Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes should add players at NFL trade deadline.
Transcript
00:00 John, the Lions should clearly be buyers at the October 31 NFL trade deadline.
00:05 What kind of moves do you see for the Lions as they near that deadline?
00:09 Yeah, Vito, it's going to be real interesting.
00:11 The Lions are going to face the Raiders on Monday night football with an opportunity to start the first half 6-2.
00:17 I think that would present a lot of positivity, a lot of hope for the Lions.
00:21 But I do think, and I hope the coaching staff really looks at closely, the film of not the wins, but the two losses this year.
00:29 Against Seattle and against the Ravens.
00:32 Two games in which you were not able to get pressure and two games in which your defensive backs were torched.
00:39 And I think when you look at collectively, in those two games, it indicates you need probably one more defensive lineman to complement Aiden Hutchinson.
00:49 I think if you take the pressure off of him, his sack total numbers will go through the roof.
00:53 And if you can add one more cornerback, you saw unfortunately Jerry Jacobs get hurt on Saturday and then unfortunately ruled out for Sunday.
01:03 And that just threw everything out of whack and caused the Lions defense to play one of their worst games of the season.
01:09 I think the focus for Brad Holmes should be on defense.
01:13 But if you do turn to the other side of the football, I think that the concerning play of Jamison Williams, who just hasn't been consistent in regards to his role in this offense.
01:24 I mean, you can't have a football game in which you go out there and record no receptions.
01:28 So I think that if you can get another sure-handed receiver that can be that reliable deep threat, then you go out and you pursue that.
01:36 But I think the focus should be more on the defense.
01:39 Maybe you look to teams like the Panthers, Vikings, the Broncos, teams that could be mathematically eliminated that could potentially, you could have and find players that you could plug in that are versatile and contribute.
01:53 But I do think this football team is good enough to add one or two pieces.
01:57 Could they make the big splash? Chase Young type of thing, Patrick Sertan of the Broncos.
02:03 I'm not seeing the big splash because I think the Lions have always taken the long-term view, but I do think they could find maybe middle-of-the-road veterans that can come in and be reliable.
02:13 I would be all for a big splash. That would be great in terms of getting this football team over the edge and maybe even getting to the NFC title game and beyond.
02:20 But I think Brad Holmes tends to be a little bit more conservative in his approach.
02:26 I think there will be moves made, but I'm not so certain they're going to be for high-end talent.
02:30 I think they might end up moving on from day two and day three picks as opposed to giving up first-rounders for talent.
02:37 I think this is a good football team on its own, but boy, if they were to be able to add a couple more pieces, then the likelihood of playoff success just goes up.
02:45 In my opinion, Brad Holmes, let's go shopping. It's time. It's a trade deadline. Time to improve this Lions roster.
02:51 Brad, make a blockbuster move. Good for the team and good for all Lions too. We know that, John.
02:57 John, thanks for all the time.
02:58 all the time.
