00:00 What's up ladies and gentlemen, it's your boy Adam Karriker and welcome to the Karriker
00:11 Chronicles, the people show.
00:13 And I'm a little extra excited for today's show.
00:15 I did a ton of research for today's show and right off the top, I mean the title of the
00:19 show is Deion Sanders vs. Matt Rule.
00:21 Now let me make something very, very clear.
00:23 Don't get the image of these two guys in a boxing ring going head to head or anything
00:27 like that.
00:28 There was a bunch of off-season hires in the college football landscape last year and there
00:32 were three names that stood out to me as the most recognizable, the most noticeable, and
00:36 those three names are Deion Sanders, Matt Rule, and Luke Fickle.
00:39 And two of those guys happened to be going head to head this weekend, renewing a great
00:44 rivalry in Nebraska vs. Colorado.
00:47 So it felt like, hey, if you're looking forward to seeing how these three men do, Deion, Matt,
00:53 Luke, and other coaches as well, and how they do with their new respective programs going
00:57 forward and you're looking forward to watching that, hit that like button.
01:01 Because that's what this video's really about.
01:03 Now real quick, alright, I'm a former Husker.
01:07 Proud!
01:08 Everybody knows that.
01:09 But I'm going to try to call this one right down the line as much as I possibly can because
01:12 here's the other thing.
01:13 Deion Sanders was my favorite NFL player growing up.
01:16 Okay, he was a freak athlete, he was prime time, he was fun to watch, he was the rock
01:22 on the football field.
01:23 He was electrifying.
01:24 Okay?
01:25 So he's a guy that I'm going to watch, I'm going to follow, okay, no matter what.
01:30 Okay?
01:31 So for me, I'm going to try, he's a celebrity amongst celebrities, I'm going to try to call
01:34 this one right down the middle as much as I possibly can.
01:36 So let's light this candle.
01:37 Deion Sanders, Matt Rule, let's go.
01:39 Deion Sanders, born and raised in the South, in the state of Florida.
01:44 Now he was an All-State honoree in football, basketball, and baseball.
01:47 He was selected to the Florida High School Association's All-Century Team in football
01:50 and originally drafted in the sixth round out of high school by the Kansas City Royals,
01:54 something I did not know.
01:56 Matt Rule, born and raised in the North, son of a preacher, born in New York City, then
01:59 moved to State College, Pennsylvania as a teenager and played linebacker at State College
02:04 Area High School.
02:06 After high school, Deion Sanders played three sports, football, basketball, and track at
02:09 Florida State.
02:10 Football, Sanders was a two-time Consensus All-American 1987 and 1988.
02:15 Jim Thorpe Award winner and was the fifth overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft by the
02:19 Atlanta Falcons.
02:21 He also excelled in baseball and track during his time at FSU as well.
02:26 Matt Rule, after high school, walked on at Penn State under Joe Paterno.
02:29 He played for the Nittany Lions for four years and was a three-time Penn State Scholar-Athlete
02:33 and a 1997 Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
02:37 Rule earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Penn State in 1997 and a master's
02:42 degree in educational psychology from the University of Buffalo in 2003.
02:46 After college, Deion Sanders played 14 years in the NFL, two-time Super Bowl champion,
02:53 NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1994, 8-time Pro Bowler, 8-time All-Pro, and his
03:01 list of accomplishments is a mile long.
03:04 I'll just give you a couple more.
03:05 1992 NFL Kickoff Return Yardage Leader, NFL 1990s All-Decade Team, NFL 100th Anniversary
03:11 All-Time Team.
03:13 As a player, simply put, he's, in my opinion, the greatest defensive back of all time.
03:18 The man they call "Prime," whether it's Prime Time or Coach Prime, also played nine years
03:21 of Major League Baseball.
03:23 Coach Prime is the only player to ever hit a Major League home run and score a touchdown
03:27 in the NFL in the same week.
03:31 He's the only athlete to play in both the Super Bowl and the World Series.
03:34 On September 21, 2020, Deion was hired as Jackson State's head coach.
03:38 He coached for three seasons there.
03:40 His first season was the COVID season, so his last two seasons he had a combined record
03:44 of 23-3.
03:45 They won two SWAC Championships and a two-time SWAC Coach of the Year.
