00:00 to see everybody again. It's been too long, but I thought today was a good
00:04 good practice. I really liked the mentality which the guys came out and
00:08 we had kind of a modified day a little bit. We spent the last
00:12 15 minutes getting an introduction into LSU, just some of the
00:17 structures, formations, different things that we wanted to give a glimpse to.
00:23 Tomorrow we'll get a little bit more into that, but today it's still just
00:27 about the speed. Speed, competition, you applying fundamentalist,
00:31 trying to put guys in situations. Got a two-minute drill, got
00:36 some good red zone work, third downs, try to have a good mix of it all.
00:41 I really just liked the way our guys competed and I thought Jordan had an
00:46 exceptional day. He's been great all camp, but you're seeing
00:50 his confidence continuing to grow. You see the development
00:55 with the relationship with receivers, the timing, the locations, and all those
01:00 things are continuing to get better. Defense was flying around.
01:05 There's some great plays on both sides of the ball. I really liked what I
01:09 saw today. We're going to continue to build upon it. You guys were able
01:13 to have a couple days off of their legs and showed up well today.
01:18 We're going to come back with a great practice tomorrow.
01:21 >> Jordan's good all the time, but when he has a day like this, do you think it's because the season's getting closer?
01:27 >> It's repetition. It doesn't matter how many
01:32 games you played or the number of priorities. As you build upon your
01:37 experiences, because every play is unique to itself.
01:41 When you have a better understanding of where the receiver is going to be,
01:44 you guys are working that. People talk about chemistry. Chemistry doesn't
01:47 happen just because you want it to. It's something that's got to be earned, it's got to be
01:51 developed. I think our guys have done a great job with that,
01:54 investing the time. You see those reps start to show up.
01:58 >> Hi Pat.
02:00 >> When preparing for a first-team opponent, obviously there's a standing agent, so many transfers and such.
02:04 How do you go about preparing for the guys that you don't have a familiar area?
02:09 >> We watch all of them. We try to do as good of a job as possible of
02:16 getting the personnel tendencies, characteristics, what are the things that
02:21 guys have done in the past. It might be in a totally different system, but we try
02:25 to get as much of a glimpse when some of our high school guys think
02:30 there's a chance that they can play. We try to make sure we get as much
02:33 early in the process. We just want to
02:36 give our players as much information. Then you can go out
02:41 there and you can have a plan, but be able to react to whatever you see.
02:44 There's still so much about us. We're gonna study film.
02:50 We're gonna prepare. We have a game plan. Especially in these first games,
02:54 there's just so many unknowns. They've got some new faces.
02:59 They've got some guys that will be playing that weren't there a year ago.
03:02 We're excited for what's ahead.
03:08 >> You mentioned this is a new situation for the sense of speed today. How is speed coming along?
03:12 >> He's pushing. He's pushing, working.
03:18 Just like every player, trying to establish that role for what it's
03:21 going to be as we get a bit closer to game day. It was some good things.
03:25 I thought I got a couple really good plays today. Still some things
03:29 we've got to clean up, but it's just like every other
03:33 receiver. You're pushing for that time. We've got a really talented
03:37 group. I like what I'm seeing.
03:41 >> Has he had one of his better practices?
03:45 >> I'd say probably his last seven days have been much improved.
03:51 I think he's getting in shape. Just to be honest, you come in as a
03:55 freshman, an early start freshman, getting yourself into
03:59 the overall condition of how we practice, the way that we push.
04:03 There's no off plays. You've got to bring it
04:07 mentally, even in a walkthrough, but
04:11 physically throughout the course of the practice. I think you're
04:15 seeing him getting in better shape. You see the speed, the explosiveness.
04:19 He's doing a better job finishing plays. I'm proud of his
04:23 progression. He's another one of those receivers that's trying to
04:27 put himself in a position to be able to have an opportunity to impact this team.
04:31 We'll see how he continues to progress.
04:35 >> [INAUDIBLE]
04:41 >> Shaim, I think he's growing up as well.
04:44 A guy that has played probably over 300 snaps last year.
04:48 He has experience, but now it's the role,
04:52 the magnitude of that role. He's so versatile because he
04:56 can play both safety positions. He can really move all over the field.
05:00 Now it's the details, communication. He put himself in the right
05:04 position to be able to make plays. I think he's definitely getting better.
05:08 >> Second scrimmage now. I know you have an idea of how things
05:12 are going to work with the running clock now. Is anything surprising in terms of
05:16 call-in plays, the amount of plays you're able to get in?
05:20 >> We operate at tempo. It's no real different
05:24 within the course of the game. It's going to shorten
05:28 the game of handful of plays. Those are things
05:32 that there's not too much change.
05:36 There's a couple of situations around the two-minute mark where the clock
05:40 will stop and when it won't stop. Just being aware of that,
05:44 but not a whole lot of structural change.
05:48 >> When you're viewed with so much, does anybody stand out on second viewing?
05:52 >> I really like,
05:56 I think I mentioned it even on Sunday, but the young defensive backs,
06:00 the way that they've continued to show up and make plays.
06:04 There was some open field tackles
06:08 that had to be made. I thought those guys are showing
06:12 their playmaking ability. We still need the consistency of being where they're supposed to be. Make sure
06:16 they're communicating. I'm really excited about that
06:20 group of young defensive backs.
06:24 I thought Pat,
06:28 Peyton had a couple of exceptional effort plays
06:32 that you want to see from your best players.
06:36 You can be disruptive, but even on a play that goes away,
06:40 just to see the effort in Chase, I thought he had a couple of those that you can really use
06:44 as examples of what it needs to look like. CJ Campbell
06:48 had a really good day. Coming out of the
06:52 backfield,
06:56 he made a couple of big plays.
07:00 Not only did he have one big play on the two-minute drill with a catch,
07:04 but he had a couple of huge blocks that helped spring plays open.
07:08 Definitely enjoyed seeing that.
07:12 It was a great opportunity for guys to put things on display.
07:16 I like the progression.
07:20 >> I was going to ask about some of the freshmen that might see playing time this year. Obviously, you have to be
07:24 an elite athlete, but what more earns that trust to get them
07:28 action? >> It's the consistency of communication, the maturity
07:32 of response to when something might not go well.
07:36 That toughness is hard-earned.
07:40 Can you come out and have something not go
07:44 your way and respond still in a positive action to get it
07:48 corrected and get better? That's one of the things that holds a lot of freshmen back.
07:52 They're great when it's all good, but when something bad happens, they're not able to
07:56 respond and make the correction, make the adjustment, be able to
08:00 rise up on that next situation. A lot of them will find themselves in a hole
08:04 and don't come out of it for a little while. I think we have a
08:08 really talented freshman class. They're going to be
08:12 a lot of fun to watch for years to come. We probably have, I'd say,
08:16 anywhere from eight to ten, maybe even a couple more that will have a chance
08:20 to play and help this football team this year.
08:24 >> All good? >> Thanks so much.
