DENR opens materials recovery facility in Baguio City

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources opens the first e-waste materials recovery facility (MRF) in Barangay Bakakeng, Baguio City, the first outside Metro Manila, on Monday, September 25, 2023. The first two were established in Caloocan City and Malabon City.

Environment Undersecretary Annaliza Teh said the facility aims not just to protect the environment but also the people who are exposed to the hazards contained by e-waste.

00:00 We have already done this in Malabon and in Kalamutan.
00:03 This is our third site in the village.
00:08 How important is this project of ours?
00:14 The computers, TVs, cellphones are broken. Where can we throw them? We have our waste pickers. They are dismantling them to sell.
00:33 So dismantling them without proper equipment or gadgets can affect the health of people.
00:44 Secondly, if it gets spread, it causes pollution, especially in the fields.
00:51 Of course, in the ground, where sunlight is thrown.
00:57 Because of this project, we have a facility. Before, it was a backyard, a wall of town.
01:04 It was hidden in the house. So at least, the children and the mothers can have a place to hide in their homes.
01:14 Because of this facility, we are promoting health, we are protecting the environment, we are also protecting the women and children.
01:28 We are even promoting green jobs. Because our neighbors and the gay community have a facility where we can get what they can get here.
01:43 They are gay, they were sorted out and dismantled.
01:47 They will sell this to junk shops and other places because there are direct buyers.
