Winning cars pass the finish line for The World Solar Challenge in Adelaide

The sun has set on this year's world solar challenge, with the Belgian team charging past the rest of the competition.

00:00 With the winning team from Belgium it took them 34 hours 4 minutes and 41 seconds to
00:07 travel more than 3000 kilometers all the way from Darwin to right here in the heart of
00:12 Adelaide.
00:13 It is the second time that the Belgium team have won in a row, last winning in 2019.
00:19 Two Dutch teams came in in second and third position while an American team came in at
00:24 fourth place.
00:25 There are two categories in the Solar World Challenge, one is the Challenger class that
00:30 is a purely solar car.
00:33 The Cruiser class has both a solar and electric element to it.
00:39 We are expecting to see cars trickle in right throughout today and into tomorrow as well.
00:45 Cars do have to finish by Saturday evening to be able to consider themselves finishes
00:52 in this class.
00:53 There were 37 cars that were due to start the race, about 7 of those cars haven't passed
00:59 scrutiny so they weren't actually able to start the race.
01:02 So heartbreaking especially for those who have come all the way from overseas.
01:07 We are expecting to see a Japanese team to be the first car finished today.
01:13 Expecting that team to cross the line any time from about 9.30 central time onwards.
01:21 The conditions though, the teams have been thrown plenty of challenges.
01:25 It does get up to about 50 degrees inside the cockpit of these cars so excruciating
01:30 heat while driving.
01:32 Drivers do have cooler packs on them.
01:35 There have been also bushfires that they've had to navigate through.
01:41 But all in all it has been a very successful year.
01:44 The Belgians are licking their lips and still celebrating this morning.
01:48 While the Aussies, we are a chance of winning the Cruiser class today.
