Touchless touch screens – A life-changing innovation

Touchless technology using AI and sensors to operate devices without physical contact, is being widely adopted in Japan for its public hygiene and security benefits. A new innovation is the 'aerial display' – a technology that makes images appear in the air. It doesn't just look like an SF movie effect, but you can use it as a virtual touch panel as well. This technology opens up a new world of contactless applications, from suppressing infectious disease to enhancing all kinds of entertainment.

00:06 Advances in AI and sensor technologies make it possible to operate devices without actually touching them.
00:13 Touchless technologies now increase security and hygiene in many aspects of our lives.
00:20 [Music]
00:24 Here's one of the most promising new applications.
00:27 From this angle, he seems to be waving his fingers in the empty air.
00:31 But if we look from his point of view, we see a very different picture.
00:37 [Music]
00:40 Called an aerial display, this groundbreaking technology was developed in Japan.
00:45 [Music]
00:49 There's no physical screen. The image floats in mid-air.
00:55 It looks like something from a science fiction movie, but this technology is here now and already in widespread use.
01:01 [Music]
01:06 It looks like a real globe is floating in the air above my palm,
01:11 but what's unique about this technology is that there is nothing actually there, just the image.
01:17 Look how I can pass my hand right through it. See? There's nothing there.
01:21 [Music]
01:24 The heart of the system is this mirrored plate.
01:27 [Music]
01:30 Light projected from a display is reflected through the plate to create three-dimensional images that appear to float in the air.
01:37 [Music]
01:43 That's impressive enough, but there's more.
01:46 [Music]
01:50 These aerial displays can also respond to finger movements, allowing them to act as virtual touch panels.
01:57 [Music]
02:04 Infrared sensors detect the position of the user's finger in space.
02:09 Virtually touching the floating image produces the same effect as actually touching physical keys.
02:16 [Music]
02:21 The current pandemic situation has generated many inquiries from customers attracted to touchless operation because of its hygiene advantages.
02:30 We expect this technology to find wide applications in public spaces, replacing touch panels and other physical interfaces.
02:39 [Music]
02:41 It's more important than ever to reduce the need to touch our surroundings and to maintain hygiene in public spaces.
02:48 Aerial displays are seen as an ideal solution.
02:51 [Music]
02:52 The advantages of touchless operation are obvious in places like corporate entrance lobbies, where large numbers of people must constantly use the same device.
03:01 [Music]
03:04 Less obviously, these displays are inspiring innovation in the art world.
03:08 This exhibition demonstrates the potential of the new technologies.
03:12 [Music]
03:14 As well as the actual Ukiyo-e prints, these world famous creations by Hokusai are also rendered as ultra high resolution digital images.
03:22 [Music]
03:25 It looks like a simple video, but she is actually controlling the image using an aerial display.
03:32 [Music]
03:35 Using these displays lets us explore pictures in great detail, interacting with them without touching.
03:42 There's never been such an intuitive and immersive way to enjoy art.
03:47 [Music]
03:51 We protect these old Ukiyo-e prints by preserving them under glass, but this obviously makes them harder to see.
03:57 An aerial display lets you get as close as you like and inspect the smallest details.
04:02 Thanks to touchless technology, everyone can now fully enjoy the beauty of this art.
04:08 [Music]
04:11 Orders for these aerial displays are now flooding in from all over the world.
04:15 From keeping us safe from disease, to inspiring new forms of entertainment, Japanese touchless technology is changing our lives.
