00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 So, look, I know it's a bit hard to see,
00:03 but this car here is the new Hyundai Kona.
00:06 This one here is the N-line as well.
00:08 So it's not the full fat N version because that is dead.
00:11 They've announced they won't be doing another Kona N,
00:14 which is a bit disappointing,
00:15 but this is the entry level to the N-line.
00:18 This one here is powered by the mid-spec
00:20 of the N-line engines.
00:21 It is a 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol all-wheel drive.
00:25 It's priced at $40,000,
00:28 but if that's too expensive, the entire range kicks off
00:31 from just over $30,000.
00:33 This competes with things like the Toyota C-HR,
00:35 the Kia Seltos, Renault Captur.
00:38 There are a stack of competitors in this segment.
00:41 Today, we're gonna do a detailed review of this car.
00:43 So if you do wanna skip ahead to other parts of this review,
00:46 you can use the time codes that are on the screen,
00:48 or if you're on YouTube,
00:48 you can scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:51 And if you haven't done so already,
00:52 subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon.
00:54 That way you'll find out every single time
00:55 we test a tennis ball.
00:57 (air whooshing)
00:59 Now let's talk design.
01:00 So you've got a number of colours to choose from,
01:02 but only some of them are available here for the N-line.
01:06 Your solid colours are free,
01:07 optional colours are around $600.
01:10 What do you think of this colour?
01:12 I've mentioned before that it looks like a tennis ball.
01:14 If you put a tennis ball right next to it,
01:15 they're kind of the exact same colour.
01:17 It is very out there.
01:18 And in fact, there are a couple of colours
01:20 within the new Kona range that are out there,
01:22 and they kind of suit the design
01:24 because the design is out there.
01:26 Have a look at this.
01:27 You've got this LED strip along the front there
01:30 that looks similar to the Staria.
01:32 And again, similar to Staria,
01:34 they've mounted the headlights down low here as well.
01:37 This is an LED headlight setup.
01:39 Behind here, you've got these retractable flaps as well
01:41 for cooling, which help with efficiency.
01:43 This is going to be a similar design
01:45 to the full electric version of the Kona
01:47 when that is released in Australia.
01:48 There's also a hybrid version of this coming too.
01:51 So it is a bit full on in terms of design,
01:53 but I don't know, what do you reckon?
01:54 Do you like the look of it?
01:55 Let me know in the comment section below.
01:57 We'll whip around to the side here.
01:59 So the N-Line gets slightly bigger wheels.
02:02 This is sitting on 19s,
02:04 so you have a machined finish on the outside there
02:06 and a graphite finish on the inside.
02:08 Looks really nice,
02:09 but probably a little bit difficult to clean,
02:11 given how many sort of divots and stuff you have in there.
02:14 And slightly lower profile tyre there.
02:16 It's on 45 profile.
02:18 Now this bit here is interesting.
02:20 So if you don't go for the N-Line,
02:21 this is like a dark colour.
02:23 It's similar to what Toyota's done
02:24 with their new electric car.
02:26 But here on the N-Line, it's actually body coloured.
02:28 And I think the body colour design
02:29 actually doesn't look too bad.
02:31 N-Line badge just up there.
02:33 Over here, you've got an indicator built into the wing mirror
02:35 with piano black along the top there.
02:37 This doesn't have that 360 camera system,
02:39 so you won't find a camera under there.
02:41 That is reserved for the premium version of the N-Line.
02:44 Roof rails, no privacy glass
02:46 unless you step up to the top there.
02:48 Come around to the back, have a look at this.
02:49 Have a look at this rear.
02:50 So another LED strip along the back there,
02:53 but have a look at this.
02:54 This looks very similar to the RS3,
02:57 almost like an identical design, I think.
02:59 You've got a top-down brake light there,
03:01 shark fin aerial up the top there,
03:03 Kona along the back there, Hyundai logo.
03:05 I should mention as well,
03:06 I think this is a different Hyundai logo
03:08 to the other Hyundais I've seen.
