00:00 Man, oh man, the weeks just keep flying right on by.
00:03 Can you believe it?
00:04 We've reached week 10 of the college football season, and this is week 10 of Behind the
00:07 Points spread, presented by BedFred Sports.
00:10 Good to have you along on a Wednesday night.
00:11 I'm Travis Justice.
00:12 We're going to be here for the next half hour, 45 minutes, talking about the week of college
00:17 football coming up.
00:18 We're going to take a look at four games coming up, but we do want you to participate.
00:22 So if you're watching on Facebook or YouTube, you can use the comment section to ask your
00:26 questions already.
00:27 Lots of comments coming in on the YouTube site.
00:29 So if you have questions or comments, feel free to get those in the comment section.
00:34 Or better yet, we encourage you, we actually want you to phone the show, because producer
00:40 Owen, who happens to be my son, just sits there and screens calls every single week,
00:45 and he doesn't get that many phone calls.
00:46 So if you would like to phone the show and talk to Scott Spreitzer or Dr. Rob Zadiska,
00:51 just call 402-543-5556.
00:55 Speaking of the two smartest men that I know, they are with me right now.
00:58 Scott Spreitzer down in Las Vegas, Dr. Rob Zadiska in his house.
01:03 Hello, gentlemen.
01:04 Are we all in our houses?
01:07 Well, Scott looks like he's in a sports book, but yeah, Scott's in his house.
01:11 That's my house.
01:12 I got a sports book.
01:13 That's what the IRS call it.
01:15 Isn't everybody in Vegas?
01:18 Slot machines and, you know, penny poker or penny slots and sports books at every house.
01:23 That would be kind of a fun house.
01:25 Put a little shuffleboard in the back and a bar in the middle.
01:30 There you go.
01:31 Before we get started, what the hell's going on down in Vegas?
01:33 I mean, you guys just wiped out an entire coaching staff with the Raiders last night.
01:37 Now, if we can just get the moving vans to take them back to Oakland, the entire organization,
01:41 I'd be happy.
01:42 But yeah, they finally decided Mark Davis is like enough is enough, I guess, and he
01:47 had heard it from everybody.
01:48 And GM's out, head coach is out.
01:51 They've decided to bench Jimmy G. They're going to start O'Connell from Purdue.
01:55 He's going to be starting apparently the rest of the season to see what he can do.
01:58 He looked great in preseason, but it was preseason.
02:01 So we'll have to see.
02:03 But everybody in Vegas was pretty happy with the move that was made.
02:06 You know, it's funny, this Patriot bloodline, you know, that comes from Belichick and his
02:13 assistant coaches that have taken over, you know, different NFL jobs, coordinator jobs
02:18 up and down the NFL have failed miserably.
02:22 And if you take Tom Brady starts out of the record of Bill Belichick, who's one day going
02:28 to be in the camp, you know, in Canton, absolutely.
02:31 He's like a 480 win percentage lifetime in pro football, Cleveland and New England, when
02:36 Tom Brady is not his quarterback.
02:38 So it's one of those things, man.
02:41 I mean, I'm glad he's out.
02:43 You know, there's rumors out here.
02:44 Everybody wants Jim Harbaugh to be fed up with the NCAA and take the job in Vegas.
02:48 So that may happen.
02:50 But it's just you said one thing you want to take the moving that you guys in Vegas
02:56 would be stuck with a really big stadium, right, that nobody would use.
02:59 So you kind of need a concert.
03:03 Does Vegas not like the Raiders?
03:08 It's 50/50.
03:09 I mean, I just I figured people would.
03:13 I don't know.
03:14 It's it seemed like a match made in heaven.
03:16 I mean, I got to be honest with you.
03:18 Well, Vegas likes a winner.
03:20 And well, true.
03:21 The biggest Golden Knights, you know, they went out of the blocks first season.
03:25 They go to the Stanley Cup finals, lost to Washington.
03:28 But with that happening with the opening night, like just a few days after the October one
03:34 massacre here in Las Vegas on the strip was a few nights later.
03:38 And the hockey team, the first responders, the fans all came together.
03:42 And boy, I mean, it was just like it was so how do you want to say it?
03:46 It was such great therapy, I guess, for the city of Vegas to have that team.
03:51 And then they went out of the blocks.
03:52 Everybody fell in love with the team and it's born and bred.
03:55 It's not a team that was brought from somewhere else.
03:57 It was born and bred.
03:58 I think they'll support the Oakland A's, but the Raiders got to win.
04:02 I mean, this is a town that if you're not winning, Jerry, I'll tell you real quick,
04:05 Jerry Tarkanian, when he was in his heyday at UNLV and they would get their eighteen
04:10 thousand five hundred every single game at the Thomas and Mac.
04:14 And he came out, he just said one day, candidly on radio, he goes,
04:17 watch us go ten and twenty a couple of years.
04:19 And I'll bet you there's not ten thousand people in these stands.
04:21 Well, Tarkanian leaves, Rolly Massimino comes in, damages the program.
04:26 Nobody ever. And they're getting seven or eight thousand people a night.
04:30 That's it for the run and Rebels basketball program.
04:32 So it's you got to win.
04:34 I mean, you have to win this town or you're gone.
04:36 I think it's a lot of places like that.
04:38 People, they want to be entertained.
04:40 If they're not entertained, they're just going to stay and watch at home.
04:43 That's for sure.
04:44 Hey, if you want to watch and work with Scott Spritzer, it's easy to do so.

05:40 Here are the games we're going to be talking about tonight, and they are some good ones.
05:43 Actually, you got the K-State Texas game, which some people already have some questions about.
05:47 Washington's going to visit USC, Iowa Northwestern.
05:51 That's going to be played at Wrigley Field.
05:54 It's just to hear Scott's take on what playing in a baseball field can do,
05:57 because Kirk Ferenc doesn't like to do it.
05:58 Plus, Iowa has now learned that Brian Ferenc is not going to be back after the season
06:04 and will wrap the show up with the Nebraska Michigan State game,
06:08 which will also be an interesting one.
06:10 So are you guys ready to get started for tonight?
06:13 Absolutely.
06:14 All right. First game on the docket is going to be that Kansas State Texas game Saturday,
06:19 11 o'clock in the morning on Fox.
06:22 Texas, a four and a half point favorite, the over under at 50 and a half.
06:26 Scott.
06:27 Yeah, I'll tell you what, man.
06:29 First of all, when I look at this line and see what's happened with that over under,
06:32 I mean, that's the story in this game thus far.
06:35 That was 54 and a half when it opened.
06:37 As you see, 50 and a half there.
06:39 There's most books now, and I was just punching up my line service.
06:43 I got about 25 books all around the world on my line service,
06:45 and most books are at 49 and a half right now.
06:48 So that totals dropped a full five points from where it opened,
06:52 and that's been hit as much as anything right now.
06:55 But I look at what Kansas State has done, because when I looked at that metric
06:59 we talked about a couple of weeks ago, which is, of course, net points per drive offense,
07:04 and then, of course, net points per drive allowed on defense.
07:07 I was kind of looking at that, man, these teams are just so evenly matched.
07:10 Texas number 10 in that category, K-State's number 11.
