Transcript
00:00 Hi, I'm Aino.
00:02 And I'm Caroline.
00:03 And we are Icona Pop.
00:05 Welcome to our mind massage.
00:08 We're gonna take you through a sound journey
00:13 using some of our favorite things.
00:15 [sound of a blender]
00:42 [sound of a glass]
00:49 Don't you like the sound of that?
00:51 It's the sound of life.
00:54 [laughs]
00:55 And party.
00:57 [sound of a glass]
01:03 We just love the sound of
01:06 when you open up a beer
01:08 and pour it up
01:10 because that's like, I mean,
01:14 festivals and wherever we are,
01:18 when we play shows,
01:20 we usually have like one beer
01:22 at least before we start.
01:25 So it's like...
01:26 Or after.
01:27 Yeah.
01:28 We've been writing songs.
01:30 We always go to a pub and have a beer.
01:33 It's the best thing to kind of relax.
01:37 Or in the sauna.
01:38 In the sauna.
01:39 The beer tastes very good in a sauna.
01:42 And you can also pour it over,
01:44 what do you call it?
01:46 The agrigat.
01:47 The hot stones.
01:48 The hot stones, and it smells like bread.
01:51 Mm.
01:53 We are from Sweden.
01:55 Stockholm.
01:56 Yeah.
01:57 Stockholm is a very small city.
02:00 I mean, comparing to a lot of cities here in the state.
02:04 So I think if you're good at something,
02:07 the word spreads pretty quickly
02:09 and you get to write with a lot of good people.
02:12 I also think the Swedish mentality,
02:16 like the weather in Sweden,
02:18 the winters are very long.
02:21 So you get more time to be bored
02:25 and creative, like,
02:27 we're just in the studio,
02:29 working, working, working.
02:30 And then during like the two months of summer,
02:34 everyone go crazy.
02:37 We really appreciate sunshine.
02:39 You can really spot a Swedish person here in LA
02:44 just standing like this.
02:47 In the sunshine.
02:48 Because it's like nothing we take for granted.
02:53 Midsummer is something we celebrate in Sweden.
02:57 In the end of June,
02:59 people usually pick flowers
03:02 and put them under their pillow.
03:04 Seven flowers.
03:05 Seven flowers to be exact.
03:07 And then you dream about your future partner.
03:13 Yeah, your crush, your future crush.
03:16 And then we dance around a pole
03:20 that looks like a penis.
03:23 Yes, it's true.
03:25 That's also covered in flowers
03:28 and you're wearing flowers in your hair.
03:31 And you do the frog dance.
03:35 I mean, the more I talk about it,
03:37 I realize how weird it sounds.
03:39 Yeah, it's pretty crazy actually.
03:41 Yeah, but I love Midsummer.
03:44 It's one of my favorite things.
03:47 We were a nameless band for quite a long time.
03:50 And we didn't really feel like any name would fit us.
03:55 So at first it was just Caroline and I know.
03:58 But Caroline's mom was at her friend's place
04:04 and they were Italian.
04:06 And she was talking about me and Caroline
04:10 and the music we were doing.
04:12 They were like, "Oh, so they're gonna be the next pop icons."
04:17 Which is Icona Pop in Italian.
04:20 And my mom was like, "That sounded cool."
04:23 So she sent it to us and we're like,
04:26 "Wow, we're Icona Pop. It sounds really cool."
04:29 It sounds cool.
04:30 And thank you, mom.
04:31 Yeah, thank you, Lena.
04:33 We love eating crisp bread for breakfast.
04:37 It's a very Swedish thing.
04:39 It is.
04:40 Now which one should we take?
04:42 Which one should we take?
04:43 Let's open this one.
04:44 Yeah.
04:45 [crunching]
05:03 [crunching]
05:19 And you need to have a lot of butter
05:22 so it gets into the holes of the crisp bread.
05:25 [crunching]
05:37 Just listen to that crisp.
05:39 It's perfect.
05:40 [crunching]
05:44 I think the most surprising thing we've learned
05:49 from being in a band is how different we are.
05:54 We are very different and now we see it more as a good thing
05:59 that we complement each other really well.
06:03 Otherwise we wouldn't have still been in a band after 14 years.
06:07 True.
06:08 One of the most embarrassing things was when
06:13 I ripped my pants open on stage.
06:16 So I had to go behind stage and find something I could tie
06:22 so no one would see my butt.
06:24 That was very stressful.
06:26 It was like the second song into the live show.
06:29 And the Swedish prince was at that show.
06:33 I also fell between two speaker ones
06:38 because it was so much fog on stage.
06:41 And I started crying a little bit.
06:44 But then I realized no one saw me because it was still so foggy.
