You've got storage for a bottle plus odds and ends inside the door.
16:04 Center console is huge, it's nice and deep so you can see how big that is.
16:09 We also have a glove box down here with pretty decent storage and then another trinket tray
16:14 just above it.
16:15 Moving on to comfort, you have tri-zone automatic climate control.
16:19 You have heated and cooled seats for the front row, heated steering wheel.
16:23 The seats are electrically adjustable in the front row.
16:26 You also have memory for the driver's seat.
16:28 Steering is tilt and reach adjustable as well and your million buttons are easy to
16:34 reach while you're driving.
16:35 And finally, you have a panoramic glass sunroof.
16:38 Okay, we're in the second row of the Santa Fe.
16:41 Let's start off with room.
16:42 It's got a decent amount of knee room, heaps of toe room and headroom is reasonable despite
16:48 this giant roof here.
16:50 It's actually massive.
16:51 It looks really good.
16:52 It goes all the way back behind your head so you get some nice visibility out of the roof.
16:56 Let's talk about our bottle and where we can store that.
16:58 So you have a centre armrest here with two cup holders plus a little mini cup holder.
17:03 You can easily fit your bottle in there.
17:05 Then you also have storage inside the door for a bottle.
17:08 You've got map pockets.
17:10 You have two USB points down here.
17:12 You have air vents plus the ability to move the passenger seat forwards and backwards.
17:17 If you own one of these, tell me if that gets annoying with the kids.
17:21 You also have heated seats on the two outboard seats.
17:24 There's blinds that pop up here to give you a bit of privacy.
17:28 You've got ISOFIX points on the two outboard seats and then three top tether points.
17:32 Now what you can do as well, it's a 60/40 split folding seat.
17:35 You can actually give your third row passengers a little bit more room by shifting this forwards
17:40 and backwards.
17:41 Now to access the third row, it's pretty straightforward.
17:43 There is a button on top of the seat.
17:45 You can actually either fold this flat or by pushing the button it tumbles and then slides
17:52 forward.
17:52 Now I have to caveat this by saying this is obviously a spot for kids, but let's see how
17:57 it goes with adults anyway.
17:58 So I'll climb in.
17:59 Gee, I think I'm too old for this.
18:03 Okay, there we go.
18:04 So what I'll do now is bring this seat back and then lock that into position.
18:09 I can actually move that back if I need to.
18:12 So this gives you an idea of how much room I have here.
18:14 This is the standard position and there I'm sort of wedged up against it, but because
18:18 the second row can slide forwards, I actually have a reasonable amount of room here.
18:22 I've got decent toe room, knee room's fine, my head is sort of wedged up against the roof,
18:26 but I think if you had to travel back here as an adult, it'd be perfectly fine.
18:30 You have storage slots off to the sides with cup holders on each side.
18:34 There's one USB port over here and your right hand side passenger also controls the third
18:39 row AC and there's air vents for both sides as well.
18:43 So Igor, do you want to just show us how much leg room there is behind the passenger seat
18:46 there?
18:47 So that gives you an idea of just how much room there is when you have an adult back
18:50 here.
18:51 I don't hate it to be honest.
18:52 Let's talk cargo space.
18:54 Crack this open.
18:55 So being a three row SUV, you don't really have a great deal of space behind the third
18:59 row.
19:00 Here you have around 100 litres of cargo space and you'll see that it's not really
19:05 enough to actually store anything meaningful because that won't close with the boot in
19:11 that position.
19:11 Under the cargo floor, you have a cargo blind.
19:15 The actual spare tyre is underneath the vehicle.
19:18 Now let's drop this third row because there's a couple of configuration options in terms
19:23 of space that's available.
19:24 So to do that, you just pull these tabs.
19:27 That drops out of the way.
19:28 There we go.
19:30 Now with this space here, you can configure it two ways.
19:32 In its current form, it's around 600 litres but if you slide the second row forward, it
19:37 can go up to 800 litres and I'll show you what it looks like with our bags in there.