07:14 My only question mark, and I don't have a lot of question marks when it comes to Chris Gleiman,
07:20 but my only question mark for that in this year is that who they've beaten.
07:24 They've really beaten nobody.
07:25 They've only, and you can only beat who's in front of you, and I get all that kind of talk,
07:28 but the only team they've beaten above 500 was Troy, which is also the best defense they've faced,
07:35 statistically speaking.
07:36 So you would think this is a bit of a step up in level of competition.
07:40 Then you flip over to Texas, you're going, "Okay, well, they hung 34 on Bama.
07:44 They hung 40 on Kansas.
07:45 They didn't beat Oklahoma.
07:46 I didn't think they'd win that game."
07:48 We talked about that a couple of days before that game was played, but you can't run on Texas,
07:52 and that's what K-State wants to do.
07:54 They want to run the football, guys, so I'm a little bit worried about K-State there.
07:57 Texas does have their backup quarterback here, but I think they find a way to win this game by seven,
08:02 which gets you over that point spread.
08:04 And seeing a lot of fours and a whole bunch of 49 and a halves, I know some books have four
08:08 and a half on that line as we speak, but going to lean with the Texas Longhorns here.
08:13 - The interesting one is, and we have these numbers up here, Kansas State 11 and 3 against the spread
08:16 on a conference run, and Klyman is 37 to 19 against the spread in all games
08:21 that K-State has head coached.
08:22 That's a hell of a run.
08:24 - Absolutely.
08:24 It makes it tough to go against them.
08:26 What it means is his teams are always prepared, and a lot of times, they're undervalued,
08:31 and that's how you get to records like that.
08:33 Great coaching, solid playing, and of course, undervalued by the books.
08:37 And when it comes to this particular game, if there's going to be a team that would be undervalued
08:42 at all, it's not much, but it would be K-State because of the Texas Longhorns.
08:45 You know, that little name across the front of your jersey can kind of make you lay a couple
08:48 of points more than you should sometimes.
08:50 But I like this dual quarterback thing that Klyman's doing.
08:54 He's got Will Howard, of course, and then he's got this guy who's as quick as it gets
08:57 in Avery Johnson.
08:59 So for me, it's a situation where I do think Texas will be a little bit too strong
09:03 against the run, and I think that will put them over the top of this game.
09:07 But by no means am I saying, "Boy, this should be your top player of the week."
09:10 No way at all.
09:11 I mean, it's going to be tight.
09:13 - Rob, you're a Klyman fan too, aren't you?
09:15 - Yeah, I love Klyman.
09:17 I mean, I like what he's doing at Kansas State, but I mean, it's kind of all the stuff
09:21 that Scott's already talked about in terms of relying on the run, good defense,
09:25 that kind of thing.
09:27 My question here on this one is, why did the over-under drop so much?
09:32 - Yeah, it's just I think it has a lot to do with these matchups when you're talking
09:35 about the fact that K-State is middle of the pack when it comes to passing the
09:38 football.
09:39 They're going to want to run the football.
09:40 It's what they do, and Texas is outstanding at stopping the run,
09:43 so they're probably looking into that a little bit.
09:46 Texas, with a backup quarterback, is going to have to run the ball maybe a little bit
09:49 more than they want to do.
09:50 I mean, he's got his feet wet already having to fill in for the injured Ewers,
09:54 but the bottom line is I think that's part of the reason that it's been dropping is
09:57 just both teams want to establish the run, and Texas is darn good at stopping it.
10:02 - Question coming in as I cover both of you up from Cole, KSU versus Texas,
10:07 a great game.
10:07 Not going to be easy without Ewers as quarterback.
10:09 I do like Texas' interior defense against KSU's interior offensive line.
10:14 Sweat-murfing Collins, they're difficult to block.
10:16 So just some comments coming in from Cole there.
10:19 - And I agree with him.
10:20 Yeah, I agree with him, definitely.
10:22 - Next game on the docket, this is an interesting one.
10:25 It's out in the back 12.
10:26 Washington's going to be at USC, a 6-30 at-night game on ABC.
10:30 Washington, a 3.5-point favorite.
10:32 You're over-under.
10:33 Man, there's some points there counting on being scored here at 76.5.
10:38 - Guys, I'm a little bit worried about my Huskies this week.
10:41 - Really?
10:41 - Yeah, and I got that 22-1 national title ticket sitting in my pocket,
10:46 but I think, you know, I'd never say that there's a trap game being presented
10:51 by the sportsbooks, but this almost feels like it.
10:55 You would look at this game, you would look at what USC's defense has done this
10:59 year and how they've played of late, how Caleb Williams has played of late,
11:02 dropping off, and you're thinking, "Really?
11:04 Washington's only 3.5?"
11:06 I mean, I got a lot of people doing shows around the country who, you know,
11:09 they're like, "Shouldn't this be 6?
11:10 Shouldn't this be 6.5?"
11:11 And that makes you think twice.
11:13 And, of course, Washington hasn't been the same on offense the last few games
11:16 without Jalen McMillan, a fine wide receiver.
11:18 They've got other guys who are go-to guys at wideout, but McMillan is almost like the
11:23 catalyst to make it all work and come together.
11:26 That worries me a little bit.
11:27 So it is a scary game, and it opened four, and it's down to 3.5.
11:32 Yeah, check this out.
11:33 Of the couple of books that I get betting information from,
11:37 about 75% of the tickets they've taken, the tickets are on Washington,
11:42 yet the number's coming down.
11:43 That tells you it's a Joes versus Pros game.
11:46 And the public could win, but the public's on Washington.
11:49 The sharp respected money is on USC plus the points in this game.
11:53 You know, I'd love to say that Penix just absolutely tears this Trojans defense
11:58 and secondary apart, and maybe he will, but I really think, Dan,
12:01 this is almost like a season-saving game for USC.
12:07 And, boy, they're going to throw everything at Washington,
12:09 including the kitchen sink, I really believe so in this game.
12:12 Now, if you look at that graphic in front of you, you're going to see that if you're
12:15 an Ingalls player or a situational player when it comes to the spread,
12:19 you're going to think USC's cooked in this game.
12:21 But, again, it's a very scary contest, and I'm probably going to steer clear
12:27 completely of this game, watch Washington, and root for my 22-1 ticket.
12:32 I don't care if they win by one, just win the freaking game.
12:35 - The last one there intrigues me, and this is all of college football,
12:39 and college football teams have covered just 17 of the last 66 November games.
12:45 If they lost at least five in a row against the spread by at least 49 combined points,
12:52 that's crazy.
12:52 - Yeah, and USC, you know, their last five games, they've lost against the spread
12:57 by 77 points.
12:59 So they're firmly in that graphic of being a go-against.
13:02 And here's the thing, those teams, like, when it gets to November 1st,
13:06 I mean, I start this probably, like, around October 20th or so,
13:10 where I start, like, building a roster in my notebook.
13:13 I do old-fashioned pen and paper, and I start writing down teams that I think
13:16 are going to be dead within two weeks.
13:18 Their season's going to be just washed away.
13:20 They don't have a new coach, just things got flat.
13:23 And I write these teams down.
13:24 I can't do that with USC because there's just too darn much talent and skill
13:27 on this team to say, "Okay, they're just going to write them off and be a dead team."
