UN Chief warns of 'climate breakdown' in New Year message
The world is facing a “climate breakdown," UN secretary general Antonio Guterres warned in his annual New Year speech released on Monday, December 30.
Guterres said the 10 hottest years on record had happened in the past decade, including 2024.
Scientists say halving planet-heating greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 is crucial to stop temperatures rising by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit), which would unleash more extreme weather and heat.
But the world is well off target and so extreme weather is expected to become more regular and intense in future.

00:00Throughout 2024, hope has been hard to find.
00:05Wars are causing enormous pain, suffering and displacement.
00:09Inequalities and divisions are rife, fueling tensions and mistrust.
00:15And today, I can officially report that we have just endured a decade of deadly heat.
00:22The top 10 hottest years on record have happened in the last 10 years, including 2024.
00:29This is climate breakdown in real time.
00:33In 2025, countries must put the world on a safer path
00:37by dramatically slashing emissions and supporting the transition to a renewable future.
00:43It is essential and it is possible.
00:46I see hope in activists, young and old, raising their voices for progress.
00:51I see hope in humanitarian heroes overcoming enormous obstacles to support the most vulnerable people.
00:58I see hope in developing countries fighting for financial and climate justice.
01:03I see hope in the scientists and innovators breaking new ground for humanity.
01:08And I saw hope in September when world leaders came together to adopt the Pact for the Future.
01:14The Pact is a new push to build peace through disarmament and prevention.
01:19To reform the global financial system so it supports and represents all countries.
01:24To push for more opportunities for women and young people.
01:28To build guardrails so technologies put people over profits and rights over runway algorithms.
01:34Together we can make 2025 a new beginning, not as a world divided, but as nations united.