06:47 So I just jumped right back up.
06:50 I was like no one saw it.
06:52 So it was just embarrassing for me.
06:56 Ah, the cheese.
06:58 Such an important part of the crisp bread topping.
07:03 The experience.
07:04 Yeah.
07:05 And crisp bread is also called "kineckebröd" in Swedish.
07:10 [crunching]
07:12 Strong.
07:13 I am having a little bit of a problem opening this but
07:16 bear with me.
07:18 [crunching]
07:35 Perfect. Otherwise use your gold teeth.
07:39 And for this cheese you need a "ostivel".
07:43 [crunching]
07:51 Wow.
07:52 [crunching]
08:09 I love cheese.
08:10 For us it's like such a Swedish thing to eat crisp bread
08:15 with butter and cheese.
08:19 And Swedish cheese is very good.
08:22 And also you almost never buy it already sliced.
08:28 You always slice it yourself.
08:30 Yeah.
08:31 With a cheese slicer.
08:34 [crunching]
08:35 "Where Do We Go" is a song that we
08:39 wrote a pretty long time ago.
08:43 Just before the pandemic.
08:45 Yeah.
08:46 And we really liked it when we wrote it
08:48 but we didn't finish it up until like in the end of this album process.
08:53 And the song is about
08:56 like when you realize that you're in a really good spot
09:00 in your life
09:02 and you're like, "Where are we gonna go from here?"
09:06 "How are we gonna like top this?"
09:09 "This is so great."
09:11 "I wanna keep on moving forward but at the same time I just wanna stay here"
09:15 "because it's almost too good to be true."
09:18 Our album "Club Romantic" is coming out
09:22 early September.
09:24 We are so excited.
09:25 That's gonna be our second full-length album
09:28 in 14 years.
09:31 And it's a club release.
09:32 That's crazy.
09:33 [laughing]
09:35 Wow.
09:36 It feels a little bit surreal.
09:38 Yeah.
09:39 We are very proud over this album.
09:43 It's very clubby
09:46 which is a little bit weird because we wrote a lot of this album
09:51 at the most quiet time during our career.
09:55 But I guess the whole club romantic
09:59 is almost like we created our own sweet escape
10:04 about this like dream club
10:07 that was exactly how we wanted it to be.
10:10 And then we wrote all these songs
10:14 that we just thought fit into that world.
10:18 I think most of the songs we recorded in our studio in Stockholm.
10:24 A couple of songs we actually wrote in London.
10:28 But most of the songs on the album was in Sweden.
10:32 And we also did a lot of songs in the first studio
10:37 where Iconapop first started recording.
10:41 Yeah.
10:42 That was weird.
10:44 That was so weird.
10:45 Like being in the same spot after 14 years
10:49 recording during lockdown.
10:51 Yeah.
10:52 But I'm happy we went back to Sweden
10:56 to write this album because
11:01 there's so many great producers
11:03 and also the dance music scene in Sweden is
11:07 very inspiring right now.
11:09 What do you have in your bag?
11:19 A lot of shit.
11:21 Yeah.
11:23 Of course I have my wallet.
11:27 Hose spray.
11:31 Allergy tablets.
11:36 Some candy.
11:46 Some candy if you get really tired.
11:54 In case of an emergency, allergic shock,
12:08 I'm prepared for everything we have
12:11 so we can survive anything.
12:13 It's amazing.
12:16 Oh, of course.
12:18 Sunglasses.
12:21 Always ready for every situation.
12:29 Our dear fans who are the best in the world,
12:34 they can expect an album, a lot of music,
12:39 our new live show that we've been building now
12:42 which involves almost like a little spaceship
12:47 with gear, with a lot of electric gear.
12:50 Also us just being, trying to be
12:55 in a lot of places all around the world
12:59 to see our fans.
13:01 We're so excited about that.
13:03 The best self-love advice is really
13:07 to not be too hard on yourself
13:10 when you're basically trying the best you can.
13:14 Sometimes when I have a bad day,
13:18 I just go to sleep.
13:22 That's a good one.
13:24 'Cause you know that usually the bad day
13:27 is just one, hopefully.
13:29 So sleep gives you rest.
13:31 Sometimes when you mess up
13:34 and you think that people care so much
13:38 and think so much and talks about it,
13:42 they actually don't.
13:44 People don't care that much about you.
13:46 No, the world doesn't evolve around you.
13:49 So when you make mistakes, it's fine.
13:53 You survive.
13:55 Thank you so much for coming to our mind massage
14:01 and make sure to check out our new single,
14:04 "Where Do We Go?" from here.
14:08 From here.
14:10 Allergy tablets.
