Press conference with Everton manager Sean Dyche following their 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Doncaster Rovers.

He says he'll focus on the win rather than what could have happened had they performed second half as they did in the first, says the game is a big learning curve for some of the younger players, talks about the impact of Beto in his debut - especially since he only arrived at the club yesterday, says time will tell if there are more incomings, whether young striker Tom Cannon and midfielder Alex Iwobi could be leaving the club, says he's not seen the possible handball from Mykolenko, says the result was more important than the performance tonight, says he told the side at half time that there was time to come back in the second, the difficulty of having to play again at lunchtime Saturday, talks about the character his side showed but admits they're well used to negativity, says he remained calm at halftime, talks about getting to know Beto- saying the player was an Everton fan as a kid.

00:00 What's the difference between the first half and the second?
00:20 As usual I'm more interested in the realities. Fair play to Doncaster, took it on in the
00:26 right way. They know that there's no pressure on them. Free hit at us and all the noise
00:33 and all the rest of it and they used it wisely I thought. We weren't at the races first
00:37 half but I must say the goal was three yards offside. I would expect that to be given but
00:42 it didn't. The decision that is. And then it's a big learning curve for some of the
00:48 younger players because that's what it's like to play for Everton Football Club. A
00:51 lot of expectation, the regardless, no one cares about injuries and stretch squads and
00:55 all that. I say it because I mean it and it's true but no one really cares. So that's a
00:59 big part of their development. It can't always be rosy, it's tough and they're young and
01:04 they're learning. Second half we put more experienced players on who played very well
01:08 I thought. They made a big difference to the performance and to more measured performance.
01:13 Still, I don't think it was as good a performance as the weekend but you win a game and that
01:19 was important.
01:20 Was it good at the impact you thought you would want to get out of?
01:25 Yeah, that's why we brought him here obviously. He only got here yesterday so it's a lot to
01:30 ask really. We only got his clearance this morning so we'd already set the team up. I
01:34 knew he was going to play, I had it in my mind to put him on at half-time regardless,
01:38 I must make that clear. For Yousef, he was a young player learning but I was going to
01:42 put him on regardless. He's adapted very quickly and very well tonight. Obviously with all
01:49 due respect the Premier League is different but he's shown the rawness, the pace and the
01:53 effect he can have on a team. It gives us something different which is what we brought
01:56 him here for.
01:57 Are you hopeful he won't be the last to sign in the summer?
02:00 We'll see. We've had to work very hard on these deals to construct them, whether it's
02:04 loans or signings. The next few days will show itself.
02:08 Tom Cannon wasn't involved tonight because there's speculation going on?
02:13 There's just a lot of talk about Tom, there's a lot of talk about other players. We're monitoring
02:18 that the best we can but obviously I've been out there so I'll catch up with things tomorrow
02:21 morning.
02:22 But Cannon's absence wasn't fitness related?
02:23 No, it was the absence just as we're monitoring what's going on.
02:27 And Alex Iwobi, do you anticipate him still being out there?
02:29 Yeah, another one. It's noise at the moment, I'll find out more tomorrow when I speak or
02:33 on the way back when I speak to Kev.
02:35 What did you invent when Cannon mentioned the handhold by Nicola Ingrid?
02:42 I presume he didn't mention the three-hand-off side then. He won't mind me saying I get on
02:47 well with him. No, I haven't actually seen that to be fair. Maybe it was.
02:52 He's just one of those nice fellas who are resolved to more important things?
02:57 It's not more important to me. Well, it's important but I've still got to see a side
03:02 that can play, that can control things. With all due respect, this sort of game against
03:06 Doncaster Rovers, I've still got to see that. Second half I did. First half we weren't a
03:11 million miles away, we never had the detail. If Arnie, when he goes through, if he scores,
03:16 I think that changes the feel of it all. Offside goal changed the feel in their favour of course.
