Jay and Bob review the Northern Illinois game with the Huskers.
Transcript
00:00 Welcome to Sunday Morning Quarterback with Jay Stockwell and Bob Frady.
00:13 Good morning UB.
00:15 How are you?
00:16 This is what victory feels like apparently.
00:20 Listen it's a good morning.
00:22 Congratulations to the team.
00:24 It's nice to see.
00:26 Let's not get too excited.
00:27 It was Northern Illinois this.
00:29 We beat Boston College and Boston College took number 3 Florida State to the mat last
00:35 night.
00:36 Yeah but given that logic Stockwell Colorado State would have beat Nebraska by 20.
00:41 That logic doesn't work.
00:42 Here's the thing.
00:43 If you have a green popsicle and green popsicle just need blue popsicles then green popsicles
00:50 and if you know popsicles it doesn't work that way.
00:52 The story of this game is the defense.
00:56 So let's do the Husker Max 2 minute drill here.
00:59 The story of this game is how long did it take for Nebraska fans to finally breathe
01:07 because there was no breathing in the first half.
01:09 So here's the deal.
01:10 Stats.
01:11 149 yards we held them to just 26 yards rushing.
01:16 The defense looked amazing.
01:21 And then Heinrich really surprised me.
01:24 The guy can throw the ball and he's 6 foot 5 215 pounds and he runs really really tough
01:31 and he doesn't turn the ball over.
01:33 Now there was a turnover.
01:35 I agree.
01:36 There was a turnover for sure.
01:37 And the team responded well.
01:39 The defense came in and held them just at 3 points.
01:43 So very very happy with the team.
01:46 And who had a touchdown?
01:47 Who did I tell you would have a good game?
01:49 Who had a touchdown?
01:51 Tom Spadoni.
01:52 Correct.
01:53 Good call.
01:55 Good call UB.
01:59 There was also 3 sacks for 27 yards and a noticeable drop in penalties which was fantastic.
02:09 I caught the coach's press conference and what he was really pleased with was 95 yards
02:15 rushing in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
02:18 What they just ran the ball?
02:21 Oh why would they do such a thing when they have such a clever play call?
02:26 It's like run the ball.
02:29 So maybe that's his plan.
02:30 He tries to do all the fancy passes and then run the ball in the fourth quarter.
02:33 Although if we had done that against Minnesota we'd have the second victory of the season
02:36 not the first.
02:38 So it's like yeah I think they're finally getting a better feel for this team.
02:43 You know as a fan and I'm not a coach.
02:47 But as a fan people from Nebraska really seem to like pounding the rock.
02:52 It's like pounded, pounded, pounded.
02:56 And you know you get too fancy and everyone's like no.
03:00 If you want to run an option you run an option play.
03:03 Not an RPO but an option.
03:05 Like okay I'm going to pitch it this way or I'm going to run that way.
03:08 Pretty much it.
03:10 And I think they're finally.
03:12 Listen to this, listen.
03:13 That's 90s, that's the great Nebraska time.
03:16 Is that the kind of offense that you want now?
03:18 Well I would say yes.
03:20 Because you know what a lot of people don't play it.
03:22 So it's hard to prepare for.
03:25 That is what Matt Ruhle's been talking about.
03:27 Just that's the kind of team he wants to build.
03:30 And I think he's hitting all the right notes in terms of like just build it slowly, build
03:34 it correctly.
03:35 Talking about how he loves this process.
03:38 I heard Satterfield earlier in the week talking about Ruhle coming into the office.
03:43 He said hey guys we get to coach Memorial State this weekend.
03:47 Just a little pep in their step.
03:49 Two more home games and we have Michigan coming to town in two weeks.
03:52 By the way UB what is the plan?
03:55 You know Michigan.
03:56 I'm driving across the country that week.
03:58 I'm not sure I'm going to be able to make it to Attalanta but we'll see.
04:01 We'll just see.
04:02 We shall see.
04:03 Well no we got to plan ahead there UB.
04:07 Yeah I know we have to plan ahead.
04:10 I'm not committing right now.
04:12 It's 8 o'clock in the morning on a Sunday.