13:31 But there are teams, you know, you usually end up with three or four by first or
13:35 second week.
13:35 I'd say second week in November.
13:36 Next week, we'll have them.
13:37 We'll have three or four teams that it's either you play against and you look
13:40 to play against, or you stay dead set away from that team because they're
13:43 basically a dead team.
13:44 - Rob, do you think Lincoln Riley was one of these guys who thought it would be
13:48 easier in the Pac-12, and that's why he took it, and he's finding out that life's
13:52 not as easy in the Pac-12 anyway?
13:54 Or did he just go for the money?
13:56 - I'm sure it's a combination of things.
13:59 I mean, I thought he might...
14:00 I think he thought it might be easier in the Pac-12 in terms of getting
14:03 into the playoff.
14:06 The thing is, though, with that, did he know that Oklahoma was moving
14:12 to the SEC?
14:14 And I don't blame him.
14:15 He had to have.
14:16 - No, he did.
14:17 - Yeah.
14:18 I mean, I think that's one of those things where he's looking at that going, "Okay,
14:23 is it going to be easier to make the playoff with Oklahoma in the SEC or with
14:28 USC in the Pac-12?"
14:30 And I think he figured it's going to be way easier to make that with USC
14:33 in the Pac-12.
14:35 The money definitely had to have been there as well, too.
14:38 I think it's kind of a wash in terms of talent and, I guess I'd call it future
14:47 acquisition of talent.
14:49 And what I mean by that is you look at USC, I mean, Barry Switzer always had that
14:55 line about how driving from LAX to Watts to the USC campus, you drove past more
15:05 talent than any other place in the country.
15:08 And I think he was right.
15:09 There's a ton of kids out there.
15:11 There's a lot of numbers out there.
15:14 And so, from a recruiting standpoint, I think it's a wash whether you're at USC
15:21 or you're at Oklahoma where you can just absolutely raid the state of Texas.
15:25 And Oklahoma does that every year.
15:30 So, I think recruiting-wise, it's a wash.
15:32 I think in terms of facilities, everything else, it's a wash.
15:36 I just think he thought it would be an easier route to the playoff, like you said.
15:42 - I think kids like the sexiness in younger people of LA, you know, and not trying
15:49 to rip Norman at all.
15:50 I mean, I'm from a small town myself and I love it to this day being from a small town.
15:53 - Hey, Omaha's not small.
15:54 - No, no, I'm talking about Bellevue, which is not...
15:56 It's not tiny.
15:57 - Hold on, hold on, hold on.
15:59 There's no difference between Bellevue and Omaha.
16:01 I mean, you don't even know when you're in Bellevue.
16:05 - You got to cross the street, Travis.
16:07 - When I grew up in Bellevue, there were 20,000 people in Bellevue.
16:11 - But it was right next door to Omaha.
16:13 - Well, yeah, but, you know, most of...
16:15 I moved out here when I was 17.
16:16 I barely had a car.
16:17 - 480 goes right there.
16:18 - All right, so here...
16:19 Actually, here's a question for...
16:20 - I'm not trying to defend Omaha or Norman.
16:23 - Scott, you're in Vegas, which is basically East LA.
16:27 - Pretty much.
16:28 - I got a...
16:31 - A little Cheech and Chong.
16:33 - I got Cheeches born in East LA in my head right now.
16:39 Everybody over the age of 50 is getting this, so...
16:44 Here's the thing.
16:48 I mean, when you look at USC, I don't think California kids look at USC, UCLA and go,
16:54 "Okay, I want to play for the hometown team."
16:56 I don't think they look at it that way.
16:58 - Yeah, could be.
16:59 - So, from a recruiting...
17:00 Now, kids in Texas and Oklahoma do.
17:03 I think it's a bigger deal there.
17:06 I think LA sort of views itself as we're the nation city.
17:11 I mean, it's...
17:12 There's no...
17:13 I don't think there's a big...
17:14 - God, I hate LA.
17:17 - I just...
17:18 - LA's a shithole.
17:18 - I just don't think any of those recruits are...
17:21 I just don't think the recruits are looking at the situation of,
17:24 "Oh, yeah, I'm going to go to USC because it's the 'hometown team.'"
17:29 I don't think that plays into it, which, I mean...
17:33 And that's the question...
17:34 The other question I had when I look at this game, I look at the line.
17:40 And, I mean, how much of a home field advantage does USC actually have here?
17:47 - Well, it's not big.
17:49 I mean, it's not...
17:50 Like I have said before, my home field advantage is when I'm set in the line for a game.
17:54 It's not all just to put a three on it, like a lot of people used to say.
17:59 - And that's what everybody still...
18:00 I mean, I should say, a lot of people think that.
18:03 - And it's not that way, guys.
18:05 Because, like I said, I mean, for instance, Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska,
18:09 when you were playing, Rob, I mean, that was like a five and a half, six.
18:12 I mean, that was...
18:13 - That was way different than it is now.
18:14 - Yeah, it's like a two now, you know?
18:17 And it's probably up from where it was the last two years.
18:19 - Yeah, when Northern Iowa can come into town or Georgia...
18:23 Was it Georgia Southern?
18:26 - Georgia Southern, yeah.
18:27 - Yeah, when Georgia Southern comes into town and knocks you off,
18:30 you can't tell me the home field advantage is there.
18:33 - I got to clear something up real quick here, though.
18:37 If I had to move to Omaha or LA, I would be moving to Omaha.
18:41 Can I make that clear?
18:42 That's for having to throw me under the bus among my favorite people.
18:45 - No, I was talking about proximity.
18:47 Like, you don't even know when you're in and out of Bellevue anymore.
18:51 I mean, I can't tell you when I'm in Ralston, Papillion, La Vista, Millard, Elkhorn.
18:56 It's just one big city to me anymore.
18:59 - Well, remember when I was...
19:00 I moved out of Omaha a month after graduation, high school graduation.
19:03 I was 17.
19:04 I had a car for maybe and a license for maybe the final four or five months I lived in Omaha.
19:09 So my world was Bellevue West Campus, Bellevue East Campus, Logan Middle School, you know, places.
19:17 That was my world.
19:18 And they were all within walking distance of where I lived, basically.
19:20 So, you know, but I know Omaha's a great town.
19:23 LA has its parts.
19:24 Listen, if you can live in Malibu on the cliffs, you're doing all right.
19:28 - Well, that's true.
19:28 - But there are some really bad left and right turns that you can take
19:32 if you don't know what you're doing.
19:34 - All right.
19:34 So let's get back to USC.
19:36 And my question is, is there a home field advantage at USC?
19:42 Because I don't think there's...
19:43 I mean, if Nebraska in the '90s was five and a half,
19:48 I think USC, when they're playing good football, it's like two.
19:53 - Oh, I was going to say two and a half this year.
19:55 You know, I believe that's where I have it.
19:58 It's no bigger than two and a half.
19:59 So you're absolutely right about that.
20:02 I mean, you look at Washington, you're talking a four, you know,
20:05 as far as their home field advantage, but they're playing at SC.
20:07 So, I'm not a two and a half.
20:08 - Husky Stadium's a bitch.
