Candle shines brighter in times of darkness, says rabbi at Hannukah ceremony in Berlin

The Jewish holiday Hanukkah was welcomed in the German capital on Sunday evening, December 29, at the annual menorah lighting ceremony in front of Berlin's iconic Brandenburg Gate.

Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal and Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner lit the Menorah candles under tight security measures, including police officers watching over the event from the top of the Brandenburg Gate.

The Berlin menorah was lit with a flame which will later be replaced by lightbulbs.

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the 2nd century BC victory of Judah Maccabee and his followers in a guerrilla revolt in ancient Judea against armies of the Seleucid Empire.