03:49 Now Matt Rule, after college, the more I've learned about Matt, the more I've liked him.
03:55 He has coached about as many positions and is as well-rounded of a coach as I've ever
03:59 seen on offense and defense and different positions all over the place.
04:04 Coaching offense, coaching defense.
04:05 In college he coached linebackers, defensive line, and that's how he broke into the college
04:09 coaching ranks.
04:10 He became Temple's quarterbacks coach, then the next year the Owls' offensive coordinator.
04:14 He's also coached defensive line in the NFL with the New York Giants a year after the
04:17 Giants won their fourth Super Bowl.
04:20 He's also been a head coach in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers.
04:23 Now as a college coach, he took Temple, who was 4-7 the year before he got there, and
04:31 when he was done, they had back-to-back 10-win seasons.
04:35 Temple hadn't had a 10-win season since 1979.
04:37 They went to two straight conference championship games as well, winning their first conference
04:41 championship.
04:42 I'm sorry, their second conference championship all-time in that program's history.
04:47 Now real quick, I want to give a shout-out to our sponsor, DPS Construction.
04:51 This show is brought to you by DPS Construction.
04:55 They are your local DPS Concrete experts.
04:57 Check them out at DPSConstruction.net.
04:58 But here's the deal, if you're looking to have good work done, it's Jason Armstrong.
05:03 It's DPS Construction.
05:04 If you're looking to find a good employer, like if you're a diesel mechanic, a CDL driver,
05:08 or a concrete finisher looking for work, go to DPSConstruction.net, connect with Jason
05:14 Armstrong because they are the employer for you.
05:18 Now back to Matt Ruhle, Baylor.
05:19 When it comes to Baylor, I will spare you just how bad it was when he got there.
05:25 There was a bad sexual assault scandal which got the whole previous staff fired.
05:29 There were sanctions, scholarship limitations.
05:32 It was so bad that Matt Ruhle, whose dad was not only a preacher but a high school football
05:37 coach, called up his dad and his mom and asked them to move to Waco and help him.
05:42 He actually shared his office with his dad during his time at Baylor.
05:45 By the time Ruhle was done at Baylor, the Bears were an 11-win, top-10 team, and Matt
05:49 Ruhle was the Big 12 coach of the year.
05:51 Modern day, Coach Prime, the Buffaloes.
05:53 There were three touchdown underdogs.
05:56 Somebody sent me a text and said they only have 68 athletes on scholarship right now
06:00 in that football program.
06:01 I have to double-check that fact, but if that's true, it's quite impressive.
06:04 There were three touchdown underdogs on the road versus #17-ranked TCU, who played for
06:08 a national title last year, who had an undefeated regular season a year ago.
06:13 The Buffaloes put up 565 yards of total offense.
06:16 Jadur Sanders set a school record 510 pass yards.
06:19 He also had four touchdowns, zero interceptions, and they had four receivers with over 100
06:24 receiving yards apiece.
06:25 And true freshman Dylan Edwards had four touchdowns, three receiving, one rushing in his college
06:30 football debut.
06:31 Now, Jadur, Dylan, and two-way star Travis Hunter are amongst a record-setting 87 newcomers
06:37 at Colorado.
06:39 Coach Prime definitely brought his Louis with him, at least so far.
06:44 Colorado had one win last year, as most of us know, and only two winning seasons since
06:48 2005.
06:49 Now, Matt Ruhle, modern day, led Nebraska into Minnesota, where the Huskers outgained
06:54 and outrushed the Gophers.
06:56 Nebraska averaged 5 yards per carry and over 7 yards per carry at one point during the
07:01 game.
07:02 They had 181 total yards rushing, while Minnesota had 55 total rush yards and averaged only
07:07 2.2 yards per carry.
07:09 Now, Nebraska appeared to get stronger as the game went along, but penalties, four turnovers,
07:14 and Minnesota capitalizing on those mistakes led to a late Gopher victory.
07:18 Now, Nebraska also has over 50 newcomers in their own right, and over 40 of them are freshmen.
07:24 Now, these two individuals, Coach Ruhle and Coach Prime, are very different in a lot of
07:29 ways.
07:30 Ruhle's a little bit more old-school, although Sanders can be at times, too, but Ruhle's
07:34 very blue-collar and not about the limelight.