03:09 Maybe I just haven't really noticed all that much recently,
03:11 but it's got that similar appearance to the new Kia logo
03:13 where it's quite flush and flat.
03:15 1.6T, which highlights the engine.
03:18 Have a look at these exhaust tips as well.
03:20 Very trendy there.
03:21 And then a diffuser down the bottom here as well.
03:24 So like I said,
03:25 let me know what you reckon about the design.
03:26 Is this a little too full on?
03:28 Would you go for a slightly more sedate color?
03:30 Let me know down there.
03:31 So we are inside the Kona
03:33 and we'll start off with the key.
03:35 Here it is.
03:36 So you've got lock, unlock, remote start,
03:39 and then blank down the bottom there.
03:41 You've got a button on the side there to open the boot
03:43 and then it's blank on the back.
03:44 This is a proximity sensing key.
03:46 So you can just grab the door handle.
03:47 You've got a push button start just over here.
03:49 Now, I did mention this in our review of the iNX 6 as well.
03:53 They just look like a sort of normal key,
03:54 but then when you turn it on the side,
03:56 you can actually see the Hyundai logo there,
03:57 which I think is kind of cool.
03:59 Now, what about this cabin?
04:02 Look, I think it's a big step forward from the old one.
04:05 I think it looks sort of, it presents really nice.
04:07 And I love the fact that here with the N line,
04:09 you also get these highlights as well.
04:11 It just really makes it pop nicely,
04:12 but it still has a little bit of an air of,
04:15 I don't know, just looks a bit dull to me.
04:17 I think there's just a bit too much darkness around here
04:20 and it would have been nice to see them split up
04:22 the colors a little bit.
04:23 There's also a lot of scratchy plastic around here as well.
04:26 So I don't know, I think they could have made us feel
04:29 a little bit more premium than it is, but yeah,
04:32 I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
04:34 I do like these two big screens ahead of the driver though.
04:36 So it's cool to see that they've gone to a bit of effort
04:37 with bringing technology as well into the whole package.
04:41 Now, what about your touch points?
04:43 So that is firm in the center there
04:46 and sort of firm on the door there as well.
04:48 How firm are they?
04:49 We've got our durometer.
04:51 We've tested the main surfaces in this cabin.
04:54 If you want to see how this car compares to others
04:55 that we've tested before,
04:56 look at the link in the description below.
04:58 Now, build quality.
05:00 What's it like?
05:01 Well, it's fairly wonky there in the center.
05:03 A little bit disappointing.
05:05 Not too bad outside of that.
05:06 Here's our door slam.
05:08 Now let's talk infotainment.
05:11 So you have two 12.3 inch displays.
05:14 You've got one over here and one over here as well.
05:16 The infotainment display is a touchscreen.
05:19 In the entry-level grade here, you don't get
05:21 inbuilt satellite navigation,
05:22 but you do get smartphone mirroring that is wireless.
05:25 So I'll show you what that looks like.
05:27 So you've got Apple CarPlay.
05:29 Look at that big screen and very high resolution.
05:33 Really like the look of that.
05:34 Very impressed with that.
05:35 And this is what Android Auto looks like.
05:38 So Android Auto is wireless as well.
05:40 Nice full screen integration there
05:42 and all very snappy as well.
05:45 On the audio front, you have AM/FM, DAB, digital radio,
05:49 and that's through a six speaker sound system.
05:51 Sound system is fine.
05:53 Nothing sort of too special.
05:54 Head of the driver, you also have a 12.3 inch display.
05:58 This one is pretty sort of straightforward,
06:00 nothing sort of too special,
06:01 and it just does exactly what you'd expect it to do.
06:05 And I'll show you what that all looks like
06:06 once we go for a drive.
06:07 Let's chat safety.
06:08 So you have autonomous emergency braking
06:10 with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
06:13 You've got a driver attention monitor just there,
06:15 auto dimming rear vision mirror.
