Bonfire Night and Diwali are approaching, which means some nights will be going off with a bang very shortly. We asked the Sheffield public if they would want to see the sale of fireworks banned in supermarkets - or even if they would want to see displays banned altogether?

00:00 It's Alastair from the Sheffield Star. We're out here speaking to people about fireworks.
00:04 We were asking people if they think they should be banned at every level,
00:06 or if it's something that can be just left alone as it is. I don't know if you've got
00:10 any thoughts on fireworks display each year? Do you think they're upsetting?
00:12 I think fireworks display is a really good idea, and rather than having their own
00:17 in their own garden or their own houses, I think it would be better if they were banned
00:20 in food markets, people should generally have them, and every council have a fireworks display
00:26 open to everybody, free of charge, and perhaps let them go to their safe garden.
00:31 What about them being sold in supermarkets and stores upset you, or it doesn't agree with you?
00:36 It doesn't really upset me, but I don't think it's a particularly good idea,
00:38 because it's better to go to a council run fireworks display.
00:42 What do you think?
00:44 Well I think it's like, they're more like a time for all my friends to get together,
00:48 so I would like to go to one, but I wouldn't buy one in supermarkets because I don't trust myself,
00:54 I'd definitely do something stupid with them.
00:56 Do you have any plans for Bonfire Night this year?
00:59 I don't, just because I live in the city, so there's not many places where you can go,
01:04 there's not many open spaces, and plus loads of people are banning them,
01:09 so you can't really go to them anymore.
01:10 So I think because Diwali is celebrated at the same time, which is a lovely festival,
01:17 but particularly in London it feels like it goes on for about a month,
01:22 finally with Bonfire Night.
01:23 Getting into the night as well.
01:24 Yeah.
01:24 You do enjoy the displays though?
01:26 Yeah, I really enjoy the public displays that they put on,
01:30 and also yeah, as a family it's a special time,
01:34 just to get together and see the fireworks.
01:37 Make it that one night a year kind of thing.
01:39 Yeah.
01:40 Organised, got the fences, yeah.
01:41 Something to look forward to.
01:42 Do you have any plans for Bonfire Night this year?
01:45 Yeah, well my daughter's school putting on a display, so we're going to go there.
01:50 We're going to a big public display in London, Happy Watch.
