00:00 Welcome to Sunday Morning Quarterback with Jay Stockwell and Bob Frady.
00:06 Yumi, where are you, man?
00:08 I am in construction project number two here in Southern California.
00:12 One construction project wasn't enough.
00:15 Two construction projects were not enough.
00:17 Not only are you a numbskull and buy a house in Minnesota, you then, you renovate that
00:22 one and then you renovate your existing home at the same time.
00:26 I'm going to say two words that every man should obey.
00:30 Happy wife, happy life.
00:33 That's four words.
00:34 That's four words, Bob.
00:35 Happy wife, happy life.
00:36 That's three words.
00:37 One of them said twice.
00:39 But.
00:40 All right.
00:41 This is our Husker Max fan experience guide for Minnesota.
00:45 So if you're coming to Minnesota for any type of game, including the Minnesota-Nebraska
00:49 football game next week, we're going to give you the straight dope on where to go.
00:54 We do not get compensated for this, but everything that we give you is going to be a five-star
01:00 recommendation.
01:02 And this is a really small town.
01:04 Nothing's more than 15 minutes away from the stadium.
01:06 And so these activities will be probably more away from the game, but we will touch on some
01:09 stuff that's close to the game as well.
01:11 And soon Bob will be living here.
01:13 Now Bob's been to many of these places because before Bob sold his company, I took him everywhere
01:18 and paid for everything.
01:19 Yes, he did.
01:23 He's still going to.
01:24 He just doesn't know it yet.
01:25 The thing that kills me about you, you bragging on about how you used to pay for everything
01:29 is now I start to pay for stuff.
01:31 You look like your feelings are hurt.
01:34 I'll pay for that.
01:35 That's my job.
01:36 Like, no, no, no, no, no, no.
01:37 You know, you're not comfortable.
01:38 You're not comfortable with the role reversal.
01:41 It increases my.
01:42 You're you're you're allowed to pay Bob.
01:45 How about how about Blake?
01:46 Want to pay for that?
01:49 Yeah.
01:50 OK, so.
01:51 All right.
01:52 Hotels.
01:53 No, no, no.
01:54 First of all, on the first stop, first stop on any trip to Minneapolis, it's the Minneapolis
02:00 airport.
02:01 Unless you're driving bigger.
02:02 It's bigger than some cities in in in Nebraska.
02:07 Top also top rated.
02:08 It has great food and has a golf simulator.
02:14 So if you happen to come here in the winter for some reason, like for a hockey game or
02:18 something, then stop in the airport, go to the PGA store in a few balls and then bounce
02:23 at that.
02:24 Leave a little time to investigate the airport.
02:26 OK, now we're out of the airport.
02:28 No, hold on.
02:29 There's there's a couple of things.
02:30 There's some great restaurants and decent shopping in there.
02:33 The valet parking is unbelievable.
02:35 You can if you live here, you can be, you know, in and out of valet parking and through
02:39 through security, sometimes in under five minutes from the time you park your car.
02:43 So fantastic airport operating United States.
02:47 Great way to come and visit us here in Minnesota.
02:50 But you'll probably have their their hotel accommodations book at this point or they're
02:54 staying with somebody.
02:56 But I'm going to give you a few that you cannot go wrong with.
02:59 Now, I'm a Marriott guy, so there's a little bit of Marriott bias bias here.
03:02 But I'm also going to talk about various areas of town.
03:05 So, number one, if you've got children, Mall of America is a great bet.
03:10 They've got the JW Marriott.
03:12 There's another hotel out there which escapes me, but it's a fantastic place for kids.
03:17 Lots of activities.
03:18 And if you've never been there, it's a kind of a sixth wonder of the world.
03:20 You got to go see Mall of America.
03:22 And again, only 15 minutes away from the stadium.
03:25 Now let's talk about downtown for a second.
03:27 Any comments on MOA, Bob?
03:28 Do you agree with that?
03:29 Yes.
03:30 And right next to the MOA is the Great Wolf Lodge.
03:34 So if you have kids, they got indoor pools, all sorts of cool stuff.
03:40 So if you come in when it's cold, especially it's open all winter.
03:44 So you can still do your swimming in the winter time in Minneapolis.
03:47 All right.
03:48 Now moving downtown, a Marriott property I really like, the W Foshay.
03:54 I've been a big W fan for years and years, still am.
03:56 That one happens to be connected to Manny's, which is one of the steakhouses we're going
04:00 to talk about here in a minute.
04:01 But W Foshay has got a great nightlife sort of bar scene, again, directly connected to
04:06 Manny's.
