Good news coming in for all Indians, as our Chandrayaan-3 is set to land on the moon on August 23 around 6pm in the evening. ISRO has also released pictures of the moon's south pole as captured by Lander Hazard Detection and Avoidance Camera. This is the camera that assists in locating a safe landing area.

Yesterday the second de-orbiting maneuver for the Lander Module of Chandrayaan 3 spacecraft was performed successfully. Now the orbit of the Lander Module is 25 km x 134 km. ISRO further released that the health of the Lander Module is normal.

Meanwhile, Russia is now out of the race to reach the moon's south pole. It happened after Russia lost Luna-25 lander after it attempted its own orbital adjustment on Saturday.

Russia had launched Luna-25 spacecraft after almost 50 years, in a race to land ahead of Indian spacecraft Chandrayaan-3. Russia’s mission was aimed to achieve the tag of being the first country to land on the lunar south pole of the moon. But now, with the failure of Russia’s Luna-25, it leaves India at the cusp of history.

In this whole race to the moon, Russia wanted to show that it is capable of delivering a payload to the moon. Russia’s aim with the launch Luna-25 program was not to study the moon. The goal of Russia was political competition between two superpowers– that are China and the USA, and a number of other countries that want to claim the title of space superpower, which includes India too.
This was a pet project of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the key to his efforts to make Russia a space superpower. But, now it has terribly failed, after Russia lost its lander. Now, whole world’s eye is on India’s Chandrayaan-3, and if India successfully touches down the moon’s south pole, then it will become the first country to reach the moon’s south pole.
