00:00 On this episode of Roadkill, Finnegan's going to have,
00:03 yet again, his best day at work.
00:06 Damn right.
00:06 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:10 [TIRES SCREECHING]
00:13 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:17 [CRASHING]
00:29 You know, on Roadkill, we've pretty much proven
00:33 that we can do anything.
00:34 And somehow, it entertains somebody,
00:36 even when we diss Lamborghinis.
00:38 And so when we ran out of time to do an actual good show
00:40 this time, we decided to go with "Gratuitous Violence."
00:44 This will be the best show ever.
00:45 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:48 [CRASHING]
00:50 We needed a couple of parts cars for project vehicles
00:52 that we're working on in the magazine.
00:54 I was looking for a small block Chrysler
00:56 and an automatic transmission for it.
00:58 And then we also needed a full-size GM chassis
01:01 for a body drop project that we want to do.
01:03 Fryburger's a busy guy, so he gave me
01:05 the job of finding the cars.
01:07 And the two cars I picked were dirt cheap.
01:10 One was an '87 Buick Electra station wagon,
01:13 the one that seats nine people with the seat in the back that
01:16 faces the wrong way so kids can yell at cars behind them.
01:19 And the other one was a 1993 Dodge Ram conversion van.
01:22 We decided to have some competitions with them.
01:24 Before you see it, I just want you to pick one.
01:27 The one on the left or the one on the right?
01:28 Left.
01:29 OK.
01:30 OK.
01:30 Oh, I see a van.
01:33 Oh, I choked.
01:33 I should have gone right.
01:34 What's on the left?
01:36 Wagon!
01:37 Oh, dude, this is just like the Pontiac I
01:39 had when I was a teenager.
01:40 I own this.
01:41 I've been in every dirt road in Southern California
01:44 in one of these.
01:45 This is mint.
01:46 The headliner's not even falling out of it.
01:48 Dude, I'm keeping this.
01:49 Everything works, even the cruise control.
01:51 It seats nine.
01:52 We can't ruin this car.
01:53 This is better than my daily driver.
01:55 Hey, check the horn.
01:58 Train horn.
01:59 Very familiar.
02:00 It has a 700R4 in it, dude.
02:01 It has overdrive.
02:02 Is this how many volts will be allowed?
02:03 Or is it--
02:04 307.
02:04 307 volts?
02:05 Yep.
02:06 Yeah, in the Buick.
02:07 It makes a whopping 140 horsepower,
02:09 and this thing weighs 4,300 pounds.
02:11 Oh, I don't care.
02:12 I can throw this thing around like no tomorrow.
02:14 You choked.
02:14 Show me the van, though.
02:16 You ready for this?
02:18 Porno van.
02:19 Check it out.
02:22 Captain's chairs, the rear couch folds into a bed.
02:25 It's got a TV, a VCR.
02:27 It's got a lot of DNA.
02:28 Supposedly 220 horsepower back in the day.
02:33 This is over 5,000 pounds.
02:35 This could not be more perfect.
02:36 This is awesome.
02:37 Are you ready?
02:39 Bonk.
02:39 Nice.
02:40 [MIMICS CAR ENGINE]
02:41 I feel like I'm in Vegas.
02:43 Oh, this is going to be genius.
02:44 Let's get to it.
02:45 The first thing I think we should do
02:47 is drag race him to see who's actually got more power.
02:50 I think I'm going to lose that one, but whatever.
02:54 I'm going to run into him right now.
02:57 Oh, this thing has a built-in motor mount.
03:01 I normally have a lot of respect for old cars.
03:04 The idea of bashing on these was kind of bugging me.
03:07 But the truth is, conversion vans are worthless.
03:10 We would have never done anything with them.
03:12 Yeah, baby.
03:14 And the Buick wasn't as good as it looks.
03:15 And it won't pass smog, which in California makes it worthless.
03:18 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:23 OK, here's the deal.
03:24 I'm going to honk three times.
03:25 On the third one, go.
03:27 And the first one through those two cones wins.
03:30 Your mother.
03:31 [HONKING]
03:35 Come on, van.
03:38 See ya.
03:42 Dude, I want one more lap.
03:49 I guarantee you don't get there before I do.
