Desert Labrador Retriever Rescue 25th Anniversary!
Desert Labrador Retriever Rescue (DLRR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to finding life-long homes for displaced Labrador Retrievers. The rescue provides medical care and/or rehabilitation for DLRR dogs and matches them with appropriate, permanent homes. DLRR also provides Labrador Retriever breed and training information on request. Through public education, DLRR strives to help eliminate animal overpopulation by requiring the spaying and neutering of pets. 00:02 So October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and adopting a loving pet from a shelter
00:08 is so important.
00:09 I'm trying to get through this intro, but I can't because Cooper is so cute.
00:13 We have Desert Labrador Retriever Rescue here to talk about why you should adopt a dog this
00:18 month.
00:19 So Patricia, you are one of the many volunteers there at DLRR.
00:22 So tell us a little bit about the history behind what you guys do.
00:25 You know, we've been around since 1999, and we are celebrating our 25th anniversary next
00:30 week.
00:31 We rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome some great labs throughout all of Arizona.
00:37 I love that.
00:38 And your 25th anniversary, is it this year or next year?
00:41 Next year, 2024.
00:42 Next year.
00:43 Okay, great.
00:44 But you guys are still celebrating this year.
00:45 We're starting the celebration already.
00:46 I love it.
00:47 And we've rescued over 6,000 dogs since we've been...
00:51 So it's great, yeah.
00:52 Absolutely.
00:53 And you guys are doing your Corks and Collars event.
00:55 Yes, Corks and Collars is coming up on Saturday, November 4th at Hunkoppy Farms in Scottsdale.
01:01 It's our big fundraiser where we raise money for our medical expenses for all of our dogs,
01:08 like Cooper.
01:09 As you can see, he's got a wrap on his foot.
01:11 He had to have surgery, so before he's adopted out, we are taking care of any medical needs
01:16 that our dogs have.
01:18 So we need to raise money.
01:20 We spent last year about $250,000.
01:21 Oh my goodness.
01:23 On medical expenses.
01:24 Wow.
01:25 So, yeah.
01:26 Yeah, because we were talking earlier about the fact that you get dogs kind of from multiple
01:30 different areas, from the other shelters in town.
01:33 People just kind of call you guys and you come in and you save the day, like with Cooper
01:38 here.
01:39 Hey, Cooper.
01:40 Hey, come here, baby.
01:41 Oh, good boy.
01:43 And yeah, so when they have issues that they need to get taken care of, you guys go in,
01:47 take care of those right away, and then put the dogs up for adoption.
01:50 Yeah, we get all of the vaccinations updated.
01:53 We will do any surgeries that need to take place, take care of any medical issues the
01:57 dog has.
01:58 Sometimes we get dogs in with diabetes and we need to get that under control.
02:02 Oh, wow.
02:03 Yeah.
02:04 Also, heartworm.
02:05 They may need surgeries.
02:06 We have a dog in that had to have hip surgery.
02:09 So yeah, we get all that taken care of before we adopt them out.
02:12 Make them healthy.
02:13 I love that.
02:14 So, how do people go about getting involved?
02:17 Obviously, you have your fundraiser coming up, but what other ways can people get involved
02:21 with you?
02:22 There are so many ways for the volunteers to get involved.
02:25 The primary thing is to be a foster because we don't have a physical facility.
02:31 All of our dogs go into foster homes.
02:34 So it's homes just like yours and mine where they get to just be a family member.
02:40 I love it.
02:41 They get used to being there.
02:43 They get ready to be adopted out.
02:44 It's kind of the first step in the next part of their adoption story.
02:49 Absolutely.
02:50 Really, really cool.
02:51 Yeah.
02:52 So anybody who wants to get involved, there's so many other ways that you can get involved.
02:55 You can be Lab Cab.
02:56 We need people to take the dogs to medical appointments or do intakes for dogs.
03:04 We've got so many ways to get involved.
03:07 Very cool.
03:08 And so, I already have a couple people asking about Cooper himself.
03:12 Yeah.
03:13 Cooper's a great dog.
03:14 Is he up for adoption?
03:15 He is.
03:16 He's available for adoption.
03:17 He's ready for his forever home.
03:19 He has come to us because the family was just too busy to take care of him.
03:24 So he spent most of his time in a kennel, in a crate, and we don't want him to have
03:29 that kind of life.
03:30 He's a very active dog.
03:31 Absolutely.
03:32 Loves his ball, as you can see.
03:34 He's just waiting for that ball to be thrown.
03:37 He is.
03:38 He's such a good boy.
03:39 He's pretty big, too.
03:40 He's a pretty big guy.
03:41 He is.
03:42 Yeah.
03:43 He could have some Great Dane in him, but he's got that Lab personality where he's
03:47 just fun and definitely devoted.
03:50 I love it.
