00:07 You'll get all our content delivered to your email box and you'll know when Dr. Rob is
00:11 speaking and dropping wisdom.
00:13 Dropping wisdom is what he's doing.
00:14 Dr. Rob, something interesting in the Michigan State game, Nebraska 3rd and 10, normally
00:20 that's a passing down, right?
00:22 It is for most teams in this day and age.
00:24 And Nebraska maybe with the element of surprise at 3rd and 10 right here.
00:29 It is.
00:30 So it's a zone read and the thing that I thought was interesting is that you see the linebackers
00:33 keen on the quarterback and running back and they're not really keen all that much on the
00:38 blocking up front.
00:40 What you'll see, you've got the right guard pulls, tight end pulls, comes in motion I
00:45 guess rather.
00:46 I don't know if tight ends actually pull per se.
00:48 But anyway, those are your two lead blockers on the play.
00:51 You would expect classic defensive teaching, follow the blockers to the ball and that doesn't
00:57 happen on this play.
00:58 These guys are watching back in the backfield.
01:01 They both kind of get caught up on that zone read right here and then when the running
01:06 back takes off with the ball, they're caught up in the wash here and that's really what
01:11 makes that play go.
01:12 But I thought it was kind of an interesting setup that I thought Nebraska used a number
01:17 of times in the game where that zone read, the read option really did a nice job of holding
01:24 those guys in position.
01:25 Do you think Michigan State was thinking pass originally?
01:29 I would say no just because those linebackers really, really keyed hard on, I think is that
01:38 Emmett Johnson 21?
01:40 Either way.
01:41 But they were really keen on the running back and the quarterback on that play and they
01:46 were reading run the whole time.
01:47 Now on this one, same thing.
01:50 You've got the read option, you've got the zone read however you want to phrase it and
01:54 you're always going to have an option guy.
01:56 And on this play, it's the edge guy here for Michigan State.
02:00 He reads run, he kind of works his way down the line, but he's really keen hard on whether
02:07 the quarterback or running back are going to hand that ball off and that hesitation
02:12 that that creates with that read option is all that they need to free Harburg for the
02:17 touchdown run on this particular play.
02:21 And the blocking here was spectacular.
02:22 They really did a nice job with it.
02:25 And so you've got a huge hole.
02:26 Nobody's close to Harburg on that play, but that's kind of what you want to see.
02:31 When you line up in that formation, it's not like a two tights with a fullback.
02:36 So you've got the defense spread a little bit.
02:39 It's spread option football basically is what it is.
02:43 But you can see again where that option really makes the play go.
02:46 You can leave a guy completely unblocked and he's just left there flat footed because of
02:52 the fact you've got two guys potentially who can carry the ball and that delay handoff
02:57 freezes them.
