00:00 Are you ready?
00:10 I've been waiting 8 months.
00:13 Are you ready?
00:14 Let's light this candle.
00:15 Welcome back to the Carriker Chronicles, the people's show where we check the pulse of
00:20 the Mexican nation, brought to you by DPS Concrete Construction, your local concrete
00:25 experts.
00:26 Check them out at DPSConstruction.net.
00:29 Ladies and gentlemen, if you're as excited for the return of the Carriker Chronicles
00:32 as I am, smash that like button.
00:36 If you're excited for the interview today with Prince of Mucamara, the one I got coming
00:39 up in a couple days with Roy Hulu or Tom Osborne, smash that like button.
00:43 But real quick, I want to give a shout out to my wife Angie, Ashley Spitznagel, and Andrea
00:49 Schroeder for coming up with this, hopefully, pretty cool banner that you all see behind
00:55 me.
00:56 So hopefully you all enjoy.
00:57 I want to give a shout out to them.
00:58 But today, I want to get to our very special guest.
01:02 I don't see this man do a lot of interviews.
01:03 My first two guests, Prince, Roy, Husker legends, no doubt.
01:08 But I wanted to bring on guys who don't do a lot of interviews and chat with them.
01:11 So I'm looking forward to this one.
01:13 So we got a former Super Bowl champion, unanimous All-American, two-time first team All-Big
01:19 12 performer and a Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, Mr. Prince of Mucamara.
01:24 How you doing, my friend?
01:25 Prince of Mucamara, "Man, that's an awesome intro, man.
01:28 I'm doing well.
01:29 How are you?"
01:30 I'm glorious, man.
01:31 I'm excited.
01:32 This is the inaugural Carriker Chronicles show coming back on its own after eight freaking
01:36 months.
01:37 I'm pumped.
01:38 But I want to start asking you questions.
01:40 Because here's one of the questions that popped into my mind immediately after you and I texted.
01:44 You said you were going to come on the show.
01:45 That '09 Nebraska defense.
01:48 You can argue it's absolutely one of the best ever.
01:50 You could argue it's potentially the best ever.
01:52 But just some of the stats.
01:54 You guys gave up an average of 10.4 points per game.
01:57 Number one in the nation that year.
01:58 Just for comparison, the three national championship teams in the 90s.
02:02 Awesome defenses.
02:03 But '97, they gave up 16.5 points per game.
02:06 '95, 13.6 points per game.
02:08 And '94, 12.5 points per game.
02:11 So phenomenal defenses, but just by comparison, your guys' stats was awesome.
02:15 What made that '09 defense for the Huskers so good?
02:18 Man, I mean, obviously, Sue is what made us go.
02:25 Sue just led the way.
02:27 The way he approached the game and approached practice, I think that really just showed
02:33 guys on the defensive side of the tone that was going to be set.
02:39 We really just rallied behind him.
02:44 He plays the game unlike anybody other with just how tenacious.
02:52 And he definitely made our jobs in the back end a lot easier.
02:56 And not to discredit our guys in the back end, the DBs, I feel like we made his job
03:02 easier, also.
03:05 And you know how it works with the D-line and DBs.
03:07 We work hand in hand.
03:09 The D-line rushes and it cuts our time in covering.
03:14 And on the back end, if we do a good job in locking down our guys, it's going to enable
03:20 the D-line to get to the quarterback faster.
03:22 That makes a lot of sense.
03:24 But here, man, I like to ask the tough questions, the hard-hitting questions.
03:27 Are you ready for this one?
03:29 Of course.
03:30 Should there have been one second put back on the clock versus Texas in that championship?
03:35 Man, man, man.
03:37 Yes, and what's funny is because I got to know Colt McCoy for a little bit.
03:43 And the thing is, I did not know, going to Nebraska, I didn't know how big that rivalry
03:50 was.
03:51 I didn't know really anything about UT and, you know, just the politics of the game.
03:58 I'm not saying that the game of football is rigged at all.
04:03 However, I do believe that there are calls that can go in favor of a team just for financial
04:13 gain.
04:14 So, like, it would make sense for, you know, Texas to, what's that called, to get that
04:26 extra second because they went to the national championship right after that, right?
04:30 Played Alabama, yep.
04:31 Exactly.
04:32 So, I mean, us beating them and I think we would have went to the Fiesta Borg or something,
04:37 it wouldn't be, I don't know, it wouldn't be as great for the Big 12 and stuff like
04:42 that.
04:43 But no way should there have been a second left on that clock.
04:51 But still, I mean, that was a great game.
04:54 And the thing is, because I didn't know, you know, just the level of heighten of how
05:02 big that game was.
