00:00 We're kicking it old school.
00:01 On this episode of Roadkill, we're
00:03 bringing back two of your favorite project cars.
00:05 And proving that pro driver Randy Popes
00:08 is no match for Roadkill.
00:12 Good distance.
00:13 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:38 This time we're going to revive two old Roadkill project cars.
00:42 The first one is the car known as the Draguar.
00:46 It's a 1974 Jaguar XJ12L.
00:50 But it no longer has that V12 in it.
00:52 No, this thing is stuffed with a small block Chevy.
00:55 And what we did a long time ago is we flew up to San Francisco,
00:58 bought the car for $1,000, took that junky old small block
01:02 Chevy, and put a wind 671 supercharger on it
01:06 with predictable results.
01:07 This thing overheated so bad, we ended up
01:10 running it through car washes just to keep it cool.
01:13 And in the end, there was pretty much nothing
01:15 but a molten mass of lava left where that small block
01:18 Chevy used to be.
01:20 So we got a bigger, better engine.
01:22 Out came the 350, in went a 383 stroker motor
01:26 from Blueprint Engines that made 640-ish horsepower at 10 pounds
01:30 a boost, which was enough to rip the right rear control
01:34 arm right out of the rusty sheet metal in the Draguar
01:36 and almost put it in the wall the first time
01:39 I drove it at the drag strip.
01:40 Oh, god, that's scary.
01:46 The second car we're digging out of mothballs
01:48 is the Ratsan, our 1971 Datsun 240Z, which
01:53 has a long and sordid history.
01:55 Before we took delivery of the Ratsan,
01:57 we had White Flag Racing install a 4.3 liter Chevy V6
02:01 and five-speed trans out of a Chevy S10 that we sent them.
02:04 Once we got our mitts on it, we did the only sensible thing
02:07 we could.
02:08 We built our own turbo kit out of junkyard parts.
02:10 We swapped a diesel turbo off a Ford Powerstroke
02:14 onto the 4.3, added a carburetor to blow through,
02:17 and when we were done, we had almost 300 horsepower
02:20 at the wheels and no alignment on the suspension.
02:23 So this thing was a handful.
02:26 The Ratsan is my personal favorite roadkill car
02:29 because it hauls ass.
02:30 Freiburger doesn't like it as much as I do
02:33 because it's constantly breaking.
02:34 The last time I drove this car, which was a year ago,
02:37 I could swear I heard the rods knocking.
02:39 So I have no idea what to expect when we try
02:41 to get this thing running again.
02:43 So you ask yourself, what are these guys
02:46 doing with these two legendary pieces of roadkill engineering?
02:50 Well, if you think about it, roadkill
02:52 is a spin-off of two magazines, Hot Rod and Motor Trend.
02:56 And while we've done challenges with Motor Trend in the past,
02:58 we've never gone head to head with their most accomplished
03:01 test driver, Randy Popst.
03:03 And so that's exactly what we're going
03:05 to do with our fine European luxury car
03:08 and our high-end Japanese sports car.
03:11 I know that we would disappoint you
03:18 if we were actually prepared for this challenge.
03:20 So what you're about to see is us
03:22 driving the Dragwar for the first time in forever.
03:25 I actually miss this car.
03:26 It's pretty good.
03:28 I love this car.
03:29 I would drive this everywhere.
03:31 There's the Car Craft guys digging the Dragwar.
03:35 I think we should fix the trans, because that's
03:37 a big problem with it right now.
03:38 And maybe that waxing, which is crazy talk.
03:41 I'm only in the driveway, and I can tell you
03:43 that the brakes are garbage.
03:46 What's the pulling situation?
03:47 Oh, pretty good.
03:48 See that?
03:49 Yeah.
03:50 If you're sitting at a stoplight,
03:51 and you got your foot on the brakes like right now,
03:53 you'll start to roll, because the pressure just goes away,
03:56 and your foot starts to sink.
03:58 But is it fast still?
04:02 That doesn't feel that fast.
04:03 It went 12s?
04:05 It went 12.50.
04:06 It pulls really hard on the top end,
04:08 but it doesn't accelerate well.
04:11 It gets lots of wheel speed, though, right?
04:15 How did it not even spin the tires?
04:17 I don't know.
04:18 Yeah, the transmission doesn't leave in first.
04:21 Oh, that's what it was.
04:22 I had that problem with the Dragster, too.