04:14 I'm not committing.
04:15 My commitment switch just turned off.
04:18 What do you mean you're driving?
04:19 I thought you were taking a you know what.
04:21 No, no, no.
04:23 It's smarter to drive.
04:24 I have to go to Arizona next weekend for parents weekend for my daughter.
04:29 So we're already six hours there.
04:30 We might as well just finish.
04:31 That way we'll have a car when we get there.
04:33 By the way you don't have to pick us up at the airport.
04:35 So got it.
04:36 Once I change it a little dough.
04:40 Yeah as a guy who's going into a job where he's not being paid it's a pretty good idea
04:45 to save some dough.
04:48 So all right.
04:49 Willingly.
04:50 But the thing is we got to plan ahead.
04:53 We got to get the tickets.
04:54 I got to tell the network down there what's going on.
04:57 We'll figure it out.
04:59 I would like to give a shout out to Huntmaker on defense.
05:04 That guy is but it's hilarious watching him.
05:07 He's 6 4 3 30 but he wears number zero.
05:11 So he looks like this really looks like this really weird safety.
05:15 It's like why is this who's the safety playing in the middle of the line.
05:18 He realizes he's a giant and all over the ball.
05:21 He did a fantastic job.
05:23 Don't eat on on offense was great but really the key to the game specialty specialty.
05:32 Yeah fantastic job down the ball inside the five yard line sets up the second touchdown.
05:39 Fantastic job.
05:40 Good three way game.
05:41 But I was there were two things I was thinking about this game.
05:45 First is that Laporte the quarterback for Northern Illinois is 25 years old in his seventh
05:51 year of college.
05:52 Oh no no no no no no.
05:54 His last name is that's not Laporte.
05:56 It's a what it rock rocky.
06:00 Yeah something.
06:01 Yeah right.
06:02 No no it's a famously football name.
06:06 Lombardi Lombardi Lombardi.
06:08 There you go.
06:09 Yeah.
06:10 Sorry about that.
06:11 Rocky Lombardi.
06:12 Rocky Lombardi is in his seventh year of college and all I could think of was Bluto and Animal
06:18 House saying seven years of college down the drain.
06:22 And I said he's 25 years old.
06:27 What's he doing out there.
06:28 How could you last for seven years.
06:29 I mean I God bless the NCAA but when you're letting a 25 year old play unless they went
06:34 off to war or something like that and then came back it's just like holy cow.
06:40 So that's number one.
06:41 Speaking of special teams Brian Buscini six months for an average of 43 yards.
06:46 So you're right that that phase of the game never gets talked about as much and critically
06:51 important and so so what's what's emerging here.
06:54 You know special teams or you know special teams never gets love because it's the plumbing
07:00 of football.
07:02 It's like it's the sewer system of football.
07:04 It's like you stars a lot of times they don't play.
07:07 It's a bunch of guys are like you get out there and they play and then you know they
07:11 don't get much credit and they and they run as fast as they can and other people running
07:16 as fast as they can.
07:17 It's freaking dangerous and it's it's plumbing.
07:20 It's like you like once the last time you looked at a house ago.
07:24 Wow.
07:25 This house has a really excellent sewer system.
07:26 Like no one ever looks at it.
07:28 But if it has a terrible you pretty much don't want to buy that house.
07:32 So congratulations to the special teams.
07:35 And then the second thing I wanted to talk about is how long did it take for Nebraska
07:41 free fan to breathe in that game.
07:43 Yeah.
07:44 Yeah.
07:45 First series out.
07:46 I can see you've passed out.
07:47 All right.
07:48 I'm going to find your mind and I actually it was cool to see rule show a little bit
07:57 of emotion on the sidelines too.
07:58 I mean he was he was getting he was angry after that fumble.
08:02 But then the defense response was just unbelievable.
08:04 They came in and they just held them held them to a field goal.
08:08 And that's a little bit of adversity they overcame.
08:12 Yeah that was that was a good sign when they when they did that.
08:16 So two phases of the game are looking pretty darn good right now.
08:20 Special teams and defense.
08:21 Yeah.
