00:00 Welcome to Sunday Morning Quarterback with Jay Stockwell and Bob Frady.
00:06 We're mixing it up this week, Stockwell.
00:08 We're mixing it up.
00:09 You ready?
00:10 Okay, what are we doing?
00:11 What are we doing?
00:12 Go Big Red!
00:13 Go Big Red!
00:14 We're going to turn this thing around.
00:15 That's right, we're just turning it around.
00:20 What we did at the end, we're doing at the beginning.
00:23 So here's the other thing that we're doing.
00:26 And we're in the black, giving all the love to the black shirts, but today we're in red.
00:31 Today we're for the offense.
00:33 Today we're talking offense.
00:35 You didn't pass that mellow before the event, or I'd have done the same thing.
00:39 So I'll stay with the defense.
00:40 That's all right.
00:41 We're going to need it.
00:42 We've got to stay balanced.
00:43 We're going to need some defense this weekend.
00:45 The stats are very, very telling, Bob Frady.
00:48 They like to sling the pill, no doubt about that.
00:50 I want to do some mascot study before we get going here too far.
00:54 What exactly is a terrapin?
00:55 It's a turtle.
00:56 It's a slow moving turtle.
00:58 Terrapins are one of several species of small turtle order testunines living in fresh or
01:05 brackish water.
01:07 Terrapins do not form a toxinomic unit and may not be closely related.
01:13 Did you stumble on Smartipedia or something like that?
01:16 That's like Wikipedia for brainiacs who understand scientific terms?
01:21 They're freaking little turtles, okay?
01:23 That's it.
01:24 They might form a family group, they might not.
01:26 And the two single lemma summa, da da summa.
01:31 Well, since you put it that way, it gives me a much better understanding of what this
01:35 freaking thing is.
01:37 I'm going to try to say it one more time.
01:39 Many belong to the families Geoemidae and Emidae.
01:47 So there you go.
01:48 Are you having a stroke?
01:49 Because it sounds like you're having a stroke when you say that.
01:52 That's what it says.
01:53 I'm looking at it right here.
01:54 It's like a little turtle.
01:58 This is a subset of Wikipedia.
02:01 So okay, we're playing the turtles this week.
02:04 Smartipedia.
02:05 Yeah.
02:06 Much like the tortoise and the hare.
02:07 You got to be careful of that little tortoise.
02:09 But it's not a tortoise, it's a turtle, so it's different.
02:11 Okay.
02:12 So I was very encouraged by some of the things I heard from the coaching staff this week.
02:17 Oh, good.
02:18 Let's hear it.
02:19 Listen, there's a lot of heat coming down on the kids for all this and that stuff.
02:22 And the coaches, like good coaches do, stepped up and said, "Hey, listen, we got to be a
02:27 little bit better in our play calling.
02:29 We got to do some things better from a coaching standpoint to put the kids in position to
02:33 win."
02:34 That's always good to hear.
02:36 It's like you got to ... Because I think what's going on with Harburg is when he was first
02:41 played, he was like, "Oh my gosh, I'm out here.
02:42 Let's play."
02:44 And now it's like, now I think about everything and process and pick the right play.
02:48 Somehow you got to get back to that.
02:49 He was overthinking.
02:50 Just play.
02:51 And if he was overthinking and it was obvious, you could just call the play in that 20 minute
02:56 direction.
02:57 Yeah.
02:58 And you don't necessarily want to admit that you're overthinking because maybe that means
03:01 you can't think that much or maybe it means you think too much.
03:05 And I don't know which one is the right answer.
03:07 I would say it's very-
03:08 Hold on.
03:09 Let's think about that.
03:10 Yeah.
03:11 Let's not overthink this, Stockwell.
03:16 We might just get sacked while we're thinking about it.
03:19 Hmm.
03:20 Let's ponder.
03:21 We just got hit by a two-order founder.
03:23 So well, look, let's review the stats.
03:26 I read this guy, Husker Dan on Husker Max, and he's got an interesting way of looking
03:32 things.
03:33 He kind of compares across multiple dimensions, offense and defense.