04:24 It took off in second.
04:25 Might need some squirter.
04:31 Yeah, maybe a little bit.
04:33 Oh, there we go.
04:34 There we go.
04:36 That's much better.
04:37 That's two stripes back there.
04:39 Yep.
04:39 OK, so when we get back in, I say brakes first,
04:42 because it could be really hard to find parts.
04:45 Then transmission.
04:46 Then tune up on the road.
04:48 All right.
04:49 I'm in.
04:50 You're down?
04:51 Let's do this.
04:52 That's pretty good.
05:00 That's pretty good.
05:03 Ah, smells like burned rubber.
05:05 It's my cologne.
05:07 This is the perfect opportunity for our sponsor, EBC Brakes,
05:10 because they're from England.
05:12 In case you hadn't noticed, so is the Jaguar.
05:14 EBC set us up with their GD Series sport rotors,
05:17 and we're going to use the yellow stuffed pads, which
05:20 are meant for endurance racing.
05:21 And we're going to punish them, because I think this garbage
05:24 weighs like 5,000 pounds.
05:25 When we hit the Dragster with the Jaguar
05:27 and its new small block, we still
05:29 had the old transmission in the car that
05:31 was in it when we bought it.
05:32 And it was a huge mess.
05:34 We're solving that with a brand new training
05:36 from TCI, which is a Turbo 350 that includes TCI's 9-inch drag
05:40 converter.
05:42 This isn't a great match for our highway gears
05:44 that are in the rear end, but at least now we
05:47 have a transmission that will grab every gear without
05:49 slipping, which is a huge step forward in terms
05:52 of performance for the Jaguar.
05:58 We were supposed to be heading down to get to Rotsen,
06:00 and we're driving the Jaguar, which we just
06:02 put a new transmission in it.
06:04 We just fixed a leak on it yesterday,
06:06 and we're down the street probably a block from our shop,
06:09 and it is puking ATF absolutely everywhere.
06:11 You can see the trail that we left coming in.
06:13 I don't know what we're going to do next.
06:15 Either we'll drive it back to the shop,
06:16 or we may have to trailer it a block back to the shop.
06:20 You know what?
06:20 We shouldn't do that, because if we're
06:21 in the middle of the desert, we'd have to fix this, right?
06:24 So we'll just fix it right here, or not.
06:28 The arm for the shift linkage looks
06:30 like the nut's backing itself off, and it's sloppy.
06:33 So I think when we shift it into first or park,
06:35 it's not actually going into that gear.
06:37 It might be in between gears.
06:38 So we'll fix that.
06:43 We could still go through the car wash and get that done.
06:45 I mean--
06:45 You could get stuck in the car wash.
06:46 I don't want to work on a dirty car.
06:48 All right.
06:49 Yep.
06:50 This is a bad idea.
06:53 You know what?
06:53 Here's my theory.
06:54 The car wash is going to fix the transmission.
06:56 OK.
06:57 [LAUGHTER]
06:59 Flashback to good times.
07:01 Yeah.
07:02 What do you mean?
07:02 It was hot out the last time we did this.
07:04 It's not hot now.
07:04 That's true.
07:05 [MUSIC PLAYING]
07:08 Drag war is going to look good.
07:09 Shiny.
07:11 I should have paid for the spray on wax.
07:14 You should have got the rainbow soap and the undercarriage
07:18 detailing.
07:19 Yeah, bubble gum flavor.
07:21 It'd go right over the blower.
07:24 Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
07:28 Mission's off.
07:29 You can do nothing to me now.
07:30 [ENGINE REVVING]
07:33 [MUSIC PLAYING]
07:39 It smoked when we were on it.
07:43 I wonder if it's pumping fluid out.
07:47 What if it's seeking its own level and just healing?
07:50 Maybe it's healed now.
07:52 [ENGINE REVVING]
07:54 That was weird.
07:57 That didn't run good.
07:58 Oh, yeah.
07:58 We're smoking.
08:00 We're James Bond.
08:01 Oh, yeah.
08:02 This is a good, nice, warm flashback feel-good episode,
08:05 because this is like General Mayhem right now.
08:08 Well, right now we have three gears, though.
08:10 Yeah.
08:11 We should be careful not to leave a giant puddle
08:13 outside the shop.
08:14 [MUSIC PLAYING]
08:20 Oh, look at that.
08:24 That is bad.
