Huskies defensive coordinator discusses Spartans' rushing attack
Transcript
00:00 Are they radically different with personnel?
00:01 >> Not terribly, they've replaced a number of those guys and
00:04 I think they've brought in some dynamic transfers.
00:08 Systematically, they've stayed very consistent the entire way through and
00:13 I think they're obviously are about being physical and grinding.
00:17 And I think they've got a great running back.
00:19 I think the kid that came in and transferred into them is a really good
00:23 running back and then their slot receiver,
00:28 their top receiver so far was a top guy that we had to defend last year.
00:31 And the quarterbacks look great here early in the season.
00:34 So don't expect a lot of differences schematically.
00:37 There's some different personnel in there, but
00:38 I think they've done an adequate job replacing their personnel.
00:41 >> Chuck, what do you make of your pass rush after two games?
00:44 >> Yeah, we're all over the quarterback.
00:45 It's a matter of getting him down on the ground, I think.
00:48 And it's not that we're not there, we're missing sacks.
00:52 I just think that people are leaving a lot of people in on protection right now.
00:56 And I think you look at the number of pressures where the quarterback's not
00:59 thrown on time, or he's thrown off his back foot, or
01:02 he's getting knocked on the ground.
01:04 We're really pleased with the percentages so far.
01:06 And if people are gonna take people out of routes,
01:09 so that's one less guy to cover out there for us.
01:11 And so that's always a net positive in terms of being able to have our numbers
01:16 game and the passing game be the way we want it to be.
01:19 >> We know how much an emphasis run defense has been for you guys, and
01:23 you'll be tested like you mentioned this weekend.
01:25 Do you feel like you've been able to do that the way you've wanted to in
01:28 the first two games?
01:28 >> Yeah, there's certainly some cleanup things that we need to make sure that
01:31 we're on point with.
01:32 At the same standpoint, I think guys schematically are doing a good job of
01:36 understanding where they need to be.
01:38 And winning first down right now is a big point of emphasis for us,
01:41 getting guys in the second long, second long leads to third long.
01:45 And there's certainly a couple of plays here and
01:48 there that we gotta get worked out.
01:50 But we're two weeks in a row seeing brand new scheme where we walk in and
01:54 we're not sure what we're gonna see coming into the week.
01:57 And so just making a few adjustments as the games have gone and
02:01 guys have done a good job of grabbing those adjustments.