03:36 So here they are scoring, Maryland 47 and you 117.
03:42 Rushing Maryland 110, Nebraska 33.
03:46 Passing Maryland 27.
03:47 This is the concerning part, Nebraska 129.
03:51 Total Maryland 58, and you 121.
03:56 That sounds like a basketball score.
03:58 I think they rank 130 FBS schools and we are an order of magnitude worse than them on offense,
04:05 but we knew that, right?
04:06 Yep.
04:07 It's kind of the opposite on defense.
04:09 Scoring, Maryland's 53, we're 22.
04:12 This is defense now.
04:13 Rushing, 28, we're number four.
04:16 Passing, their 74, we're 52, and total defense, their 44, we're 16.
04:24 So what that says to me is, "Boy, oh boy, Tony White's got to be ready for the pass."
04:30 I was a little concerned because we got kind of dashed by the pass last week.
04:37 So it leads me to be very, very concerned about this weekend.
04:41 Yet it is another opportunity.
04:43 Now remember, I called seven and five, you called eight and four.
04:48 You have to win out to get to eight and four.
04:50 I still have the flexibility of one loss to get to seven and five.
04:53 It's not a contest, Stockwell.
04:55 It's not a contest.
04:56 No.
04:57 Well, it's just that I'm just-
04:58 There's no pushups at the end of this, unlike last week.
05:02 I think it's a very, very unique setup.
05:04 Their quarterback is good.
05:06 Is this Tua Tuglaevola's little brother?
05:10 Is that exactly what you're saying?
05:11 I'm not sure how you pronounce.
05:12 I think that you garbled that.
05:14 This is like the turtle pronunciation that you started.
05:16 You need to go back to Smartopedia and figure out how to pronounce that properly because
05:21 I certainly don't know how to pronounce it.
05:23 Here's the thing about Maryland.
05:26 They beat Indiana handily.
05:28 They beat Michigan State and then they get pounded by Ohio State.
05:34 Then they lose to Illinois Northwestern and then get pounded by Penn State again.
05:38 So something's up with those guys.
05:39 I don't know whether they're injured.
05:41 I don't know whether people have figured out the play calling and the coaching staff hasn't
05:44 adapted.
05:45 But I'm not as worried about Maryland maybe as some people are.
05:48 It's like, yeah, they can throw the pill, but it's a home game, number one.
05:52 Number two, the weather's going to be nice.
05:54 Number three, I think that Prince comes back this week, so we'll have some purple rain
06:00 falling down on them if the weather does get inclement.
06:03 So I'm not worried about that.
06:04 Something's up with Maryland and we can exploit it.
06:07 Here's a reason to be concerned.
06:08 His name is Tullia Tagovaiola and he is the brother of Tua Tagovaiola.
06:15 There you go.
06:16 I think I'm saying that correctly, of the Miami Dolphins.
06:20 So he comes from very, very good bloodlines and his older brother's been just tearing
06:27 it up.
06:28 And apparently he's been tearing it up.
06:30 I think that, just listen, we both have brothers and we can say a lot about the bloodline of
06:37 each of our brothers.
06:41 Just because you and I are part of the fifth most popular podcast for Nebraska football
06:46 doesn't mean our brothers could do it.
06:48 It's true.
06:49 Just leave it at that.
06:54 So I'm a little concerned, to be honest, about this weekend.
06:58 Now if the guys come in and play inspired defense and return to our ability to sack
07:03 the quarterback and put pressure on him, that's the upside outlook.
07:07 Like our defense comes in, our offense has not proven to be ... So to win, we need our
07:15 offense to get a couple of touchdowns and maybe a field goal or two, and then we've
07:20 got to hold them to two touchdowns.
07:24 I think that Maryland will score three touchdowns.
07:27 What's the over-under, Bob?
07:28 42 and a half.
07:29 The Maryland's a three-point favorite and it's between 42 and 44 and a half, depending
07:34 upon the book that you're using.
07:37 I like the 44 and a half.
07:39 I'm thinking it's going over, because you know what?
