00:00 Welcome to the Carriker Chronicles, the people show.
00:11 Checking the Post of Husker Nation brought to you by DPS Construction.
00:15 Your local concrete experts.
00:16 Check them out at dpsconstruction.net.
00:20 I'm not going to lie to you.
00:22 I'm conflicted.
00:23 I thought we were going to win the game.
00:25 I thought we had taken over the game.
00:26 The Blackshirts had taken over.
00:28 We had established the ground game.
00:30 Like with like half a fourth quarter to go, Minnesota had like 50, maybe 60 total yards
00:35 in the entire second half combined when they only had 125 total yards in the first half.
00:41 Even though they had the ball for 18 minutes, we actually, going into halftime, we actually
00:45 had more total yards.
00:46 We had almost 100 yards rushing.
00:47 We were averaging almost 7 yards a carry.
00:49 And you could just feel that we were starting to take over and we were becoming more physical.
00:53 Was that strength and conditioning starting to kick in?
00:56 Like I had pretty much geared this whole gut reaction for a win.
00:59 Alright, do me a favor.
01:02 First of all, if you hate the targeting rule, and especially the ejection part of that stupid
01:08 rule, hit the like button for me.
01:10 Or don't.
01:11 It's up to you.
01:12 I'm torn.
01:13 I'm torn because it's Matt Rule's first game.
01:15 He's the first Nebraska coach to have to go on the road in his first game since 1946.
01:21 Excuses?
01:22 I hear ya.
01:24 Because part of it looks like the same old Nebraska.
01:27 We got the game won, we got the game in hand, it's a one score game, and we find a way to
01:31 just hand it to them like a bad Christmas present on Christmas morning.
01:37 I'm conflicted.
01:38 One game in, don't flip out, it's not the end of the world.
01:41 Yet it's the same old crap and we should have won.
01:43 Alright, so I've got notes written down here.
01:45 As always, I don't know how good this will be.
01:48 Let's light this candle.
01:49 Okay, at one point, again this is kind of all over the place, I feel like I'm watching
01:53 Nebraska football again in a good manner.
01:56 And then I unfortunately felt like I was watching recent Nebraska football again is literally
02:00 the note I have written next to it.
02:02 Here's the thing, we left so many points on the field.
02:04 Okay, we had a false start that literally took a touchdown off the board right before
02:08 halftime.
02:09 Alright, then Jeff Sims, and a lot of this offense revolves around him.
02:12 Yes, he had three interceptions.
02:14 Okay, he doesn't have a lot of help from receivers.
02:17 And he's known for throwing interceptions.
02:19 This is why I said we have to run the ball.
02:21 We have to run it effectively.
02:22 We have to use our three-headed monster, potential three-headed monster at running back.
02:26 The offensive line has to play better, and they were better at times.
02:29 Okay, it was more or less Jeff Sims making plays with his feet.
02:33 There were some nice runs here and there.
02:35 Alright, so you take the seven off the board right before half.
02:40 Kind of a big deal.
02:42 Then if you remember, we had a false start by a tight end.
02:46 I'm not going to say his name.
02:48 Okay, and the play was unfolding.
02:51 The blocking was there.
02:52 The touchdown was there.
02:53 Now, the play never actually happened because it got blown down because of the false start,
02:56 but if it happens, it's a touchdown.
02:58 Okay, also, Jeff Sims intercepted right before halftime, took off a field goal.
03:01 So you could say we lost anywhere from 10 to 14 points.
03:05 Not lost, handed to them.
03:07 Bad present, Christmas morning.
03:10 Wish the Grinch would have stole that crap.
03:12 Alright, I said it would be close.
03:15 I said it would be ugly.
03:17 I also said we'd let win.
03:19 And so I'm calling myself out for being wrong on that.
03:23 The Blackshirts had pretty much taken over the game.
03:26 Now, I don't put this loss on them.
03:29 We got to get more out of our offense.
03:30 We're not going to score a ton this year because we need wide receivers to step up.
03:34 Heinrich Harburg came in and got a third down.
03:36 I'll convert, easy for me to say, a third down into a first down on a catch to the flats.
03:43 Billy Kemp, you know, he's one of our better players.
03:46 We need more out of him at wide receiver.
03:48 But we're not going to score much the way we are right now.
03:52 I like being a physical offense, but we're going to need more trick plays.
03:55 We're going to need more plays called the Osborne play in order to score and have some
03:59 big plays throughout this year.
04:02 Now Nebraska has lost their last three Big Ten openers.
04:05 Four, now.
04:07 Okay, now if you include tonight Ohio State, Illinois, Northwestern, and Minnesota.
04:11 I got a question.
04:12 Why is Anthony Grant in the game with five minutes to go?
04:15 I know he had made some plays.
04:16 He's an uber talented guy.
04:18 But he was not the starter coming out of camp because he had fumbled.
04:22 Okay, he made some plays tonight, although he only averaged three yards a carry.
04:27 So why give him the ball with five minutes to go?
04:30 That's my question.
04:31 You've got Ramir.
04:32 You've got Gabe.
04:34 That's my question.
04:35 Alright, Jeff Sims, made some plays.
04:37 So much of this offense revolves around him and his legs.
04:41 He's got to be smarter when he passes the ball, though.
04:43 It's a lot on him, but he's got to be smarter.
04:46 Three INTs.
04:47 We had four total turnovers.
04:49 We had more than twice as many penalties as Minnesota.
04:54 More than twice as much penalty yardage as Minnesota.
05:00 Minnesota found a way to win.
05:02 We found a way to lose.
05:04 We have to find a way to win these close games.
05:06 I have so many freaking notes here, okay, and I've kind of randomly gone through some
05:11 of them.