08:26 Wow.
08:27 This is epic, even for roadkill.
08:30 [MUSIC PLAYING]
08:33 [BUZZER]
08:40 Yeah, there's the problem.
08:44 Where?
08:45 The whole thing is out.
08:46 Ah, well, that would explain it.
08:48 That is the speedometer cable, which was never hooked up,
08:51 but the adapter was in place here in the transmission.
08:55 It's no longer there, which is why all the fluid is pumping
08:58 out of there, onto here, onto the exhaust, onto the street,
09:01 onto the shop floor, onto my pride.
09:08 Because the drag war hasn't punished us enough today,
09:11 right when we're ready to leave, the battery dies.
09:15 If you saw the last episode of Roadkill,
09:16 then you'll remember that we drove approximately six
09:19 to eight hours and only got two miles from our hotel
09:22 in the Monte Carlo.
09:23 Today feels about the same.
09:25 We've been here since 7 AM.
09:26 It's about 2 in the afternoon, and we're just now leaving.
09:30 We're going to rip out our crappy old lead acid battery
09:32 and put in a brand new Optima.
09:34 Actually, I don't even think it's a new one.
09:36 I think it's one of those adoptables, where
09:38 people that don't understand how to charge one, mail it back
09:40 to Optima, they recharge it, and then they send it to us.
09:43 [MUSIC PLAYING]
09:45 Ooh, adoptable saves the day.
09:48 [MUSIC PLAYING]
09:51 We've never been here before, but apparently there's
10:05 a storage lot somewhere out here in Orange County
10:07 that has a whole lot of cast-off Roadkill cars.
10:09 Yeah, this is our company's lot, and guys
10:11 have shuffled our cars down here,
10:13 and we've never seen them.
10:14 And apparently the Ratson's here.
10:16 So this is going to be the first time we've seen a few
10:17 of these cars in a long time.
10:19 Yeah.
10:19 [MUSIC PLAYING]
10:23 There's the stock car.
10:24 Tires are a little flat.
10:25 We bought this.
10:26 Never been on an episode, because the lawyers
10:28 won't let us drive it.
10:29 On the street.
10:30 Which is a shame.
10:31 Oh, wow.
10:32 Was it always like this?
10:33 No, somebody hit it.
10:34 Somebody hit it.
10:35 That's great.
10:35 We have schemes for this car about every month
10:38 when we try and decide what to do.
10:40 Yeah, every month when we go, oh, no, what are we
10:42 going to do for this episode?
10:43 I immediately go to, we have the stock car.
10:46 Our original plan was to buy this
10:47 and see how far we could drive it on a city street
10:49 before it got impounded.
10:51 And then the lawyers got involved.
10:53 The Ronchero.
10:56 There's no seats in the Ratson.
10:57 And the vet card is a rusty mess.
11:00 What a shame.
11:01 These things were inside and apparently in the way,
11:04 so they got shoved out here.
11:05 We haven't seen them in a while.
11:07 I think we're disappointing fans right now.
11:09 Where did the seats go?
11:10 They're right there.
11:12 Oh.
11:13 I guess our main goal is actually
11:14 to find out if we can even make this run.
11:16 At least they covered up the hater pipe.
11:18 Yeah.
11:20 So the deal with this is that the last time we saw the Datsun,
11:24 we were doing the episode where we did the big shootout
11:27 in the old abandoned neighborhood.
11:29 And we had given this thing to one of our production
11:31 assistants to drive out onto this runway we were shooting.
11:34 And it was like a 20 minute drive from where we took off
11:37 all the way out to the runway.
11:38 When we get there, there's no belt on the water pump.
11:42 So this thing was literally running for who knows.
11:44 There's still no belt on the water pump.
11:45 15 or 20 minutes, there's still no belt on it
11:48 with no water flow.
11:49 That's like the worst thing that you can do to a motor.
11:52 We gave up on it at that point.
11:54 Did you think it had a rod knock?
11:55 I heard something.
11:57 But the fact is we really don't know.
11:59 And so this is our first time experiencing it again.
12:01 We're going to try and get it running and find out
12:03 if it'll actually go up to willow.
12:05 There's no way that battery is any good.
12:07 No, that battery is going to be junk.
12:09 This is the fuel pump.
12:11 Is it?
12:12 I think so.
12:14 Yep, there we go.
12:15 Got weight, fuel's coming.
12:17 We got a leak.
