Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning discusses the challenges of facing his week 2 opponent the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Transcript
00:00 >> Just curious on what challenges you see on film that Tech provides both on
00:03 offense and on defense.
00:05 >> Yeah, their tempo, I mean on offense,
00:07 they're a team that snaps as many snaps as anybody in college football.
00:11 You're gonna see they're gonna be able to go really fast, really quick.
00:14 They line up in a lot more stacks and
00:16 bunches than any other team in college football.
00:18 So you have to be sound in how you handle those rules.
00:21 I think they had the most snaps and
00:22 bunch alignments this past week of any other team in college football.
00:26 Offensively, that's a big piece of it.
00:28 They really have the ability to kind of do two different offenses where they
00:32 are wide open and then they get a tight end in the core and
00:35 can create some run game issues and some pass game issues.
00:38 They do a great job of attacking down the field vertically, but
00:42 they set that up with the way that they do screens and
00:46 enter that quick passes, some quick games.
00:49 So I think that's a piece that shows up.
00:50 Defensively, they're a pressure team.
00:52 You can see a lot of pressures from them.
00:54 They find ways to pressure in unique ways.
00:58 And they do a good job of running the ball.
01:00 They play with great effort.
01:01 Effort shows up all over the film on special teams.
01:04 I think that's somewhere that they've been really good.
01:06 They're aggressive in the return game.
01:08 They're gonna try to bring the ball out, right?
01:10 And they've been able to create some explosive returns doing that.
01:12 >> All right, Zach.
01:14 >> Will Stein's first real game calling the offense here.
01:18 It looked like he called it from the field the whole time.
01:21 But operationally, how do you think that went with him down on the sideline rather
01:24 than up in the booth?
01:25 >> Yeah, Will's a pro.
01:26 I thought the whole offensive staff did a good job of handling and
01:29 managing moments within the game, how they called it.
01:32 It really mimics what we already do in practice, but
01:35 I thought he did a really good job.
01:36 I thought our whole offensive staff did a good job of the communication.
01:38 And really, same thing from a defensive standpoint,
01:41 communication was good on Saturday.
01:42 >> Front left, James.
01:43 >> How much of it all do the various connections that you guys have with
01:48 members of their staff help in the preparation stages in terms of Carlos
01:52 having worked with their OC and their all-line coach and
01:54 12 defensive players having played for the Router and Yates and
01:58 knowing their system, just how much of it all does that help in preparation?
02:01 >> Yeah, I think there's a comfortability basically with both schemes,
02:05 them doing what they do and understanding what they do.
02:08 I don't think there's a lot of secrets in college football.
02:10 I mean, the film is the resume and that's what you really have to build off of.
02:13 Every team changes.
02:15 And even though like Coach Drew, for example, was here before,
02:18 there's things that he's doing differently now than what he did when he was here.
02:21 So I expect to see something different.
02:23 I think they kept a lot of their cards up their sleeve in game one, and
02:28 I think we'll see some unique pieces.
02:30 They are really challenging from all the different sets they can present on offense.
02:34 We have to be able to adjust really well on that.
02:36 And then defensively, like I said, they can bring pressure really from anywhere.
02:39 So we have to be prepared for that.
02:40 >> In the back, Matt.
02:42 >> You have some teammates that play with Tyler Shuck.
02:44 I'm just curious, there's some familiarity there.
02:47 But just from your perspective of watching and preparing for him,
02:50 what stands out about him as a senior?
02:52 I think he's like a fifth year senior now.
02:54 >> Well, I mean, first thing, he's a winner, right?
02:55 The games he started last year, they won.
02:57 I think that he's had a lot of success in that system.
03:00 They've learned how to use his talents well.
03:01 Probably doesn't get enough credit as a runner.
03:03 He can actually take off and make some plays with his feet.
03:07 He did that some this past game.
03:09 For them, he really distributes the ball well and understands their system.
03:13 This system requires the quarterback to be able to get him into the right checks,
03:17 make the adjustments, communicate with the wide outs and the backs.
03:22 Of what's actually going on, he does a good job of that.
03:24 >> Eric, second row on the left.
03:27 >> They have a lot of size on the outside wide receiver.
03:29 And I think some fast guys in the slot too,
03:31 just they're receiving core of the challenges they present.
03:34 >> Yeah, they're certainly a bigger unit.
03:36 They're some of the best when it comes to catching the ball with a guy near or
03:40 on you.
03:41 They do a good job of attacking the ball.
03:42 You see that a lot on their film.
03:44 I think that's gonna be quite the challenge for us.
03:47 And again, the variety of ways they get the ball to their wide outs is unique.
03:52 >> Front left, James.
03:53 >> Spanning on that then, specifically for Bradley nine,
03:57 he was their vertical threat in a big way last year.
03:59 And it's a big part of their offense that you talked about.
04:02 What is it about him specifically that makes him such a threat in that way?
04:05 And they also have a 6'9" tight end.
04:07 How do you try to simulate that in practice?
04:10 >> Yeah, it's hard to simulate in practice.
04:12 We don't have anybody on our roster that's 6'9" right now that can play tight end.
04:16 But ultimately, I mean, Bradley has a huge catch radius.
04:20 He catches the ball well in traffic.
04:22 They do a good job of finding ways to get those guys open where you don't have
04:24 bodies on a body.
04:26 We have to go work in test to catch us right now in practice.
04:29 We gotta go get opportunities to make plays on the ball in practice.
04:33 So we're certainly gonna try to simulate that this week.
04:35 >> Front right, Zach.
04:36 >> Looking at snap counts, there were about five offensive linemen that
04:40 really played together mostly as you could call them starters.
04:43 I mean, you may not wanna call them starters.
04:45 But how do you feel there was cohesion and
04:47 continuity with that group up front?
04:50 >> I think it was really good at times.
04:51 I think there was definitely some moments of improvement too.
04:54 But overall, I think we got multiple guys that can play and
04:56 we're gonna continue to find ways as guys grow and become game ready.
04:59 We're gonna find ways to use more guys there.