19:40 There you go.
19:43 So you can see there's plenty of storage space there.
19:46 There is one other party trick and that is to drop the second row which you can do from
19:49 back here by pushing these two buttons.
19:52 That increases the space to around 1,700 litres so it is a whopper.
19:56 Moving on to the Kia Sorento and let's start with connectivity.
19:59 You have one USB port that's available for smartphone mirroring.
20:03 You have two charging USB ports, a wireless phone charger of a Qi standard.
20:09 Now you may be wondering where is the 12-volt outlet here?
20:11 Nowhere to be found.
20:13 This is the first car I've seen without a 12-volt outlet up front.
20:16 There's only one in the second row so it's interesting that moving on from that.
20:19 I don't really have an issue with that.
20:20 I can't think of many devices that we have in our lives anymore that require a 12-volt
20:25 auxiliary socket.
20:26 Moving on to storage, where are you going to put your phone?
20:29 Well, it neatly lives in there.
20:31 You've also got your wireless phone charger and just next to it you have another little
20:34 slot as well.
20:35 Then in bottle storage, I like that.
20:38 Easily fits a bottle of virtually any size.
20:41 It's got teeth on the side.
20:42 If you jump over to the door pockets, you have a bin there for the bottle and also storage
20:47 alongside it.
20:48 Centre console, you have a generous storage space there.
20:52 I'll give you an idea of how deep that is, plus a little tray.
20:55 And finally, you have this, the glove box, plenty of room for the manual and your water
21:00 bottle.
21:01 In terms of comfort, you have dual zone climate control, heated and cooled seats, plus a
21:06 heated steering wheel.
21:07 You have a litany of seat adjustments here in terms of electric control.
21:12 And then on top of that, they are Nappa leather seats, so that is high-end stuff.
21:17 I like the way they're designed as well with these perforations, really nicely ribbed.
21:21 Comfort-wise, they feel good.
21:24 They are a little bit firm.
21:26 We're keen to go for a longer drive in this to see what it's like, but for the most part,
21:30 they feel nice.
21:31 They don't really hug me in too much.
21:32 They feel like they're built for slightly bigger people.
21:36 Steering wheel sits nicely in the hand and then you have the paddle shifters stuck behind
21:39 there as well.
21:40 Okay, moving on to second row of Sorento.
21:43 I'm surprised by the amount of legroom that I have.
21:45 Check this out.
21:46 Plenty of knee room, loads of toe room and headroom is a little bit cramped, but okay
21:52 for someone my height.
21:53 I think if you're a little taller, you're going to be rubbing up against that.
21:56 But there are a lot of highlights here to talk about.
21:58 So, map pockets in the back of the seats.
22:01 You have air vents as well.
22:02 You can adjust the passenger seat, so you can move that forwards and backwards as required.
22:08 Then you have this clever placement for two USB ports for charging as well, plus an additional
22:14 USB port down the bottom and a 12-volt outlet.
22:18 Over on the doors, you have these shades that come up like that.
22:22 More of that sort of cool textured material in the doors there.
22:26 You have heated seats for the two outboard seats in the second row.
22:29 That's activated by using the switch on the door.
22:32 In terms of bottle storage, we have a center armrest here with two bottle holders.
22:37 They fit fairly easily and then inside the door you have a bottle holder up the top,
22:41 but then an additional one down the bottom.
22:43 So, they really have thought about everything here in terms of making it comfortable.
22:46 If you do need more room in the second row or for your third row, you can move the second
22:51 row forwards and backwards and then it also reclines as well, which is handy.
22:55 You have ISOFIX points on the two outboard seats and the really cool thing here is that
23:00 all three rows have ISOFIX points and you also have two top tether points in the third
23:04 row as well, making this an SUV that can actually have baby seats all the way in the back there.
23:09 Speaking of which, third row can you fit adults in?
23:13 I have a feeling it'll be a kid-only zone, but it's worth a shot.