12:18 Oh, we do?
12:19 Yeah.
12:20 Both needles and seats stuck.
12:21 (clicking)
12:24 (engine rumbling)
12:28 Fine.
12:40 (engine rumbling)
12:43 She may live again.
12:46 All right, let's put water in it.
12:48 We need a belt too.
12:49 And a belt.
12:50 I wonder if it's not going to do anything.
12:51 (upbeat music)
12:53 In this episode, we have two vehicles
12:55 with forward-facing hoods, which is just inherently wrong
12:57 because they both fall on you like this and kill you.
13:01 Dragwar and Rotson, both decapitators.
13:05 We brought a fan belt because we knew we were missing one.
13:07 And of course it was the wrong size.
13:09 So we go to the parts store, buy 15 more,
13:11 and number seven was the winner.
13:14 I'm having the time of my life.
13:15 Best day at work ever.
13:16 (laughing)
13:18 Did we make this?
13:19 'Cause this is pretty embarrassing.
13:21 Yeah, yeah, we made that.
13:22 Yeah?
13:23 You know what makes it not embarrassing?
13:25 It puts boost in the motor.
13:28 It does when there's duct tape.
13:29 (laughing)
13:30 This was all on a straight line originally.
13:33 This is true.
13:34 And then when it leaked, we sent it somewhere
13:36 and they did this and now it's no longer in a straight line.
13:39 But let's just review why did it leak?
13:41 'Cause we installed it wrong.
13:42 Right.
13:43 (laughing)
13:44 But it was wrong in a straight line.
13:46 It leaked oil, not boost.
13:47 It was stylishly wrong, I'll give you that.
13:48 It leaked oil, not boost.
13:50 Now it leaks boost, which is unacceptable.
13:52 Way worse, yeah.
13:53 The world knows we're fine with leaking oil.
13:56 So we've got seats in the car,
13:57 a water pump belt that's at least temporarily installed,
14:00 a boost leak that's solved with duct tape,
14:02 and a connecting rod that may or may not
14:05 be falling out of the engine.
14:06 Now what you wanna do in that situation
14:08 is roll the car carefully out into the street
14:11 and go straight to wide open throttle.
14:12 (engine revving)
14:15 This is the best noise I've heard in a long time.
14:19 (engine revving)
14:21 (laughing)
14:25 Yes!
14:27 It works.
14:28 I'm claiming victory already.
14:30 (engine revving)
14:33 (laughing)
14:35 It's everything you remember and more.
14:38 Be careful, the seat's not bolted down.
14:40 You can't reach the clutch, you can't reach the brakes.
14:42 The door flies open, there's a clunking sound.
14:44 Brakes are a little sketchy, but it has power.
14:47 It's like hair trigger.
14:48 You like mad at it, it's like,
14:50 bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump.
14:51 (screaming)
14:53 It's really good.
14:54 (engine revving)
14:58 I'm actually pretty stoked.
15:01 I thought this thing was just complete junk.
15:03 He was telling me it had like a rod knock or something.
15:06 There's none of that.
15:07 (engine revving)
15:10 Right?
15:12 - Oh, it's dangerous.
15:12 - Right?
15:13 - It's great.
15:14 - There's nothing wrong with it.
15:17 It overheated, it cooled off, it's fine.
15:19 - It's indestructible.
15:21 (engine revving)
15:23 - Finally, we've got the Dragwar and the Ratsan
15:30 together at Willow Springs International Raceway's
15:33 Horse Thief Mile, where we're gonna go head to head
15:36 with a special guest.
15:38 If you followed Motor Trend shows at all,
15:40 you know Randy Popest.
15:42 This is the guy who they stab into any car,
15:45 put him on any track, anywhere in the country,
15:47 and bam, he sets the fastest lap time ever for that car.
15:50 He's that good.
15:51 The guy even won the 24 Hours of Daytona.
15:55 But what he really wants to do with his life
15:58 is guest star on Roadkill.
16:00 - I love the parts coming through the hood.
16:02 I gotta tell ya.
16:03 - Yeah.
16:04 - We're big on aerodynamics here.
16:05 - You've seen these on Roadkill, right?
16:07 - I have, every episode, I love it.
16:09 I saw the Dragwar just about kill Finnegan
16:11 on the first run down the drag strip.
16:13 - That's right, well, here's the good news.