03:52 I got something special.
03:53 Are you going to neutral slam it?
03:55 Hell yeah.
03:57 Ready?
03:58 [HONKING]
04:01 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:05 I pulled the only move a cheap SOB would.
04:14 I pit maneuvered him so he couldn't finish the race.
04:17 Oh, not cool.
04:19 If you don't finish, you can't win.
04:27 There's no better feeling in life than watching your boss loop out a car
04:30 after you've crashed into him on purpose.
04:33 I don't think that's going to buff out.
04:35 [LAUGHTER]
04:37 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:41 The magazine has a permanent autocross set up at El Toro
04:44 that we use for vehicle testing.
04:45 But it's new.
04:46 And so we're not that familiar with it.
04:48 And we both had to take some practice laps.
04:50 And then we're going to do two time laps.
04:52 The best lap time wins the deal.
04:54 I won't jag you on the time if you don't jag me.
04:56 I don't need any extra help.
04:58 OK.
04:59 Are you ready?
05:01 Yes, sir.
05:02 1, 2, 3.
05:04 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:08 Yeah.
05:14 Get her done.
05:15 He is rocking the van.
05:17 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:20 [TIRES SCREECHING]
05:23 Here he comes.
05:24 [TIRES SCREECHING]
05:27 Got it.
05:28 [TIRES SCREECHING]
05:31 Dude.
05:32 Ha ha.
05:33 That was impressive.
05:34 128.
05:36 And it looked brilliant.
05:38 [LAUGHTER]
05:40 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:43 [TIRES SCREECHING]
05:46 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:49 That was brilliant.
05:50 Dude, I can do better than that.
05:51 The severe lack of traction in the corners of this thing,
05:54 unhooking all that brute torque, just spinning the tires.
05:57 Oh, if you had a Posi, you'd be unstoppable.
05:58 Dude.
05:59 There's a little bit of fear in me right now.
06:02 You should be afraid.
06:02 This next run, I'm letting it all hang out.
06:04 OK.
06:05 I'm ready.
06:06 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:10 After the first lap, I knew I was losing time
06:12 in some of the corners where the thing just
06:13 didn't have any traction.
06:14 And so I made a few corrections on lap number two,
06:17 which I felt pretty good about.
06:19 Oh, he's picking up the pace.
06:20 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:24 I think he's ahead.
06:25 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:29 Oh, dude.
06:31 [LAUGHTER]
06:33 126, two seconds down.
06:37 That's awesome, but I can beat it.
06:38 I had Chinese for lunch.
06:40 You know what my forks cookie said?
06:41 I lose.
06:41 You're going to loop this bitch out
06:43 at the end of the track down there.
06:44 If only.
06:45 But good luck, though.
06:46 OK, you ready?
06:46 Yep.
06:47 Go.
06:47 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:50 Oh, that hubcap's coming off.
06:52 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:55 Oh, this is going to be close.
07:15 [MUSIC PLAYING]
07:19 Well, you lose.
07:21 No, I lost by 0.8.
07:24 Ah!
07:26 I went 126.
07:28 Yeah, but you went 128 the first time.
07:30 This thing is gutless, and the steering is really slow.
07:33 And I got lost, so--
07:35 I blame the driver completely.
07:36 I think the car is perfect.
07:37 I'm just going to take the parking brake off now.
07:39 Don't make me get in here and whoop your ass in your own car,
07:42 all right?
07:42 OK, yeah.
07:43 I can't let that happen again.
07:44 That was bad.
07:45 Being that I'm giving you almost 1,000 pound weight advantage.
07:49 All right, ready?
07:50 3, 2, 1.
07:52 [MUSIC PLAYING]
07:55 Oh, he looks smoother.
08:01 He doesn't look as good as I look, but he looks smoother.
08:03 One minute.
08:04 This is not good.
08:05 He's picked up a lot of time.
08:07 Now, my second lap, when I actually
08:09 went around the course like I was supposed to
08:11 and kind of had the hang of it, I ran a 119,
08:14 nine seconds quicker than my first lap.
08:17 And on an autocross, nine seconds is light years.
08:21 Holy [BLEEP]
08:24 Guy picks up nine seconds.