23:16 Now, they have developed a clever system here and increased the amount that the second row
23:20 slides forward to give you access to the third row.
23:22 You can either push this button down here or the same button up the top.
23:26 One push of that drops and slides everything forward.
23:29 Then once you're in there, you pull the seats up either from the boot using this lever or
23:34 from here, which is a little trickier.
23:36 They lock into place and then you climb in, which is a bit of an awkward task for an adult.
23:43 Okay, I'm in.
23:46 Headroom's pretty compromised, but I'm in and I'm fitting okay.
23:50 Let's see what it's like if I slide this backwards and then lock that into position.
23:56 That's actually not too bad.
23:57 I've got knee room there.
23:58 Toe room is a little compromised, but I'd be okay if I had to sit here.
24:02 Igor, can you just give us a look at how much knee room there is there?
24:05 Okay, so it's not the most knee room in the world, but it's more than enough for me to
24:10 be able to be comfortable here, which is a little surprising.
24:13 In terms of connectivity, you have USB points attached to here, a 12-volt outlet, your own
24:18 blower controls, your own air vents.
24:20 You've also got two cup holders, a little storage tray and then a grab handle for the
24:23 kids to reef themselves inside.
24:25 But there is a downside.
24:27 While you have curtain airbags, they only go up to around here, which means your third
24:31 row passengers won't actually have airbag protection around the side of their head.
24:35 So that is one of the biggest downsides with Sorento, and I can't understand why they're
24:39 not able to extend the airbags so it actually covers the third row as well.
24:43 Let's talk cargo space.
24:44 Often with these three-row SUVs, power tailgate, you don't really have much room behind the
24:49 third row.
24:50 Here you have just under 200 litres of cargo space.
24:53 We'll try our luggage in a sec, but under here you can store your cargo blown, which
24:57 is a really good feature.
24:58 You have some netting, the jack for the full-size spare tyre and a little bit of spare space
25:02 there to keep your belongings away from prying eyes.
25:06 Let's see how we go.
25:08 So laptop bag fits in fine.
25:10 We'll see if it fits our suitcase.
25:12 It does, but will it close?
25:15 That is the ultimate test.
25:17 Let's see, fingers crossed.
25:19 No, it's not going to close.
25:20 That's okay.
25:21 So you cannot fit luggage in there behind the third row, but you probably could fit
25:26 shopping and stuff like that.
25:27 What happens when you drop the third row?
25:29 Well, you have just over 600 litres of cargo space and we can quite easily then fit everything
25:38 in, which is easily done.
25:41 And then finally, if you drop the second row, which is done using these buttons just here,
25:45 you have a little over 2000 litres of cargo space.
25:49 Yes, I know, keep mentioning this.
25:51 They're both on the same platform, but you will notice a few minute differences there
25:54 in things like USB placement, but for the most part, they are pretty similar.
25:58 Where they both stumble a little bit though, is not having airbag coverage for the third
26:03 row.
26:03 It sort of covers half the window and look, for the most part, you're going to be fine,
26:07 but it really is disappointing that they haven't gone to that extra length to actually fit
26:11 airbags that cover the entire side length of that car, inclusive of the third row,
26:15 especially if you've got little ones in the back there.
26:18 So arguably the most important part about these cars is driving them.
26:21 So let's hit the road and see how they both fare.
26:24 All right, we're on the road now in the Santa Fe and powering this is a 2.2 litre turbocharged
26:30 four-cylinder diesel engine, makes 148 kilowatts of power and 440 Newton meters of torque,
26:37 and that's made it to an eight-speed dual clutch transmission.
26:41 Now, what's the gearbox like?
26:42 You know, I'm not a huge fan of dual clutch transmissions.
26:45 This one's not terrible.
26:47 Let me just have a little look-see here from standing start.
26:49 Yeah, it's okay.
26:52 Feels very much like the Sorento where it's just fairly, I don't know, fuss-free and not
26:57 too sort of laggy or not too sort of elastic like a lot of dual clutch gearboxes are.