03:22 And like I say, we changed it at half-time and reminded the players, there's 50 minutes
03:28 nowadays, who knows how long it's going to get played. I think it was 51 or whatever
03:32 it was, second half. I said, "Bloody hell, you've got 51 minutes to find that calmness,
03:36 that Premier League assuredness that we know is there." And I thought, as the second half
03:40 went on, I thought we did.
03:41 You could have done with a quick turnaround now, but the transfer still wouldn't have
03:46 been anything else. Could have done with that, it being 12-30 on Saturday.
03:50 Well, that's the way the fixtures are put at you. We have got a stretched squad, we
03:55 know that. We are working in the market the best we can, as diligently as we can. It's
03:58 not been an easy market for us because we haven't got pots of gold. That's become quite
04:02 obvious. We're still seeing if we can affect things. We'll have to wait and see on that.
04:07 But the fixtures are the fixtures. We get on with it, they're put there, that's it.
04:11 Done deal. So we will be playing at 12-30 on Saturday.
04:14 Are you pleased with the character? There's been a lot of negativity at the start of the season.
04:19 Well, I think to be fair, they're used to negativity. I haven't experienced too much
04:23 else since I've been at Everton Football Club because it's been there for a couple
04:26 of years now. So I think it's more about changing the story. I've mentioned it recently.
04:31 We should have already, I feel, with the performances, two out of the three performances, I must
04:35 say, because I think they've been very good. The difference was tonight, we found the moments
04:40 and made sure we took care of business and I was pleased with that second half. It's part of that
04:46 growth, I think, as a group. I said to them from last season, they've played in some unbelievably
04:50 pressurised situations last season and the season before. I said, "Look, lads, that has to help you
04:56 grow. That has to be part of what you've got in your locker to play when you are under pressure."
05:00 Because every game in the Premier League is a pressurised game, some bigger than others,
05:04 obviously, and we felt that last season. So tonight was more about reminding them of that,
05:09 the half-time particularly, and after the game. Saying, "Look, you keep growing from these
05:13 performances. It's more about the young lads, to be fair." I said, "Lads, that's how it feels.
05:17 That's what it's like. Can you handle that? Can you, as you grow and mature as a footballer,
05:21 can you handle when the heat's on?" Most people in football, most people in life, actually,
05:25 can handle the good times. What about when it's not so good? I think that's a big thing for the
05:29 players today and not just the young players, for everyone, because that's part of what the
05:33 story's been for a couple of seasons here and it's our job to change it.
05:36 Are you angry at Arsenal?
05:40 No, I don't really do. Angry, as much as people think, despite my voice and my appearance,
05:44 very rarely solves anything. Now and again I do. Just questioned some of the why's and wherefores,
05:50 realigned them and said, "Lads, we've got time to go out there and correct things." And I thought
05:56 we did. What have you made of Detto off the pitch so far?
05:59 Well, I haven't had dinner with him, to be fair. I haven't popped round his house,
06:04 so I don't really know that much about him as a person, but that'll come over time. But he's
06:09 really pleased to be here. He knows a lot about Everton Football Club because he's a fan when he
06:12 was a kid. And I've sat with him and just had a quick chat with him and said, "Look, first things
06:17 first, come and enjoy everything." We don't over-pressurise players when they first come to
06:21 the club. Give them a chance to breathe, give them a chance to settle, give them a chance to just
06:25 feel what it is. And tonight I said, "Go and enjoy it. That's it. That's all I said to him. Go and
06:29 enjoy it." And then, of course, we'll add in layers of coaching and what we can do and things we've
06:34 noticed and all that sort of stuff. And he'll naturally learn about the group as well. But he's
06:38 got a real nice edge to him, I would say, about his past, where he's come from. And now he's
06:43 getting there and now he's going, "Right, I'm ready to take it on." I thought he certainly
06:46 showed the desire to take it on second half tonight.
06:48 Okay, guys.
06:50 It's okay. Thanks, everyone.
