00:00 The New York City Marathon is coming up on Sunday and we've got some great weather conditions
00:06 for this year's race.
00:07 Afternoon high temperatures in the lower 60s, which means a lot of the morning hours will
00:11 be spent in the 50s, which I know a lot of long distance runners say that's the sweet
00:16 spot in the 50s.
00:18 And the good news is we keep it dry.
00:19 But sometimes you can't always control what kind of weather you're going to get on race
00:24 day.
00:25 Victoria explains how to finish the race if the conditions aren't ideal.
00:31 Fall marathons have become increasingly popular because of the milder weather.
00:35 Hopefully you will get ideal conditions which tend to be between 38 to the lower 40s and
00:42 some of that can be personal preference too.
00:44 The season can also bring a variety of weather conditions that can be hard to train or compete
00:48 in.
00:49 You have to kind of think, well what if it is windy?
00:51 What if it is icy?
00:52 What if it is hot?
00:53 How am I going to handle that?
00:54 So that's not taking you by surprise.
00:56 When race day brings challenging weather, trainers say to keep safety top of mind.
01:01 When you're running you want to be aware for any ice, any snow that may be covering ice
01:05 so that you're not slipping on the course, you're not sliding on the course.
01:09 I would prepare that this is not going to be your PR race.
01:12 This is not going to be your best race and slow down and take your time.
01:16 If it's cold, wearing the right clothing can help you complete the race.
01:20 Finding that point in your training runs that you say, "Oh my fingers are cold for the first
01:24 couple of miles here, I should incorporate gloves or scarves."
01:28 Something that you can easily remove.
01:30 If it's raining out, a trash bag can be really handy to runners.
01:34 Just because it's portable, it's disposable.
01:38 If you've got a lot of wind that can make you really cold before a race or if you have
01:42 a lot of rain, it can shield you from that.
01:45 If it's windy, one thing you can do is to run behind someone else.
01:49 Now you don't want to run so close that you're annoying that person.
01:52 Let's say you run within about three feet of that person.
01:55 If it happens to be hot...
01:57 Knowing your hydration stations and where they're at in the race, that is one of the
02:01 biggest things.
02:02 This way you can optimally hydrate without having to carry your own.
02:06 Or really bright out.
02:07 The sun can still be really strong in the fall.
02:10 So bring a pair of sunglasses.
02:12 These steps can help you get to the finish line regardless of the conditions.
