Head coach Dan Lanning breaks down the win over Texas Tech and talks about preparing to face the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors.
Transcript
00:00 Leading back to Saturday night, that flight, it was a mixed emotion flight, right?
00:05 We were extremely excited.
00:06 I was really proud of our team's poise and our coaches poise throughout that game.
00:11 But also acknowledging all the things that we put in ourselves in and
00:15 the situations we put ourselves in within that game.
00:18 But to be able to come out of that place in a hostile environment with a win and
00:22 a lot of things that we always talk about Monday's our day to go to the doctor.
00:25 We were able to go to the doctor and acknowledge a lot of things.
00:29 One being especially the penalties there in the game, something we address.
00:34 First thing we put up in front of our players today is a penalty and
00:38 then acknowledging how that drive finished when we had a penalty within that drive.
00:41 Right, so false start, punt, false start, punt, false start, punt, right?
00:47 Pass interference, touchdown, pass interference, touchdown, pass interference.
00:50 So really just recognizing if we eliminate some really careless errors and
00:56 figure out ways to drill those things in practice,
00:58 it's gonna make us a completely different team.
01:00 And I think that game could look a lot different.
01:02 That being said, I think Texas Tech had a great plan and they did some really good
01:07 things that challenged us that we're gonna be able to build off of and
01:09 we've already attacked how we can get better.
01:11 But moving forward from that game, Hawaii, really excited about this matchup.
01:16 I think it provides some fun opportunities.
01:19 There's a lot of players on our team from the islands that are here and
01:23 this game means a lot to them.
01:25 Certainly a team that we have a lot of respect for.
01:28 There's also some unique opportunities this week for
01:30 our fans to contribute back to some of the people involved and
01:36 what happened in Lahaina and Maui as well.
01:38 So I know that'll be something working with Marcus Mariota's foundation,
01:42 Justin Herbert and Sabrina.
01:44 They all have some pieces where you have an opportunity to give back.
01:47 I know us as a team are also collecting some clothing and
01:52 finding things that we can do to help give back to those people as well.
01:55 But that being said, we can open it up for questions.
01:57 >> Starting right over here with that.
02:01 >> We've talked a lot about the mistakes and
02:03 the stuff that you need to get better right after this week.
02:05 What are some things that you saw after watching film that you're really proud of
02:09 that your team did other than the poise, just schematically, what do you guys-
02:12 >> Yeah, other than the poise,
02:13 that's hard, but you know what?
02:14 I'll say this, there was moments on both sides of the ball.
02:17 I thought situationally, our team handled some situations really well.
02:20 You talk about situation, I haven't been a part of, I can't remember a game I've
02:25 been a part of where there's a block putt and you won the game, right?
02:28 We get a pump block, you turn around, very next play, interception, right?
02:33 We go forward on fourth and one, right?
02:35 We don't get the stop, next play or shortly after, end up getting a sack fumble.
02:41 Right, so I thought there was great response when we were putting some tough
02:45 situations defensively.
02:46 I thought offensively when we didn't hurt ourselves, we moved the ball really well.
02:50 And what I loved was from our sideline,
02:53 every time we got thrown in one of those situations, it wasn't a coach telling
02:56 the players what we're about to do, it was the players,
02:58 communicating what we're about to do.
03:01 We're about to go put the fire out on defense or
03:03 we're about to go convert or go score on offense.
03:06 So seeing our team respond to that adversity, but
03:08 then how they handled those situations was great to see.
03:12 >> Second row left, Eric.
03:14 >> First off, I guess, what do you remember from Timmy Chang's playing career and
03:17 then also just their offense?
03:18 And does it resemble kind of that same aggressive passing style?
03:21 >> You see a lot of it.
03:22 Obviously, he was a phenomenal player, right?
03:26 I think second overall all time passing yards and
03:30 that's the flavor that they are right now, right?
03:33 They air it out, they find ways, their quarterback has probably the strongest arm
03:38 as far as getting the ball down the field that we've seen so far this year.
03:42 And they connect on deep shots, I think they throw for over 350 yards a game.
03:45 And I know that he's looking for more balance, but
03:49 they create explosive plays with those throws down the field and
03:53 they have some guys that can really stretch the field.
03:55 And it's very different, it's a very different scheme than what you see in
03:59 other weeks as far as the route distribution, how they read patterns and
04:03 run the routes based off of your leverages.
04:06 How shallow routes can convert to long deep routes or
04:10 deep routes can come back.
04:12 So they have to be really in sync and they found a way to be in sync.
04:15 You've seen them score some points against other power five opponents this year.
04:19 They will challenge you from an offensive perspective.
04:21 So yeah, but him as a player and what they're doing, you see a lot of carryover.
04:27 >> On the pass interferences specifically, what were the coaching points and
04:32 how to avoid those specific instances, not just in general, but
04:36 especially with this week where you're looking at an opponent who's looking to
04:40 pass nearly exclusively?
04:42 >> Yeah, I think the ones, how do you create those situations specifically in
04:45 practice?
04:46 I think all three pass interferences that we have were a little bit different,
04:49 right?
04:50 You look at Macy's, he was not necessarily in panic mode, but
04:53 the receivers working back, right, to the ball.
04:55 And he's got to turn and be in position to be able to play the ball and
04:59 not just run through the receiver.
05:01 Kyrie was, he was in panic mode and the ball was thrown.
05:04 But looking back at that one,
05:06 that's when we have an opportunity to go play the ball, right?
05:08 So again, just calming down.
05:10 And looking back at Ty Sheams, I've watched it several times.
05:13 I don't know that I'd call that pass interference very often, right?
05:15 But it was called, so now what we gotta do, you gotta go play it.
05:19 I thought he played aggressive in play.
05:21 There was a little bit of hand fight back and forth.
05:24 But what you would say is creating some out of phase drill work where we can figure
05:29 out where the ball might be under thrown, right?
05:31 And you have to be able to play the ball and
05:33 play through without making drastic contact with the man.
05:37 Like the third and I think it's third and 18, right?
05:40 That's obviously a really frustrating one.
05:41 You got an opportunity to get out the field, ball gets launched down the field.
05:45 We lost where we were at in our third and we panicked.
05:48 And that's one that you'd love to have back.
05:51 But all those can be coached and
05:52 there's drills that we can do to make those better.