04:07 So really, really cool downtown scene.
04:09 Along with that, the Hueying is very good.
04:11 The Hueying is a boutique hotel, newer, a little pricier, probably a little in high
04:17 demand, hard to get into.
04:19 But if you're downtown and want to just visit a really cool place to have a drink, I would
04:23 throw the Hueying in there.
04:24 And for that matter, I would add the Four Seasons to that as well, in terms of downtown
04:29 hotels that are really cool.
04:31 Even if you're not staying there, just go in and have a drink or have lunch or a bit
04:34 of dinner or something.
04:36 You're like Gavin Spendy with those places right there.
04:38 Those places are expensive.
04:39 But again, you don't necessarily have to stay there, but they're certainly worth a visit
04:43 and they're certainly aspirational if you're not staying there.
04:46 Check it out.
04:47 Check it out.
04:48 Anything to add for downtown, Bob?
04:51 No, no.
04:52 I don't stay downtown.
04:53 And it's not because I don't like downtown.
04:55 It's because, well, I live outside of town.
04:58 So my stay at my house.
05:01 You stay at my house.
05:02 That's why.
05:03 And soon you'll be staying in my house.
05:04 So dip it up.
05:06 Probably more than I want to.
05:08 Yeah.
05:09 As soon as the kitchen gets fired up, Jay's going to be at my house a lot.
05:14 And then, so moving west, Westin Edina is a great hotel.
05:19 Independently run.
05:20 It's a franchise location.
05:21 It's got a McCormick and Schmitz right in it.
05:24 And then it's attached to the Galleria.
05:26 So again, great restaurants, great shopping.
05:29 Right across the street is a Starbucks and Cove Edina, which is on our restaurant list
05:35 here.
05:36 And it gives a thing.
05:37 People in Minnesota know it's cold and they behave accordingly.
05:41 They have built infrastructure so that you don't have to go outside too much.
05:46 So if you're staying at a hotel, a lot of times they're attached to something that is
05:51 fun to do because it's really cold here in the wintertime.
05:55 But people are aware of that.
05:57 So not like you're going to not need the jacket.
06:00 You still didn't need a jacket.
06:01 But a lot of times the hotels are attached directly to something pretty cool.
06:05 Like the W, like the Mall of America Hotel, like some of the hotels downtown.
06:10 They're tied into the gerbil tunnel that people all walk around.
06:14 You don't have to go outside.
06:16 Great point.
06:17 And then moving west, The Landing in Wysetta.
06:19 Again, linked to some of the restaurants that we're going to talk about.
06:22 The Landing is a great staycation place if you're a diner guy just wanting to get away
06:26 for a weekend.
06:27 But again, Wysetta is another place you should visit.
06:30 It's right on Lake Minnetonka.
06:32 It has a bit of a, you know, sort of Massachusetts feel to it and a great little lakeside town
06:40 with great restaurants, great shopping, walking around.
06:44 So check out Wysetta as well.
06:46 Yeah.
06:47 If the weather's nice and you're not going to drive loaded, then stay outside of the
06:52 city near the lakes and just drive into the game and then turn around and come back out.
06:56 If you're going to get hammered, then don't do that.
06:59 Stay close to the stadium.
07:00 We don't need any drunk Nebraskans running around Minnesota.
07:06 In the age of Uber, no one should ever get a DUI ever again.
07:10 There you go.
07:11 You want to get hammered, get an Uber.
07:12 There's a very good Uber system here in Minneapolis.
07:14 In some places in Nebraska, it's kind of hard to get an Uber.
07:17 Not so much in Minneapolis.
07:19 It always shocks me when people get DUIs anymore because Uber's everywhere and it's really
07:24 good here.
07:25 They have all different levels of Uber.
07:26 So just get the Uber app and you get a ride no matter what.
07:30 All right.
07:31 That's it for hotels.
07:32 Now let's go to the must-hit restaurants.
07:34 Mentioned a couple of these already.
07:35 I'm going to start right at the top.
07:37 Actually, the first one we haven't mentioned, but I think it's the best restaurant in the
07:40 western half of Minneapolis, and that's Chow Bella, which is in Edina.
07:46 It's run by Rick Webb, a well-known restaurateur.
07:49 Got multiple restaurants in town.
07:50 He's actually a member of my country club.
07:53 Really good guy.
07:54 I don't know him that well, but man, oh man, do I love his food.
07:57 And it's literally like going to Tuscany 15 minutes away from your house.
08:01 The food is just off the charts.