08:25 What, did you find your balls or something in the last turn?
08:31 119.3.
08:33 Thank you.
08:35 I want to go again.
08:36 That ain't fair.
08:38 Five practice laps.
08:40 And so, of course, I won the autocross.
08:42 [MUSIC PLAYING]
08:45 All the autocross really proved was that Fryeberger
08:49 had a better handling car.
08:51 I wanted to do an event that would showcase
08:53 who's the better driver.
08:54 So next, we moved on to our obstacle avoidance challenge.
08:57 Here's the plan.
08:59 Rockford, the old reverse 180.
09:01 We're going to speed down this way, flip the car around.
09:03 The goal is maximum action through the boxes,
09:06 and then you've got to get through the two cars
09:08 without hitting them.
09:09 Thread the needle with the van.
09:10 That's it.
09:10 I like it.
09:11 I'm going first.
09:12 All right.
09:13 The key to doing a Rockford is to nail it in reverse.
09:15 And what you want to do is lift off the throttle
09:17 and spin the steering wheel at the same time.
09:19 And the car will come around, and just at the right moment,
09:22 you have to go from reverse to drive.
09:24 So Fryeberger set the rules up for this deal.
09:33 And yeah, he did the 180, but he hit the wooden car.
09:36 Man, I had good speed, nailed the boxes.
09:39 I grazed one of the cars, but I'd still
09:42 say that was a good pass.
09:43 I've never done a Rockford.
09:45 Fryeberger had to tell me, you're going to do a 180
09:48 and then drive out of it.
09:49 No big deal.
09:49 I can do that.
09:50 I'm dumb.
09:52 OK, here I go.
10:08 Weak!
10:10 I couldn't see out the back window,
10:11 and I just wanted to make sure the thing would spin around
10:14 without tipping over.
10:15 So we set it up again, and I went for pass number two.
10:22 And I was being a little bit too cautious that time,
10:24 because I didn't want to hit the car again.
10:26 The guy that set up the rules failed miserably.
10:35 Fryeberger hit the wooden car both times
10:37 and he tried to Rockford through that thing.
10:39 You know, Finnegan likes to make up the rules as he goes along,
10:42 except for when they're my rules and then they're firm.
10:44 That was Fryeberger's rule.
10:46 Got to follow Fryeberger's rule.
10:48 Yeah, the first Rockford I did, it was kind of a test
10:50 just to see if it would flip over.
10:52 It was weak.
10:52 But the second one--
10:53 --bitchin', went all the way through there with style
11:01 without hitting either car.
11:02 I mean, I threaded the needle with this big ass van.
11:05 I don't know.
11:06 Van wins.
11:07 Who won the Rockford challenge?
11:08 This guy.
11:09 You suck.
11:10 Here's why.
11:10 I had to teach you the autocross, teach you how to drag race,
11:13 and teach you how to Rockford.
11:14 I won.
11:15 Do you know where you are right now?
11:17 I'm in the winning position.
11:17 You taught me nothing.
11:18 I'm in the pole position, dude.
11:19 Oh my god, let's go through this again.
11:21 Autocross, 5,000 pounds, 4,000 pounds.
11:24 You won by a few seconds.
11:26 Drag race, you need to learn to drive better.
11:28 Because if you tried to pit maneuver me, I would have avoided it.
11:30 And then in the Rockford, after teaching you how to do it and you failed,
11:33 I completely--
11:35 Wait, wait, wait.
11:35 If I remember correctly, Rockford, you hit a car.
11:38 I threaded the needle with a van, a Dodge Ram 250.
11:42 OK, we have to pick a winner because the winner gets
11:44 to decide what we're going to do tomorrow.
11:46 I won.
11:47 I win.
11:47 No.
11:48 I win.
11:48 Coin flip.
11:49 Rock, paper, scissors?
11:50 Rock, paper, scissors.
11:51 Ready?
11:53 Rock, paper, scissors.
11:54 You lose.
11:55 Oh, you pick.
11:55 Suck it.
11:56 We're going off-roading.
11:57 Off-roading?
11:58 Yes.
11:58 I'm down with that.
11:59 Right now, out of here.