05:03 Like, it didn't, like I wasn't moved by how big of a game it was.
05:09 But looking back now and re-watching it, like, man, that was a big game.
05:13 It's the Big 12 National Championship.
05:17 It's in Jerry's world.
05:20 And we're playing against UT.
05:22 And UT's one of the best, but I feel like everyone on our defense, like, we weren't
05:27 really moved by the moment.
05:30 We've been destroying fools all year and it was just a game to us.
05:35 Now in 2007, after you arrived on campus, you actually contemplated playing basketball
05:40 as well as football for a short time.
05:42 Okay, and there was a chance you were going to play running back for a while.
05:46 Obviously, cornerback worked out pretty well for you.
05:48 But here's my question.
05:50 How long after you arrived on campus, former Husker linebacker Corey McEwen, who was a
05:54 pup when I was a vet there, but he was a veteran when you first came in, he described you as
05:58 a newcomer with a lot of personality.
06:01 All right, so my question for you is, who's a former Husker or former Husker teammate
06:07 that you know that has a lot of personality?
06:10 Man, dude, we had tons of guys.
06:13 I mean, Roy.
06:14 Yes.
06:15 We had a guy by the name of Brandon Kenny.
06:21 We called him BK.
06:24 Even Lydon Murtha.
06:25 Yep.
06:26 Lydon Murtha, like, Niles Paul.
06:29 It's crazy because you know how it is in that locker room.
06:33 It's just like, it'll bring, like, it can become infectious.
06:40 Guys who might not really talk, but because of the music and guys opening up, it's guys
06:47 just come out of their shell.
06:49 So, I mean, a lot of stories come through my head.
06:51 Especially big Murtha, even Slossin, Sloss Daddy.
06:56 Like all these guys really showed personality.
07:00 And then McEwen, I'm trying to think what did I do to make an impression on him.
07:08 You know what I remember about Corey?
07:09 He used to walk around like he was killing ants.
07:11 Like, he would just really extra push hard into the ground.
07:14 Lydon, he was young when I got there.
07:16 That is one of the most interesting people I've ever been around.
07:20 Roy Hulu, I actually interviewed him on Tuesday and there's a naked foam rolling story I'm
07:24 going to ask him about when he was in the DC locker room.
07:29 You got any stories you want to share, man?
07:31 Anything that comes to mind?
07:32 Man, yes.
07:33 You know what?
07:34 There was a, so we had brought boxing gloves into the locker room.
07:44 And so, like, guys were just going at it with boxing gloves.
07:51 And I know that there's a video.
07:52 So Will Compton, I don't know if he's going to release it, but I know he has a video of,
08:01 I think it was either me and Sue, me and Sue, me and Sue, me and Sue boxed and stuff like
08:09 that.
08:10 And I'm not going to say who won.
08:11 I'm not going to say who won.
08:12 I was going to ask.
08:13 But it was pretty interesting.
08:14 It was pretty fun.
08:15 All right.
08:16 I like that.
08:17 That's a lot of fun.
08:18 That's fun stuff right there.
08:19 Now, there's a lot of emphasis put on recruiting and rightfully so.
08:24 Our new head coach here at the University of Nebraska, Matt Ruhl, prides himself on
08:27 finding diamonds in the rough and then developing them and even getting them to the NFL and
08:32 to the pros.
08:33 Now, you're a guy who was a three-star recruit in high school and you turned yourself into
08:36 a first-round draft pick.
08:38 Okay.
08:39 What was the biggest key for you being able to do that?
08:43 I would say number one, Dobson.
08:46 James Dobson, our strength coach, he, coach, so you know when a new coach comes in, they
08:52 have, like, their pillars, right?
08:54 Whether it's discipline, loyalty, commitment, la-da-da-da.
09:00 One of Coach Bo's was compete in everything you do.
09:04 And so, Coach Dobson carried that out and we saw those in the drills, in the weightlifting
09:10 movement.
09:11 So, just competing, like, whether it's a lift, whether it's a race, like, everything was
09:18 just competing, competing, competing.
09:20 And that really drove home in me.
09:23 And so, even though I came from running back, but now I'm at a new position, it's like,
09:29 compete.
09:30 Like, it doesn't matter, I'm experiencing a little bit of adversity.
09:35 Like the same approach that I had at running back, take it to the DB position.
09:41 So it was just really just competing and I really learned the position.
09:46 I watched guys like Joe Hayden, I was able to watch his tape.
09:50 There was a DB out of Oklahoma by the name of Brian Jackson and I was trying to learn
09:55 how to play the DB position just because I'd never played it before.
