00:00 Welcome to the Karriker Chronicles, the people's show where we check the pulse of Husker Nation.
00:13 Ladies and gentlemen, this is the day every offseason that I wait for each and every year.
00:18 I can't tell you how many times I checked social media yesterday.
00:21 I knew the black shirts were being handed out.
00:24 I saw the picture of the three guys who got them yesterday, along with the last three
00:29 single digit numbers that were handed out.
00:31 And I was ready to do a gut reaction yesterday.
00:33 Now if you missed it, I did do my Minnesota Preview and Prediction show, but this is like
00:37 Christmas to me each and every offseason when I get to talk about the black shirts finally
00:42 being handed out.
00:43 Now really quick, if you're excited to see what Tony White's defense can do versus a
00:47 new quarterback, a running back by committee, which means nobody has stood out a running
00:52 back for Minnesota just yet, and a revamped offensive line on Thursday night versus Minnesota
00:57 the Gophers, smash that like button.
01:00 Now real quick, as I mentioned yesterday, the last three single digit numbers were handed
01:04 out, a new tradition started by Matt Rule, and I'm bought into that.
01:07 I'm excited.
01:08 I'm all about earning crap.
01:09 Let's earn everything!
01:10 All right?
01:11 Quentin Newsom got number six back.
01:14 Deshaun Singleton got number eight.
01:15 Ty Robinson got number nine.
01:18 Okay?
01:19 Now there's eight defensive players, two offensive players, and a shout out to Ethan Piper, who
01:24 technically can't earn a single digit number because he's an offensive lineman.
01:27 Okay, who got these ten single digit numbers?
01:30 The remaining guys are zero, Nash Hutmaker, number one, Billy Kemp, number two, Isaac
01:35 Gifford, number three, Nick Henrich, number four, Luke Grimer, number five, John Bullock,
01:39 number seven, Jeff Sims, and I mentioned the other three.
01:41 Okay?
01:42 And the first three that I mentioned, Newsom, Singleton, Robinson, all got black shirts
01:45 yesterday.
01:46 Now, the rest of the black shirts were announced today, so I finally get to do this gut reaction.
01:51 The defensive line, eleven total black shirts.
01:53 The defensive line, Ty Robinson, Nash Hutmaker, Blaise Gunnarsson.
01:57 Now, Tony White, when I interviewed him, okay, a couple weeks ago, he mentioned several guys
02:02 who stood out this offseason.
02:04 A majority of these black shirts, but two of the guys he talked about on the defensive
02:07 line were Hutmaker and Gunnarsson.
02:08 All right?
02:09 Hopefully that defensive line can stand up tall this year without a lot of experience.
02:14 Linebackers, three of them, Luke Grimer, John Bullock, and Chief Borders.
02:17 All right, five DBs got black shirts.
02:20 Quinton Newsom, Deshaun Singleton, Omar Brown, Isaac Gifford, Malcolm Hartzog.
02:24 Now, some of the linebackers, when I interviewed Coach White, that he brought up, okay, pretty
02:28 much all of them, okay, but the ones I have underlined here are Luke Grimer, John Bullock,
02:31 and some of the guys in the secondary, Isaac Gifford, Malcolm Hartzog.
02:35 All right, now, first-time black shirts are Omar Brown, Deshaun Singleton, John Bullock,
02:40 Florida Transfer, Chief Borders, and Blaise Gunnarsson.
02:44 All right, now, admittedly, after I interviewed Coach White, we chatted for a while.
02:50 For about 30-plus minutes, and he asked me a bunch of different questions.
02:54 How many black shirts should be handed out?
02:56 Like, what's the black shirt tradition mean to me?
02:58 What's it mean to be a black shirt?
02:59 I'll be honest with you.
03:00 What it means to be a black shirt to me, very simply, and I'm not going to share a lot from
03:03 this conversation because I told him I'd keep it confidential, but I'll share what a black
03:07 shirt means to me.
03:08 It means you're one of the biggest badasses on the field, just to speak plainly and bluntly.
03:12 Okay, but how many should be handed out?
03:14 How should it be done?
03:15 They're trying to do the black shirt tradition, the respect that they believe that it deserves,
03:19 and it does deserve.
03:20 So, props to them for that.
03:21 Now, the one thing I will share, because I told him I'd keep that conversation private,
03:26 that in itself could have been an interview on its own, but that's a topic for another
03:28 day.
03:29 I do know their mental mindset and approach to the black shirt is less is more, old school,
03:35 earn the right to wear it every day.
03:38 All right, now, I've got a couple more things, but really quick, I want to give a shout-out
03:43 and a thank you to our sponsor, DPS Construction.
03:47 And here's why I tied with them.
03:49 I formed a relationship with them.
03:51 Jason Armstrong, the owner, he wants to do things the right way.
03:54 He wants to take care of his customers.
03:55 And the one thing that he told me he wants to focus on is having good quality workers.
04:00 If you are a general contractor, building owner, or property manager looking for concrete
04:05 repair or work done in the Omaha metro area, such as street paving, building floors, and
04:11 parking lots, check out DPSconstruction.net.
04:14 And if this is in your line of work and you're looking for a quality employer, DPSconstruction.net.
04:21 Tell them Adam sent you, ask to speak to Jason.
04:24 All right, last couple of things I got for you fine folks.
04:27 Okay, couple of questions.
04:30 Who's our best defensive player going to be this year?
04:33 Yeah, we're a black shirt unit, but I'm a guy who hosts the show, so I can do things
04:37 that I wouldn't and talk about things that I wouldn't as a player.
04:39 Who's going to be our best defensive player this year?
04:41 Let me know in the comments below.
04:43 Number two, linebackers.
04:45 Probably our strongest unit projected going into the season.
04:49 Defensive line, the biggest question mark, as I mentioned earlier.
04:51 A lot of lack of experience up there so far.
04:54 Will Nash Hutmaker and Blaise Gunnarsson step up big for the defense as a whole and the
04:59 defensive line this year?
05:00 Last question I got, are you looking forward to seeing a more aggressive, attacking style
05:06 of black shirt defense this fall?
05:09 Now real quick, if you missed my past couple of shows, it's an interview with Rex Burkhead.
05:14 I did my Minnesota preview and prediction, as I mentioned earlier.
05:17 And I predict Nebraska to win in a close, possibly very ugly game.
05:20 Go check out that breakdown.
05:21 And coming up Wednesday night, Nebraska volleyball is playing inside Memorial Stadium.
05:27 Make sure you check out the reaction I'm going to put immediately following that volleyball
05:30 match on Wednesday.
05:31 Also, of course, my gut reaction following Nebraska vs. Minnesota on Thursday night.
05:36 You can see it all at Carriker Chronicles.com.
05:39 That's Carriker Chronicles.com.
05:40 And until next time, Go Big Red.