05:12 Alright, you know, coming into the game, P.J.
05:14 Fleck has the most amount of wins by a Minnesota head coach through six seasons since 1906.
05:19 Who gives a crap?
05:20 I did at the moment.
05:21 It's not interesting anymore.
05:22 We have now lost 14 one-score games in the past two years.
05:27 Ten of those games we had the lead going in.
05:30 We're 2-14 in those games.
05:32 Alright, Nebraska has 64 new players on this team, 40-plus freshmen.
05:37 Keep that in mind.
05:38 And this is gut reaction.
05:40 My gut is frustrated, but I'm also like, we're one game in.
05:43 There's a whole lot of new.
05:44 We've got a lot of football left this year.
05:45 In the moment, it's hard not to be frustrated.
05:48 Alright, Minnesota, I've got to double-check this, but I believe they had the third most
05:54 amount of wins in the Big Ten behind Michigan and Ohio State in recent years.
05:58 Okay, Minnesota had won the last three meetings coming into the night by seven points.
06:03 They have now won six of the last seven meetings versus Nebraska.
06:07 Okay, let's see what else I've got on the next page here.
06:12 Alright, the second half.
06:17 We come out with the 65-yard kickoff return by Ramire Johnson.
06:21 We run the double pass.
06:23 Jeff Sims is definitely not a receiver.
06:25 He dropped that ball and it didn't look great.
06:28 That's okay.
06:29 Stay a quarterback.
06:30 Work on throwing a little bit.
06:31 Keep making plays.
06:32 Getting better.
06:33 Have a short memory, my friend.
06:34 It's a long season.
06:35 You're going to make a lot of plays.
06:36 I know tonight was rough at times.
06:38 But he picked the ball up and he threw it.
06:41 Okay, to a wide open guy who was a walk-on, earned a scholarship, earned a starting job
06:48 just a few days ago.
06:50 Mr. Alec Bullock.
06:51 That gave us a 7-3 lead.
06:53 Again, this play is called the Osborne play for Coach Osborne.
06:58 I thought our special teams as an overall whole played pretty well tonight.
07:01 It would have been nice to block the field goal, but can't put that on them.
07:06 The O-line, they did some things better in the run game.
07:09 Pass protection wasn't always the best.
07:14 We've got to be able to throw the ball better.
07:16 With six minutes left in the third quarter, I wrote down this note.
07:19 We only had 73 yards passing.
07:21 We'd only attempted 10 passes.
07:23 We had six completions and two interceptions at that point in time.
07:26 We had run 32 plays.
07:28 Again, 10 passes, 22 rushing attempts.
07:33 So here's kind of my takeaway.
07:37 My takeaway from this game as a whole is our defense is better.
07:42 They're absolutely the strength of this team.
07:44 I wish to God they could have found a way to make a play and get a stop when we needed
07:48 it the most.
07:49 I really wish we could have, but I can't put this on the defense.
07:52 I put it on turnovers, I put it on penalties, and we've got to be able to make more big
07:57 plays on offense.
07:59 Special teams has improved.
08:01 Pass game, F-.
08:03 Run game, somebody else has to step up besides Jeff Sims.
08:06 Gabe Irvin had only had seven carries on the night.
08:09 Anthony Grant only averaged three yards per carry.
08:11 Ramir Johnson only had one carry himself.
08:14 We gave this game to Minnesota.
08:19 They found a way to win when they had to, because it sure looked ugly on their side
08:22 for most of the game, too.
08:25 Even when it looked like they were controlling the game, like I said, we actually had more
08:29 total yards, more rushing yards, averaging almost seven yards per carry in the first
08:32 half.
08:33 So it wasn't pretty on their end, but they found a way to win.
08:36 We did not.
08:37 Like I said, we're going to have a lot of low-scoring games this year.
08:40 Here's the deal, we have to be more disciplined.
08:42 If we're disciplined, we'll find a way to win these games.
08:46 Because we are more physical, we tackle better.
08:48 Like we are a more physical team.
08:51 First game of the year, on the road, at Minnesota, first game of the Matt Ruhle era.
08:55 Again, I'm torn with how I feel.
08:57 This time tomorrow, I'll probably be more calm.
08:59 That's why these are called gut reactions.
09:01 Alright, I have three questions for you fine folks at home.
09:05 Number one, do you feel better or worse about the Huskers after this game?
09:08 Comment below, let me know.
09:09 I genuinely want to know.
09:12 What do you think Nebraska's record is going to be after two games?
09:14 Will they be 1-1 after they play Colorado?
09:17 Will they get that big win, that dub in Boulder?
09:19 Coach Prime, Coach Ruhle?
09:20 Or do you think they'll be 0-2?
09:22 Let me know.
09:23 Alright, and are you with me?
09:26 Because I do think once I calm down, I'm going to have the feeling that this was Matt Ruhle's
09:29 first game, on the road, versus a solid program.
09:33 And do you agree with me that there are definitely some positives to take away from this?
09:37 The end kind of looked like the same old, same old.
09:39 And that's the frustrating part.
09:41 But are you with me that there are definitely some positives to take away from this?
09:47 Alright, if you missed my volleyball gut reaction to the record-setting 92,003 people that watched
09:54 Nebraska volleyball last night at Memorial Stadium, I did a gut reaction right after,
09:57 go check it out, CarrikerChronicles.com.
10:00 I'm going to do another show tomorrow.
10:02 I'm going to break this game down in depth.
10:03 I'm going to pick some things from it and talk about what I believe are the most important
10:06 things.
10:07 Check that out tomorrow on Friday.
10:09 Also, Corn Craze, John Johnson, and Doc Talk are all doing reactions to this game.
