00:00 Welcome to the WrestleTalk News, I'm Pete Quinnell.
00:08 It's Halloween, so I have dressed up as the scariest thing I know, Oli Davis.
00:14 Something something CM Punk.
00:15 But I'm actually not talking about CM Punk today, because instead our top story concerns
00:19 some potential backstage frustration over AEW's creative process.
00:23 While MGF vs Kenny Omega on Collision this past week has garnered huge praise for being
00:28 "rad", some criticism was levied at it for being booked with not much notice and
00:32 without much story playing out on TV beforehand.
00:34 This appears to be emblematic of a larger problem in AEW right now, as Dave Meltz has
00:38 noted on Wrestling Observer Radio some issues backstage currently.
00:42 If you follow AEW, you know that a lot of stuff is being decided at much later periods
00:46 than previous.
00:47 Guys are getting their information on what they're doing later, and decisions are being
00:50 made later.
00:51 There's times the day of the show sometimes you don't even know what the plans are.
00:55 It's almost, at times, like we used to talk about WWE, which is also very frustrating
00:59 for talent.
01:00 He went on to say that there's a lack of long-term directions right now, so while people
01:03 are coming up with week-to-week ideas, there's an uncertainty as to when the ultimate goal
01:07 of storylines is, if it's even been decided.
01:10 AEW backstage name Jerry Lynn then weighed in on X, defending Tony Khan and this later
01:15 decision making, saying, "Because wrestlers and God knows who else have and continue to
01:19 leak info to the sheets, podcasts, etc.
01:22 So Tony tries to keep things confidential.
01:23 You wouldn't want to know everything before you see a movie.
01:26 Anyone who leaks info is doing damage to the product and the industry."
01:29 There seems to be one potential AEW storyline and division that's suffering currently
01:33 because of this more last-minute decision making.
01:35 That being the direction for AEW Tag Champs Ricky Starks and Big Bill.
01:39 Dave Meltzer on Risk Observer Radio mentioned that the potential plan for Full Gear was
01:43 to do Starks and Bill vs. The Young Bucks, but that hadn't been confirmed or made official
01:47 yet.
01:48 It was just an idea that was thrown out.
01:49 Full Gear is two weeks away.
01:51 The Bucks became the number one contenders to the tag titles at WrestleDream on October
01:54 1st, but there hasn't been much follow-up to that since, with them instead defending
01:58 their Ring of Honor six-man titles.
01:59 Perhaps that creative frustration might sway Drew McIntyre's decision when his WWE contract
02:04 expires, as despite some rumours on X circulating that McIntyre had re-signed with the company,
02:08 Fightful Select has noted that this is not the case.
02:10 It wasn't confirmed whether or not Drew had been approached about re-signing, but
02:14 as of right now he reportedly hasn't re-signed.
02:16 Furthermore, his contract reportedly actually expires before WrestleMania 40 next year,
02:21 so even with Drew challenging for the World Heavyweight title this Saturday at Crown Jewel,
02:24 it seems his longer term future is uncertain right now.
02:27 Someone else's future that's uncertain right now is Will Ospreay, as it seems he
02:30 will be the hottest free agent in quite some time when his contract expires early next
02:35 year.
02:36 With potential moves to WWE, AEW, TNA or re-signing with New Japan, anything could happen.
02:40 Dave Meltzer mentioned on Wrestling Observer Radio one idea thrown around in WWE for Ospreay
02:44 should he join them.
02:45 One idea that was thrown at me was the idea of NXT Europe built around Will Ospreay.
02:50 Ha, NXT Europe, remember that?
02:52 Good times.
02:53 I'm sure that'll definitely launch at some point.
02:56 Also, putting Ospreay as the figurehead of NXT Europe would be as wasteful as, I don't
03:00 know, having Walter in NXT UK for several years instead of on the main roster.
03:03 Look, I know, there was more at play than just WWE's intent for Walter at that time,
03:07 but still, don't put Ospreay in NXT Europe.
03:10 Please.
03:11 Just for me.
03:12 Now, over to Luke.
03:14 Thank you for that excellent bit of news, we're going to do the Raw review in a moment,
03:17 but first it's time to hear about another potential match of the year candidate, so
03:21 please welcome the Head Lecturer of Wrestling at the University of Bedfordshire, Mark Markison.