16:15 That extreme pull to the left when you get on the brakes,
16:17 that hasn't gone away.
16:18 - It'll have good corner entry to the left.
16:20 - That's exactly right.
16:21 The front end is pretty trash.
16:23 It has brand new EBC brakes.
16:24 It has the Hoosier slicks.
16:26 - Wow.
16:27 - Brand new TCI trans.
16:28 - This motor on the dyno on full boost
16:31 made almost 700 horsepower.
16:33 - I'm in awe.
16:35 - And the front suspension is mounted on a cradle
16:38 that is mounted with rubber bushings to the chassis.
16:40 - Oh yeah, it's crazy.
16:41 - Those are original.
16:42 So every time you let off the throttle,
16:44 the whole front suspension just does this.
16:45 - Yeah.
16:46 - Oh, it's amazing.
16:48 - Well, you know what?
16:49 I grew up with cars like this with about 600 less horsepower.
16:52 So I'm all in.
16:54 I love the hood ornament.
16:56 He's just trying not to get sucked into that blower.
16:58 - Exactly.
16:59 - Finally, someone mentioned it.
17:00 We've destroyed our fair share of engines on Roadkill.
17:03 We were good at this,
17:05 but I really had high hopes that I'd get to drive the Rats
17:07 and fast for once until I pushed the start button.
17:11 Oh, that's bad.
17:13 See, the key is you want to wait
17:25 until you actually have a pro race car driver
17:27 and a rented racetrack before you kind of
17:29 troubleshoot these things.
17:30 - Test your car.
17:31 - Okay, forget everything I said
17:33 about us actually driving the Rats into this episode.
17:36 New plan.
17:37 We're all going to hop in the Dragwar
17:39 and take some laps with Randy, sort of learn the track.
17:41 And then we're going to do a shootout
17:42 with each of us in that car,
17:44 but we still have a plan to beat Randy.
17:47 We can do it.
17:48 Get ready to be spoiled.
17:50 - Welcome.
17:51 - Sheepskin.
17:52 - Lap of luxury.
17:53 - Your sheepskin makes me a little nervous
17:55 with Freiburger behind me.
17:56 - I'm just saying.
17:57 I can't see where I'm going when I turn a little bit right.
18:01 - That's our advantage.
18:02 I'll let you know when to turn in.
18:04 - Oh, contact.
18:06 I love the supercharger whine.
18:11 That is sweet.
18:12 Oh yeah.
18:14 It's pulling left, Finn.
18:18 - Just turn more right.
18:19 - Freiburger, I hope you didn't have too much breakfast.
18:21 - I was going to say.
18:22 - Now this corner is completely obscured
18:26 by the supercharger.
18:27 - Use the force.
18:29 Yeah.
18:32 - Whoa.
18:37 Now we got to stop too.
18:40 - Yeah, engine dies under heavy braking as well.
18:45 - Oh boy.
18:50 - Hey, Freiburger, the tires are excellent.
18:56 - Good.
18:56 - Yeah, you can still spin them.
19:04 - All right, how about we do some time trials?
19:06 I think you're warmed up enough.
19:08 - I think the brakes are too.
19:10 I think we're machining aluminum somewhere.
19:12 Oh yeah, check it out.
19:14 - Really?
19:15 - I did not make this up.
19:17 - Oh, wow.
19:19 - I was seeing little pieces of shaved aluminum
19:22 as we went around the track.
19:24 - What did you do?
19:26 - Oh, it's the tie rod end.
19:28 - Oh yeah.
19:30 - Oh, that'll buff out.
19:31 - Seems fine.
19:35 - Self machining, what about the other side?
19:36 - How about the other side, yeah.
19:38 - Who ordered the wheels?
19:39 - Yeah, that's my fault.
19:40 - That's the question.
19:41 - So what do you think?
19:43 - I think we can get a lap in.
19:45 - Yeah, we'll just take it easy.
19:46 - I like your optimism.
19:47 - Oh yeah.
19:48 - You know, you really owe it to yourself
19:49 to do a big gnarly burnout right here.
19:51 - Oh, could I?
19:53 - Oh yeah.
19:53 - Really?
19:54 - Yeah.
19:55 - You're gonna give me the front wheels?
19:57 I'm in awe.
19:59 It's a combination of respect for the power
20:03 that's been magically inserted into this old car
20:07 and a combination of fear for my life, pretty much.
20:12 But this is what I do and I'm gonna give it all I've got.