27:03 This one's actually quite good.
27:04 If we give it a punch, yeah, it's quite responsive there.
27:08 It's ready to sort of get up and go and it's never really in a dead spot.
27:12 It's leaning on that torque band.
27:13 In fact, this engine is super eager.
27:15 Find that it's always just ready to punch you in the back and in fact, it feels a little
27:19 more eager than the Sorento.
27:20 So I'd be interested to see whether they have a different tune on this compared to the Sorento.
27:24 Let's talk fuel economy.
27:25 So Hyundai claims a combined 6.1 litres per 100km.
27:29 We're currently consuming 8.4, which is near enough.
27:34 And that's pretty decent given that we've been doing low-speed driving.
27:38 So I think that's a commendable figure for a car this size.
27:41 You've got to remember that these are getting bigger and bigger with all the systems they're
27:44 putting into them, so that's a good number to have for a seven-seat SUV.
27:48 You can get the Santa Fe in both all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive.
27:52 This one here is the all-wheel drive model and it uses a system called H-Trac, which
27:56 is effectively a permanent all-wheel drive setup.
27:58 So I'll flick over to our all-wheel drive menu here.
28:00 You can see right now in smart mode, it's sending torque to both the front and the rear.
28:05 So depending on which setting you have it in and what the computer thinks it should
28:08 be doing, it will then shuffle torque between the front and rear axles.
28:12 Now, speaking of drive modes, I've got a few to pick from here.
28:14 So smart, sport, eco and comfort.
28:17 Each of those will vary the amount of torque split between the front and rear axle and
28:20 how it deals with that.
28:21 And then as you flick between them, you can see the menus change there ahead of the driver,
28:26 which I think is pretty cool.
28:27 Very sharp looking setup.
28:29 I quite like the sport mode.
28:30 So it adds weight to the steering and it makes the gearbox really sharp and quick.
28:36 It's surprisingly sort of punchy when you sort of get stuck into the throttle, so that's
28:41 really impressive.
28:42 You're not going to be doing any real off-roading in this.
28:45 You do have a couple of off-road drive modes to choose from, snow, mud and sand, but with
28:50 a ground clearance of 176 mil, it's not really enough to get you anywhere.
28:54 Hyundai doesn't offer an official 0-100 time, but we thought we'd put it up against
28:59 our stopwatch anyway.
29:10 Okay, we'll go back to smart mode here.
29:12 Let's talk about the ride.
29:13 So this has an Australian ride and handling tune and I've got to say it is really impressive.
29:18 We're out here on a country road doing 80 k's an hour and it just soaks up everything
29:22 really nicely.
29:23 So it's just on the sportier side of comfortable.
29:26 So you do feel it sort of moving around as you hit bumps and that kind of thing, but
29:29 it's incredibly compliant and just the way that it soaks everything up on 20-inch alloy
29:34 wheels, I think just shows you how much effort they've put into tuning it for Australian
29:38 road conditions.
29:39 Let's talk handling.
29:40 Slot this over to sport mode.
29:42 I really do like how sharp that throttle becomes.
29:46 Okay, yes, I know this is no sports car, but if we punch it through here, that's actually
29:52 pretty fun.
29:53 Yeah, it's got some urge, like it sits fairly flat, the steering's nice and responsive,
29:59 you get a bit of feel through the wheel as well and then you can just punch it out of
30:02 a corner.
30:02 So yeah, thumbs up for handling.
30:04 In terms of cabin noise and wind noise, there isn't a great deal of wind noise that I'm
30:08 noticing here on this country road and there isn't a great deal of tyre noise coming into
30:13 the cabin.
30:13 You do hear it roaring a little bit over coarse chip sections, but for the most part it's
30:17 a pretty quiet place to be seated.
30:19 Now let's talk visibility.
30:20 So out the front there, it's excellent.
30:22 At the rear, it's pretty good.