08:03 It's got a great outdoor bar, a little courtyard out there in the summertime, which is wonderful.
08:09 Always in high demand, always jam-packed.
08:12 But that would be my top restaurant recommendation for a visit to Minneapolis at any time, let
08:18 alone during a game weekend.
08:19 Any comments?
08:20 White Chow.
08:21 White Chow Bella.
08:22 Excellent choice.
08:23 Then I mentioned the two coves, Cove Edina and Cove Yzeta.
08:29 Again, linked to the west end and the landing.
08:32 Dean Glauze is the proprietor.
08:35 Great, great restaurants.
08:36 I think we need a membership card at Cove or something.
08:40 We spent so much freaking money at that restaurant.
08:44 We need a discount card or something.
08:46 You eat here 100 times, you get the next one free.
08:48 Well, we're up for a free meal.
08:51 The Edina location has really cool TVs sort of arranged around the bar so you can sit
08:56 there and watch a golf tournament or a football game, whatever.
09:00 Have a drink at the bar, you can eat at the bar.
09:03 Really, really good stuff.
09:04 It's suitable to take your grandmother to either of these places, your family, or just
09:09 your friends in for the game.
09:10 You can't go wrong at either Cove location in Minneapolis, Edina and Yzeta.
09:15 Now, you have to talk about steakhouses, and there are two that I think are noteworthy
09:19 here in Minneapolis.
09:21 Number one, Manny's in downtown, and the other is Lexington and St. Paul.
09:27 Both require a bit of wallet to enjoy those.
09:30 I would probably prioritize the Lexington over Manny's just because it's a little more
09:35 unique, a little more old school in its presentation.
09:40 Food is very, very good.
09:43 But if you're downtown and want to just walk to a great steakhouse, make sure you make
09:46 reservations in advance and get into Manny's.
09:48 Again, great bar scene.
09:49 But wait a second, if you're in Nebraska, do you really need to go to a steakhouse?
09:53 Good point.
09:54 Just go out in the backyard and punch out one of your cows or something.
09:59 You got a fresh steak right there.
10:04 But if you're in the mood for a steak, if you're a steak addict, those are both great
10:08 places.
10:09 I'm a Manny's fan.
10:11 I think they're only open for dinner though.
10:13 Do they open up for lunch again?
10:15 I think it's still only for dinner.
10:18 Google it.
10:19 I will check the interwebs.
10:20 Yeah.
10:21 Yeah, but you can't go wrong with either of those.
10:23 And again, we are not compensated by any of these guys.
10:26 This is the straight dope from us.
10:27 So you're not, we're not-
10:29 Straight dope from the straight dopes.
10:31 Exactly.
10:32 Now, here's another one.
10:36 If you're up here with your wife, your girlfriend, your parents, restoration hardware in Edina
10:41 is a great-
10:42 No, no, no, no, no.
10:45 The food is good, but the setting is horrible because you have to go through restoration
10:49 hardware.
10:50 Like not the outlet either, but the regular store where it's like, "This guy gets $7,000.
10:54 Could have it in three years.
10:56 Would you like one or would you like two?"
11:00 If you want to score bonus points, walk around with your wife or your mother or your grandmother
11:05 and pretend you like it.
11:08 My wallet flinches every time I go there for lunch.
11:11 It is.
11:12 It's like passing through a gauntlet.
11:15 It's just, you're like passing through a gauntlet.
11:17 Like just put some blinders on, then get upstairs and it's really nice, but don't look at anything
11:21 in the store.
11:22 It's on the third floor.
11:23 It's glass ceiling, garden type setting, fantastic atmosphere and pretty good food.
11:29 Great wine selection.
11:30 Yeah.
11:31 Oh, it's a great place.
11:33 It's a great place to go, but just be prepared.
11:34 You're going to have to walk through some expensive furniture.
11:38 All right.
11:39 Now, pizza.
11:40 If you're at the Aguirre Hotel and you want to just order out, again, the delivery services
11:44 are fantastic here.
11:46 So Instacart, what are some of the other ones, Bob?
11:51 The DoorDash is perfect.
11:52 DoorDash.
11:53 Yeah.
11:54 So-
11:55 Uber Eats.
11:56 Two of my favorites are Belludo.
11:57 I'm not sure Pizzeria Lola does DoorDash.
11:59 You might have to go there or pick up, but those Pizzeria Lola has been featured on Triple
12:05 D and Belludo is this new South American or Argentinian pizza place.
12:12 Oh my God, is it fantastic.
12:13 My kids go crazy over it.
12:15 Is it better than a Heggie's pizza in your basement at midnight?
