00:00 Welcome back to New Rock Stars, I'm Eric Vos,
00:02 and we finally know what exactly happened
00:04 when Sylvie killed he who remains
00:05 in the "Loki" season one finale,
00:07 and what her next move is in the upcoming "Loki" season two,
00:10 it's Mickey D's, baby!
00:11 The series' executive producer finally shed some light
00:13 on what the hell is going on
00:15 with his "Loki" season two McDonald's partnership,
00:17 and boy howdy, it all makes so much sense
00:20 with the confusing play season one left off,
00:22 questions that we now have answers to.
00:25 So what exactly did Sylvie do with the multiverse,
00:28 and why here and why now is she working
00:31 in the Golden Arches in 1982?
00:33 Hey, quick reminder, I broke down the first season of "Loki"
00:36 over on the Deep Dive channel
00:37 and unearthed a lot of cool stuff in that video,
00:39 so please go watch it and subscribe to all three
00:41 of the channels of the New Rock Stars Network,
00:43 please and thank you.
00:44 Okay, you remember, a few weeks back,
00:45 Marvel's "Loki" and McDonald's released this bizarre promo
00:49 for the new "Loki" sweet and sour sauce
00:51 with a scene that is in the upcoming season of "Loki."
00:54 (dramatic music)
00:56 (dramatic music)
00:59 - I'm not gonna eat it like it's an apple pie.
01:04 - So we hear the music of "Moon River,"
01:06 which was sung by Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast at Tiffany's"
01:08 and later covered by Andy Williams,
01:11 and Mobius goes for some apple pie
01:13 while standing with captured variant Brad Wolf,
01:15 who's an actor in the "Zaniac" film.
01:17 "Loki" executive producer Kevin Wright
01:19 told Fast Company in an interview
01:21 what's going on with Sylvie in the scene,
01:22 revealing that this is the first time
01:24 Loki and Sylvie are seeing each other since
01:26 the season one finale,
01:28 and that Sylvie came here to work in a 1982 McDonald's
01:31 directly after stabbing he who remains
01:34 in "Splintering the Multiverse."
01:35 He said, "This character had been on a decades long,
01:38 maybe centuries long revenge mission.
01:40 And the classic trope of those stories
01:42 is that it's all consuming
01:43 and she's not thinking about what comes next.
01:45 Now she has this moment of opportunity.
01:47 Where is she going to go?
01:49 We stayed in the view of character.
01:51 This woman who went on the run as a child
01:53 had been running through time,
01:54 a fugitive of time,
01:56 living in apocalypses,
01:57 never being able to relax or slow down.
01:59 The novelty of walking up to a 1980s McDonald's
02:02 looked appealing.
02:03 You play a little league game and go to McDonald's,
02:04 you go to a kid's birthday party at McDonald's.
02:06 Someone like Sylvie would never have experienced that
02:09 and would be really taken by that."
02:10 This article states that rather than McDonald's
02:12 approaching Marvel for product integration,
02:14 a 1982 McDonald's was written into the script
02:17 and that when Wright approached Marvel's partnerships team,
02:20 he was told Marvel already had a deal
02:21 in the works with McDonald's
02:23 and that this would make it better.
02:24 He said, "I was worried that McDonald's
02:25 would think we wanted to do something ironic
02:27 or make fun of them,
02:28 but we were selling an earnest story,
02:30 a love letter to nostalgia through a character's eyes
02:32 who will see all the novelty and joy of it."
02:34 Whoa, so this idea of Sylvie being
02:37 on her TVA revenge mission for centuries is haunting.
02:40 Now, Asgardians and Frost Giants,
02:42 like Loki and Sylvie and their variants,
02:43 are known to live for millennia, 5,000 years or so,
02:46 so it's not a huge chunk of their lives,
02:48 but it tells us that it wasn't just a few dozen
02:50 different apocalyptic events that Sylvie hit out in
02:53 one after the other,
02:54 but rather hundreds, potentially thousands of them,
02:56 most of which she would have had to cycle back through,
02:59 re-experiencing the most traumatic events
03:02 in the history of intelligent species
03:04 again and again and again,
03:05 becoming desensitized to them
03:07 and becoming an all-knowing master of those apocalypses,
03:10 kind of like Bill Murray in "Groundhog Day."
03:11 If all of these disasters were scripted
03:14 by the Kang variant he remains,
03:16 Sylvie would be the person forced to read
03:18 and to experience that script
03:19 again and again and again
03:21 until she became even more absorbed in that fiction
03:24 than the author himself who wrote it,
03:26 turning her into kind of a voracious reader
03:28 turned sociopathic stalker like Kathy Bates in "Misery."
03:31 Of course she was going after the author to kill him.
03:34 And so yes, for a variant robbed of her childhood,
03:36 it's not a shameless grasp for ad revenue.
03:39 Well, it kind of is,
03:40 but it's mostly for this character
03:42 to yearn for the simple joys of American suburbia
03:44 that she was never able to experience.
03:46 Like when I was three, I had my birthday at a McDonald's.
03:48 It was awesome.
03:49 I didn't even think about the Florida moccasins
03:51 that were definitely nesting in the ball pit.
03:53 Thank you to BetterHelp for sponsoring this video.
03:55 Watching stuff frame by frame is great,
03:56 but it can also be really rewarding to zoom out
03:58 and look at things like story,
03:59 pacing, and character development.
04:01 For a movie, you can just let it play out,

04:57 But while this may be a choice
04:58 that a post-vengeance Sylvie makes,
05:00 not knowing where else to go,
05:02 the deliberate choice of 1982 McDonald's
05:05 might be a bit darker than we think.