12:05 We packed up at El Toro, and the next day, headed out to the Mojave Desert.
12:08 [MUSIC PLAYING]
12:12 So at El Toro, we had three challenges.
12:24 And now we're here in the Mojave Desert because we're
12:27 going to do one of my favorite things ever, which is trashing passenger cars
12:31 on dirt roads.
12:32 I'm going to challenge you to actually not break the van
12:35 on the very first competition because I want to have some fun today.
12:39 Limitations.
12:40 Yep.
12:40 I'll try.
12:41 No guarantees, though.
12:42 [MUSIC PLAYING]
12:45 The first thing that we're going to do is the rally cross, which is like
12:48 an autocross, except for it's on dirt.
12:50 It's sort of a small road rally.
12:52 But we're going to change it up a little bit
12:53 because we're going to do it side by side.
12:55 Each of us wants to have the inside lane,
12:57 so we're the first one to the first left-hand turn.
13:00 And so to shoot it out on who's going to get that,
13:02 we're going to have a head-to-head.
13:04 Not a tug-of-war, but a head-to-head.
13:06 I'm counting on the Ram and all its might to put the wagon in the dirt.
13:12 I don't mind losing the head-to-head, so I may just put it in reverse
13:14 and see if I can make him crash.
13:16 While he's in the middle of stuffing a tumbleweed in my car,
13:20 I am figuring out how to win this head-to-head thing.
13:23 And the thing to do is to just stand on the brakes
13:26 and wait for him to start spinning his tires.
13:28 And as soon as he does, his van gets easier to push
13:31 because it's breaking traction.
13:33 And so that's how I'm going to win that deal and get pole position.
13:35 [MUSIC PLAYING]
13:39 We're not tug-of-warring.
13:40 We're pushing.
13:43 And--
13:45 [THUD]
13:46 [LAUGHTER]
13:48 Oh!
13:49 I am losing.
13:50 [LAUGHTER]
13:52 Go Ram!
13:53 That's pretty funny.
13:55 I'm going to push you all the way to Mexico.
13:57 My plan completely fell down when we decided
13:59 that we were actually going to hit each other at speed and keep going.
14:02 I had no opportunity to step on the brakes,
14:04 and the van had the weight advantage.
14:06 I was history.
14:07 I had no strategy for the push or roar, so I just floored it and hit him.
14:11 And all the weight of the van just pushed that poor little wagon
14:14 across the finish line.
14:16 I kicked his ass.
14:16 [MUSIC PLAYING]
14:20 [TIRES SCREECHING]
14:23 We couldn't afford orange cones, but we did find pink strollers.
14:28 We're going to use them to mark our course.
14:30 I'm a little freaked out that Freiburger used baby strollers to set up
14:33 the course.
14:34 I don't know what that says about him, because I dropped out of psych class
14:36 after two weeks in college.
14:38 I thought it was appropriate.
14:40 We're children.
14:41 It works.
14:43 This is pretty soft.
14:44 Do you think we might have an issue?
14:46 Not the first time.
14:48 I think getting stuck just makes it more fun.
14:50 OK.
14:51 Can I take one of these home?
14:54 They're not very sturdy strollers.
14:56 I have a feeling that won't matter.
14:58 Not many strollers withstand 5,000 pounds of van.
15:02 [MUSIC PLAYING]
15:07 I meant to actually Google the nearest hospital before we got here.
15:11 Surprisingly, we have a signal, so--
15:13 No, no, no.
15:13 If you know where the hospital is, we'll need it.
15:16 No, I'm thinking--
15:17 If you don't know where it is, we're fine.
15:18 Is that how it works?
15:19 Yeah.
15:20 I thought if we know where it is, we don't need it.
15:21 It's how I get through my whole life.
15:23 All right.
15:23 Let's just race.
15:25 All right.
15:25 My race strategy in the rallycross is simply to be faster.
15:29 I mean, we already know that the Buick is physically faster than the van.
15:32 That thing's going to wallow.
15:33 I know how to drive on dirt.
15:34 He doesn't, so--
15:35 You know what, though?
15:36 I just realized something.
15:37 It is so loose and silty out there, he is going
15:40 to be chasing my dust the whole time.
15:43 Oh, he's screwed.
