00:00 Welcome to the Carriker Chronicles, the people show.
00:12 Check the pulse of Husker Nation.
00:14 Couple of things real quick.
00:15 First of all, the pulse of Husker Nation seems to change drastically at the end of the first
00:18 half to the end of the game the past couple of games.
00:21 Number two, I'm a girl dad.
00:22 Deal with it.
00:23 Let's talk some Husker football.
00:25 Now before we dive into that, real quick, okay, because everyone always talks about
00:29 the offense and they talk about it first and they talk about it the most, let's appreciate
00:33 the defense.
00:34 Let's not take what the Blackshirts have done so far this year for granted.
00:37 So if you're proud, okay, and you believe in our defense like I do, smash that like
00:42 button.
00:43 Also, if you're a proud girl dad, smash that like button too.
00:46 All right, coming into this game, Nebraska was a 20.5 point favorite.
00:49 They had an 84% chance, according to that computer, to win this game, at least as of
00:53 the last time I looked.
00:54 The Blackshirts were giving up 46 rush yards per game, the second fewest in the country.
00:59 Only Air Force, ironically Air Force, is giving up less rushing yards per game.
01:04 Sonny Cumbie, all right, La Tech, Louisiana Tech's head coach, is a former Texas Tech
01:09 quarterback.
01:10 He comes from that Air Raid Mike Leach style of offense.
01:13 All right, and former Husker wide receiver, Da Coldest, okay, Crawford, if you didn't
01:18 know, is now on Louisiana Tech's roster.
01:20 Just some interesting tidbits coming into this game.
01:22 All right, now the Blackshirts, and they continued it throughout this game, all right, have not
01:28 surrendered a single point on a drive to open the first half or the second half all year
01:32 long.
01:33 That is a sign of coming into games with great game plans and coming out of halftime with
01:37 very good halftime adjustments.
01:39 Now, the Huskers, okay, they hadn't done this in, honestly, years.
01:44 The Huskers fake a field goal at 1230 to go before halftime.
01:46 Okay, with Timmy Bleakroad, you're bringing the backup field goal kicker to run the
01:52 fake.
01:53 That was great, I love that.
01:54 Anyways, the backup field goal kicker that catches it, takes off, fake field goal, basically
01:59 power to the right is what it was.
02:00 Okay, Brian Buccini is the normal holder.
02:02 All right, and they run it for a first down, and this led to Nebraska's first touchdown
02:06 of the game, which was a Billy Kemp end around.
02:08 Okay, Nebraska goes up seven to zero.
02:10 Now, this is the first play that we've really seen exactly like this all year, with Billy
02:15 Kemp, and it ended up in a touchdown.
02:18 And not long after this, quarterback Heinrich Harburg had a very long touchdown run, called
02:22 back due to a holding call.
02:24 Now, this kind of became a theme throughout the game.
02:26 Louisiana Tech had a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, called back due to a penalty
02:31 as well.
02:32 At one point during the first half, we did have a Jeff Sims sighting.
02:35 Harburg's helmet came off, which means Jeff Sims had to come in.
02:39 There was clearly a miscommunication on that play.
02:41 Jeff Sims did one thing, the running back did another thing, a bit of a broken play.
02:45 This whole drive, honestly, at this point in the game, was really kind of ugly, okay?
02:48 The O-line had busts in pass protection, the broken play, ugly, long third down pass attempt
02:55 with multiple penalties.
02:56 To this point, it wasn't exactly pretty in the ballgame, okay?
03:00 Billy Kemp was really our only offensive weapon up to this point, okay?
03:04 And if really not for a fake field goal, we might have actually been losing at the point
03:07 that I made these notes.
03:09 But it was seven to seven, okay?
03:12 Halftime thoughts.
03:13 Sloppy, undisciplined, have to pass protect better, have to be able to get pressure on
03:18 the opposing quarterback without blitzing all the time.
03:21 When you're a methodical type of offense, we're going to wear you down, hopefully, but
03:25 in the meantime, we can't afford these types of mistakes.
03:28 The positives up to this point, okay?
03:31 We had more total yards, 188 to 132.
03:34 We had more rush yards, 125 to 33.
03:36 We were averaging 5.4 yards per carry at that point.
03:39 And actually, Louisiana Tech was averaging 3.0, which is a lot for us at that point to
03:42 be giving up.
03:43 We had no turnovers and we're a second half team.
03:46 We are, okay?
03:48 And as ugly as that first half was, at times, offensively, I felt like we were going to
03:52 wear them down in the second half.
03:53 At least, that was my hope.
03:55 Okay, now real quick, all right, if you're a general contractor, a building owner, or
03:59 property manager looking for concrete repair or work done in the Omaha metro areas, such
04:05 as street paving, building floors, parking lots, check out DPS Concrete Construction.
04:11 That's DPS Construction dot com.
04:14 It's an owner that cares.
04:16 He wants great workers.
04:17 So if you're looking for work, go to DPS Construction dot net.
04:21 DPS Construction dot net.
04:22 And if you're looking to have quality work done, check them out.
04:25 DPS Construction dot net.
04:27 Second half.
04:28 All right, a couple other quick thoughts going into the second half that I had.
04:31 The option is there.
04:32 I'm like, the option, I've seen it.
04:34 The option is there, okay?
04:36 Whether it's out of the spread or whether it's the old I-formation, which we had seen
04:39 a couple of times to that point.
04:41 Plus, I was like, man, the tight ends are just open.
04:44 Let's just hit them.
04:45 I don't, don't get locked onto one pass catcher.
04:48 We have other guys who can catch the ball.
04:50 Okay, but I was like, we'll just see what happens in the second half.
04:52 Those were the notes that I had literally written down right here.