03:28 Hello Luke, you're welcome at my lectures anytime if you ever want to become a real
03:32 wrestling fan.
03:33 This week's match of the year comes from Rev Pro's British J-Cup, Gabe Kidd challenging
03:37 for the Undisputed British Heavyweight Championship against Michael Oku, and let me tell you,
03:41 what Oku lacks in fantasy booking expertise he more than makes up for between the ropes.
03:45 Kidd took control in the early stages, playing mind games by targeting Amira, before brawling
03:50 with Oku in the crowd, but the champ fought back, showcasing the athleticism that's
03:54 made him one of the most exciting prospects in the Britwrest scene.
03:57 Kidd took back control, nearly getting the win after a Saito Suplex and a Brain Buster,
04:01 but after the ref was momentarily taken out, Amira got her vengeance by hitting Kidd with
04:05 a slap, which was just enough for Oku to sneak the win, just barely escaping with his title.
04:10 Now, I've had a couple of weeks off, and I've used that time to reflect and really
04:14 refocus my rating system to make something more fair, a more fair assessment.
04:19 So with that in mind, I have given this match 30 stars.
04:24 Thank you, Mark.
04:27 You're welcome.
04:29 That'll be all.
04:33 Nice to be fair.
04:34 Yeah, I'll see you again.
04:35 Oh, you will.
04:36 You will.
04:37 Good luck with the lectures.
04:39 You can come along if you like.
04:40 Oh, I won't.
04:41 I don't think you'll keep up.
04:42 I won't be there, Mark.
04:44 Actually, Mark, can I stop you for a second?
04:48 Yeah, can I just stop you for one second?
04:51 No reason in particular, it's just, it's Halloween, so, yeah, if you could just stop there for
04:58 a second, Mark, I just need a quick word.
05:00 Quick word with you!
05:02 There we go.
05:05 All right.
05:07 Well, you know, it's Halloween, isn't it?
05:14 So I've decided to dress like an absolute c-
05:16 I'm Mark Markerson, and now it's time for my review of Monday Night Raw, aka the
05:21 Tag Division Lives edition of Monday Night Raw, in about five minutes.
05:26 I'm actually Luke Owen.
05:27 The show opened with a Rhea Ripley promo, which was interrupted by Sami Zayn.
05:31 It's Groundhog Day.
05:32 Again, I cannot wait for Survivor Series for a small move past this.
05:37 He cut a fired up promo which set up a match between him and Damien Priest for the main
05:41 event.
05:42 Ricochet came down to even the odds, but also because he had a match with Dominik Mysterio
05:46 next - which he lost when JD McDonough and Rhea Ripley caused distractions and interference.
05:50 Ricochet acted like a spoilt child after the match, and was later told by Adam Pearce that
05:54 he could have an opportunity at Gunther's IC title.
05:56 I'm a big fan of video promos.
05:58 I think more wrestling companies should do them.
06:01 They show, rather than tell your audience, why wrestlers, tags, factions etc. are cool.
06:07 And they were used to great effect on this show because numerous talents got them - especially
06:12 to promote the Women's Fatal 5 wear crown jewel this weekend.
06:15 In no order, we got video promos for DIY, Raquel Rodriguez, Nia Jax, Candice LeRae,
06:19 Xia Li, Shayna Baszler, The Creed Brothers, Zoey Stark, Drew McIntyre and Rhea Ripley.
06:23 That's a total of 10 video promo packages covering 12 wrestlers.
06:29 It also really helps the 3 hour format because there's always something different to watch.
06:34 I mentioned The Creed Brothers in that list because they answered an Alpha Academy Open
06:38 Challenge on Twitter over the weekend, and according to Dave Meltzer, this was set to
06:42 be the official call-up for the team to Monday Night Raw - and presumably Ivy Nile as well
06:47 because she came out with her guys.
06:49 Chad Gable and Julius Creed did some wrestling!
06:53 Which was fantastic and far better than the rather stilted work between Otis and Brutus
06:58 who looked like they couldn't quite find their groove early doors.
07:00 They got on the same page by the end and had a terrific little tag match which saw The
07:04 Creed get the win over The Academy.
07:07 Looks like Chad and Co are back to their losing ways for the time being, but this was a tremendous
07:12 showcase for Julius and Brutus, and I hope that this is the start of a new era of tag
07:18 wrestling on Monday Night Raw which has been sorely missing since WrestleMania.