20:10 That is not an easy place to play football.
20:14 - Sure.
20:15 - Shorty69 is like, "Cover you guys up again."
20:18 Says, "I'm interested in seeing how Iowa responds to losing Brian Ferentz."
20:22 Well, first of all, they haven't lost Brian Ferentz yet.
20:24 He's going to be with the team through the bowl game if he chooses to do so.
20:28 - But the players know he's gone.
20:30 - That's true.
20:31 They're going to be at Wrigley Field this weekend to play Northwestern.
20:35 Northwestern with a nice win over Maryland last week, a 2-30 game on Peacock.
20:38 Iowa, five-point favorite, over under it at 31.
20:42 This opened up, I believe it went 29, which was the lowest point total in college football history.
20:48 - Wait a sec.
20:48 It's gone up?
20:49 - It has.
20:52 It has gone up.
20:52 - Yeah, maybe too many people think that Ferentz is already gone, Brian Ferentz.
20:56 - Oh, Ferentz got fired.
20:58 It's going to be a freaking fireworks.
21:02 - Well, you know what's going to happen here?
21:03 Ferentz has no more pressure on him.
21:06 He's out the door.
21:07 He's going to start opening up the playbook.
21:09 They're going to pile up 38 points each of the next two games or something,
21:12 now that he's got no pressure on him.
21:15 I don't believe that's going to happen, but I wouldn't be shocked.
21:17 But yeah, they're playing at Wrigley in Chicago.
21:19 For anybody that's going to this game, check out Murphy's Centerfield Bar
21:22 behind Centerfield across the street.
21:24 One of my favorite little joints to go after cubby games.
21:27 But listen, they played eight games this season.
21:29 They're 6-2, despite scoring an average of less than two offensive touchdowns per game.
21:35 They average what?
21:35 14 points per game.
21:37 Or they've scored 14 of those games where they've had a couple of touchdowns by the offense.
21:41 So they're 6-2.
21:44 Their defense ranks third in the nation in net points per drive allowed.
21:48 I'm catching up my points per drive notes here.
21:52 And they've got the nation's 121st ranked offense in net points per drive scored.
21:58 Northwestern's offense, 101st in the same metric.
22:02 The problem for Northwestern is their defense is nowhere as good as Iowa's, as we all know.
22:07 But you know, the Hawkeyes can't run.
22:08 They can't pass.
22:09 133rd in the old-fashioned statistic of total yards per game out of 133 teams.
22:14 And the Northwestern's offense is only 12 points higher.
22:17 I looked at this, and you see the graphic there after we get to that
22:22 statement there.
22:22 I missed it.
22:23 I saw a statement something about the Cubs.
22:24 I got to scroll back to it.
22:25 There's more scoring for the Cubs when the wind is blowing out than points scored in this game.
22:29 I love it.
22:30 Dude, you nailed it right there.
22:32 I love it.
22:33 And that's why I said you might want to spend your time at Murphy's Pub,
22:36 because they've got a couple of nice pool tables, some nice bottomless draft beers,
22:41 and all that kind of good stuff.
22:42 But listen, I was looking back at this, and you kind of see it there.
22:46 This team is, what, 14-4 to the under the last 18 times with a total set of 42 or less.
22:51 And then you see the run, though, as a favorite of more than three points and up to 10
22:55 for Ferentz since he's been there, the head coach, Ferentz.
22:58 But, boy, I'm going back and forth on this game a little bit, guys.
23:02 Iowa games 10 and 1 after a home game to the under with an average of 26 points per game
23:08 being scored.
23:09 I just, you know, again, it's one of those tricky situations where I was ready to play
23:14 the under in this game until I saw what happened with Brian Ferentz.
23:19 And I thought, you know, I see this stuff happen once in a while where a coach is told
23:24 he's going to be gone or announces he's going to be gone because he was told in private
23:28 quarters that you're going to be gone at the end of the year.
23:30 And all of a sudden, the playbook opens up.
23:32 You know, and they start to relax.
23:34 - Scott, the playbook opening up for Brian Ferentz is he's going to run fullback dives
23:41 straight up the gut on every single play.
23:44 That doesn't mean he opens up the playbook.
23:48 That means he's like, "All right, we don't have to open it up.
23:51 We can tighten this shit down now."
23:53 - I'm going to say Iowa wins by a field goal in this game.
23:58 - Yeah, I mean, he's going to go like full, like, Amos Alonso stag from here on out.
24:04 - By the way, Kirk Ferentz actually had to release a statement tonight because yesterday
24:10 during his news conference, he was pressed on whether he was going to be back as head
24:13 coach because I've talked to several people within the program who've said they've never
24:18 seen him as upset as he is now just because he did not get to make the call.
24:23 Well, he didn't get to make the call, but that's what happened.
24:24 - How did he not see this coming?
24:26 - Because he wasn't in his...
24:28 - Which, by the way, can I clarify something here?
24:31 - Yes.
24:31 - I'm a Kirk Ferentz fan.
24:33 - So here's what...
24:34 - I've met the guy.
24:35 He's as close to Tom Osborne as you will find in this world.
24:41 - Because...
24:42 - I love the guy.
24:43 - Here is what he said yesterday is that he wanted his process to take place where after
24:49 the season, when emotions are down, it's not as an emotional that he gets to do the evaluation.
24:55 The problem is Brian Ferentz answers to the athletic director because of the nepotism
25:00 laws in the state of Iowa.
25:01 So the athletic director, his direct report said, "Yeah, you're gone."
25:05 And that set him for a loop.
25:08 Basically, it's okay until it's not okay, right?
25:12 And finally, an AV who's on an interim tag put her foot down and said, "No, we're going
25:19 to make this call because you're not going to hit your number.
25:21 You signed the contract.
25:22 You agreed to the deal.
25:23 And that's what's going to happen."
25:24 This offense is brutal.
25:26 - It's almost impossible.
25:28 - Yeah, it's just not going to happen.
25:30 - Well, is it because of a...
25:32 I mean, you want to have a chance to recruit a little bit better when it comes to offensive
25:37 players and skill players by saying Brian Ferentz was out?
25:39 Does that even matter that much?
25:41 - Give me one reason to go to Iowa to play offense right now.
25:44 There's not one...
25:45 - Which is amazing.
25:46 - ...recruiting by saying he's gone.
25:48 - They keep signing tight ends like it's nobody's business.
25:52 - Because that's the only position they use on offense and hell, the other...
25:55 - No, they don't.
25:56 - Well, hold on.
25:57 Luke Cluchet, they're two best tight ends...
25:59 - Okay, they get amazing tight ends.
26:01 They're all first or second round draft picks.
26:03 They have great NFL careers and they still don't throw to them at Iowa.
26:08 - Well, I would say the tight ends at Iowa this year have the most catches so far because
26:13 they don't throw to wide receivers.
26:15 But, Rob, don't forget...
26:15 - They don't have a wide receiver.
26:17 They all transferred and got suspended.
26:20 - Luke Cluchet, going to be a first or second round draft pick.
26:24 He's out for the season.
26:25 Then Eric Aul is also out for the season with a torn ACL.
26:29 So they're missing some key components and they're using...
26:32 And Kirk Ferentz is using injuries a little bit...