06:17 You've also got a blind spot monitor
06:19 built into the wing mirror.
06:21 You have a radar cruise control
06:23 with a lane keeping assistant,
06:25 which we'll test a little bit later on.
06:27 You also have front and rear parking sensors
06:29 with a reverse view camera.
06:31 I'll show you what that looks like.
06:33 Here it is there.
06:33 Quality of that is excellent.
06:34 So you can clearly see what's on our suitcase there.
06:37 No dramas there at all.
06:38 So pretty impressed with that.
06:39 You then have a number of different views there,
06:41 like a towing view
06:43 and then a super wide angle view as well.
06:45 This is what the horn sounds like.
06:46 (horn honking)
06:47 Now let's chat practicality
06:49 and we'll start off with your connectivity.
06:51 You've actually got a really cool setup down here.
06:52 So you've got two USB-C ports,
06:55 but then you can actually change
06:57 what the left-hand port actually does,
07:00 which I reckon is,
07:01 I haven't seen that before.
07:02 It's really cool.
07:03 You then have a 12 volt outlet,
07:04 but it's hidden behind this little flap here.
07:06 So again, just a really cool, innovative way to do things.
07:09 While there's phone charger down here,
07:11 so you can pop your phone on there.
07:12 It'll begin charging.
07:14 Can also then store your phone
07:15 in a litany of other places here,
07:17 which is really good.
07:17 Now, coffee cup.
07:18 Look at this.
07:19 So you can work it down there,
07:20 but as you can see,
07:21 it kind of moves all over the place
07:22 and you're gonna be spilling your coffee everywhere,
07:25 but you then can deploy these two little suckers here
07:27 and then they hold your drink in position.
07:30 And in the instance of the coffee cup there,
07:31 it's not too bad.
07:32 You also have teeth on the side there
07:34 that help you hold things in position.
07:37 Bottle fits into there without any drums.
07:40 Although this thin bottle does sort of move around
07:42 a little bit there,
07:43 even with those teeth.
07:44 Little bottle fits in the door.
07:46 Let's try out big bottle as well.
07:48 Beauty.
07:49 Fits in the door without any dramas.
07:51 Terms of additional storage,
07:52 you have this sort of console lid here,
07:56 but it's not really much else there.
07:58 And it is a little bit disappointing
07:59 because you can see everything here.
08:01 There's nowhere to actually securely store things.
08:04 So they're not visible from the outside.
08:06 So I reckon they could have maybe had a cover for this
08:08 or done something just to conceal
08:10 some of your valuable items as well.
08:13 Glove box over here.
08:14 Reasonably sized.
08:15 Little slot here as well to store your bits and pieces.
08:18 Let's check comfort.
08:19 So you have dual zone automatic climate control.
08:23 You don't have any headed seats or headed steering wheel,
08:26 but the seats are pretty cool.
08:28 You've got a partial Alcantara finish.
08:30 The N logo's in Alcantara as well.
08:32 So I think it is a really cool looking setup,
08:34 but seats are manually adjustable
08:36 for both the driver and front passenger.
08:38 Steering wheel offers both tilt and reach adjustment.
08:42 And on our reach test, all of that stuff
08:44 is easy to reach while you're driving.
08:46 So second row, it is worth calling out.
08:49 The Kona is longer, wider, taller.
08:52 The wheel base is longer.
08:53 So it has grown enormously over the previous generation.
08:56 And you can kind of see that here with the leg room.
08:59 I've got really decent knee room there.
09:00 Toe room is great and headroom is really good as well.
09:03 So they are very much welcome improvements.
09:05 You've got map pockets here.
09:07 That red continues here with the air vents.
09:09 You also have two USB-C ports,
09:12 a center arm rest with two cup holders.
09:15 In addition to the cup holders,
09:16 you've got ISOFIX points for the two outboard seats
09:20 and top tether points as well.
09:23 And what about our window test?
09:25 So manual up and down.
09:27 Boom, goes all the way down.
09:28 Very impressive.