04:55 Okay, before I start to talk about the second half.
04:57 All right, Nebraska's opening second half drive, 5-0-3.
05:01 It was a 5-0-3.
05:02 We took off the clock with power and option, which included Anthony Grant runs of 34 yards,
05:08 19 yards, 14 yards, 7 yards, and a 2-yard touchdown run.
05:11 It also included a 3rd-and-3 conversion, essentially a power run, to the right, and a 4th-and-short
05:17 conversion.
05:18 And Anthony Grant had 75 yards rushing on that drive alone, which was more than he'd
05:22 had in the first couple of games combined.
05:25 All right, Anthony Grant finished with over, well, he had over 100 yards rushing at this
05:30 point.
05:31 The last time I looked, he had 131.
05:32 I don't know exactly what he finished with, but I can go back and look that up later on.
05:37 Now, with five minutes left to go in the third quarter, we had another touchdown callback
05:40 due to a holding call.
05:42 This was the third TD callback in the game.
05:45 This was an Anthony Grant long run on this particular play.
05:49 Now, you've got to go back and you've got to evaluate the film.
05:51 Was it a bad call?
05:52 Was it a good call?
05:53 Do we just got to work on our technique?
05:54 It looked to me like a couple of these holding calls, there was sticky fingers.
05:58 It looked to me like a couple of these holding calls.
06:01 It's subjective, okay?
06:02 I'm not going to sit here and whine and cry about the rest.
06:05 It's just part of analyzing a game.
06:07 The refs get graded too, every game.
06:08 I'm sure you knew that already.
06:09 All right, the start of the fourth quarter.
06:11 It's Nebraska 14, Louisiana Tech 7.
06:13 At halftime, we were tied.
06:14 Going into the fourth quarter, rolling up a score.
06:17 Okay, it's anybody's game at this point.
06:20 The first play of the fourth quarter, Heinrich Harburg, 30-yard TD pass to Thomas Fedoni.
06:26 The option was there.
06:27 The tight ends were there.
06:29 Louisiana Tech actually blitzed a lot of guys on this particular play into the offensive
06:33 line's credit.
06:34 They had struggled early on in the game in pass protection.
06:37 They picked up this blitz.
06:40 And Thomas Fedoni's, it was his third touchdown catch in four games.
06:44 And this 30-yard touchdown catch put the Huskers up 21-7.
06:48 Now around this point in the game, I did.
06:51 I mentioned it earlier, but I'm like, I feel like we're just about to take over the game
06:55 and we're going to get some big plays in the run game.
06:57 And a couple of minutes later, with 11-13 left in the game, Heinrich Harburg, a 72-yard
07:01 touchdown run, puts us up 28-7.
07:04 Okay, and at this point, Harburg had 196 yards rushing.
07:07 He was averaging over 10 yards per carry.
07:09 Anthony Grant, over 7 yards per carry at that point as well.
07:13 We clearly need to keep improving on some things.
07:15 There's no doubt about that.
07:17 But at least we have an identity on offense.
07:19 At least I know who we are.
07:21 At least we know who we are.
07:23 For the love of all that's holy, we know who we are on offense and we have an identity.
07:27 Now again, at this point in the game, Nebraska had rushed for 318 yards and averaging as
07:33 a team nearly 8 yards per carry.
07:35 And I made this note.
07:36 Heinrich Harburg and the option play equals difference maker!
07:41 That's exactly what that says right there.
07:44 Alright, let's see what I got next.
07:47 Alright, if you missed my prediction show, it's a mega show.
07:51 I interviewed Nash Hutmaker, brought my twins on.
07:54 It's a mega show.
07:55 We did a prediction, interviewed Nash Hutmaker.
07:57 Go back and check it out.
07:58 But I literally said, and I said the first half, it may be closer than fans like.
08:03 This is kind of how we start.
08:05 Hopefully we can work on that drastically and quickly.
08:08 But I feel like the final score, I predicted 31-14 was what my prediction was at the time.
08:13 Hopefully the final score is closer to 31-14, 35-7, whatever the case may be.
08:19 That's what I said in that show.
08:20 And I also put out a tweet/post on Twitter and Facebook.
08:23 Cheap plug, go follow me if you haven't already.
08:27 And here's what I said, and I quote, "This is who we are.
08:31 We aren't pretty or a great first half team.
08:33 But we get better as the game goes along and we just wear you out.
08:36 Especially in the run game."
08:39 End quote.
08:40 Alright ladies and gentlemen, I got some questions for you.
08:43 Let me know in the comments below what your thoughts are.
08:46 Random side note, and for anybody who gets mad that I keep bringing up Colorado, I love
08:52 Dion.
08:53 I've known them since I was a kid.
08:54 They're entertaining to watch.
08:55 And the last time I looked it was 42-7 and that's not even a shot at them.
08:59 I put out a tweet on Twitter and Facebook asking people's thoughts about them being
09:03 a 21 point underdog because I was surprised.
09:06 I certainly didn't expect to see 42-7.
09:09 Let me know your thoughts on that if you want to.
09:11 But here's my first question.
09:13 Yes or no?
09:14 Just simply type yes or no in the comments below.
09:15 Are you happy with our offensive identity?
09:19 Number two, how long does it take for fingernail polish to come off?
09:21 Like seriously.
09:22 Okay, this is like four days ago.
09:24 I thought it would be on my fingers for 48 hours.
09:27 How long does it take for this stuff to come off?
09:29 Alright, number three, and again I'm not going to make a big deal out of this, but
09:33 I'm just curious what you fine folks at home think.
09:35 Were you unhappy with some of the calls by the refs throughout the game?
09:39 Alright, go to CarrikerChronicles.com.