26:35 - But when they had Hawkinson, when they had Noah Fante, I mean...
26:39 - Noah was used more as a hybrid between a wide receiver and a tight end.
26:46 - And they threw to him.
26:47 - Yeah, and they threw to him, not as much as they threw to Hawkinson.
26:50 They threw to Hawkinson more than...
26:51 - I mean, they threw to Hawkinson.
26:52 He had the catch that killed Nebraska's hopes and dreams.
26:56 - They threw to George Kittle, but George Kittle is a much better tight end in the National
27:00 Football League than he ever was at Iowa.
27:01 He developed late.
27:02 By the way, Scott...
27:03 - Laporta had a great touchdown the other night, by the way.
27:06 - He did.
27:07 Yeah.
27:08 Sam Laporta, another good one.
27:09 Kyle says, "Rest in peace, Bobby Knight.
27:12 I was born in '88, learned some great lessons from him."
27:14 Bobby Knight did pass away tonight at the age of 83.
27:18 You didn't know that.
27:18 - I missed this.
27:20 - Yeah, Bobby Knight died about...
27:22 Well, the announcement came out about two, maybe three hours ago.
27:25 - Right.
27:25 - But yeah.
27:26 - Where's that other one?
27:29 - Oh, here it is.
27:30 Tom says, "Bellevue is South Omaha."
27:32 - Bellevue is South Omaha.
27:34 - Tom's right.
27:35 - He's 100%, 100% right.
27:39 - Well, my parents went to South O.
27:42 They went to Omaha South.
27:43 I forget what they called it back then, but they went to South Omaha.
27:48 And I'm too young to remember the little slang term they had for their area of South Omaha
27:52 that they went to.
27:53 And then they moved to Bellevue.
27:56 My parents moved to Bellevue six, seven years before I was born, but they were South Omaha,
28:00 born and bred.
28:00 They lived up by the stockyards and the Polish home and all that, where there used to be
28:04 houses up there.
28:05 And I don't think there are any more, but real close to South Omaha, South High, I should say.
28:09 And that's where I got into sports, Benny, right down the street at that little smoke
28:13 shop, that little sports shop with the cigarettes and tobacco.
28:16 And in the back room, football, football, football.
28:19 - Our final game of the night is going to be Nebraska at Michigan State.
28:24 Rob, I'm surprised you didn't wear your Michigan State gear tonight, because Rob has love and
28:29 affection for the Spartans.
28:30 A 2-30 game on FS1, Nebraska, three-point favorite.
28:33 The over-under at 34 and a half on this.
28:35 - Yeah, you guys know what I've been doing, and it's been, you know, go against Michigan
28:39 State or stay away from their games since Mel Tucker, that Mel Tucker scandal broke.
28:44 Since then, they're 0-6 straight up.
28:46 They're 1-5 against the spread.
28:48 And I jotted down some numbers, guys, that I wanted to mention that, you know, first
28:52 of all, their average at 11 points per game during the six-game skid.
28:55 And look at the numbers, 98 yards rushing per game, 3.3 yards per carry, 55% passing,
29:02 188 passing yards per game on just 5.2 yards per pass, four touchdowns, nine interceptions.
29:11 That's Michigan State's offensive resume over the last six games in which they've gone 0-6.
29:16 Again, they lost all or five of those six games by double digits.
29:20 They had that three-point loss to Rutgers.
29:23 Everything else was just downright ugly.
29:24 But I think Nebraska's defense, because Michigan State has nothing on offense, if they continue
29:29 to stay focused, Tony White works that magic, man.
29:32 What a great coach.
29:33 I think Nebraska's defense should have a field day against Michigan State, their defense.
29:38 And then the Spartans' defense wasn't bad.
29:40 It really wasn't the problem.
29:42 The first couple of losses after Tucker got knocked out of this program, if they can get
29:48 their second wind on defense, they can make life tough on Nebraska because Nebraska wants
29:52 to run the football, obviously.
29:54 And Michigan State, before they started, like the last couple of games when they were kind
29:57 of getting worn down, they started to give up some rushing yardage.
30:01 But before that, they were really good against the run.
30:03 So if they can get their second wind, they can harass Nebraska for a while.
30:06 I just love what Rule's doing.
30:08 I just told you about that Pro Scout who said the two hardest working teams in practice,
30:12 the Georgia Bulldogs and Nebraska.
30:14 And I think they eventually are going to be too physical for Michigan State.
30:18 Michigan State is on my potential dead team list.
30:21 They've been there for a while.
30:22 If Michigan State loses this game, they probably don't even come close to winning another game
30:27 this season.
30:28 So yeah, do I think the point spread is correct?
30:30 Yeah.
30:30 I mean, it's basically been three, three and a half.
30:32 So the sportsbooks did their job.
30:34 Nobody's coming in with big time money on either side in this game, at least to the
30:38 books I talked to.
30:38 So I do think Nebraska is going to win.
30:41 I think they win this one by eight to ten points.
30:43 I think it's another ugly game.
30:45 And they just wear down State in the final quarter.
30:47 And you know, like a 24-14 type of game, 23-13 type of game.
30:52 I think these numbers on Matt Rule are impressive.
30:55 16-38 against spread all games.
30:58 He's coached at the college level, including 30-13 against the spread on the road.
31:01 Look at those November games, 20-7.
31:04 Do you use this historical data very much?
31:09 Or is this more for entertainment purposes only?
31:12 Well, I do that because he had to take over two programs before Nebraska.
31:16 And then, of course, the Huskers, who were in bad shape too.
31:18 But two programs that were really down.
31:20 I mean, they were down trying programs at Baylor and Temple.
31:23 And he got them to buy more into his system as the season moved on.
31:27 And then, of course, his time in both of those locales.
31:30 And I think it shows you right there.
31:32 Hard-nosed practicing, man.
31:34 When it gets to that fourth quarter, when it gets late in the season, in November, you
31:38 saw that 20-7 spread stat in November.
31:40 As a head coach, that's telling you his teams are in better shape.
31:43 And they're going to wear you down when you get into the month of November, when you get
31:46 into the fourth quarter.
31:47 No fear when they go on the road.
31:48 They cover numbers there too.
31:50 Those teams under his college direction.
31:52 So I do think this is the kind of team angle or coaching angle that you can use to make
31:58 a final, you know, the final icing on the cake to make a decision if you're going to
32:02 play a team or not.
32:03 I think this is the kind you can use.
32:04 Jason drops an F-bomb for some unknown reason.
32:08 But he says he moved to Vegas in April.
32:10 Hold on.
32:12 Hold on.
32:12 What's wrong with that?
32:14 Nothing.
32:15 Nothing whatsoever.
32:16 All right.
32:16 Just checking.
32:17 Yeah.
32:17 But he wants to know if you can recommend a restaurant that's not on the strip.
32:20 Oh, yeah.
32:21 #TravisHatesJesus and #SorryDave.
32:23 #TravisHatesJesus?
32:24 I love Jason.
32:27 Jason's my guy.
32:29 Jason is a regular listener to the podcast.
32:31 Jason is my guy.
32:32 Yeah.
32:33 Love that.
32:34 I'm going to give him a couple.
32:36 And I'm telling you what right now, you can't find...