07:41 We're wearing the colors of the offense this week, and I think that the defense will hold
07:47 them enough, force a turnover or two, and the big red shall emerge victorious by a score
07:54 of 27 to 24.
07:56 Now can we petition the replay booth right now to get it right?
08:03 Basically look at the replay and when we cross the goal line or the enemy drops a ball in
08:11 the end zone ... I'm not talking about the officials.
08:14 Officials make mistakes and that happens.
08:16 But the replay booth, especially with Dean Blandino calling in from LA, ought to be able
08:21 to get it right.
08:22 We're seven and two.
08:24 Right now we're seven and two if the replay officials call it correctly.
08:27 I have a theory about that.
08:30 I think that the replay booth is just too busy and they're understaffed.
08:36 They need a couple more replay analysts up there.
08:38 And when you hire people, maybe they're not as experienced as the real ... I think it
08:42 started out as a really good idea.
08:45 We'll review one play per game, and now it's like they're reviewing 30 plays per game and
08:50 they're just overwhelmed in volume.
08:52 So they move too fast.
08:53 They're not like us at home.
08:55 We sit there and dawdle over it back and forth and back and forth.
08:57 They got like 30 games doing this stuff.
09:00 So my theory is that replay is just too busy and they can't get things as right as they
09:07 should be able to get, which is a fault of the system.
09:10 They need to improve the infrastructure of the system.
09:12 They should designate one person every game that gets to see the obvious looks that we
09:19 get to see.
09:21 Because at Minnesota, it was obvious that it was a touchdown.
09:25 Here it was obvious that the guy dropped the ball and didn't catch it.
09:28 I would say it was borderline, but it was ... Yeah, if you get a call that dropped at
09:34 the other end, yeah, it's like you got to be consistent with your calls.
09:39 But then the biggest plays are the ones that aren't called.
09:42 They get 11 yards on first down and they only give them nine.
09:45 They spot the ball improperly.
09:47 And so the clock doesn't stop, so you don't have time to review it.
09:49 The second, there's a car crash in the secondary where defense interferes with Coleman.
09:57 It's like they missed that.
09:59 It's like sometimes they just missed the call.
10:01 And so it's not just the replay officials, it's the officials in general.
10:04 The Coleman officiating miss has nothing to do with the replay.
10:08 It's not a reviewable play.
10:09 But the replay guys should get it right.
10:11 Now Matt Ruhle said, "I've been a head coach for five years and I've never lost a game
10:15 on a replay.
10:16 This year I've lost two."
10:17 Yeah.
10:18 It's funny that I Googled Nebraska, Michigan State, bad officiating, and it gave me like
10:25 every game for the last 15 years that they played.
10:30 Someone's always complaining.
10:32 So let's hope they get it right.
10:35 But I remain optimistic.
10:39 Optimistic as the sunshine, Jay Stockwell.
10:41 I'm optimistic.
10:43 Big Red will emerge victorious.
10:44 Okay.
10:45 So I'm going to be a little more conservative.
10:47 I think it's two touchdowns and two field goals.
10:50 I think Tristan Albaha's going to have two field goals.
10:53 So we're going to have 20 points.
10:55 But Maryland's going to have 14 and maybe a field goal.
11:00 So I'm going to call it 20 to 17.
11:03 All right.
11:04 Under.
11:05 So you're going to be under.
11:06 Under.
11:07 God bless you, Jay Stockwell.
11:08 You go.
11:09 And just count on the hold field advantage and the crowd, the 12th man of the crowd
11:15 to play a big factor in this game.
11:18 I think getting their butts handed to them last week will hopefully be a wake-up call.
11:22 Sometimes when you win a bunch of games in a row, you think the next game's going to
11:24 be easy and maybe you don't prepare quite as hard.
11:28 Just human nature until you get used to winning a lot of games in a row.
11:32 And hopefully there's a good wake-up call for them and allow them to.
11:36 Give credit to where it's due.
11:37 I mean, the Michigan State coaches had a good game plan.
11:39 They were tricky.
11:40 They were clearly well prepared.
11:43 They threw the kitchen sink at Nebraska and Nebraska still had a chance to win the game
11:47 at the end.
