Dan Lanning discusses a 38-24 win over the Washington State Cougars.
Transcript
00:00 >> It was a battle, I still don't feel like we played a full game.
00:04 At this point how we finished there in the fourth, but
00:06 I thought there was some big momentum swings.
00:08 Some big fourth down stops, some big runs from our offense and
00:11 a lot of battling down the field.
00:12 What I feel is our team plays for each other and
00:15 you really saw that today the way those guys competed.
00:17 Washington State had a good plan.
00:19 They came in and they executed and their quarterback's a special player, but
00:22 so is ours and I think that showed up today.
00:25 >> All the way in the back on the left, Trevor.
00:28 >> Three touchdowns for Bucky.
00:30 If you were going to describe the way he plays the game of football to someone that
00:33 had never seen him, what would you say?
00:34 >> I'd say his heart's pounding out of his chest, right?
00:37 This dude's so passionate.
00:38 He cares so much for his teammates.
00:40 Never goes down on first contact.
00:43 Really selfless player.
00:44 And I think that shows up when you watch this guy play on the field.
00:47 >> On the right middle, Greg.
00:48 >> Yeah, sticking with Bucky, those two plays he had in the third quarter,
00:52 I'm sure you've been on both sides of plays like that in your career.
00:56 How demoralizing are those two at defense when you go back to back 40 yard
00:59 touchdowns?
01:00 >> Yes, it's huge.
01:02 And when you can be explosive in the run game,
01:03 it sets up everything for you in the passing game.
01:05 Later on, even though they were able to stay on top of some shots,
01:08 we were able to check it down and create some big plays as well.
01:11 But runs and passes, Bucky's proven to be a good player for us across the board and
01:16 I'm really proud of his performance today.
01:17 >> All right, next one, Al.
01:18 >> Justin made his Oregon debut today, picked up a sack.
01:24 What, obviously you haven't seen the film yet, but just from the sidelines,
01:26 what did you make of just his first game action this year?
01:29 >> Yeah, some good, some bad.
01:30 I think he'd tell you the same thing.
01:31 But the guy plays hard, he loves football.
01:33 I'm glad to see him out there and healthy and competing and
01:35 he certainly makes us a better team when we can use him.
01:38 >> Front right, Zach.
01:40 >> Overall, the offensive line play I think was pretty solid.
01:42 I know there's some penalties you wanna clean up, but
01:43 what do you make of their performance today?
01:45 >> Yeah, and just looking at it from what I saw today,
01:48 obviously I don't watch the film yet, but I thought we moved bodies.
01:50 And that's where it starts, when you can move bodies up front,
01:52 create some big runs, you have some backs that run hard.
01:55 I think that sets up for success.
01:56 They also did a good job protecting the quarterback.
01:58 Bo held it for a little bit back there at times, looking for
02:00 stuff to extend and they battled.
02:02 Certainly wanna clean up the penalties.
02:04 There's a couple of those that really hurt us.
02:05 >> All the way in the back, Matt.
02:06 >> You touched on some things to clean up.
02:11 Just what do you attribute the, I don't know if it's maybe a slow start,
02:13 cuz you did move the football in the first half, but just not finishing drives.
02:17 What do you attribute to that?
02:18 >> Yeah, we got stymied a couple times there on drives and
02:21 even coming out right out of half.
02:24 We moved the ball and then again, same thing.
02:26 So we have to clean that up.
02:29 I have to look at the film to be able to give you a good answer of why.
02:32 But ultimately, I think we'll get that taken care of.
02:35 >> Second row right here.
02:36 >> Yeah, Trekway's obviously got the start at corner.
02:40 But was that a product of kind of what he did at Washington last week and
02:44 what he didn't practice this week?
02:45 Or is it more so just Jalil being a little dinged up?
02:48 >> It's a product of the work we do every single week.
02:50 Every single week in practice, every practice matters, every play matters,
02:54 right, and he's proven that he can be a player that can play for us, right?
02:57 Obviously, we played a couple guys back there today.
02:59 And when you have multiple guys can play, it gives you a chance.
03:02 Now, I'll say this, we can play better, right, than what we did.
03:05 And I think we'll watch the film and we'll see some of that.
03:08 Not speaking towards Trekway, I'm speaking towards our entire team.
03:11 So we're gonna find out where the warts were and how we can go attack them.
03:15 >> Are you front left, James?
03:19 You were able to get to Bucky in the passing game against them last year.
03:22 Arizona had a lot of success with it last week.
03:24 What did you see heading into this one that you could point out and say, all right,
03:28 we can get the ball to him through the passing game.
03:30 He can be really effective like he was.
03:32 >> Yeah, just we knew there were some shots, like I said,
03:34 that we wanna be able to take.
03:35 And we felt like if the shots were covered,
03:36 that our check downs were available.
03:38 And I think that's probably where he saw the majority of his passing yards today.
03:41 I know he had a couple out of empty where he was the uncovered option.
03:45 But ultimately, that's generally the rule with shots.
03:48 If there's somebody on the back, then the quarterback's legs are alive.
03:51 If there's nobody on the back, then you have the check down available.
03:53 >> Middle left, Bill.
03:54 >> Hey, Dan, when you say his heart's beating out of his chest regarding
03:59 with Bucky, what are the qualities that you're describing there that maybe we
04:02 don't see in games?
04:04 >> Yeah, I don't know that anybody wants this team to be more successful than
04:08 Bucky Irving, right?
04:09 He cares about his team.
04:10 He cares about his teammates.
04:11 He loves hard.
04:12 This guy, I won't go into detail about his backstory.
04:16 But the adversity that this guy's faced, for him to be the remarkable young man that
04:20 he is, is really impressive.
04:22 And I have three sons.
04:24 I hope my sons can grow up and be like Bucky Irving.
04:26 >> We got Rob, right next to him.
04:30 >> You talked a couple different times this week after practices about just kind
04:34 of intensity in terms of response to last week's result.
04:37 Now you've got the whole week under your belt, this game under your belt.
04:39 Just how do you describe the way your group kind of rallied back from last
04:41 week's result?
04:42 >> Yeah, I think they came out and they took a team's best punch.
04:45 Washington State played really hard today too.
04:48 And they had some big moments within that game.
04:50 I don't think our guys ever got rattled.
04:52 They stayed focused in the moment.
04:53 And that's really what playing great football is about, is being one play focus.
04:57 But I know this, there's a lot of things that we wanna get right and
05:00 I think we can do better.
05:01 I know the quality of players we have in that room.
05:03 We have to go execute at a higher level moving forward.