15:44 OK.
15:45 Side by side, just standard fashion thrash?
15:48 Yeah, first one to the end wins.
15:50 Is there any penalty for running over baby carriages?
15:53 Well, we're not doing this for time.
15:54 I don't know what kind of penalty you could give--
15:56 That's true.
15:56 --other than being shamed afterward.
15:58 Yeah, but you're shameless about cheating.
16:00 No cutting corners.
16:01 The only corner I'm going to be cutting off
16:03 is the front end of your car, dude.
16:04 Don't worry about it.
16:05 I know.
16:05 We should mark a no contact rule until halfway down this.
16:08 Oh, come on.
16:08 You got horsepower advantage.
16:10 Don't voice out now.
16:11 Let's do this.
16:12 You call that horsepower?
16:17 Safety first, you know.
16:19 I hope the VCR and television in this thing
16:21 doesn't hit me in the dome.
16:24 Well, how do you want to do it?
16:26 On the count of three or something?
16:27 Sure, except I know you're leaving on two.
16:31 One, two, three.
16:33 [MUSIC PLAYING]
16:36 Oh, yeah.
16:38 [MUSIC PLAYING]
16:41 [TIRES SQUEALING]
16:45 [MUSIC PLAYING]
16:48 [TIRES SQUEALING]
16:52 [MUSIC PLAYING]
16:55 [TIRES SQUEALING]
16:59 [MUSIC PLAYING]
17:02 [TIRES SQUEALING]
17:06 [MUSIC PLAYING]
17:09 [TIRES SQUEALING]
17:13 [MUSIC PLAYING]
17:16 [TIRES SQUEALING]
17:20 [LAUGHTER]
17:22 Yeah.
17:25 [MUSIC PLAYING]
17:28 I ended up nerfing him, sending him off the track.
17:39 The van spins left, and all I see is a giant mound of dirt.
17:43 And I braced myself and said, oh, crap.
17:45 The van launches into the air and bouncing a couple times.
17:48 I'm dazed.
17:49 The van's making weird noises.
17:51 My neck's killing me.
17:52 And I went and smashed the strollers for the win.
17:54 [LAUGHTER]
17:57 [CRASH]
17:59 [LAUGHTER]
18:01 That's the worst ever?
18:02 Oh, my god.
18:03 [LAUGHTER]
18:04 Boom.
18:05 Something hits me.
18:06 It's him, jackass.
18:08 Look at the distance.
18:09 Look where you landed versus where you launched.
18:11 Check this out.
18:12 Well, see, look.
18:12 Here's the landing point, but I don't even
18:14 see where you launched.
18:16 I cleared the doubles, dude.
18:17 It's back there.
18:17 Did you clear the doubles?
18:18 There's no way.
18:19 Yeah.
18:19 No.
18:20 Telling you.
18:21 When did it hit?
18:21 Oh, you're kidding me.
18:22 Yeah, dude, I cleared the doubles.
18:24 Look, you did.
18:24 You cleared the doubles with the van.
18:26 Yeah.
18:27 Look, this is where the bumper caved in.
18:30 There's your tire marks.
18:31 You left ground here.
18:32 Nothing in here.
18:33 Nothing in here.
18:34 This is all good.
18:35 Happy critters life.
18:36 And then look.
18:37 And then look at this.
18:38 It lands here and bounces.
18:40 Wow.
18:40 Look where it landed the second time, dude.
18:43 That is distance for a Dodge van.
18:45 And they ask why we're not entertained by a Lamborghini.
18:48 It's because we're 14 years old.
18:52 I can't believe I lost that race.
18:54 Oh, yeah.
18:56 A little sore.
18:58 Still runs, though.
19:00 Badass automobile.
19:01 Thank you, Dodge, for building the Ram.
19:04 If you thought that was good, watch what we're going to do now.
19:07 [MUSIC PLAYING]
19:10 I feel a little sore, but I'm ready to go.
19:15 The first turn of the rally cross, just to the inside of it,
19:18 had a giant lip that actually ended up
19:21 being perfect for launching these things for the jump contest.
19:24 So what we did was we just hauled ass down the straight,
19:27 cut the corner a little sharper than we had in the rally cross,
19:29 and just boom.