09:29 Now cargo space, it has grown.
09:33 Yay.
09:34 So you now have over 400 liters of cargo space.
09:37 Visibly, it actually looks bigger than the old one as well,
09:40 which is great news.
09:41 You get a spare tire under here.
09:43 I'll show you what it looks like with our bags in there.
09:45 So, a lappy bag in there.
09:47 Suitcase there.
09:50 And then you've got a couple of little storage slots
09:54 off to the side with an LED light there as well.
09:58 Hooks too, if you need them.
09:59 If you do want to expand the space though,
10:01 you can drop the second row.
10:03 Once you get that thing out of the way,
10:06 it expands the space to over 1200 liters,
10:09 which isn't actually too bad.
10:10 Okay, so we have just hit the road in the Kona.
10:18 And welcome to the most annoying feature known to man.
10:23 Hear that?
10:24 It's telling me I've gone over the speed limit,
10:26 which it has for some reason decided is 20 kilometers
10:29 an hour, even though it's not.
10:31 And the most annoying part about this is this feature
10:34 turns itself on every single time you start the car.
10:37 It's just constantly beeping at you and annoying you.
10:39 So, to turn it off, you have to go into the settings menu.
10:44 And then once you're in the settings menu,
10:46 you have to go over here to this screen
10:48 and then manually turn off the speed limit warning.
10:51 So, this is probably one of the most annoying features
10:54 in a Hyundai and a Kia today.
10:56 And that second thing you're hearing there
10:58 is the driver distraction warning.
11:00 For some reason, it's thinking I'm not concentrating
11:02 at the moment, it's just constantly flashing
11:04 and beeping at me.
11:04 So, I'm gonna turn off that as well
11:07 because that is also annoying.
11:08 So, now that all that stuff's switched off,
11:11 and I actually think safety features like that
11:13 are totally redundant if you're turning them off
11:15 every single time you start the car.
11:16 So, I think that urgently needs attention.
11:19 Now, what is powering the Kona?
11:21 So, this particular spec here,
11:24 it's a 1.6 liter turbocharged four cylinder petrol.
11:27 This is available in a two liter
11:29 naturally aspirated four cylinder.
11:30 And also there's a hybrid coming as well.
11:33 So, the good thing here with this particular engine
11:36 is they've ditched the dual clutch.
11:38 And thank goodness because really it wasn't
11:40 a very good dual clutch and they've gone down
11:41 the path of a torque converter.
11:42 When we drove the Seltos recently with this engine,
11:45 I was really impressed with how that felt
11:46 with the torque converter instead of the dual clutch.
11:49 So, this particular combo makes 146 kilowatts of power
11:52 and just over 250 newton meters of torque.
11:54 So, this is a groundbreaking amount,
11:56 but equally the car doesn't weigh that much.
11:58 It's not too far off, 1500 kilos.
12:01 Now, how does all that feel behind the wheel?
12:03 Let's sink the boot in here.
12:05 It's actually surprisingly pretty good.
12:08 It kind of just punches you back in the seat.
12:10 Everything happens nice and quickly there as well.
12:12 And then you have the assurance of the all wheel drive system.
12:15 In fact, you do have this little display here
12:17 that tells you where it's sending torque as well.
12:19 So, it appears to be always sending torque
12:22 to both the front and the rear axle,
12:23 which I think is pretty cool.
12:24 Now, Hyundai claims a fuel economy
12:26 of under eight liters per 100 Ks.
12:29 We are currently sitting on 8.8 liters per 100 Ks,
12:34 which I don't think is actually too bad.
12:38 Quite impressed with that.
12:40 Driving in and around town,
12:43 the ride is actually pretty good.
12:45 It's sort of fairly soft and sort of cushy.
12:48 And that's despite this being on fairly low profile tires
12:51 and 19 inch alloy wheels.
12:53 But the real question is going to be
12:55 without any local ride and handling tuning,
12:58 what's it like on our sine waves?
