Press conference with Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann following their 2-1 Carabao Cup loss to Everton in the Carabao Cup.

00:00 How was the performance?
00:14 Pleased but proud with the boys' performance. I thought the levels were good. We played
00:18 against a top class team. I thought, particularly first half, I thought we were excellent in
00:24 terms of what we'd done. Second half, difficult with the changes they made. They seemed to
00:29 get a lot, lot stronger. But again, right up until they scored, I thought we were good.
00:35 We were defensively strong. Duels were good. We were calm in our play. Obviously the first
00:41 goal was a bit of a sickness for us. But from their point of view, it's an excellent goal
00:45 and a great run.
00:47 The second one is avoidable for us. We speak to our players all the time about keeping
00:52 people outside. If they do come inside, track runs. We didn't. We just let them run. You
00:57 give somebody of that quality, that space, you'll punish them. But overall, overriding
01:05 thoughts at the minute is really pleased with the lads to go toe to toe with a very good
01:11 team.
01:12 Do you think you just ran out of steam at Overtime?
01:15 Possibly. Possibly. There's no getting away from it. We're stretched at the minute in
01:20 terms of what we have. We had a very, very young bench tonight on there, apart from Richard
01:25 Wood who's probably older than most of them, probably three times over. We want to try
01:33 and get... I think we can see over the last couple of games that we're definitely improving
01:37 and we're only going to get stronger.
01:39 How do you reduce that one on Saturday? It's a huge effort tonight.
01:43 Saturday again, sorry?
01:44 How do you get out of it again?
01:46 Just recovery. I'll watch the game back, either tonight or tomorrow morning, and pick the
01:52 positives and go again really. That's it. Saturday obviously is the most important thing
01:59 for us really. Tonight was a game where we wanted to give our fans something to cheer
02:03 about. Hopefully we did and they could see a team that has an identity about them and
02:09 a willingness to give them everything.
02:10 Especially when Sam Brown went on the bench?
02:12 Yeah, I thought he was good. He deserved this opportunity, Sam. I've said this before, he
02:18 trains with us all the time. It's nice to see him come on. He had a decent opportunity
02:23 on his left foot as well which could work behind the goal.
02:26 He spoke to Sean Lodge, didn't he?
02:28 I've not spoken to him. I'll see him in a minute. I'll grab a beer with him in a second.
02:32 No, I was pleased. Moments in the games today when you're thinking the penalty, shout, I'll
02:37 make a line go as a penalty. I don't know how it can be so inconsistent all the time.
02:43 You see them being given on Saturdays all over the country. Tonight just doesn't go
02:48 our way. So it's frustrating.
02:51 Do you think the moment of the second goal, you had them on the ropes?
02:54 I think if a referee gives that then we have an opportunity for a second goal, don't we?
02:59 I felt we got into some really good moments in the pitch and in the round there but we
03:04 just didn't quite find that last bit in the second half. I thought the first half were
03:09 threatening. I thought we looked good from set plays. So there were a lot of positives
03:13 for us to take tonight.
03:14 What did you say to the guys at the box?
03:18 I just said, 'Look, you can be really proud of yourselves tonight.' I reiterated back
03:23 to that message about we've got to understand that we let the players inside the pitch at
03:29 any level, whether it's Premier League, League One, League Two, Championship, they can hurt
03:33 you. We need to try and avoid those situations and build off this tonight and hopefully take
03:38 it into Saturday.
03:39 Do you think Tommy Milne came off with a bad leg?
03:42 Tommy's been struggling with a dead leg. He ain't getting any younger either. Like
03:50 I say, Saturday's important for us. Always in the back of my mind I'm thinking 60 minutes
03:54 or so for Tommy tonight. Hopefully we can get an impact from the subs after that. It
04:01 was a bit of a push to play Tommy tonight and I'm just hoping he recovers well for Saturday.
04:05 Is it part of your goal to waste this win tonight?
04:08 Yeah, it's been a positive night for us. We're hoping the fans can come back and cheer us
04:14 like that again on Saturday against Swindon. So it's a pleasing performance from us all.
04:22 Give them a side, Sean Ley. Were you surprised just how dominant you were?
04:34 I don't know. It's hard to answer that question really. We worked on our own plan. We thought
04:42 we'd have half England of how they wanted to play. We tried to force them down their
04:48 left-hand side a little bit so we can press from there. The second half they just got
04:53 stronger so it's difficult when they're bringing players like they did at home. It's tough
04:58 for our boys but I can be proud of the boys.
05:02 Alright, thank you.
05:04 Thanks.
