00:00 >> How you doing?
00:02 >> You've been here for a few years now.
00:05 How's this camp compared to the others you've been involved in?
00:10 >> I think this camp has been going smooth so far.
00:13 I think our urgency and our intensity to get better and continue to stay climbing.
00:20 I feel like, well, we got a game in three weeks.
00:23 I feel like it's a long time.
00:24 We have a lot of inconsistency.
00:26 And I say that's what's gonna happen when it comes to game time.
00:28 But leading up to the game, and now we need to prepare ourselves, put ourselves in the
00:32 best position.
00:32 So when it comes to time, when it's time to game time, we're literally executing on the
00:36 field for the camp and we're there so far.
00:38 We need to push more.
00:40 >> How quickly does that happen?
00:42 You get that consistency in the secondary, things mesh.
00:44 When do you think you wanna see that start to really click?
00:49 And do you think you're on the right path?
00:51 >> If I'm not mistaken, we had a week zero last year, so
00:54 our camp was a little bit longer this year.
00:56 It wasn't, camp wasn't as long as last year.
00:59 So the time frame a little bit smaller, learn stuff and get comfortable.
01:03 But I think, I wouldn't be able, you can't put a time frame on it.
01:07 It's just development, it just come on up, everything just start clicking again.
01:11 >> Who are the guys that are leading?
01:14 Not that far from you.
01:16 >> Yeah, Kevin knows, Duda's doing a great job.
01:20 Johnny is playing at a very high level.
01:25 Shaheen playing at a very high level.
01:26 Shaheen being very consistent.
01:30 Guys like that are doing a very good job,
01:31 not keeping the standard high, so everybody's at a good level.
01:36 >> What do you think about the younger guys?
01:38 You guys mentioned the older guys earlier,
01:40 how have you kind of bringing up the younger guys for the senior pro team?
01:44 >> Yeah, I think Conrad and Edwin are doing a real good job of coming in with
01:49 the tools and just learning the system.
01:51 They just got here not too long ago, but I feel like they're doing a good job
01:54 continuing trying to learn the play system, just trying to execute the plays.
01:59 >> For you going into your second year in the program,
02:01 what kind of advice can you give to these younger guys that are coming in?
02:04 >> It ain't about being perfect.
02:08 It's about just trying to be your best.
02:12 And if you don't be your best, just make sure you mess up at 100 miles an hour.
02:16 Other than that, just try to execute at your best.
02:18 >> You got to go up against Destinville a few times today.
02:21 What's it like kind of going up against him again since high school,
02:23 and what improvement have you seen?
02:25 >> Yeah, I think he's doing a very good job since he's been back,
02:28 consistently now working in with the line, so I'm happy for him as first defenders.
02:34 I think it's just good competition.
02:35 He just got back, so I feel like it's in my hands to push him to that standard and
02:40 compete with him at a high level so he know when he go out there,
02:43 they're not gonna take it easy on him.
02:45 >> What was your worst issue going up in the past?
02:48 >> It was really good.
02:50 It was unexplainable.
02:52 He's all on the floor.
02:54 We played each other in high school, we won three state championships together.
02:58 So he's been a captain now.
03:02 >> How do you think you did through in your second year,
03:05 when you were in fourth grade, how do you think you improved the most?
03:09 >> I think my skills have always been there.
03:10 I think my communication is top tier now.
03:13 I think I know all the plays, like the back of my hand.
03:17 I think I do a good job now getting everybody lined up and
03:19 just being a loud communicator and just bringing that intensity.
03:23 Like we're communicating, and then finishing my play just brings a lot of
03:25 energy around.
03:26 >> How much fun was it to play that game in New Orleans last year, and
03:32 how much are you looking forward to playing that again?
03:34 >> How much am I looking forward to it?
03:36 I mean, as of right now, we in camp.
03:37 But camp is the only thing that keep me looking forward to it,
03:41 cuz it's like if we prepare well in camp,
03:43 then I won't have nothing to worry about when that time comes.
03:45 But if we keep on up and down and up and down, and
03:49 then we're not putting ourselves in the best position when that time comes,
03:51 we're gonna be at a high level.