12:59 So, we'll increase the speed here to 130,
13:02 which is the maximum speed in Australia.
13:04 Keeping in mind that Kia has done a really good job
13:07 with tuning of its cars for Australian conditions.
13:10 I'm keen to see what this is like with Hyundai's tune on it.
13:13 So, there's 130, here are our sine waves.
13:17 Wow, that is really not good.
13:20 It has a lot, just a total lack of body control
13:24 at that top end, it is really floaty up there.
13:27 And I think it just shows that it really hasn't got
13:31 that right tune for the Australian market.
13:34 And to put something like that into context,
13:37 I did a drive not that long ago
13:39 between Adelaide and Melbourne.
13:40 And even during sections of overtaking,
13:43 even at 110 Ks an hour,
13:45 where the road is even choppier than that,
13:47 and this is a major road,
13:49 the car that I was in was all over the place.
13:51 And just imagine if you've got the family on board and stuff,
13:54 it really is quite an unsettling feeling.
13:56 So, I think that Hyundai really needs to go back
13:59 into investing on a local ride and handling tune
14:02 because while the car is going to be fine
14:04 for driving in and around the city,
14:06 really does lack that refinement when the speed picks up.
14:08 Okay, on to our choppy road.
14:11 So, this is a corrugated, terrible stretch of road.
14:15 We'll do this one at 90 Ks an hour,
14:17 so, see what it's like.
14:18 So, it's actually really comfortable.
14:20 So, the trade-off there, while this doesn't feel
14:22 like it handles all that well,
14:24 and it really doesn't have the body control
14:26 and the sine waves, it soaks up these bumps nicely
14:28 because of how soft the ride is.
14:30 So, look, I mean, that's not the end of the world.
14:32 If you're buying this because you want it for its looks,
14:35 that's fine.
14:36 Just don't go into it expecting it to be a super sporty car.
14:39 It does feel like it's designed to be driven more
14:41 in and around the city.
14:42 Now, drive modes.
14:46 We've got Sport, Eco, Normal.
14:48 Let's pop it into Sport and go for a bang around our track
14:52 and see what it feels like.
14:54 A little bit of body roll there because of that softness,
15:03 but, yeah, it's interesting.
15:05 You can kind of feel it leaning over.
15:08 But this engine is great.
15:10 It's really picking up pace nicely.
15:15 Yeah, so that softness that they've engineered into it
15:19 is affecting the way that it feels around here
15:21 when the speed picks up because it has a lot of lean on it,
15:24 and I'm feeling a lot of kickback here
15:26 through the steering as well as it tries to navigate itself
15:31 when it's getting thrown around a bit.
15:34 Yeah, it's interesting.
15:39 It really doesn't feel as engaging
15:42 as the last Kona to drive, and certainly the Kona N.
15:44 I mean, that thing was unreal when we had it around here.
15:47 This just feels like it's been dialled back a lot
15:50 in comparison to that.
15:51 So, yeah, I mean, it's got the N-line badge,
15:54 but it really doesn't feel like a proper N product
15:57 like the old one used to.
15:59 Now, on road noise, even though this is on the sportier tyre,
16:04 when we tested it with our calibrated sound meter,
16:08 it actually didn't come up too badly.
16:10 So on the noise front, it's actually not terrible.
16:12 Now, let's check visibility.
16:13 So I can see clearly down the front of the car there.
16:16 It helps that it's very brightly coloured as well.
16:18 Wing mirrors are a really decent size too,
16:20 with a blind spot monitor built into them.
16:22 Visibility at the back isn't too bad either.
16:25 It is a narrow envelope, but it's fine.
16:27 Okay, so time to test our semi-autonomous systems.
16:33 We do this at 70 k's an hour.
16:36 So I will set cruise control.
16:38 It's basically designed to give us an idea
16:41 of how well the vehicle is willing to stay within its lane
16:45 when it's all active.
16:46 So we're gonna use the three outer lanes here,
16:48 and the whole concept is that the further we go out,
16:50 the more torque it needs to apply to the steering wheel
16:53 to keep it in position.