09:58 And then, so, one game I think really, really, like, encouraged me the most and kind of put
10:08 me on the map was that Oklahoma game at home.
10:12 And Landry Jones threw a route, I intercepted it and right before I scored, my guy, Phillip
10:19 Dillard, takes me out.
10:21 But I think that game is when, wow, I got something here.
10:26 And I just rolled with it.
10:28 Nice.
10:29 I was actually at that game, I remember watching it.
10:31 That was a pretty cool, fun game to watch.
10:33 Now I want to give the folks at home a heads up.
10:35 August 15th, two weeks from today, we will be launching the website, CarrikerChronicles.com.
10:41 There's going to be a plethora of stuff.
10:43 Again, just a fun word to say, I love to say it, a plethora of times.
10:46 We're going to have merchandise, you can check out all the Carriker Chronicles, the Big Ten
10:50 show with my co-host Jeff Tern, where the H is silent that I'm doing.
10:53 We got 93.7 the tickets.
10:55 We got the highlight tapes I've been posting throughout the summer.
10:57 If you missed them, go check it out.
10:59 I'm going to have Carriker's crew, where Ashley Spitznagel is going to put up her art.
11:02 John Johnston, who is not boring, going to be putting up his videos.
11:05 Connor Hayden from Corn Craze is going to be putting up his stuff.
11:08 August 15th, two weeks from today, ladies and gentlemen.
11:11 Alright, Prince, I got one last question for you, and it's a two-parter.
11:15 Alright, will Nebraska beat Colorado this year, and what will Nebraska's final record
11:22 be?
11:23 Just a way too early win/loss prediction record for you, if you don't mind.
11:26 How many games does Nebraska have, sorry?
11:29 We'll have 12, and then hopefully a bowl game, if not more, but hopefully a bowl game too.
11:33 But at least 12.
11:35 Yeah, I mean, I really, really love and respect Coach Matt Rule.
11:41 We have rapport.
11:43 Back in my Giant days, he was a defensive assistant there, and I remember coaches would
11:51 go up and give presentations, and you can just always tell that Coach Rule was going
11:57 to be head coach at a high level, just because the respect that he demands when he goes up
12:09 and speaks and stuff like that.
12:12 You can tell players really buy in.
12:14 So I know he's going to have his team rolling.
12:16 I would say they're definitely going to go above 500, and I would say 8-4.
12:26 And then I think we will 100% beat Colorado.
12:32 I mean, anything can happen.
12:36 I mean, Deion's done some amazing things with programs, but I mean, they were 1-12 last
12:42 year, or they were 1-whatever last year, and they haven't won.
12:49 I mean, I know they do have a new recruiting class and stuff like that, but at the end
12:54 of the day, we're Nebraska and they're Colorado.
12:58 So I really think that Matt Rule's going to have the guys fired up, and we're just going
13:05 to play tougher.
13:06 We're coming back to that Nebraska defense.
13:11 And I know my answers are long-winded, but it's so funny.
13:13 This last game I have, I was rocking my Nebraska shirt yesterday, and I'm out here in Arizona,
13:20 and a former Big Red fan said, "Big Red's not dead."
13:25 And I'm like, "Man, I love that.
13:28 We're not dead."
13:29 I know we've had some tough years, but we're not dead, and I think we're going to see that
13:34 this year.
13:35 AD: Dude, my favorite quote from all the interviews I've done so far, "At the end of the day,
13:41 we're Nebraska and they're Colorado."
13:44 That is the quote of the day right there, man.
13:45 I love that one.
13:46 I want to thank you for joining me, I appreciate it.
13:50 Husker Nation, I'm so happy to be back with the Carriker Chronicles.
13:53 Tune in for my next interview, which is Roy Huluth and Tom Osborne, and coming up down
13:57 the road I'm going to have Tony White, the D-coordinator, Marcus Satterfield, the offensive
14:00 coordinator, I'm going to have the governor of Nebraska, Larry "The Cable" Guy, Rex
14:03 Burkhead, I'm pumped.
14:06 It's a star-studded cast of folks that were kind enough to join me along with Prince here
14:11 on the Carriker Chronicles.
14:12 So do me a favor, Husker Nation, all you fine folks at home, comment below.
14:16 Let me know if you enjoyed this interview.
14:18 Let me know if you love that quote, "At the end of the day, we're Nebraska and they're
14:22 Colorado just as much as I do."
14:23 And also, let me know what questions you'd like me to ask my next two interviews, Roy
14:27 Huluth and Coach Tom Osborne.
14:29 Until next time, Go Big Red!
14:31 And always remember…
14:32 Throw them bows!