05:06 And no, not just because I have some crazy theory
05:08 that apple pie versus key lime pie
05:10 has some kind of dark, soylent green truth
05:12 and everything apple-related represents goodness
05:15 because He Who Remains was eating an apple,
05:16 Thanos in that multiple choice prompt was eating apples,
05:18 and now Mobius wants an apple pie.
05:20 I'm not gonna talk about that here.
05:21 I already just kinda did.
05:22 But let's rewind the clock to that moment
05:24 Sylvie stabbed He Who Remains.
05:25 She definitely had enough time
05:27 after she stabbed He Who Remains
05:28 that she was alone in the Citadel
05:30 as she looked out past him at the breaking multiverse.
05:32 She was able to take it all in
05:33 and realize the consequences of her decision.
05:35 Actually, season two footage confirms
05:37 that we will revisit the moment
05:39 shortly after that stab occurred.
05:40 We see shots of the broken Citadel roof,
05:42 and you can see He Who Remains' corpse in his chair here.
05:45 But the fact that we're seeing
05:45 this new angle of Jonathan Majors
05:47 tells us that if they were able
05:48 to set up something new with him,
05:50 there's gonna be more to this scene
05:51 where He Who Remains might respond,
05:52 or reanimate and laugh in Sylvie's face
05:54 as he explains to her exactly what she just did.
05:56 And by "see you soon" he meant,
05:58 "Eh, in a couple seconds from now."
06:00 Now, after that finale episode,
06:01 season one director Kate Herron told below the line
06:04 that He Who Remains didn't erase
06:05 the other timelines of the multiverse
06:07 so much as he closed them off
06:09 and isolated a timeline that we all know
06:12 from the other timelines.
06:13 She said, quote, "He's been doing that to protect himself
06:16 "because he's afraid of the other variants of himself,
06:18 "which is Kang the Conqueror,
06:19 "and the many other variants of him as well.
06:21 "So there's many different versions of that character.
06:23 "In our story, it's He Who Remains,
06:25 "and he's a variant of Kang,
06:26 "but he's drawing inspiration from a mortal."
06:29 Which is an interesting thing to say.
06:30 He's drawing inspiration from someone
06:32 who actually does have a limited lifespan,
06:35 as if He Who Remains knew that his time
06:37 and existence was limited, that he was destined to die.
06:40 And then Herron went on in this interview to say,
06:42 "In terms of the multiverse, as He Who Remains explains,
06:44 "he isolated their timeline,
06:47 "but now because of what Sylvie's done,
06:48 "it's almost like it's going to branch,
06:50 "and then those branches are like bridges
06:52 "to other timelines where these other versions
06:54 "of He Who Remains will be."
06:56 And I think it's important to remember this.
06:57 Isolation, not erasure.
07:00 He Who Remains burned the bridges,
07:01 and now Sylvie, by doing this, rebuilt those bridges.
07:05 And another term for these bridges is incursions.
07:08 And it's just so interesting to think of it this way,
07:10 that these incursions are actually bridges
07:12 to other timelines, and that this will all lead,
07:14 inevitably, to secret wars.
07:15 But according to He Who Remains,
07:17 probably some bridges are meant to stay burned.
07:19 And Sylvie, by stabbing He Who Remains,
07:21 brought about what she thought
07:22 would be the ultimate apocalyptic event,
07:24 the apocalypse to end all apocalypses.
07:26 She just thought it would all end.
07:28 Her mind has been framed by centuries
07:30 of living in ends of worlds.
07:32 She could not possibly imagine what would come next.
07:35 So we come back to the question,
07:36 why would Sylvie go to work at McDonald's in 1982?
07:39 Well, maybe it is just this nice slice of heaven.
07:41 The only thing I could really find
07:42 about McDonald's in the year 1982
07:44 was that it was one year before Chicken McNuggets
07:46 were introduced to all domestic US McDonald's locations.
07:48 That was in 1983.
07:49 And then 1983 was also the time the US and USSR
07:52 were in a series of terrifying war games
07:54 that had everyone feeling super anxious
07:56 that thermonuclear genocide was back on the table.
07:57 But then I went back through my research
07:59 at all of Sylvie's dates and locations
08:02 on her list of pruning canister bombing targets
08:04 in "Loki" season one, episode two.
08:05 One of them was October 13th, 1982, Titan.
08:08 This was a year that Sylvie punched into her canister.
08:12 1982 meant something to her.
08:14 And I always wondered if this could have been the date
08:16 of the ecological crisis at apocalyptic event
08:18 caused by overpopulation on Titan,
08:20 the thing that Thanos alluded to in "Infinity War"
08:21 that brought ruin to Thanos' home world of Titan.
08:24 Now we could just look at the fact
08:25 that Thanos is an eternal,
08:26 as is his brother Eros, aka Starfox, Harry Styles.
08:29 And if the MCU has the same rules for these eternals
08:31 as they did for the Earth eternals,
08:32 Thanos and Starfox would have been assigned to Titan
08:35 to nurture the planet's growth
08:36 until Celestial hatched out of it.
08:37 Like maybe there was a smaller Celestial
08:39 that hatched out of Titan
08:40 and caused that apocalyptic disaster.
08:41 And that is why Thanos wanted to reduce the population
08:44 so drastically, to prevent that from happening.
08:46 So if Sylvie's sacred timeline bomb
08:49 altered that 1982 Titan history,
08:51 who knows, that could have led the Celestials
08:53 in this what-if scenario
08:55 to hasten the Celestial birthing process on Earth.
08:57 And Sylvie just picked this date on Earth
08:59 as the eve of TMS premature hatching.
09:02 I'll pose a question to you.
09:03 Do you think "Loki" season two will show us
09:05 an alternate timeline, apocalyptic event on Earth in 1982?