20:19 (car engine roaring)
20:24 (laughing)
20:26 - Oh yeah, I like that part.
20:30 (laughing)
20:31 - I think Randy might have a little trepidation
20:33 about the Dragwar.
20:34 I don't think he's quite fallen in love with it.
20:38 All right, I'm gonna go here, ready?
20:42 Then again.
20:46 (laughing)
20:47 - I can't see to the right, people.
20:51 (laughing)
20:54 We got a lot of power, I'll tell you that.
20:56 Woo!
21:00 Whoa, down boy, sit, down boy.
21:04 Okay, into the hairpins.
21:07 Ah, downhill braking.
21:13 I still have brakes, but I don't know for how long.
21:16 - It's like the queen is out road racing.
21:20 It looks very presidential.
21:22 - Whoa, I think he's losing his, look up.
21:28 Whoa, side out.
21:30 Down boy, sit.
21:34 I think I got about two more good hard stops.
21:37 (laughing)
21:41 The last corner, please God, let it end.
21:44 Oh, brake pedal's soft.
21:49 (engine revving)
21:52 109.08.
21:55 - Wow!
21:57 That's something, thank you Roadkill.
22:02 Never again.
22:05 - Pretty impressive, right?
22:07 - Woo!
22:07 That was bloody exciting.
22:11 - You did some more machining.
22:12 - Yeah.
22:13 - I'm glad it's over.
22:14 - Really?
22:15 - Engine runs great.
22:17 - Except for when it's burbling and bogging.
22:19 - Except it dies downhill.
22:20 - Yeah.
22:21 - You'll have to look out for that.
22:22 - If we drop the float level, we can fix that.
22:24 - I think the brake fluid was starting to boil.
22:26 - Oh really?
22:27 - I did get around there with some brakes,
22:31 and then on the next lap, it was pretty soft.
22:34 - Yeah.
22:35 - So from the look of it, I think our issue
22:38 is brake fluid boiling more than it is fade.
22:41 - Uh-huh.
22:41 - So you're saying it's ready for him to go.
22:44 - Keep that in mind.
22:45 - Perfect for me, right?
22:46 - I'll be going around in idle.
22:49 You're instilling a good level of fear in me.
22:51 - Here's the roadkill norm.
22:52 You want to put the nicest new goodies you can
22:55 on the worst possible car,
22:56 and then not install them correctly.
22:58 What happened here is we didn't get all the air
23:00 out of the brake system, and when that happens,
23:02 the brake fluid will boil,
23:04 losing all brake system effectiveness,
23:06 and making those nice, shiny EBC rotors and pads
23:10 essentially useless.
23:11 - Few roadkill cars ever last very long.
23:14 The fact that this one's still running
23:15 after Randy beat on it out there,
23:17 gives me hope that someday I'll get to drive it,
23:21 'cause that doesn't always happen.
23:23 (laughs)
23:25 Now it's my turn to find out if I can either
23:26 humiliate myself or suffer a punishing death
23:29 in the drag war.
23:30 All right, now be smooth, look ahead,
23:33 gas in hard, brake early.
23:36 - I can't help but notice that you're not
23:38 in the passenger seat actually guiding me.
23:40 (laughs)
23:41 - I survived my step, and I'm out.
23:43 - You're done.
23:44 (laughs)
23:46 - Where'd he go?
24:00 - It stopped.
24:01 - Where did he go?
24:01 - Never Neverland.
24:02 - This track has so many blind, over the rise turns,
24:07 down hills, it's pretty spooky.
24:10 There we go, he's on it.
24:12 (engine revving)
24:15 - All right.
24:16 - He's got less of a survival instinct than I do.
24:20 Did you see it wiggle when he got on the brakes?
24:35 You can see it from here.
24:36 He's doing a great job so far.
24:39 Whoa, whoa, whoa.
24:41 (engine revving)
24:43 (laughs)
24:52 Wow, that's a good finish.
24:57 - All right, you beat him by five seconds.
25:00 - Ooh, only five seconds?
25:01 (laughs)
25:02 - Only five seconds.
25:03 - Man, don't tell my race team.
25:04 - It's a one mile track, that seems like a lot.
25:09 (engine revving)
25:12 - Really, that's just a game of self preservation.
25:16 The brakes boiled before my lap.
25:19 - Oh, did they?
25:19 - Yes.
25:20 - No.