30:23 The wing mirrors are big as well and you have the blind spot monitor built into them too
30:28 and when you put the indicator on, you get the little blind spot camera come on on either
30:33 side of that cluster, which I think is just such a fantastic feature.
30:36 It really helps you when it comes to driving in and around the city around cyclists and
30:39 also with parking.
30:40 Finally, turning circle, 11.4 metres.
30:43 So it's not a terrible turning circle, but it's not the tightest in the world either,
30:48 but it should be okay for driving in and around the city and doing U-turns and that kind of
30:52 thing.
30:52 We've just hit the road in the Sorento and let me run through the drivetrain under the
30:57 bonnet here.
30:58 So 2.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine, it makes 148 kilowatts of power and
31:04 440 newton metres of torque.
31:07 So not a big step forward over the last generation, but that's not such a bad thing because the
31:11 engine itself was always fine to begin with.
31:14 What they have changed though is the gearbox.
31:15 It now uses an eight-speed dual clutch.
31:18 It's a wet clutch.
31:18 This is a brand new gearbox to Hyundai and Kia and it's been developed with performance
31:23 applications in mind.
31:24 So a slightly varied version of this is going to find its way into the new Hyundai i30N
31:29 with DCT.
31:30 So we can just see how it goes in a performance application.
31:33 Here though, not a huge, huge fan of it.
31:37 So as we slow down, it can be a little bit fussy at low speeds.
31:42 So it kind of lurches forward and it's not overly responsive until you get stuck into
31:48 it and then it kind of just gives you everything.
31:50 And then on hills as well, it can be a little bit funny too.
31:53 So look, it is a big improvement, but I think there's probably still a tiny bit of work
31:58 to be done to it.
31:59 When you do opt for the diesel in the GT line, it's an all-wheel drive system and there's
32:02 actually a clever display ahead of the driver that shows you how much torque is going to
32:07 the front and rear axle.
32:08 So if I bury this, you'll see it splits that a little more evenly.
32:11 And that's especially handy if you are going off-road and I say that because you're not
32:15 going to be doing any major off-roading, but it is good to know you have that display.
32:18 If you do opt for the petrol V6, yes, it is a punchier engine, but it is front-wheel
32:22 drive only.
32:23 We don't have an official 0-100 number from Kia, but I thought we'd test it out anyway.
32:28 So I'm going to pop that into sport mode and let's see what happens.
32:31 Yeah, look, it feels pretty punchy.
32:45 The engine itself has never been an issue and now the gearbox is actually really quite
32:51 responsive.
32:51 It doesn't have any torque holes and if I slow it down a little bit here and then just
32:55 give it a little kick, yeah, it's really fast to respond.
32:59 I like the way this works once it's moving.
33:01 Not so great at low speeds, but once it's moving, it's pretty impressive.
33:05 So speaking of drive modes, there's this little switch here and it's quite interesting because
33:09 it goes between smart, which is what we're in now, sport, eco and comfort.
33:13 But then if you want to go to your four-wheel drive controls, you simply push it and then
33:16 it allows you to select between snow, mud and sand.
33:19 And it's in those modes that it's able to activate the hill descent control and also
33:23 adjust the variability of the stability control to give you greater comfort and traction in
33:28 those environments.
33:29 So I like the way that's set up.
33:30 It's all very easy and straightforward.
33:32 Let's talk fuel economy.
33:33 Kia claims an official combined fuel consumption of 6.1 litres per 100km.
33:38 So over the last 100km, we've been averaging 10 litres per 100km, so that is significantly
33:45 more than the claim.
33:46 And we've been doing a fair bit of highway driving as well, so it's interesting to see
33:49 the figure is actually that high.
33:51 Let's talk about the ride.
33:52 Kia does all of its ride and handling tuning for its cars here in Australia.
33:57 So this car has a bespoke tune for Australia that is developed for the Australian market.
34:02 A lot of people ask, why are our roads any different?
34:04 Are they bad?
34:05 Are they worse than other roads around the world?
34:07 Well, no, they're not.