12:18 No, there's nothing better than that.
12:20 Nothing better than a Heggie's pizza.
12:22 That's the other thing.
12:23 If you just want to go to any convenience store and buy a Heggie's and if you have a
12:28 pizza oven at your hotel or you can get them to cook it for you, that's just gold, right?
12:33 Heggie's is the go-to pizza here in Minnesota.
12:37 Holiday has a freezer full of Heggie's for you.
12:40 All right.
12:41 And then the last one is burgers.
12:43 There's a great burger place up here.
12:45 I don't know if any of you've heard of it.
12:47 I think there might be three locations now, but two I know for sure are Red Cow in Edina
12:52 in downtown.
12:54 Red Cow is just a fantastic burger place.
12:55 Won a ton of awards.
12:57 It's turkey burgers, won the best in show a few times.
13:00 So Red Cow is a solid burger place here in Minnesota.
13:04 Bob, am I missing anything?
13:06 Is that-
13:07 No, no, no, no, no, no.
13:10 No.
13:11 It's a ton of good food up in Minneapolis.
13:16 That kind of a city, if they give you good life, better.
13:20 But these are all solid recommendations.
13:22 Awesome.
13:23 All right.
13:24 Now, game day, very simple.
13:25 There's Husker Max, and again, this is the Husker Max away game fan activity podcast,
13:34 and the Husker Max website does list several watch locations, but the watch location you
13:39 should go to is downtown, and that's Lions Pub.
13:42 If you've ever been to Lions Pub, it's fantastic.
13:45 Lots of Huskers in there.
13:46 I love going to the watch sites because you meet so many people, and it's like, "Hey,
13:49 where are you from?
13:50 I grew up in Harnington.
13:51 I grew up in Norfolk," and blah, blah, blah.
13:52 Then you just go on from there, and there's always people you know and common.
13:56 Nebraska is like the big, small town gathering, and it's at any location.
14:01 So a lot of fun.
14:02 You know what I love to do?
14:03 I love to go back to Harnington with Jay and tell people I was an exchange student for
14:07 like a month.
14:08 They're like, "I don't remember you."
14:10 It's like, "Well, I don't remember you either," but it's so much fun to do.
14:16 Get a little hammered first and then tell them that.
14:18 That's just comedy gold.
14:20 So good watch site, Lions Pub, and then next to the stadium, this is I think a really unique
14:25 thing in Minnesota.
14:27 There's a Buffalo Wild Wings literally adjacent to the stadium.
14:32 You could hit it with a pitching wedge.
14:36 So it's fun to walk in there, always really crowded.
14:40 You'll probably fight to get service because it's going to be so crowded, but it is a very
14:45 cool thing to have a bar, especially a popular sports bar like that, located next to the
14:51 stadium.
14:52 Then Minnesota has the Harnington Bank Stadium has all the parking lots right around the
14:58 stadium, so the tailgating there is very good.
15:02 So we'll be in lot 53C, Yubi.
15:06 We're going to be in 53C.
15:07 There you go.
15:08 I paid a lot of money for that parking pass, so you're going to be getting a bill for that,
15:13 Uncle Bob.
15:14 No, I'm not.
15:15 I want you to do what you do best, which is to pay for my thought.
15:19 That's how it works out.
15:23 Does the Minnesota stadium sell boons?
15:26 Yes, yes.
15:27 It does.
15:28 This is one thing where Minnesota is well ahead of Nebraska.
15:32 They do sell boons in the stadium.
15:35 I think it's only beer.
15:37 I think there might be a bar with spirits in one of the end zones, but yeah, they do
15:43 sell it on site.
15:44 It's really cool.
15:45 And the most important question is, can you fit into the seat easier in Minnesota than
15:50 you can in the South section of Memorial Stadium?
15:53 Hey, dude, I'm getting smaller.
15:55 It's my little knee surgery.
15:57 It's not a question about you.
15:58 It's a question about the seat.
15:59 Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:01 It's a more accommodating stadium, let's put it that way.
16:07 It's going to be August 31st.
16:08 This is going to be nice weather and comfortable and should be a nice night.
16:14 But even if you're not coming to this game, if you stumbled across this, these are all
16:17 good things to do no matter what game you're going to, whether it's football, volleyball,
16:21 ice hockey, whatever.
16:23 These are all good spots to go to.
16:26 We did a good job keeping it to 10 minutes.
16:27 We're at 1830, Bob, here, so we got to wrap it up.
16:31 Remember, if you're looking for our podcast, just go to wherever you normally get your