25:21 - They're gone.
25:22 - Whoa.
25:23 - Nada.
25:24 - I guess I can't race.
25:24 - That's why you brought it in so easy.
25:26 - Yeah.
25:28 - You did a great job out there, Fryburger.
25:30 - I sensed the facetious tone.
25:32 - No, especially right through here,
25:34 the start and the finish was dramatic.
25:37 - Was it?
25:38 - Actually, I was a little bit afraid for you.
25:39 - Really?
25:40 - And you did fine.
25:41 - Yeah, you were fast.
25:43 - You were fast.
25:43 - Why, what was the time?
25:45 - 113.26.
25:46 - Oh.
25:48 - Respectable.
25:49 - Yeah.
25:49 All that really matters is that it's not overheating.
25:53 That's a victory.
25:54 - Yeah, I gotta be honest,
25:55 if it never went around again, I'd be fine.
25:57 It didn't overheat.
25:58 The hood is on.
25:59 - Exactly.
26:00 - We built a great car.
26:01 - Well, now that I've got the brake fluid good and boiling,
26:04 let's go ahead and give the keys to Finnegan.
26:06 - All right, let's kick this pig.
26:08 All right.
26:26 Don't die.
26:28 I can't see anything around the blower.
26:36 He's going for it, but you had a better start.
26:38 - Really?
26:38 - Oh yeah, you were impressive through here, Freiberger.
26:41 - Looks like more speed than I thought I had.
26:51 - Sounded almost like a downshift.
26:52 Oh!
26:58 (laughing)
27:00 - When I said apex late, you took it to heart.
27:07 - Yeah, exactly.
27:08 - Oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah!
27:12 - Show it off for the camera.
27:13 - Big sideways.
27:14 - Well, I don't know how fast that was,
27:21 but I'm still alive.
27:22 - 115.88.
27:23 - 115.88, I saw it.
27:25 Woo-hoo-hoo!
27:27 Yeah!
27:28 In the dirt.
27:39 - Well, if you're gonna be slow,
27:40 you might as well be flashy.
27:42 Finnegan got kind of shafted with the boiling brake fluid,
27:45 and as a result, he did end up
27:46 with the slowest time of the day.
27:48 - How slow was that?
27:49 - 115.88.
27:52 - Not bad.
27:55 - The brakes are bad.
27:56 - Yeah.
27:57 - You had to know going in
28:02 that Randy was gonna outrun us in the Dragwar.
28:04 He's a pro race car driver, we're not,
28:06 but we brought a handicap,
28:08 which is this car, a '93 Jaguar XJ6.
28:12 It has 223 horsepower, no blower,
28:15 no road race tires, no EBC brakes.
28:17 So the question is, can Randy outrun the Dragwar
28:22 in this bone stock piece of junk?
28:24 (engine revving)
28:27 - EFI, huh?
28:30 (laughs)
28:31 - Power brake it.
28:32 (engine revving)
28:35 I think you're finna get it.
28:36 Oh, wait, yeah!
28:38 (engine revving)
28:40 - Wait, it's just one.
28:47 Back up, that doesn't count.
28:49 (engine revving)
28:51 (laughs)
28:53 - I got off the road.
29:00 (laughs)
29:02 (laughs)
29:08 - You're gonna die, Holmes.
29:14 All right, that's all the hot sauce I can give you.
29:16 Now it's all up to your skill, sir.
29:18 - Thanks, friend.
29:20 (engine revving)
29:23 (laughs)
29:30 - God, once it's out of the sauce,
29:32 there's just nothing there.
29:33 - Nothing.
29:33 - Oh, there's something wet seeping up through the seat.
29:37 - Oh!
29:37 - Oh!
29:38 - Hemorrhoids!
29:40 (laughs)
29:41 Yuck!
29:42 - It's probably just water, right, I hope?
29:44 - It's only water.
29:45 - You're just saying that.
29:47 (laughs)
29:48 - Wow, that's disgusting.
29:50 - Oh, it's doing it!
29:52 - The reverse burnout!
29:54 - Wow!
29:55 (engine revving)
29:57 - Yeah!
30:02 - All right!
30:03 (laughs)
30:05 - It's faster here.
30:06 - Yeah.
30:07 - He's not lifting.
30:08 - Randy's out on track,
30:10 and that XJ6 is actually looking pretty balanced.