32:38 First of all, we got to get Travis Justice out here.
32:40 I mean, obviously his Italian background.
32:42 You know, I was just thinking about that.
32:43 I'm not Italian.
32:45 I thought you were.
32:46 Well, I just go to Italy all the time.
32:48 But I have zero Italian blood in me whatsoever.
32:51 It's actually pronounced "Ju-stee-say."
32:53 Yeah.
32:54 Well, what's your background?
32:56 I'm Scottish.
32:57 You're Scottish?
32:57 Oh, wow.
32:58 Well, there you go.
32:59 I hope that's the only time I'm going to speak with him on a football show.
33:01 I'm Scottish and German.
33:03 You're North British.
33:04 Well, that goes with...
33:05 I had a spiel I just worked out in my head reading his question that he said in there
33:10 about restaurants.
33:11 But I got to throw that out.
33:12 I was going to say, you know, we got more Italians out here in Vegas.
33:15 Basically anywhere west of Sicily.
33:18 And we've got some great Italian restaurants that would make the boot proud.
33:21 And I was giving you credit for being Italian.
33:23 I see all your Italian trips.
33:24 And here I find out you're not.
33:26 I'm disappointed.
33:26 Haggis.
33:27 You're Haggis.
33:27 Okay.
33:28 I'm not one to change your name.
33:30 But...
33:30 You like Haggis, by the way.
33:31 But I'll tell you what.
33:35 Two restaurants I got to give this guy right now, Jason.
33:37 If you like a steakhouse and you don't want to pay $3,000 for a couple, go to Echo and
33:43 Rig and it's in a place called Tivoli Square here in Las Vegas.
33:47 A real nice area, North Summerlin, kind of North Summerlin.
33:50 It's right by a golf course.
33:51 Beautiful Echo and Rig is a beautiful steakhouse.
33:54 And then Nora's, best Italian place off the strip in Las Vegas.
33:58 Reasonable price.
33:59 Been around forever.
34:00 Back in the day, you'd see, you know, questionable characters walking in that used to run things
34:06 in Vegas.
34:06 The way it ought to be.
34:08 The way it ought to be.
34:09 Travis, no Italian blood.
34:11 Can't all be perfect.
34:12 I love it.
34:13 This is...
34:14 I'm not sure you're Italian, Travis.
34:16 This is my...
34:17 That's my...
34:18 That's one of the beer suppliers we've got.
34:26 Oh, is it?
34:27 I did not know that.
34:28 I did not know that.
34:29 Tom's active on the YouTube tonight.
34:31 Sportsman's Store in South O had all the tout sheets when I was growing up.
34:36 The gold sheet playbook, etc.
34:37 Good times.
34:38 I think that's it.
34:39 Sportsman's.
34:40 I remember my dad used to chew tobacco.
34:42 Key tobacco is what it was called.
34:44 And we were in there, you know, of course, that's we were grabbing the sheets, the betting
34:48 sheets that came out on Tuesdays.
34:50 And so I can remember all the way back to being like seven, eight years old and getting
34:54 those sports sheets.
34:54 I couldn't wait for Tuesdays.
34:55 I was like the one kid in my grade school who was like, "It's Tuesday night, yeah!"
34:59 And then I'd sit there and I'd go over the sheets.
35:01 And I remember they used to make you lay.
35:03 If it was a pick 'em game, you had to lay one and a half each way.
35:06 There was no underdog.
35:07 There was no one point.
35:08 And if you liked Nebraska and they were laying three to Michigan State, well, sportsman's
35:12 of the sheets they dealt with and those guys, you had to lay seven with Nebraska.
35:16 When everywhere else in the country, you could lay three.
35:18 So I just remember good times and sportsman's.
35:21 I believe that's it.
35:22 That's got to be it because that certainly ring a bell.
35:24 402-543-5556.
35:27 Is this Kim?
35:30 Who's this?
35:33 Oh, they hung up.
35:37 I got to ask one question to you guys.
35:38 My favorite restaurant to show you that, yeah, I was blue collar, my family was blue collar,
35:44 was a place called Rudy's.
35:46 And I can't remember the exact location.
35:49 It wasn't too far from the Joe Test place.
35:52 And they were related somehow.
35:53 Rudy Stephan was his name.
35:55 And we used to go there on, you know, I grew up Catholic and we used to go there on Fridays
36:00 and we'd get these carp fish sandwiches and we would drown them in hot sauce.
36:05 I mean, the hottest sauce you can figure, you know, you can find.
36:07 And it was a little bar and people would sit there like a cafe at a bar.
36:11 And then they had maybe five or six tables.
36:13 It looked like somebody's house.
36:15 And I can't remember the address right now, but it wasn't too far from Joe Test.
36:18 And it was called Rudy's and it was unbelievable.
36:21 I'll let you know.
36:24 There's a Rudy's bar up in Benson.
36:28 This was real close to Joe Test.
36:34 And Joe Test is still there.
36:35 Maybe the one in Benson, it's the same.
36:37 Might be the same people, same family.
36:40 But Rudy Stephan was his name, the owner.
36:42 And I just remember going there on Fridays, you know, when I was a Catholic and we'd sit
36:47 there and just douse those people.
36:49 There you go.
36:50 Oh, there it is.
36:50 20th and Missouri.
36:51 You got it.
36:52 My man.
36:52 All right.
36:53 Is it still there or anything like it, Tom?
36:56 That's what I got to know.
36:58 I'll come back just for that.
36:59 I can't believe you ate carp, man.
37:01 Those fish are bottom feeders.
37:03 That's bad.
37:04 You know, you're just like the folks out here.
37:05 Lobster is a bottom feeder, Travis.
37:07 Come on.
37:08 Travis, you're just like the folks out here.
37:09 Carp is good.
37:10 As long as you know how to get the bones out, carp is good.
37:15 Yeah, you got to be careful.
37:16 But man, it's fried and then you douse it in hot sauce and they give you rye bread and
37:21 it would be like drowned in pickle juice.
37:23 The rye bread.
37:23 Oh, if it's still there, I'm coming back.
37:25 Dude, carp's good.
37:29 Don't knock it.
37:30 Thank you.
37:31 Thank you.
37:32 Travis, don't talk to these hoity-toity guys like we got here in Vegas.
37:35 Dude, he's highfalutin'.
37:37 By the way, what we've learned tonight is who to bet on.
37:40 And also, if you need any answers from South Omaha, we can get them because the people listening
37:46 to the show are passionate about it.
37:48 Carp is my dad would buy at Joe Test and tell him he had walleye.
37:53 I didn't know any better.
37:54 See, walleye is a better fish than carp.
37:56 It is, Rob.
37:57 OK.
37:58 I love walleye.
38:00 Don't get me wrong.
38:01 I'm just saying don't knock the bottom feeders.
38:04 Yeah.
38:05 Shrimp's the bottom feeder.
38:06 By the way, we went to Rudy's 90% of the time.
38:09 Exactly.
38:10 We went 90% of the time to Rudy's.
38:12 I don't think we went to Joe Test.
38:14 I bet we went to Joe Test.
38:15 Nothing against it, but we liked Rudy's better.
38:17 And it was just a little hole in the wall.
