00:02 Our early days of practicing happened in Pike Place,
00:05 finding the most kind of resonant stairwell.
00:08 We were drawn to these two-back lower levels of the market.
00:14 The natural reverb that happens.
00:18 There's a hustle and bustle that's really wonderful.

00:29 Being able to play out songs live
00:31 really influenced our early sound.
00:33 My name is Charity Rose Thielen
00:37 and I play with a band called The Head and the Heart.
00:40 The Head and the Heart is very much a Seattle band.
00:50 Our introduction was through
00:52 the open mic here at Honor Burn.
00:54 I brought my violin and just improvised with them
00:57 immediately.
00:58 For me, it felt very much an extension of Seattle culture
01:02 and the welcoming openness.
01:05 We didn't know what we were doing.
01:07 We weren't strategic.
01:08 We were so excited to play together
01:10 and to play anywhere and everywhere.
01:12 There was a place with a stage.
01:16 We really wanted to either symbolically
01:18 or literally physically get down off the stage
01:20 so there wasn't this barrier in between.
01:23 This band's foundation is rooted in family,
01:27 chosen family, and that collective kind of open invite.
01:31 Josiah had brought this one song
01:36 and he had pretty much all of the lyrics and melody
01:41 of the first part of "Rivers and Roads."
01:46 And it was like a very kinetic, wonderful energy
01:50 that was happening.
01:52 I was, you know, on the vocal mic and it just,
01:56 I remember I was almost too afraid.
02:00 Like, should I?
02:01 I'm feeling this very honest thing.
02:04 And that phrase, "Rivers and Roads," just came to me.
02:08 And I realized, you know, like,
02:09 don't let the fear silence you.
02:11 And so I just started singing.
