00:00 Today what we're looking for is a couple things.
00:02 The car's just gotta grab you,
00:03 and then once it does that, if the story's good,
00:06 we're handing out three different awards,
00:08 and one car is gonna be turned
00:10 into an actual packaged Hot Wheel.
00:12 (upbeat music)
00:14 Hi there, I'm Johnny Lieberman.
00:23 I'm here in El Segundo, California
00:25 at the Hot Wheels Legends Tour.
00:28 The crazy part, somebody made a terrible mistake,
00:30 and I'm one of the judges.
00:32 There are hundreds of cars here.
00:33 They're all super cool.
00:35 Let's go take a look at 'em.
00:37 (upbeat music)
00:39 Are you a Hot Wheels girl?
00:50 - Yes.
00:50 - How many Hot Wheel cars do you have?
00:52 - I don't know.
00:52 - You don't know, wow.
00:54 Paxton knows, he's got over a thousand.
00:55 - Well she's--
00:56 - If you marry him and divorce him,
00:57 you could get half his car.
00:58 (laughing)
01:00 - As a parent, all I do now is play with Hot Wheels,
01:03 so it's kinda great.
01:04 It's cool to actually see someone build something,
01:06 so we're looking for like the garage spirit,
01:09 as Hot Wheels calls it.
01:10 I wanna see something I haven't seen before.
01:12 That's huge for me, and there's a bunch here.
01:15 There's at least three cars that are just like
01:17 vehicles I've never seen anywhere else,
01:19 so that's super cool.
01:20 One time there was a stink bug crawling
01:23 on the sidewalk in front of him,
01:25 and I was like, that looks like my car,
01:27 so he got the name Stinky.
01:28 Obviously a lot of modifications,
01:30 lot of flames, lays on the ground,
01:33 gets a lot of attention, and kids like to play with it.
01:36 - I've always enjoyed the Bosozoku style,
01:38 which was an old Japanese style in like the 70s,
01:42 early 80s, I mean just the wide over flares.
01:44 Everything that they've done is from the Group 5 racers.
01:47 It was just about like the big wheels,
01:49 the big flares, the wild exhaust.
01:51 Me and my wife, we didn't have any previous knowledge
01:54 as to how to do body work, how to do glass work.
01:56 It's been about staying true to the style,
01:59 but still bringing my own influence into it.
02:01 - We kinda had different versions.
02:04 We kinda took a pool among some friends,
02:06 and we came up with the Nash Hole.
02:08 We exposed the wheels and tires,
02:09 put a small block Chevy in it.
02:11 - The floor pan has been cut out
02:12 and replaced with all new sheet metal.
02:14 - I think it's also very cool for my children
02:16 to kinda see dad and friends do cool stuff
02:19 and be able to kinda be a part of events like this,
02:21 basically.
02:22 - It's not just about a car show.
02:24 Every legend stopped, really through the support
02:26 of our great sponsors.
02:28 You can actually win a life-size Hot Wheels Camaro
02:31 through Mobile One.
02:33 This is a real, drivable, 50th anniversary Chevy Camaro.
02:38 All of us judges are wearing Dickies,
02:40 the premier work shirt and work wear company.
02:44 Of course, they had to dress
02:45 the Hot Wheels Legends judges.
02:48 Mechanics, we mentioned, is out here with an event
02:50 so you can go and see how fast you can change wheels.
02:53 The other 17 stops are all made possible
02:57 because of our number one retailer in the world
03:00 for Hot Wheels, and that's Walmart.
03:02 (upbeat music)
03:04 - All right, so what'd you guys think?
03:15 - Well, pretty tough field.
03:16 Paxton, what do you think?
03:17 - I think the beach, the--
03:19 - Yeah, the Mad Max, it has like a V6 turbo engine.
03:23 It took him like three or four years
03:24 to build the entire thing.
03:26 It's really cool 'cause it has to touch spikes
03:28 and a lot of tools hanging from it.
03:30 - It's hard to argue against spikes.
03:32 Let's not forget the 1980 Cressida.
03:35 - Well, the Cressida's pretty bad as a whole.
03:36 - With the splitter, with the pipes.
03:38 - He didn't know how to do any body work,
03:40 so he learned himself on that.
03:41 Built it, she painted it, and you--
03:43 - You can use it when a husband and wife builds up,
03:45 one of them winds up dead, you know, so.
03:48 - Of all of the Legends tours,
03:49 I think that this one probably had the biggest brain.
03:52 I mean, talk about changing the personality of a car.
03:55 - 'Cause every Hot Wheels should have you say,
03:58 "Is that street legal?
03:59 "Can you do that?"
04:00 You know, to me, the Nash symbolizes that.
04:03 - Yeah, that is great.
04:04 - The Nash is a full-size Hot Wheel variety.
04:06 You don't even have to build it.
04:07 - All right, guys, that was a great deliberation.
04:09 Tough as always, well done.
04:12 - How we doing, El Segundo?
04:14 All right.
04:16 So as Chris said, this was a really hard decision
04:18 thanks to all the judges up here
04:19 and thanks again to the design team.
04:21 It was not an easy choice, but when it came down to it,
04:25 we unanimously picked it as the winner.
04:27 So I'm super proud to welcome to the stage
04:29 Greg Salzillo, Dave Ford, for the 1957 Nash Metropolitan.
04:34 (audience cheering)
04:37 - When we figured out the route
04:40 we were gonna go with this build,
04:42 we knew we wanted it to be completely different
04:44 than anything else across the country.
04:46 It took us about six months from the time we bought the car
04:49 to the time we actually started building.
04:51 It's got a small block Chevy 305 in it
04:54 with a turbo 350 transmission.
04:56 Rear end is a GM 12-volt out of a 73 Chevrolet pickup.
05:00 Front end would then be a straight axle
05:02 that we took, cut, and widened about eight inches.
05:06 - The air cleaners, the dice, are made out of 18-gauge steel
05:09 and we formed them and bent them
05:11 and used a hole punch to punch out all the dots.
05:13 The reason we named it Nash Hole
05:15 is because Greg was getting beat up so much
05:18 he rather than cuss at it, he called it
05:21 the Nash Hole, you dang Nash Hole.
05:25 - Anywhere we go, we're getting attention.
05:27 We're putting kids in and out,
05:28 letting them take pictures all day long.
05:30 And we want them to have fun
05:32 and appreciate it just like we do.
05:34 It's something that two friends were in a garage and built.
05:37 And for us to kind of get that bond
05:39 and be able to go up on the stage together
05:40 and be told that something we built in a garage
05:43 are going to the world's largest automotive trade show,
05:46 is a pretty special moment for sure.
05:48 You're going to Vegas, baby.
05:49 (audience cheers)
05:52 - Thank you to the judges, thank you to the sponsors,
05:54 and thank you to the community.
05:56 (upbeat music)