07:23 Damian Priest teased cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase this weekend as the
07:27 group again argued about who the real leader is, and then The Miz came out for a babyface
07:33 turn.
07:34 I've made my thoughts on The Miz clear over the last 6 years on this channel.
07:37 I think he's good.
07:38 I think he's a totally fine mid-card heel.
07:42 He's a professional, he rarely gets hurt which means he's reliable, and he's reliable
07:47 in the ring.
07:48 If you want a 3 star WWE TV match, you book The Miz.
07:51 And on very rare occasions, he'll turn up the dial and you'll get a nice 4 star match
07:55 out of him.
07:56 It's hard to take him seriously, at least for me, because he's so goofy.
08:01 And that's intentional.
08:02 He's a goofy mid-card heel who makes jokes about his balls and the size of said balls.
08:08 But because of that, I personally tend not to buy into "serious Miz" when he's
08:14 trying to be "serious I'm a Grand Slam Champion Miz" etc.
08:18 Which is a nice dichotomy when he's face to face with Gunther, who is the total opposite.
08:23 He's also reliable, but he's reliable to give you 4.5 star matches in his sleep,
08:29 and he very often turns up that dial to give you all time classics.
08:33 He's never goofy.
08:35 He is always serious.
08:37 You always take him, his promos, and his in-ring work seriously.
08:42 He's made the IC title feel like something special and important.
08:47 He is, for me, a much bigger, better and more credible champ than our current World Heavyweight
08:53 Champion.
08:54 And he pointed all of this out to The Miz, who tried to fire back with "serious Miz",
08:59 but Imperium beat him up and sent him packing.
09:01 Miz later complained to Adam Pearce backstage, and Pearce booked him in a match with Bronson
09:05 Reed for a shot at Gunther next week, and later Ivar and Ricochet were added to that
09:09 to make it a fatal four way.
09:10 Babyface Miz has never, ever worked in the past week.
09:15 We all remember that Ric Flair run, don't we?
09:18 But let's see how this one goes under Trips' creative.
09:21 At the very least he'll be in the ring with Gunther, so it will at the very least be a
09:25 good match.
09:26 DIY beat Imperium in a fun little tag, and Shinsuke Nakamura cut a promo asking for his
09:30 next challenger to show himself, CM Punk, WWE Return confirmed.
09:33 Candice LeRae, or Candice Michelle as Michael Cole called her, had her match with Xia Li
09:37 stopped by the ref when Lee knocked her out, playing off a real concussion that Xia Li
09:41 gave Mercedes Martinez back in NXT.
09:44 She later wanted her match with Becky Lynch, but on her own time.
09:47 Mate, she's lost the NXT Women's Champion.
09:50 You missed your opportunity.
09:53 The Drew McIntyre promo was fantastic, and so much better than the one by Seth Rollins
09:58 who was attacked by JD McDonough.
09:59 Seth beat him with the stomp and challenged Priest to cash in.
10:02 Michael Cole said that Seth Rollins was struggling to keep up with this breakneck pace that he's
10:07 keeping up as champion.
10:08 This was his first match on Raw since August, and his first singles TV match since July.
10:13 That is hardly a breakneck pace.
10:16 Chelsea Green shockingly picked up her win when she dressed as Bret Hart to beat Natalya
10:19 - who I think was dressed as the Bunny from AEW - in a trick or street fight that was
10:23 your usual Halloween plunder fun.
10:25 And the main event of Priest vs. Zayn went to a double DQ when The Judgment Day ran in,
10:30 and Jey Uso ran in.
10:32 It's Groundhog Day again.
10:34 Cody Randhans evened the odds again and gave McDonough the crossroads on the table.
10:39 He got a promo on Priest, and that was the show.
10:41 It was a really fun time, good wrestling especially in the tag division, and they did a good job
10:45 hyping up several wrestlers with video packages.
10:47 I'm over the Judgment Day stuff, but this week's Raw is still a solid 3 out of 5.
10:53 Tomorrow is November and if you want to know about all the biggest movies released next
10:57 month, check out myself and Mark Marks and lookalike Dan Layton on the latest episode
11:01 of What's On at Cineworld Cinemas.
11:03 I also eat nachos quite loudly at Dan, so watch it for that at the very least.
11:08 Thank you very much, we'll see you tomorrow.