19:31 Oh, shit.
19:31 [MUSIC PLAYING]
19:34 [LAUGHTER]
19:38 Oh, my neck.
19:41 And although it wasn't as big as when we jumped the Bronco a couple episodes
19:45 back, the bounce was just as hard.
19:48 My back is still sore.
19:50 Oh, shit.
19:50 [MUSIC PLAYING]
19:53 [LAUGHTER]
19:56 This is the point where judgment really just went straight off the cliff.
20:02 Because we bought that Buick to take the chassis out from under it,
20:04 but at the same time, it seemed like a really good idea.
20:07 [MUSIC PLAYING]
20:10 [LAUGHTER]
20:13 [MUSIC PLAYING]
20:16 You can't do that again.
20:19 Was it quality?
20:20 It was good, but the back wheels went off the ground.
20:23 You got to go bigger.
20:23 What?
20:24 Yeah.
20:25 I bounced like six times.
20:27 Did you get back wheels off the ground?
20:28 Oh, dude.
20:29 I don't know, but my spine's killing me.
20:30 Oh, yeah.
20:31 Go again.
20:32 No, that hurt.
20:33 You were this close from having the back wheels off the ground.
20:35 It was nice.
20:36 That hurt.
20:37 Dude, the van killed it in the jump.
20:39 I don't even think the wagon left the ground.
20:41 And the van probably got more air at the beginning of the jump, the bounce,
20:46 and the landing than the wagon did the whole time it jumped in the air.
20:49 Even though David's car really didn't leave the ground,
20:52 you could see David in the car damn near hit his head on the headliner.
20:56 So I know he was just as sore as I was after that jump.
21:00 In case you hadn't figured it out by now, this episode
21:02 was for really our entertainment and not yours.
21:05 And what really entertained us, and I'm not sure why,
21:08 was to bring two dozen watermelons out to the desert
21:11 with us and throw it in the back of these vehicles
21:13 and just see if they would smash each other while we
21:15 were thrashing down a dirt road.
21:16 [MUSIC PLAYING]
21:20 I don't know who came up with this idea,
21:23 but after we killed our backs jumping these things,
21:25 we decided to go as fast as we could down a rut-filled road.
21:29 If you really want to make the watermelon thing justifiable,
21:31 I'm going to call it science.
21:33 This was really about checking the plush ride quality on the van
21:36 versus the wagon.
21:38 And the challenge was to see which vehicle would smash the fewest
21:41 amount of watermelons.
21:42 So what we're doing now is the scientific water sma--
21:45 never mind.
21:47 Ready?
21:48 [MUSIC PLAYING]
21:51 David went first, and the wagon actually
21:53 looked like it soaked up the bumps pretty good.
21:56 Although you could see--
21:57 you could see watermelons in the windows
21:59 bouncing up and down, which is pretty funny.
22:01 [MUSIC PLAYING]
22:04 [ENGINE REVVING]
22:07 [WATER SPLASHING]
22:11 I didn't break a single watermelon.
22:14 It's genius.
22:15 Once again proving the ultimate off-road vehicle.
22:19 And then when I went, I'm surprised the van didn't crash,
22:22 because it was all kinds of sideways and up in the air,
22:25 and just watermelons flying everywhere.
22:27 And it's remarkable they didn't break.
22:30 It turns out watermelons don't come apart
22:32 when they're bouncing around in the back of a van or a wagon.
22:35 I don't know who won these competitions,
22:37 but this was more about going out and having fun
22:39 in the desert.
22:39 And once again, I'll say it, best day at work ever.
22:43 By the end of the day, it was 108 degrees,
22:46 and we were dying, but we had a blast.
22:49 We really didn't destroy either one of these cars
22:51 other than the sheet metal.
22:52 So we're going to go home.
22:53 We've still got two good cars to use for parts.
22:56 And if those weren't parts cars at the beginning
22:58 of our competition, they sure were now.
23:01 I think I broke my screen.
23:02 [MUSIC PLAYING]
23:04 [LAUGHS]
23:05 [MUSIC PLAYING]
23:08 [MUSIC PLAYING]
23:10 [MUSIC PLAYING]