08:23 So looking ahead here we've got Louisiana Tech next week and then not too far after
08:27 that we got the big dogs coming in Michigan.
08:30 I think we'll be right.
08:32 I'm still on my eight and four track.
08:35 The big 10 was horrible.
08:37 This is a this is a win of them.
08:39 It's like or this is this is eight and four country.
08:44 You tweak the offense a little bit you start to figure some things out and then who you
08:49 play you play in Purdue play in Maryland you play in Illinois you play in you know Iowa
08:56 and Iowa finally scored 40 points in the game which is great.
09:00 Good for them.
09:02 I think the coach gets a bonus for scoring that many points like this.
09:06 It's not a strong schedule.
09:07 So it's good for Michigan.
09:09 So why not.
09:11 You know why not.
09:14 Let's look down the list here.
09:15 So Michigan obviously and I'm actually somewhat optimistic about that right.
09:20 So we got Louisiana Tech.
09:22 We'll have this the with the potential wins we'll have this potential you know bad bad
09:27 outcome.
09:28 So we'll be the end tech and you win.
09:29 Who's next.
09:30 Michigan.
09:31 Potential bad outcome.
09:32 OK.
09:33 Who's next.
09:34 Illinois.
09:35 At Illinois.
09:36 Well you put it in the win column.
09:40 But I'm not putting it in the potential win column.
09:42 OK.
09:43 Yeah.
09:44 I think you're right there.
09:45 Their defense is looking a little suspect.
09:46 Remember how good they were last year.
09:48 Keep going.
09:49 Then it's then it's Northwestern and Purdue at home.
09:53 OK.
09:54 Then at Michigan State.
09:55 Michigan State all of a sudden is looking like they got slaughtered yesterday.
10:00 Yep.
10:01 Yep.
10:02 And then Maryland at home.
10:06 Then at Wisconsin.
10:07 Don't have any extra fingers.
10:12 Then Iowa.
10:13 So you're so look if you're I think your point is good defense good special teams a
10:20 really solid performance by Henry Carver less penalties.
10:24 So what's emerging here with under Matt rule is this something we haven't seen in a long
10:29 time that's called discipline as a lifelong fan.
10:32 That is pretty awesome to see.
10:34 Oh and another thing another thing the open field tackling was fantastic and has been
10:42 throughout the season.
10:43 So that's really encouraging as well.
10:46 Get your hands around the idea that Sims is going to be back in there at some point.
10:50 You know it was nice seeing him on the sideline you know helping Harvard to calm down a little
10:55 bit just breathe and calm down and he played you know much better after after that.
11:01 He's going to be back in there.
11:03 These guys play almost reckless style of offense where the quarterback is a running back.
11:10 And he took some he took some hits yesterday.
11:13 Yeah.
11:14 And he also delivered some.
11:15 He also delivered.
11:16 Oh yeah.
11:17 Yeah.
11:18 He's listen no doubt.
11:19 But that that's just a situation where you've got an injury weight and a half.
11:27 Hopefully it doesn't happen.
11:28 The big it's a big strong kid but gosh you know get out of bounds a little bit more.
11:33 And the other thing is it didn't force him into a lot of weird throws.
11:37 You know most of his throws were really intermediate and he put it on a string which is great.
11:41 You know didn't lost it up there.
11:42 They have one deep ball that was way off.
11:44 But it was you know good.
11:47 Is it.
11:48 Yes.
11:49 He played great.
11:50 They won the game.
11:51 Congratulations.
11:52 All right.
11:53 I have the beams on the ball security was impressive.
11:57 So yeah.
11:58 So really just a tidy performance by the Huskers.
12:03 And you know we're optimistic going forward.
12:06 Now I just going back to the very first podcast Bob I did call the first two losses that I
12:12 changed I changed the Colorado thing to a victory that was wrong.
12:17 Right.
12:18 Yeah.
12:19 Yeah.
12:20 So I'm I'm I'm very solidly on my seven and five track.
12:22 But you're right.
12:23 There's a there's a there's a potential for I remain I remain optimistic.
12:28 I think that the they played a little bit better each game.
12:33 And you know what that's all you can ask for.