38:19 20th and Missouri.
38:20 Man, I'm getting all these memories from your listeners tonight.
38:22 This is great stuff.
38:23 Oh, man.
38:24 And Omaha's awesome and Travis is in the top.
38:26 Catfish is good.
38:27 Catfish is a bottom feeder.
38:29 I like catfish, too.
38:30 Yeah.
38:31 You go out to the surf side now for catfish, right?
38:34 You go to the surf side for catfish, live music's chicken.
38:37 That's where you go.
38:39 Get the bread and honey up there.
38:42 Yeah.
38:42 You're missing out, Scott.
38:43 You're missing out on all the good times.
38:45 You need to come home every once in a while.
38:46 I do, man.
38:47 I keep talking about it and it's like football season, you know, and then basketball.
38:52 Monday, there's like 400 college basketball games.
38:55 I'm going to be watching football and studying basketball and doing my handicapping all day
39:00 long Saturday and Sunday, hopefully find three or four that win on Monday.
39:04 But they keep starting.
39:06 You know, it used to be great with college basketball guys because they would start around
39:09 November 15th and there'd be like eight games.
39:12 And now it's like every conference is in action and it's nuts.
39:14 But South Omaha, memory lane episode.
39:17 Yeah, they want to just do an episode all on South Omaha.
39:20 We can bring Chris--
39:22 Former--
39:22 I think Garrett nailed it right there.
39:24 That's awesome.
39:25 We can bring Chris Bober in and have a just go all memory lane on South Omaha.
39:31 Hey guys, if you--
39:32 Can we get like Bober and Remington in one night?
39:35 Oh yeah, because you know, Bober's a lot of--
39:37 That's a lot of pecker right there.
39:40 That's a lot of South O.
39:41 A lot of South O.
39:42 I got to ask Remington if you ever do a show of what I'm on with him.
39:46 When I was in high school, I was like a junior or a senior.
39:50 And of course, he was already in Lincoln playing for the Big Red.
39:53 And I had a kid who's claimed that Dave Remington's fiancee was his sister.
39:58 And I still got to figure out if that's true or not.
40:00 Or, you know, it was just, you know, I mean, Rob,
40:04 if you would have been playing in the 80s when I was in school,
40:07 I would have had 10 people at Bellevue West telling me they were your best friend
40:10 or they were your brother's best friend or everybody bragged about knowing a Huster back.
40:14 And if they did--
40:14 Dave's wife went to Bellevue East, didn't she, Rob?
40:17 I think so.
40:19 She's from Bellevue.
40:20 Yeah, she's a Bellevue kid.
40:22 Yeah, she's from Bellevue.
40:22 I went to school, he said his sister was like the fiancee of Remington back in the day or whatever.
40:27 And I was wondering--
40:28 I mean, she's from the area.
40:30 I mean, she's a Belle-- I know Bellevue, so.
40:32 Cool.
40:34 All right.
40:34 Oh, we're getting a call.
40:36 He might have been telling you the truth.
40:38 402-543-5556.
40:41 Let's go to Jim in Des Moines.
40:43 Jim, welcome to the Behind the Points Spreadshow.
40:46 What's going on?
40:47 Hey, Travis.
40:50 Hey, Rob.
40:52 Yeah, Nebraska, they might finally make it to a bowl game this year after 10 years.
40:57 So you're being a smartass, Jim.
40:59 No, I'm a Hawkeye fan.
41:03 Oh, do you think Kurt Theron has more power, or do you think the athletic director at Iowa has more power?
41:10 Right now, the athletic director at Iowa has more power.
41:12 Beth Getz has laid down the law.
41:15 And honestly, the fact that she's the-- the fact that Beth is--
41:20 He could have more-- but he could have more friends around there.
41:23 He may, but I'm--
41:25 He could get all the other--
41:26 All I'm saying is you don't make a move like that unless you know you had the backing of
41:31 the president and you had the backing of key boosters, and when you know you're probably
41:35 going to be the athletic director.
41:37 Kirk Ferentz is 68 years old.
41:40 He's been there for 25 years.
41:42 The run comes to an end sooner or later, and you saw it yesterday when she made the announcement.
41:48 She fired Brian Ferentz.
41:49 She made the call.
41:51 She said, "I'm the person in charge."
41:53 There's no doubt about it.
41:54 You don't do that if you're not the one in charge.
41:56 Or unless you're Steve Peterson.
42:00 Kirk Ferentz is like--
42:01 What's that, Jim?
42:06 What did Rob say?
42:09 I didn't hear him.
42:10 Oh, he said, "Unless you're Steve Peterson."
42:12 It's a Nebraska reference.
42:13 Oh, oh.
42:16 Rob, what does Nebraska and Curios have in common?
42:19 Tell me.
42:22 They don't belong in bowl games.
42:25 Ha!
42:26 Go Hawks.
42:27 Have a good night, guys.
42:28 See you, Jim.
42:28 I think the guy from Des Moines just blew the punchline.
42:31 It's they don't belong in bowls, not bowl games.
42:34 So come on.
42:35 I got it, though.
42:37 I got it.
42:37 It's an interesting thing about Beth Gates because I mean--
42:45 The fact that she's got the interim late tag on her--
42:49 She's going to get it.
42:50 She's going to get the full-time gig in probably December, January.
42:52 It's going to happen.
42:54 You're kind of the Hawkeye insider.
42:56 Is that kind of what you're hearing?
42:58 Yeah, that's going to happen.
42:59 It's going to happen.
42:59 Which I mean--
43:01 And she should.
43:01 It's a little bit of a baller move because I mean, kind of the--
43:07 kind of the thing for the last several years is that, I mean, Kirk runs the show there.
43:14 I mean, he's been damn near untouchable.
43:17 This is the first time I've seen--
43:19 I mean, the Chris Doyle thing was one thing.
43:22 That had to happen.
43:25 This is the first time I've seen it look like where Ferenc has been touchable.
43:32 He's definitely touchable because the offense is not getting any better.
43:40 It's regressed over the last three years.
43:42 The numbers that were-- the metric, the 25-point metric was stupid.
43:47 It should have been, hey, how many total yards are you averaging?
43:49 How many rushing yards are you averaging?
43:50 It was none of that.
43:51 25 points.
43:52 There's not a team in the Big Ten West averaging 25 points right now.
43:55 It was a dumb metric.
43:57 Although at the time you said it, it didn't seem like it was that hard to do.
44:01 Guess what?
44:03 It is.
44:03 Well, in the Big Ten West, it currently is.
44:07 Well, not many Big Ten East teams are doing it either.
44:09 I mean, it's-- but it's the right move.
44:14 He can't develop a quarterback.
44:15 First of all, let's start with the position that he coaches.
44:17 Brian Ferenc has had, what, a number of quarterbacks.
44:20 They haven't gotten better under his coaching.
44:23 And his play calling is suspect at best.
44:25 And the offense has just been downright anemic and downright horrible.
44:30 When you become a national punchline, when you become a national punchline,
44:34 you have no choice but to make a move to try to change the narrative.
44:38 So-- and when-- that's why you don't hire your son to be the offensive coordinator,
44:43 because nepotism rules go into place.
44:45 And he doesn't technically answer to the head coach.