34:08 But the problem is we have a greater variability of roads.
34:11 So you need to be able to tune this car for gravel, for bad country roads, for smooth
34:15 city roads, and also for roads with built-up gravel on the side.
34:18 So it is quite a complex requirement for a car to be able to cross all of those measures.
34:23 And we kind of have a unique environment, and for that reason, they do all of their
34:27 tuning here for these cars.
34:29 What does it feel like?
34:30 Well, it's really interesting because the car has what I would describe as a European
34:36 feel.
34:36 Now that sounds a little bit cheesy, but it feels as good as the European competitors
34:41 in this segment because the ride quality is fantastic.
34:44 Regardless of which surface you pick.
34:46 So here we are in a pretty poor country road, and as we cruise over some of these bumps,
34:51 it's soaking everything up nicely.
34:52 The damping is nice and progressive, and the spring rate is on the firmer side of comfortable,
34:58 but it doesn't leave you jarred or feeling like this is too sporty.
35:02 The only time it does struggle a little bit is on cobblestones and low-speed stuff around
35:07 the city where it can feel a little bit brittle, and you are picking up a whole lot of those
35:11 imperfections.
35:12 In terms of towing capacity, if you do want to do any towing here, 2000kg braked towing
35:16 capacity with a 200kg down ball weight.
35:20 And in terms of noise, it is quiet in the cabin, but we are picking up a little bit
35:24 of wind noise, and the diesel engine can be a little thrashy at the top end of the rev
35:28 band.
35:28 On the outside, it is a little bit noisy too.
35:31 Now let's talk visibility, and watch this.
35:33 As I put the indicator on, check that out.
35:35 So that is part of the blind spot monitor.
35:39 The second you put the indicator on, you get a camera pop-up.
35:41 It works on the left-hand side as well.
35:43 I love this technology because I haven't seen that before on any other car in the Australian
35:49 market, and it works really well.
35:50 It's a super high-resolution screen, and then if I go to indicate and merge into someone
35:54 while there's someone there, it vibrates the steering wheel as well.
35:57 So this has you covered regardless of what you're doing, and it's great to see them
36:01 integrate that.
36:01 And on the visibility front, I can see clearly out the front there.
36:04 At the back, it's not too bad.
36:06 It's quite a narrow envelope, but the wing mirrors are really big on the sides, and of
36:10 course, I've got front and rear parking sensors, so parking is fairly straightforward.
36:14 So it's driving done and dusted.
36:15 So these cars both share the same engine, but you'll notice there in the video that
36:19 the Hyundai was slightly quicker from 0 to 100, and it definitely feels that way behind
36:23 the wheel.
36:23 It feels sharper, and the ride is slightly sportier, but I think I prefer it that way.
36:28 It really just has an overall resolved feel behind the wheel, and I think that's where
36:31 the Santa Fe wins out in terms of driving.
36:34 Yes, the Sereno is still fantastic, but if you compare the two side by side, I think
36:37 the Santa Fe just sits slightly higher and gives you a better performance behind the
36:41 wheel.
36:42 Now, what about the overall verdict?
36:44 So if you add our sections together and we come up with a winner, I guess with the benefit
36:48 of hindsight, it probably would have been better to pick two other cars to do a comparison
36:51 with, given these are the same in a few of those sections.
36:54 The Santa Fe actually comes out marginally on top, but there is a variable here in the
36:59 comparison, and this is where you guys can build your own comparison effectively.
37:02 I want you to go and have a look at the price of these cars in your market, and also the
37:06 warranty.
37:07 If we look specifically at Australia, the Sereno comes with an extra two years of warranty,
37:11 and it's also about $3,000 cheaper once you add all the costs together.
37:15 So for that reason, the Sereno wins our comparison.
37:18 In your market though, it may be a little bit different, and I am keen to see which
37:22 one is actually cheaper and which one has the longer warranty in your market.
37:26 Now, like I said at the start, this is a new format we're trialling, and I'm really keen
37:29 to get your feedback.