07:36 Joe Mixon, who's a former Nebraska player and now he takes pictures and helps me out
07:40 with my website, CarrikerChronicles.com, go check out all that phenomenally phenomenal
07:44 stuff.
07:45 Cheap plug.
07:46 At the spring game, he notices, too, but they're waiting for the team to come out before the
07:50 game, come out of the tunnel, run onto the field right before the game at Minnesota,
07:52 and Coach Ruhle's nowhere to be found.
07:54 And then Joe kind of notices Coach very quietly, very nonchalantly, very quietly, kind of getting
08:01 ready to come out with the team.
08:02 And what we learned is that Coach Ruhle wants the team to be seen.
08:06 The only really coach you could see was the strength coach at first, and then he wants
08:09 the team to run out as a team.
08:11 He doesn't want the limelight.
08:12 That is not him.
08:13 He wants it to be about the rest of the team.
08:15 Okay, now Coach Prime, he likes to talk about bringing his Louie and keeping receipts, and
08:21 he's called Prime for a reason, okay?
08:24 And he's just a little bit more flashy.
08:26 Now I don't mean that in a negative way.
08:28 I don't mean it in a positive way.
08:30 It's just factually correct.
08:31 We all know that.
08:32 It's one of the things that has always made him intriguing to me.
08:34 Now, their teams also couldn't be much more different.
08:37 Colorado is fast-paced, throw it all over the yard.
08:40 Do they even know how to run the football?
08:42 I mean, they average 1.6 yards per carry in their first contest, 55 total rush yards.
08:48 Nebraska's much more methodical, fullbacks, tight ends.
08:51 They want to be physical.
08:52 And other than a trick play, I'm not even sure we know how to throw the ball past 15
08:56 yards just yet.
08:57 Again, I'm trying to call this thing right down the line as much as I can, ladies and
09:01 gentlemen.
09:02 I hope you're tracking with me.
09:03 Nebraska looked really good on defense so far.
09:06 Whereas the greatest DB of all time, Deion Sanders, his defense gave a 541 yards to TCU.
09:12 Now in fairness, I don't think Minnesota's that good this year, and that's not going
09:16 to throw Husker fans, but I seriously also question TCU's defense, okay?
09:21 At the same time, Colorado won by three on the road at the end of the game.
09:26 Nebraska lost by three on the road at the end of the game.
09:28 Right now, this game seems like a big mismatch on Saturday, but Colorado's only favored
09:32 by one and a half points in Boulder.
09:34 Now, I got three questions for you right here, right now.
09:37 Let me know in the comments below.
09:38 Facebook, Twitter, YouTube.
09:39 I have had so much fun getting ready for and doing this show.
09:43 First question, who wins this Saturday, Nebraska or Colorado?
09:45 Number two, who has a better record at the end of the season?
09:47 Now remember, Colorado has the second toughest schedule in the country behind Purdue, and
09:52 Nebraska has one of the easiest schedules they've had in three or four years.
09:56 Again, just facts.
09:57 Number three, in four to five years, who will we look back on as the better coach for their
10:01 respective football programs?
10:03 Now coming up, I got a lot coming up.
10:05 First of all, check out the Big Ten show, just so you know it's a new show I'm doing.
10:08 It's Coast to Coast.
10:09 Piscataway, New Jersey out to LA and out to the West Coast, ladies and gentlemen.
10:14 The Big Ten conference is a national conference, so I'm excited to be talking about the Big
10:18 Ten going forward.
10:19 Check out the Big Ten show every Sunday night, 8 p.m. Central Time.
10:22 Facebook, Twitter, I got multiple things going on.
10:24 Go to CarrikerChronicles.com to check that out also.
10:27 I'll give a reaction on my show, Carriker Chronicles, to Matt Ruhl's press conference.
10:31 I will give a prediction of my own, and I look forward to seeing what happens.
10:35 Not just this Saturday, but this season and the next three or four years between these
10:38 two and their programs.
10:39 But I'll give my prediction probably Tuesday or Wednesday, a little earlier than normal,
10:44 ladies and gentlemen.
10:45 All right, until next time, Go Big Red, and always remember, now I'm not impartial.
10:53 To throw the bones!
