00:00 But today was another good day.
00:02 Really, the last two days, proud of the work that we've been able to get.
00:07 A lot of situations that really, I think I mentioned earlier, we've accelerated the situational
00:15 work.
00:16 Today we got some goal line, short yardage, back to back day in full pads.
00:20 It's five straight days of going after it.
00:23 I'm really pleased with what's showing up.
00:26 We've got to continue to improve in our execution.
00:31 But I think the guys, like I said yesterday, looking at the numbers, the output that they're
00:36 investing, they're preparing at a high level.
00:41 And a few things, they're late.
00:44 I mean, everybody on this field's hot.
00:46 Everybody's probably tired.
00:48 All those things are real.
00:49 But what we're willing to give in those situations.
00:54 We had a couple really good plays.
00:56 I want to feel the celebrations.
00:57 I want to feel the excitement for a teammate when they have success.
01:01 I want to feel the excitement for a teammate when they score a touchdown or have a big
01:05 walk or whatever that might be.
01:07 I think we can keep getting better there, especially when we are tired.
01:10 But I really like what I'm seeing from this team.
01:15 The ownership last night was really good, just continuing with the team building, who
01:20 we get to do it with.
01:21 I'm just really pleased with what's been accomplished here in two days on the field,
01:26 but also just what we're doing there off the field here in Jacksonville.
01:29 Are you surprised at all by what you get from your young safety so early in camp?
01:33 No, I mean, we felt really confident in who was coming in.
01:38 Ashland was somebody that was late in the process, seeing him in the spring.
01:44 I really like what, I think he's going to be an impressive player.
01:49 Conrad just had a great instinct for the ball.
01:55 He's still learning a lot of the communication, but he's working away at it.
01:58 Edwin, Jabril, you can take all of those.
02:02 That young group has really done a nice job.
02:04 Q, you kind of lose sight of because he was here this spring, but that young group is
02:08 really battling.
02:09 We felt confident in it.
02:11 It really kind of dictated some of the decisions on whether we would go and explore other people
02:18 that were out there, but I think we've got really good players.
02:22 They're on the fast track.
02:23 They've got to learn with an accelerated process, but I like the work that they're putting in
02:29 and the plays they're making when they get their opportunities.
02:31 What have you seen from some of the older players in the secondary kind of coaching
02:34 up those young guys and being patient with bringing them along?
02:40 That's what you want to see.
02:41 I mean, you've got guys that have done it, guys that have had success, guys that have
02:45 faced adversity, taking their opportunity to go help make a positive impact for somebody
02:52 else.
02:53 That's what teams are all about.
02:54 When you can see guys that they're competing every day in the room together, we've got
02:59 good guys.
03:00 I said that, but we've got good guys that have started here.
03:03 They're going to be pushing everything they have to continue to start here, but you see
03:09 them, those are the guys that are helping the competition at the position because it
03:14 just continues to elevate everybody.
03:17 You never know what it's going to look like.
03:18 You never know when your number's going to be called.
03:19 I created a situation today with the young receiver.
03:23 In the moment, right before the play, I threw him in.
03:26 He was ready.
03:27 You could sit there and be upset why you are or are not in, or you could just be focused
03:34 when your number's called and you go out there and execute.
03:37 That's part of camp.
03:38 That's part of the growth.
03:39 You've got to make guys uncomfortable.
03:40 That's why we come here.
03:41 I hope we've got great accommodations.
03:42 I hope they don't sleep very well.
03:43 I hope today we cut down the breeze a little bit and we felt it today.
03:53 It was just what we needed as a football team because those are the moments where your real
03:59 identity is going to show up.
04:00 I like what I'm seeing from this team so far.
04:01 You talk about wanting to make things uncomfortable and not pleasant, but the guys seem to improve
04:07 and they seem to embrace it.
04:08 They didn't say they looked forward to coming out to Jacksonville.
04:09 In fact, they seem to be embracing it.
04:10 What do you credit that to?
04:11 How fulfilling is it to see that day at all?
04:12 It is.
04:13 It's something we've ... It's been a process to get into that point.
04:14 From the first day we got here, we've had to go through some crap to get here.
04:26 I'm not sitting here saying, "Oh man, I hope I get my butt kicked."
04:29 You know what?
04:30 If I get beat on a play, I know how I'm going to respond.
04:34 I'm not looking for the easiest path to get to where we need to go.
04:38 We want everything ... We want all to be successful, but in those moments, that's the part of what
04:43 a game is.
04:44 How do you respond?
04:45 What are you going to do to make yourself better?
04:46 In that fourth quarter, you're going to be the one that finishes because of your belief,
04:49 because of maximizing the lessons that have been learned.
04:55 I think these guys, they have.
04:58 We train this way.
04:59 This is a 365 day a year process.
05:00 Not a whole lot of guys, honestly, love getting up and going to class and going to do all
05:07 those things.
05:08 When you're willing to push to be your best, you're willing to do the uncomfortable things
05:11 to make yourself better.
05:12 I think that's where that confidence starts to emerge.
05:15 I'm proud of our guys for that and how we get to embrace what tomorrow holds and not
05:21 see the future for everything today.
05:24 Last one.
05:25 Talent acquisition ... Paper, rock, scissors.
05:27 Talent acquisition ... Edge first.
05:29 Not an exact science in evaluation and acquisition.
05:34 How do you maybe pinpoint where you've done that so well?
05:38 It's not luck, right?
05:41 There's a method to the madness.
05:42 I think the key to success in college football is evaluation.
05:46 One hundred percent.
05:47 I believe that no matter what level you're playing at, coaching at.
05:53 It's evaluating your roster and how to best put guys in position to be successful.
05:57 It's about the recruiting process of what are you looking for?
06:02 There's times that guys' skill set ... They might be remarkable size, even speed, but
06:08 if their skill set ... Everybody's got issues.
06:13 We all have issues.
06:14 Making sure you're tying things together for what you're looking for within your team,
06:18 what you need in your room, and then being strong enough to be able to say no to some
06:24 and yes to others.
06:25 Nobody's going to hit a hundred percent.
06:28 We surely don't.
06:29 I really think it's a great deal of pride in not only finding the right jerseys that
06:36 are coming in, but the men behind the jersey.
06:38 I think the ones that work, they develop, they push, they care about who they get to
06:42 do it with.
06:43 The biggest, strongest, fastest guys that are like that, that's what we want.
06:44 I think we've been able to do that at a high level.
06:45 We've got to continue to go after the best that did our program.
06:50 Thank you guys.
06:57 Thank you, Coach.
