We just got our hands on a 2023 Honda Pioneer 1000-6 and we’re already stoked on it! It’s a better machine in almost every respect than the Honda Pioneer 1000-5 we had last year. Here’s why!

00:00 Hey guys, Aaron Richardson here with UTVdriver and we're back with another Honda Pioneer.
00:05 This time it's the 2023 Honda Pioneer 1006.
00:10 Now last time we had the 1005 Trail Edition, which was a four-seater that had kind of these
00:17 compromised rear seats in the back.
00:19 Well for 2023, Honda has rethought some things and come out with this.
00:24 It's a full four-door, full cab Honda Pioneer and this time the rear seats have enough room
00:33 for a grown adult.
00:35 Stay tuned, let's check it out.
00:44 All right, so what's great about the 2023 Honda Pioneer 1006, as I said, is that it
00:50 has proper four doors and a proper full interior.
00:53 So before, if you remember the Pioneer 1005, the bed was covered by the roof and the seats
00:59 sort of folded out of the bed.
01:01 They've done away with that for this year and now you can still get a 1005, but on the
01:05 1006, the cab covers the interior like you'd want it and then there's a proper full-size
01:12 UTV bed back here.
01:14 We'll get to that bed in a second.
01:15 Let's take a look at the interior.
01:17 Now up front, it's the same standard fare you would get on any other Honda Pioneer.
01:23 You've got the net storage and the same dashboard as you had before, but out back is where it
01:31 gets really interesting.
01:33 So as you saw me in a minute ago, I got in and sat down and again, full-sized American
01:38 adult, this time fits really nicely.
01:42 And what's even cooler than that is in front of my feet, the entire space taken up by the
01:48 front bench seat, there is storage for so much stuff.
01:52 Now again, if you'll remember from our 1005 video, one of the complaints we had was that
01:57 when you've got a full crew of passengers, there's really not that much storage room
02:02 in the cab of the rig and here that's taken care of.
02:05 Now there's room for three people across without really touching each other.
02:11 It wouldn't be the most comfortable thing in the world, but you could sit back here
02:14 all day with two passengers, maybe not on a trail ride, but certainly when you were
02:19 doing some work.
02:20 There's a nice generous grab bar, there's seat belts for everybody and the cabin is
02:24 nice and airy.
02:26 It's a real step up from what the last one was.
02:28 Now coming to the back, the bed is in the hydraulic assisted dump bed, which is really
02:35 sweet.
02:36 It's operated by a little lever in here.
02:38 Now one little niggle is that you can't operate the rear bed without opening the rear doors.
02:47 Not a huge deal, but why couldn't you put a lever on the outside of the door?
02:51 A lot of other people have figured it out.
02:54 But that small concern aside, again, this is hydraulically assisted, which is really
03:00 nice.
03:02 It's easy to move up and move down.
03:04 There's this cool step here, so if you've got a heavy load, you've got a little bit
03:07 more leverage.
03:08 And, like I said, it's got a full proper sized bed, the same as a Can-Am Defender or
03:14 a Polaris Ranger, which is really generous.
03:18 There are still some, again, some other small things.
03:21 Honda still insists on this double latch for the tailgate, which I still can't make sense
03:27 of and I wish it was just a central latch.
03:31 I know with Big Red's engineering might, they're fully capable of making a traditional
03:35 tailgate handle, but that aside, everything out here looks pretty good.
03:41 You still don't get any safety chain mounts on your trailer hitch, which is, again, really
03:46 more than an oversight and something that should be rectified.
03:49 We wish they had fixed it, but they haven't.
03:51 Up front, more of the same.
03:53 It's just like the Honda 1000, or Pioneer 1005.
03:57 You get the same great dashboard.
03:59 You get the same fantastic levers for transmission.
04:03 The transfer case, you get turf mode.
04:07 You still have the same very basic LED functions on the, or LCD, excuse me, functions on the
04:12 dashboard.
04:13 There's still plenty of storage.
04:15 One nice thing that's different between this and the Pioneer 1005 is that the front seat
04:21 is no longer sitting directly on top of the engine, so you're not going to get cooked
04:25 on a hot summer trail ride, which is a really nice feature.
04:31 It's still powered by the 1000cc parallel twin that comes out of the Africa twin, and
04:36 you still get the dual clutch transmission, so it's still very much a Honda in that respect.
04:41 That comes with good and bad.
04:44 The other thing that Honda does that's a little bit different from other manufacturers is
04:48 that they do include a GPS navigation unit, but instead of putting it in the dashboard
04:55 as an integrated part of the rig, it comes separate and it's Garmin branded.
05:01 The good thing about that is that you can take it off if you don't need it on the
05:05 bop around the farm.
05:07 The bad thing about that is it's a little bit cumbersome to use and kind of can be in
05:11 the way.
05:13 I think in an ideal world, there'd be an option for like an LCD screen like a lot of
05:17 other manufacturers do, but we'll wait to pass judgment until we've put this thing further
05:23 through its paces.
05:24 Which is coming up on UTVDriver.com and here on YouTube.
05:28 We are at our hobby farm in Virginia.
05:31 We're going to put this thing through its paces here.
05:34 We're going to do some trail building and a couple other things.
05:36 You'll see it here on YouTube.
05:37 You'll see it on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, anywhere else you can find us, and every day
05:41 of the week at UTVDriver.com.