44:48 So she said, you know what?
44:49 You answer to me, I'm going to fire you.
44:51 Here's the thing.
44:52 He is Iowa's Bill Callahan.
44:55 Brian Ferenc is?
44:58 Yeah.
44:58 Much like--
44:59 He's a great offensive line coach.
45:02 That's it.
45:04 Yeah.
45:05 That's it.
45:07 Now, Kirk Ferenc is like Iowa's Tom Osborne.
45:10 Sorry, Scott.
45:10 Why can't the Big Ten, outside of like three campuses-- Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State--
45:15 recruit a quarterback?
45:16 I mean, my gosh, the quality of quarterback play on the Big Ten,
45:20 it's got to be the worst ever, right?
45:21 Over the last three or four years?
45:23 I mean, outside of the main three schools that can, you know,
45:26 play for a top perennial, top 10 spot, it's just like, you look down the list,
45:31 and it's like, my gosh, nobody can pass the football with any,
45:34 you know, decent consistency game in, game out.
45:36 It's really shocking to me how badly the recruiting is when it comes to the QB position,
45:42 you know, for most of the Big Ten schools.
45:43 402-543-5556.
45:47 Let's go to Kyle.
45:48 Kyle, welcome to Behind the Points, Fred.
45:50 What's going on?
45:50 No, I just want to get your guys' opinion on Rocco Beck, actually.
45:58 Iowa State's quarterback.
46:01 So Rocco Beck, he's a Redshirt freshman, starting for Iowa State.
46:06 Iowa State's won three in a row now.
46:08 Has Kansas at home this weekend, Scott?
46:11 Yeah, I actually do like the cyclones here.
46:13 First bet I made this week when the Lions came out on Sunday,
46:15 myself and a few other guys.
46:17 After a combination of Iowa State playing better football of late.
46:21 Remember, the first couple of games of the year,
46:23 we were talking about the head coach at Iowa State.
46:25 All of a sudden, his, I guess, the luster was off, right?
46:29 And then all of a sudden, they've started to win football games again.
46:32 They're playing well on both sides of the line of scrimmage, for the most part.
46:35 And Kansas coming off that game where they acted like they won the national title,
46:39 and rightly so, I just think that this is an extremely tough spot for the Jayhawks.
46:45 And if your buddy, coach down at Lawrence, Kansas,
46:48 going to Ames, Iowa, can get his team's heads right and win this football game,
46:51 boy, that's a huge, huge other feather in his cap.
46:56 This is a tough spot for Kansas.
46:57 And we laid it right out of the blocks.
46:59 It was under three.
47:00 We jumped on it.
47:01 We moved it up to three, some three and a half, some books went to.
47:04 And we all said the same thing.
47:06 We got to do this Sunday night because this line's doing nothing but going up.
47:09 It's going to be a popular play.
47:10 I'm always worried and concerned about that.
47:12 But yeah, I like the look of Iowa State, what they're doing right now.
47:15 They're a really focused football team on what they got to do to beat teams each week.
47:19 - Thanks, Kyle.
47:21 Appreciate it, man.
47:22 - Yep, thank you.
47:24 - Yeah, and Beck has gotten better.
47:27 That offense is getting better.
47:28 It's not a great offense.
47:29 They're still, they're a little suspect,
47:31 but they're getting better as the season goes along.
47:34 And because they're playing, Rob, a lot like Nebraska.
47:37 They're playing a lot of freshmen, a lot of freshmen and sophomore.
47:40 - God, we talked about this.
47:43 Jeez, this was probably, what, six weeks ago after the Iowa State-Ohio game?
47:49 - Yep.
47:49 - I mean, I remember texting him just like, "Oh my God, did this really happen?"
47:55 - Yeah, it did.
47:57 - And you're like, "Their starting quarterback got suspended."
47:59 - Yep.
48:00 - Yep.
48:00 - I mean, you look at the other suspensions on the team.
48:03 And I mean, that was one of the points you made was about with the quarterback position.
48:07 That was gonna be the guy this year.
48:10 - Yep, yep.
48:11 And Beck comes in, slow start, but gradually getting better.
48:16 And this Iowa State team is getting better.
48:17 - He really has been.
48:18 And I mean, I have not been a Campbell fan.
48:23 - I don't know why.
48:24 The guy, he wins.
48:27 - I know, and this season might be what kind of maybe changes my opinion.
48:34 I mean, seeing him up against the wall with what he's had to work with post-suspensions,
48:41 it is kind of impressive.
48:44 - Yeah, early in the season, it looked like it was cell high time on Campbell.
48:48 - Oh, big time.
48:50 - You can't say that now.
48:52 I mean, they're buying into what he's doing.
48:55 They're getting better as the season progresses with a lot of young players,
48:58 as Travis mentioned.
48:59 And boy, this is a hell of a spot.
49:01 I mean, this is a prime spot to, and it's funny 'cause they'll say to pull an upset,
49:06 or they're gonna say on SportsCenter if they do win, upset and aims Iowa.
49:10 Iowa State, well, it's not an upset.
49:12 They're actually favored.
49:13 But this will be thought of as an upset.
49:16 It'll be a heck of a game if he can win it.
49:18 - The intriguing part, and it'll be a part of this show in a couple of weeks.
49:23 If they beat Kansas, Iowa State gets Texas at home.
49:26 And I think that could be a really, really interesting game
49:28 if Texas goes to, when Texas goes to Jack Tristan.
49:32 - We could get an Iowa State, Oklahoma State, big 12 title game.
49:37 (laughs)
49:37 I'm serious.
49:38 - Yeah, there's a four-way tie at the top right now, right?
49:43 - Yeah, if the Cowboys knock off the Sooners this week, if Iowa State beats Kansas,
49:47 I mean, watch out.
49:48 And then if Iowa State can handle Texas, I mean, all of a sudden, it's the Cyclones
49:52 and the Cowboys, just like we all thought before the season began.
49:54 - And nobody in the big 12 would be crying about Texas and Oklahoma getting left out
49:59 of the big 12 title game, that's for sure.
50:01 Hey, I want to tell you about the no sweat first bet offer.

50:49 Ironic part about this show, guys, is this, is we were moving right along.
50:54 We were going to have this puppy done in like 30 minutes.
50:58 Now we're at 50 minutes.
51:00 - We got phone calls.
51:01 - We got phone calls.
51:02 - We had phone calls.
51:02 It was great.
51:03 - We had a ton of interaction on the comments, and we went down memory lane in South Omaha.
51:10 - And I got to say one thing before we go.
51:12 Because I am a superstitious guy, and I did this last week and had my best football weekend
51:18 of the entire season last weekend.
51:20 I got to look up and say I'm watching the World Series game, and this time we're actually
51:24 watching it live.
51:24 That's my superstition.
51:26 And we had a fantastic weekend, so I got to do it again.
51:29 And I do believe in superstitions when it comes to gambling.
51:32 - For Scott Spreitzer and Dr. Rob Zanuska, I'm Travis Justice.
51:36 Thanks to Owen Justice for answering the phone calls tonight.
51:39 We will see you next Wednesday on Behind the Points, Fred, presented by BedFred Sports.
51:45 [MUSIC]
