00:00 Welcome to the Carriker Chronicles, the people show.
00:03 Checking the pulse of Husker Nation,
00:04 brought to you by DPS Concrete Construction.
00:06 Check them out at dpsconstruction.net.
00:09 Now real quick, my wife's not here today
00:11 to help edit this show,
00:12 so you're just gonna get the raw version
00:15 of the Carriker Chronicles.
00:16 Shout out to my wife Angie Carriker
00:17 and the phenomenally phenomenal job that she does
00:19 editing this show just about each and every day.
00:22 Now real quick, this is my reaction
00:24 and top three takeaways
00:25 from Matt Rule's Colorado Press Conference.
00:28 Now one thing that I'm excited about,
00:30 I love college football rivalries.
00:31 I know, they're almost dead
00:32 with conference realignment, right?
00:34 But if you're like me and you enjoy rivalry games like this
00:38 and/or you'd like to see as much of them
00:40 or more of them as we possibly can in the future,
00:43 hit that like button.
00:44 But here are my top three takeaways
00:46 from Matt Rule's press conference and my reaction.
00:48 Number one, he said over and over, just make it football.
00:51 It's gonna be on the road.
00:52 You've got altitude, you've got fast pace,
00:54 you got a ranked team, you got Chidera Sanders,
00:56 you got Coach Prime, you got big noon kickoff,
00:57 you got all this stuff, just make it football.
01:00 Okay, he said very simple, if we can stop, okay.
01:05 If we can stop the CU's offense,
01:19 essentially talking about on third down,
01:22 'cause they go so fast.
01:23 If they run three plays and go out,
01:25 it's like 30 seconds and their defense is back out
01:27 on the field, so essentially what he was talking about.
01:28 If we can stop them, essentially from converting
01:31 on third downs, 'cause he talked about our offense
01:33 needing to convert on third downs better, okay.
01:35 We can use CU's tempo against them,
01:37 and I'm paraphrasing here, basically.
01:39 Okay, we can control the clock and try to wear them down.
01:42 And this is about football, it's blocking and tackling,
01:44 blocking and tackling, make it about football.
01:47 He repeated that over and over.
01:50 Now I'm gonna dive more into this.
01:52 Number two, we have to improve our passing game
01:54 in order to have a chance versus CU.
01:56 That makes a lot of sense to me.
01:57 And number three, rule's an incrementalist.
02:01 In other words, he's a process-oriented guy
02:03 and he wants to keep getting better day by day, okay.
02:07 And he has this mantra, one of them is 1%,
02:09 get 1% better, okay, every time you step foot
02:12 on the football field.
02:13 So that's kinda his approach to this.
02:14 Now when you come back to just make it football,
02:17 okay, Nebraska's been practicing against tempo,
02:21 all training camp, okay, again, this has to be just football.
02:25 It can't be about tempo or altitude
02:27 or all this other stuff I've already mentioned, okay.
02:29 And he said he's not surprised
02:32 at watching what Colorado did versus TCU.
02:34 He mentioned Deion Sanders as a football guy, okay.
02:38 His poster was on people's walls for a reason
02:41 when he was a player.
02:42 Coach Prime takes football very seriously
02:44 and everything else that he does,
02:46 it's just icing on the cake, frankly,
02:48 because he's earned the right to do it.
02:49 Okay, asked about Travis Hunter, again, an unusual thing.
02:53 You just gotta keep it football.
02:55 Okay, playing both ways.
02:57 The top recruit in the country a couple years ago
02:58 that chose Jackson State over Florida State,
03:01 then followed Coach Prime to Colorado.
03:03 He said he's one of the best conditioned athletes
03:06 he's ever seen.
03:07 His long speed is a lead, he has great ball skills.
03:09 He talked about ball skills for Colorado's players a lot.
03:12 Again, my very next note, Colorado has great ball skills
03:15 and will throw the ball deep at least 10 times.
03:20 A game, when asked about Chedder Sanders,
03:22 said he was in complete control of the game,
03:24 excellent pocket movement and deep ball accuracy.
03:28 Again, just keep it football.
03:30 Block out all those other distractions.
03:31 Number two, okay, that was number one.
03:33 Number two, have to improve on the passing game.
03:35 When asked about Jeff Sims, you know the three picks.
03:38 Okay, he hadn't been trending that way in practice, okay,
03:41 and obviously that's not kind of what they were hoping for,
03:44 anticipating things of that nature,
03:46 but he also talked about how Sims was right back
03:48 in the football building watching film, okay.
03:52 And so it's one of those things where
03:54 I think Jeff has improved, okay, impressed,
03:57 gotta continue to improve is what I meant to say.
04:00 When asked about wide receivers,
04:01 he's like it's all hands on deck.
04:02 Brought up Malachi Coleman's name briefly
04:04 so I don't know the potential of him getting in,
04:06 but he's talking about it's all hands on deck.
04:09 When asked about Heinrich Harburg,
04:10 he said yes, he's a backup quarterback.
04:12 He will also help the team in other areas as well.
04:15 When talked about Billy Kemp and Thomas Fadoni,
04:18 when asked about Billy Kemp and Thomas Fadoni,
04:20 he talked about the fact that they gotta get
04:22 Billy Kemp going, they've got to.
