Are Sunderland spending enough money in the transfer market? From The Roar Podcast.
Transcript
00:00 There's a lot of talk about money and money being spent.
00:02 And I think people can sometimes get a little carried away
00:06 with some of the figures that are bandied around
00:08 in the championship.
00:09 But for me, I've seen a lot of very, very level-headed
00:13 friends and Sunderland fans say that we're not asking
00:17 for Sunderland to blow a gasket in the transfer window
00:21 and have a splurge for want of a better word.
00:25 But you're looking at players like Ella Sims,
00:27 who did go for a pretty penny, even Nathan Broadhead.
00:31 Obviously, Sunderland were perhaps a little put off
00:33 by his injury, but he did command a fairly decent fee
00:36 to get him to Ipswich.
00:39 Other players as well, there's a talk of a million-pound
00:42 loan fee for Tom Cannon, which you can argue all day
00:46 whether that's worth it or not.
00:49 A lot of Sunderland fans I'm talking to are saying,
00:52 "We don't want the club to overspend,"
00:53 but there's an acceptance that maybe at some point
00:56 they're going to have to spend some money.
00:58 I'm not saying they haven't spent any money
00:59 because quite clearly they have.
01:01 They've brought in players for fees,
01:03 but those fees may need to increase,
01:06 especially where it comes to a striker
01:07 because it is a premium position.
01:10 - Yeah, so I'm going to say a couple of things here
01:12 and hopefully people will get to the end
01:17 rather than just have a go at it
01:18 because the first bit will be much...
01:19 The first thing to say is that Sunderland's net spend
01:22 over the last four windows has been pretty significant.
01:25 - Yeah.
01:26 - It has been, it's just a fact.
01:29 Now, I do think there is a...
01:32 So for example, the loan fee you mentioned,
01:34 there is definitely a willingness from Sunderland
01:37 to pay pretty hefty loan fees.
01:40 Joe Gelhart had most of the Championship wanting them.
01:43 That was not cheap.
01:45 That was not cheap.
01:46 Sunderland, after Stewart got injured,
01:48 were prepared to go and spend another massive loan fee.
01:51 I think it's pretty well known that they had four strikers
01:54 that were trying to sign a loan from the Premier League
01:55 on January.
01:56 Some of them would have come with big loan fees.
01:58 And one of the players they were looking at
02:01 was Julian Enciso, who then went on and scored
02:04 loads of goals for Brighton,
02:05 but he didn't want to come down to the Championship.
02:08 Fair play worked out pretty well for him,
02:10 let's be honest.
02:11 But the point is that there is definitely
02:13 a willingness to spend.
02:14 What's also absolutely true is that the fundamental reason
02:17 why Sunderland are finding it much harder