12:35 Maybe it's the level of competition.
12:36 Who knows.
12:37 You know.
12:38 But it's they play a little bit better each game.
12:40 And that's all you really want from a team especially with a new coach first year.
12:44 I mean next year all bets are off once UCLA and USC come in because both of those teams
12:49 would beat everybody in the Big Ten West this year including Michigan.
12:54 So it's it's the pack.
12:56 It's amazing that the Pac-12 is going out of business.
12:58 They're having like one of those everything must go signs like you see you say see a building
13:04 sometimes like everything must go.
13:06 Like that's the Pac-12 basically including Oregon State and Washington State who are
13:11 kicking everybody's butt.
13:12 I'm like Oregon State's on them on the I am.
13:15 It's like talk about left at the altar.
13:17 It's like the maddest bride left at the altar ever.
13:21 It's like a mad as green left at the altar ever.
13:22 They're out there destroying every they're crushing everything.
13:25 So it'll be an interesting it'll be an interesting year.
13:28 It'll be a fun season because there's no dominant team.
13:33 Georgia had its troubles yesterday.
13:34 Alabama barely beat USF for crying out loud.
13:38 It's it or UCF or whichever you after it is this like 12 with the ball straight.
13:43 They should have a division of football called State Colleges of Florida because there's
13:47 like 300 of them and then you just put them in there like they all play.
13:51 So let's talk.
13:52 Let's take a little tour around the top 25.
13:56 So LSU looks amazing here and it looks 41 14 Boston College nearly takes down Florida
14:06 State 31 29 Illinois.
14:09 There's Illinois 30 Penn State 30 to 13.
14:14 So you're right Illinois is looking a little vulnerable.
14:17 Missouri takes on Kansas State.
14:19 That was 61 yard field goal.
14:21 Yeah.
14:22 Goal stock.
14:23 Well yeah I was a kicker.
14:25 I was kicker.
14:26 How far could you kick it.
14:29 I could kick on the kickoffs I can put in the ends on the largest field goal I ever
14:33 made was like 38 yards.
14:36 So we had traveling and it was square toe.
14:38 It was the old square toe kicker like what's the what's the guy with the half a foot Tom
14:43 Dempsey old Tom Dempsey style at a club foot kick it to be four yards.
14:48 Yeah exactly.
14:50 Just going down the list here.
14:52 Oh Tennessee got knocked off by Florida.
14:55 Yeah.
14:57 Michigan look good.
14:58 Thirty one six bully green.
15:00 Michigan State gets hammered by Washington.
15:03 Wow.
15:04 Washington's man.
15:05 Washington 41 7.
15:06 I tell you that act well the PAC 12 is loaded.
15:12 Texas Oregon Oregon is going to be Colorado by at least 20 next week maybe 30.
15:19 And it's not even going to be close.
15:21 Michigan's going to just run the right to the Nike gift shop and say get your stuff
15:24 get out of here.
15:26 I didn't watch any of it but Colorado Colorado State 43 35.
15:30 I watched that game last night because it was on after Nebraska out here.
15:35 And what a dumb decision by Narelli the coach for Colorado State.
15:42 Colorado's losing by eight.
15:44 They get they tend them on the two yard line and regulation and they run down the field
15:48 and they score a touchdown and they get the two point conversion to tie the game it said
15:52 to over.
15:53 So Colorado gets the ball and overtime runs down the field again because it's a shorter
15:58 field and gets the extra point.
16:01 Colorado State runs right into the end zone.
16:03 So what do they do.
16:04 They kick the extra point.
16:05 It's like this team has battered you in the fourth quarter in an overtime and you're going
16:09 to give them the ball again.
16:10 It's like go for two.
16:12 If you lose you lose.
16:13 You die on your sword.
16:14 If you win it's over.
16:16 It's like go for two.
16:18 These coaches sometimes it's like I get it's very exciting.
16:20 You know it's hard to admit it's in hindsight is 20 20.
16:24 But I was sitting there thinking so for to go for two.
16:26 They're tired.
16:27 You got the ball.
16:28 You go for two and they kick up and they take the extra point and then Colorado comes down
16:31 another touchdown and the two point conversion.