04:24 Out of the 60 or so plays they ran, okay,
04:26 he was the first read nine times, okay,
04:29 they gotta get him going.
04:30 When asked about Fadoni,
04:31 they like to get him more involved as well.
04:33 They even had a play down by the goal line for him
04:35 and it just didn't work out, okay,
04:39 and he flat out said in order to have a chance
04:40 for us to see you, they gotta pass the ball better.
04:43 All right, now, rule, be an incrementalist, okay,
04:46 a process-oriented guy, okay.
04:49 Just keep getting better is how he looks at it
04:52 because he doesn't want the program
04:54 to be a flash in the pan.
04:56 He wants it to be legit and something that is sustainable.
04:59 When asked about the offensive line,
05:01 about something that's trying to get better,
05:03 process-oriented, all that, okay,
05:05 he said the offensive line graded fairly well.
05:08 Okay, now, what he actually was really getting at,
05:10 obviously there was a couple times
05:11 the quarterback was hit and things of that nature,
05:14 but he felt like they were starting to wear Minnesota down.
05:17 He said that with respect to their opponent, okay,
05:19 but the turnovers really killed them.
05:21 So those are my top three takeaways.
05:22 That's my reaction.
05:24 Just make it about football.
05:25 Have to improve the passing game.
05:27 And rule's a process-oriented guy.
05:29 Now, those are my takeaways.
05:31 Here's my little extra tidbit, and I could be wrong.
05:35 He looked a little bit nervous to me, okay,
05:38 not a lot, not rattled, not anything like that,
05:42 just a little bit nervous.
05:43 And if you put yourself in his shoes,
05:45 it's kind of like, look what he did in game one.
05:48 You don't think rule knows
05:49 he's gonna be compared to Deion Sanders?
05:51 Now, he didn't say any of this,
05:52 but you don't think he knows that?
05:54 In an 0-2 start, if that happens?
05:57 I don't think he was rattled.
05:59 I don't think he was really nervous.
06:00 Just my observation that I could be completely
06:02 and utterly wrong by just a smidgen, a smidgen, okay?
06:06 And maybe I'm wrong, who knows?
06:07 Let me know in the comments below if you agree with me,
06:08 if you happen to watch the press conference.
06:09 But here's some questions I have for you fine folks at home,
06:12 'cause I always wanna hear what you have to say.
06:14 Real quick, real quick, 'cause this show does not happen
06:17 without you fine folks.
06:18 That's why it's called The People Show.
06:19 Also, I wanna give a shout out to our sponsor,
06:21 DPS Concrete Construction.
06:24 Ladies and gentlemen, if you're a general contractor,
06:27 building owner, or property manager
06:29 looking for concrete repair or work done
06:32 in the Omaha metro area, such as street paving,
06:35 building floors, parking lots, et cetera,
06:37 check out dpsconstruction.net.
06:40 Now, here are my questions.
06:42 Let me know in the comments below.
06:43 How big of a deal do you think this game really is
06:46 for Nebraska to win?
06:47 And Coach Ruhle to win?
06:48 How big of a deal do you think it is?
06:51 I wanna know your thoughts.
06:52 Number two, what is the biggest thing
06:53 Nebraska must do to win the game?
06:55 If you had to pick one thing
06:56 that could have the biggest impact on this game, what is it?
06:59 Let me know in the comments below.
07:00 And are you surprised with how Colorado looked
07:04 in Coach Prime's very first game last week versus TCU?
07:07 Okay, now, Coach Ruhle was asked, okay,
07:12 let me see my notes here, 'cause I wrote it down.
07:15 When asked to compare Nebraska to Colorado
07:18 and their football program so far,
07:19 you know, a whopping one game in,
07:21 he didn't wanna comment much on CU.
07:24 That's the appropriate way to respond, okay?
07:26 There was more to it, but I'm paraphrasing.
07:28 Here's what I'll tell you.
07:29 I'm not a coach.
07:30 I'm not a player, okay?
07:32 I compared flat out Deion Sanders to Matt Ruhle,
07:35 and I broke it down how I see it,
07:36 facts-based, did a ton of research.
07:39 It's up on my YouTube page right now,
07:40 also CarrikerChronicles.com.
07:42 Go check it out at Carriker Chronicles.
07:45 Also, the Big Ten show is up and running,
07:47 ladies and gentlemen.
07:49 My co-host Jeff Turner and I,
07:50 we did full reactions to week one in college football
07:54 in the Big Ten Conference.
07:55 Ohio State's offense struggled.
07:56 Penn State, are they the most explosive team
07:58 in the Big Ten?
07:59 They might be.
08:00 Quarterback, couple of running backs,
08:01 dynamic playmakers.
08:02 Michigan, they played bowling ball.
08:04 Wisconsin, air raid, not so much.
08:06 They rushed for over 300 yards,
08:08 and their quarterback kinda struggled.
08:09 Their quarterback transferred from SMU.
08:11 Also, Iowa's offense does what Iowa's offense does.
08:15 Baby Ferentz needs 25 points a game,
08:17 and they only got 24 versus Utah State.
08:19 Go check it out at CarrikerChronicles.com,
08:21 and until next time, Husker Nation, go Big Red,
08:23 and always remember to throw the ball.
08:26 (clears throat)
08:29 (coughs)
08:31 (clears throat)