30:14 I mean, he is setting this thing up,
30:15 tapping the brakes, getting it sideways.
30:17 I'm blown away that it's not even bogging off the apex.
30:21 It's not looking good for us in the drag war.
30:23 This thing's hauling, but in the end, bam!
30:26 He runs a 113.98, which is three quarters of a second
30:31 slower than my time in the drag war.
30:33 And that is the narrow margin of victory
30:36 that Roadkill was counting on.
30:37 - Woo!
30:38 That was exciting!
30:39 - 113.98.
30:41 - No kidding.
30:42 - Yeah, so.
30:42 - Ah, shoot!
30:43 - Yep, you were faster in the drag war.
30:45 - You beat me!
30:45 - I beat you in the drag war.
30:47 - Yep.
30:48 - This was an unbiased and honest representation
30:50 of both vehicles.
30:51 (laughing)
30:52 And we won.
30:52 - That's why we called him the expert, you know?
30:54 Absolutely no bias.
30:56 Tell it like it is, Motor Trend Quality.
30:59 - That was fun.
31:00 - One last thing, head to head.
31:04 Finnegan in the drag war,
31:05 Randy and myself in the bone stalker.
31:08 And the good news here is Finnegan hasn't got
31:10 a whole lot of Hoosier left after those donuts.
31:15 (engine revving)
31:18 - And I have no traction.
31:22 - And now we're gonna absolutely run away from him.
31:25 - Yeah!
31:25 - I picked the right car to ride in.
31:29 - And I can't see.
31:31 Thanks, blower.
31:32 - I expected much more understeer out of this thing.
31:44 - Yeah, no, it doesn't push.
31:46 - Come on, engine.
31:48 - Oh, nice.
31:56 - Wow.
31:57 - I wish I could drive.
31:58 (laughing)
32:00 - He's smoking the tires.
32:06 - Either I can't drive or the drag war just won't hook.
32:09 And I don't care anymore.
32:10 I'm just gonna fry tires until they pop.
32:13 (engine revving)
32:15 - Oh, that's good entertainment.
32:16 (laughing)
32:19 (laughing)
32:28 - Uh oh.
32:39 (rock music)
32:42 (laughing)
32:50 - That was good.
32:54 - I might have a flat tire.
32:55 - What was really the point of this episode of Roadkill?
33:00 Well, you know what?
33:01 Sometimes we do things for our entertainment,
33:03 not so much for yours.
33:04 And we've always wanted to thrash on these cars again.
33:07 We've always wanted to go head to head with Randy Popes.
33:09 And ultimately, we've always wanted to beat him on the track
33:12 and we did it.
33:14 We may have lost to Randy with a fair fight,
33:17 drag war to drag war.
33:18 We may have even lost to him in a wheel to wheel shootout,
33:21 but we did manage to reduce Randy Popes to our level.
33:25 Once we were able to level the playing field
33:27 by giving Randy a third of the horsepower
33:30 and half of the tire grip,
33:32 we were able to barely squeak out a victory
33:35 and we make the rules, so we're calling it a win.
33:38 End of story, end of episode.
33:40 (car engine roaring)
33:43 - Whoops, I'm sorry.
33:50 Can't see.
33:51 - That's not your car.
33:53 - Just look into the camera and just tell the editor,
33:56 say, "Editor's note, my audio is on the Zoom."
33:59 - Editor's note, my audio is on the Zoom.
34:04 (laughing)
34:06 - Tell you what people, this is more exciting
34:10 than Le Mans, Daytona and Sebring all combined.
34:14 Oh, woo.
34:16 - Did you torque him to spec?
34:20 - Yup.
34:23 - Did that sound like the correct spec to you?
34:24 - Oh yeah.
34:25 - Okay.
34:26 - Spec spec is, there.
34:30 - The whole thing is out.
34:31 - Ah, well, that would explain it.
34:33 - That's really hideous.
34:34 - Yup.
34:37 - Okay, now that we know, I'm gonna go poop.
34:39 - Where did it go?
34:40 - Yeah, you signed up for some potential humiliation.
34:43 What happened if we actually outran you in this garbage?
34:46 You were thinking just mathematical improbability?
34:49 - I thought the odds were pretty good.
34:50 - Yeah.
34:51 - I'm not a gambling man.
34:53 - Bop, bop, bop, bop, bop, bop.
34:55 (screaming)
34:57 [BLANK_AUDIO]