03:52 >> Are you a guy that focuses more on,
03:57 you keep talking about how much better you guys have to get?
03:59 >> Yeah. >> Are you a guy that focuses more on
04:01 the things, mistakes, or the good things?
04:05 >> It's just the mental things.
04:06 I mean, the good gonna be the good, the bad gonna be the bad.
04:09 But I just wanna clean up the bad as much as we can.
04:11 It's always gonna be a miscommunication or a bust coverage.
04:15 But I just don't want nothing to be critical of anything, let it be small.
04:18 You know what I mean?
04:18 So that's what I really want it to be.
04:21 If I could choose, I want it to be perfect.
04:23 >> You're really lazy, brother.
04:24 >> Lazy too.
04:24 [LAUGH] >> I'm just gonna say,
04:30 how close have you guys ever gotten to being as good as you wanna be?
04:35 >> I think we're still climbing.
04:40 I think we're not, we're getting there, but just me personally, I don't know.
04:48 I feel like we do a good job, but we could do more.
04:50 The talent we got on this defense, on this team, there need to be more.
04:54 There'll be more.
04:55 That's just my expectation, my standard.
04:57 >> During the practice, I heard some comments about communications.
05:02 >> Yeah.
05:02 >> So sad.
05:04 Is that coming from you, on the players, or is it coming from the coaches?
05:07 >> The coaches, down the players, players, but keep on shannon,
05:12 reiterating it around, so we got the reminder to just keep communicating.
05:17 >> The DBs and
05:18 wide receivers have had some really competitive battles throughout the preseason.
05:22 What have you thought about the competition between you guys, and
05:24 is there anyone you really like competing against during practice?
05:27 >> I think it's been real healthy.
05:29 I think the competition's been very healthy.
05:31 I think it's gonna put us in the best position, come the game time,
05:33 to go against other good receivers and things like that.
05:36 So I think we're gonna win a lot of one on ones this year.
05:39 And if we don't, it's just the next play.
05:42 You know what I mean?
05:43 So that's just what it is.
05:44 That's how it's gonna be.
05:46 >> I wanna take you back on communication.
05:50 Help me and the listeners understand what you mean by communication.
05:54 >> Yeah, getting everybody lined up, making sure everybody know what they doing.
05:58 Playing fast, being able to set people up to play fast and make plays.
06:03 >> Can you do that pre-snap?
06:06 >> Yes sir, I can.
06:07 >> And before you get in the field, is it verbal or?
06:10 >> It's verbal.
06:11 >> You've got to be verbal, yes sir.
06:13 >> I wanna ask you one more thing about AZ.
06:15 What's he like in terms of, when he came in last year,
06:18 getting to play a lot as a freshman?
06:19 Is he somebody that's always trying to learn?
06:20 What's he like?
06:21 >> He's a sponge.
06:22 He's always willing to get better.
06:23 I think he's very humble.
06:25 And I think his relationship with guys, the reason why he is the way he is.
06:30 But he show flashes of where he's gonna be in the future.
06:34 If he continue to come to practice with the right mindset.
06:37 >> What have been your impressions of getting out here with Coach Sertan during
06:42 the spring and now into the fall as well?
06:44 >> Yeah, I think that, I mean, the first impression was good.
06:48 I mean, he my coach, it's not like, it's like, wow, Coach Sertan.
06:53 You know what I mean?
06:54 Like at the end of the day, he's my coach.
06:55 We come out here to handle business and win games.
06:57 So it's like, it's a blessing to have a coach like that,
07:00 to kind of understand your perspective and who did it.
07:02 So whenever you talk to him, he kind of can relate and help you more.
07:05 You know what I mean?
07:06 >> What would you say has been his biggest impact on you?
07:11 >> His biggest impact would be just knowing that he's a football player,
07:16 you can relate to him more.
07:18 He actually played, so he could add things to your toolbox.
07:22 He would take things from your toolbox.
07:23 He knows how to suggest things to you that make you and
07:26 put you in the best position in football.
07:28 >> Yeah.
07:29 >> That's it.
