00:00AFL stars and their partners have hit the red carpet ahead of the league's most prestigious
00:07individual award, the Brownlow Medal.
00:10This year's count is tipped to be one of the tightest in recent memory.
00:13Tom Maddox is on the red carpet in Melbourne.
00:15Tom, who are the main contenders?
00:17Well Lydia, if you put the faith in the football pundits, tonight's count will be a four-horse
00:22race between two previous winners and two vying to win their first medal.
00:27Patrick Cripps, the Carlton star who won the Brownlow a couple of years ago, has had
00:30a dominant season, has been really important to the Blues, pushing into the finals.
00:35And then the Collingwood maestro Nick Dacos, at the age of just 21, could win his first
00:41Brownlow Medal, of course, after being a hot favourite to win it last year.
00:46And then Western Bulldogs' Marcus Bontempele, a bit of a fan favourite, a sentimental choice
00:52if you like, tonight, a long-been a star of the AFL but never a Brownlow Medalist.
00:57And then, of course, you can't doubt the Brisbane champion in Lachie Neal, who would become
01:02just the fifth man in the AFL to win three Brownlow Medals.
01:07The last time we had a tie, Lydia, was 2003 when Nathan Buckley, Adam Goodes and Mark
01:12Rusciuto won in a three-way contest.
01:14We could see that tonight.
01:15Of course, Sydney Swans star Isaac Heaney had such an outstanding year, but it's the best
01:21and fairest award, and the fairest he's struck out on that note, because he was suspended,
01:27of course, Lydia, for one game earlier this season, so we won't see Isaac Heaney winning
01:31the Brownlow this year, despite such a dominant season.
01:34Of course, his swans, they're preparing to arrive in Melbourne later this week, ahead
01:38of the grand final against Brisbane on Saturday, Lydia.
01:41Tom Maddox reporting there, thank you.