16:33 You have to go for two and then they met then they get a penalty and they mess up on their
16:37 last drive.
16:38 The Colorado win.
16:40 Just it was awful.
16:43 Was there a pregame fight in that game.
16:45 I don't know.
16:46 There's always I think so.
16:48 There's some sort of brouhaha about somebody standing on the ball.
16:50 Well I'm like listen the buffalo is gigantic.
16:53 It goes from the 40 to the 40.
16:54 It's like just get used to the fact that you're going to step on it.
16:57 If they're like a dump on it or something that's one thing.
17:00 But you know if they're just kicking whatever it's like calm down.
17:04 You just got there.
17:05 So let's look at the rest of the Big Ten.
17:07 The rest of the Big Ten just.
17:08 OK.
17:09 We have one more thing to talk about about this game.
17:13 OK.
17:14 So this is and this gets its own headline.
17:18 I'm waiting.
17:20 This was the worst beat of the season so far because as you know you picked Nebraska and
17:29 the under which is why.
17:32 Yeah.
17:33 Yeah.
17:34 So you're watching it.
17:36 It's like 31 to 3.
17:37 You're like this is great.
17:40 You know there's five minutes left.
17:42 Oh great.
17:44 The ball's down.
17:45 And you're less and less touchdown.
17:48 I mean five seconds left five seconds left to throw a touchdown pass.
17:54 And oh it's the over.
17:56 And so it's like.
17:57 The good news is the good news is you can't bet on the apps here in Minnesota.
18:02 So I did not get the bet.
18:05 That is very good news.
18:06 You can't do in California either.
18:08 And I and I would have been losing my mind.
18:12 But I made that bet and I say oh boy I'm glad I didn't make the bet.
18:16 That's why we do.
18:17 That's why we shouldn't bet because we stake at it.
18:20 You know we're a fan.
18:21 We root.
18:22 We root.
18:23 We root the team.
18:24 All right.
18:25 Let's talk about that just really quickly the rest of the big 10 because there's some
18:31 interesting stuff here.
18:32 Maryland beat Virginia 42 14.
18:34 So Maryland's going to be good.
18:37 Louisville took out Indiana both unranked.
18:40 Wisconsin was tied with Georgia Southern last last time.
18:45 So remember we were at the Georgia Southern game last year.
18:48 Oh that's when all the crap went down.
18:51 Georgia Southern play health and yeah.
18:53 So so we got to meet Trev Alberts that day.
18:57 18 hours later Scott Frost gets fired.
19:01 So George came up and it's like dad dad you know Georgia Southern's tied with Wisconsin
19:05 at halftime.
19:06 So that Wisconsin clearly put him away to finish 35 14.
19:09 Penn State we said 30 to 13 over Illinois.
19:12 Iowa looked pretty good over Western Michigan 41 to 10 Rutgers 35 16 over TAC Virginia TAC
19:18 yeah.
19:19 Call Mark Uncle Mark Uncle Mark.
19:21 I think they've got to beat.
19:23 I think they've got to beat.
19:24 I think they've got to beat.
19:25 I think they've got to beat.
19:26 I think they've got to beat.
19:27 I think they've got to beat.
19:28 I think they've got to beat.
19:29 I think they've got to beat.
19:30 I think they've got to beat.
19:31 I think they've got to beat.
19:32 I think they've got to beat.
19:33 I think they've got to beat.
19:34 I think they've got to beat.
19:35 I think they've got to beat.
19:36 I think they've got to beat.
19:37 I think they've got to beat.
19:38 I think they've got to beat.
19:39 I think they've got to beat.
19:40 I think they've got to beat.
19:41 I think they've got to beat.
19:42 I think they've got to beat.
19:43 I think they've got to beat.
19:44 I think they've got to beat.
19:45 I think they've got to beat.
19:46 I think they've got to beat.
19:47 I think they've got to beat.
19:48 I think they've got to beat.
19:49 I think they've got to beat.
19:50 I think they've got to beat.
19:51 I think they've got to beat.
19:52 I think they've got to beat.
19:53 I think they've got to beat.