16:55 So we're in lane one now.
16:56 Steering wheel is green.
16:58 Lanes are green as well.
16:59 It's kind of holding fine there.
17:01 Jump over to the next lane over.
17:03 Okay, so it is...
17:10 Not too bad.
17:11 Oh no, that's not good at all.
17:13 That's just gone straight through that.
17:15 Okay.
17:16 Not very good.
17:17 I'm quite surprised by that.
17:18 I would have thought that it would be at least willing
17:19 to hold those lanes properly,
17:21 but it doesn't seem to be very keen to do that at all.
17:24 So yeah, I think that system
17:26 probably needs a little bit of work.
17:28 Okay, time to do some performance testing.
17:29 Before we get into it though, help me car expert,
17:33 Google it, and we will connect you
17:36 with some vetted car dealers
17:38 who will help you get the best deal on a new car today,
17:40 including some of the cars that are in stock like this one.
17:42 So just go to Google, type in help me car expert,
17:45 and that page will explain everything for you.
17:48 Okay, so we don't have an official zero to 100 time,
17:51 but I've got it in sport mode.
17:53 We'll dial up some revs.
17:55 We'll go all the way through to 120 and see how it goes.
17:58 So here we go.
17:59 Okay.
18:02 A little bark out of the exhaust.
18:06 Nice.
18:07 Okay, there's 100.
18:09 And 120.
18:13 All right, we'll come to a stop.
18:15 Let's have a look at how we went.
18:17 Zero to 100, 7.98 seconds.
18:20 That's not too bad.
18:21 80 to 120, 5.32 seconds.
18:24 That's not too bad either.
18:25 Quite impressed with that.
18:26 Alrighty, let's go back and do a break from 100 Ks an hour.
18:31 Let's see how quickly this stops.
18:33 Okay, we'll dial up 100 Ks an hour.
18:37 Slam the anchors down.
18:39 All right, there it is there.
18:41 Oh, it feels really good.
18:45 You can see what that time is.
18:47 That felt really, really impressive.
18:48 100 to zero.
18:50 Wow, 3.18 seconds and 35.85 meters.
18:55 It's bloody impressive.
18:58 It's almost one of the quickest cars we've tested.
19:01 There you go.
19:02 Good job, Hyundai.
19:03 Oh, by the way, if you want to see more about this,
19:05 app that we're using for performance testing,
19:07 I've left a link in the description below.
19:10 Now, how quickly does it go in reverse?
19:14 Here we go.
19:15 77 Ks an hour.
19:26 That is not a bad effort.
19:28 (laughs)
19:30 So the new Hyundai Kona, what do we reckon?
19:37 Look, I think in terms of size and offering,
19:40 it is a big step forward in terms of dimensions.
19:42 I thought the old one was really too pokey.
19:44 This is a huge step forward in terms of
19:46 how much boot room you have, rear leg room,
19:48 and the tech is significantly better as well.
19:51 But it is really let down by its ride and handling.
19:54 And look, if you're driving it in and around the city,
19:56 it's going to be perfectly fine.
19:57 And just for your standard highway driving,
19:59 it's perfectly fine.
20:00 But have a look at it.
20:01 It looks super sporty,
20:02 and it just doesn't drive as sporty as it looks,
20:04 which I think is pretty disappointing.
20:06 And I really do hope that Hyundai goes back to investing
20:09 in local ride and handling tuning,
20:10 because I think that is what this desperately lacks.
20:13 It has all the ingredients to be really good fun to drive,
20:15 but just feels a little bit sloppy
20:17 when it's pushed towards its limits.
20:18 It's also pretty disappointing
20:19 there isn't a full-fat Kona N version coming as well.
20:23 But anyway, let me know in the comments section below,
20:25 what do you think?
20:26 Have you had a drive of it?
20:27 Are you enjoying the new Kona?
20:29 I'm keen for your feedback.