11:48 They just didn't execute.
11:49 So it wasn't as if this was a blowout.
11:52 It was just, it is what it is.
11:54 And you know what?
11:55 Sometimes you have games like this where you just miss a play or two and you end up on
12:00 the wrong side of this.
12:02 But I'm optimistic.
12:03 We're the red.
12:04 It's time to be optimistic, Jay Stockwell.
12:07 What time's the game?
12:08 Saturday.
12:09 Rational and optimistic.
12:10 I think he said 11 o'clock.
12:11 11 AM.
12:12 And which network is it on?
12:13 It's on Peacock.
12:14 Oh, that's right.
12:15 Peacock.
12:16 Peacock.
12:17 This is one of those games we have to sign up for Peacock in order to see the game.
12:19 It's like it's a paid service.
12:21 So-
12:22 I think I have it already.
12:23 I have it already.
12:24 So we're good.
12:25 Okay, good.
12:26 So we're good.
12:27 But it's like, for those of you who don't want to do it, sign up for the Peacock trial
12:29 and then cancel it at the end.
12:31 It's like, you know, this is what, again, this is what happens when you bow down to
12:36 money.
12:37 You get nonsense like this all the time.
12:38 You're going to move more and more of these games to paid channels.
12:41 And what are you going to do?
12:43 What are you going to do?
12:44 You know, you want the NIL, you want the big salaries, this is what you get.
12:47 So your prediction is 20 to 17.
12:50 20 to 17 in a victory.
12:52 One thing about the Peacock network that has been changed this day, this week, is someone
13:00 came back from her Europe girls trip and had been watching Yellowstone on the plane.
13:06 And now all of a sudden is obsessed with Yellowstone.
13:11 The Yellowstone weirdly moved from Peacock, I think Peacock.
13:16 HBO to Peacock.
13:18 No, no, no, no.
13:20 To regular CBS TV.
13:22 In doing so, they picked up like 3.5 million incremental users.
13:26 But they had to make it, it wasn't R-rated show on the streaming service.
13:32 And so they had to make a bunch of changes to it to make it work.
13:35 But apparently it does because it's a popular show, even in the new version.
13:39 It was on Paramount to start, and then it was Peacock.
13:42 There you go.
13:43 And then, you know, it's like, whatever, whatever.
13:45 We'll figure it out.
13:47 The game will be out.
13:48 The game will be out.
13:49 The smart TVs are great now.
13:50 They've kind of figured it out for you.
13:52 They understand your watching patterns and they tell you where to go.
13:56 Yeah.
13:57 Great.
13:58 My TV is now driving my life.
13:59 Thank you very much, AI.
14:00 Just a matter of time until that TV becomes smart enough to leap off the wall and smash
14:05 me over the head for watching stupid shows like the real OC Housewives.
14:09 You're going to die, Bob Frady.
14:10 You're stupid.
14:12 I have been immersed in AI ever since we made our last acquisition.
14:15 And I got to tell you, I am excited about the future.
14:19 Like the things I'm learning about this stuff is, it's amazing.
14:24 It's amazing what it's good at.
14:25 It's amazing what it's bad at.
14:27 Skynet's just late, Jay Stockwell.
14:29 It's just late.
14:30 Yeah.
14:31 Skynet is just late.
14:32 All right, let's wrap it up and take it out of here.
14:34 We got things to do.
14:35 All right, Bob.
14:36 Lead us on.
14:37 Lead us on.
14:38 Go, baby.
14:39 Go, big red.
14:40 JBR.
14:41 Oh, wow.
14:42 What should we do to go?
14:43 Put a little spin on there.
14:44 Hold on.
14:45 One more time.
14:46 You ready?
14:47 Yeah.
14:48 You got the unique.
14:49 That's like the special throwback jersey.
14:53 It's like, okay, you ready?
14:56 Because the beginning always stays the same.
14:58 There's no like, go big red.
15:00 It's like, go, big red.
15:03 JBR.
15:04 Let's go.
15:05 Let's go!
15:06 (thud)
