  • last year

00:00 His name has not ceased to return since the announcement, this Wednesday, July 26, 2023,
00:13 of a "movement of humor" of some elements of the Nigerian presidential guard.
00:17 General Omar Tshiani, a trusted man of former President Mahamadou Issoufou, has been in
00:23 charge of the Nigerian army's elite corps since 2015, in charge of the security of the
00:28 head of state.
00:29 He has put in motion the military who tried in 2015 and 2021 to seize power.
00:34 Mohamed Bazoum, who succeeded Issoufou at the head of Niger in 2021, had confirmed it
00:40 to this strategic post.
00:41 The causes of the revolt of this cacique of the Nigerian army are not known, but several
00:47 sources advance the desire of the current head of state to reorganize his security
00:51 system by separating himself from General Tshiani.
00:54 The attempts to negotiate between the mutins and President Bazoum have, for the moment,
00:59 not been crowned with success.
01:00 The latter would be doing well, according to sources from his entourage, but his movements
01:06 are limited and the palace, where he is still held, is not easy to access.
01:10 Only part of the Nigerians tried to demonstrate their support for Bazoum on Wednesday, but
01:15 were dispersed by summons.
01:17 The next day, other citizens took part for the Putschists gathering in front of the
01:22 National Assembly.
01:23 The resistance must also face the decision of the Army Chief of Staff, EMA.
01:28 In a statement published Thursday morning, the EMA decided to "subscribe to the declaration
01:34 of the Defense and Security Forces".
01:36 The military command of the Nigerian army forces, motivated by the "concern to preserve
01:41 the physical integrity of President Bazoum and his family, wants to avoid a murderous
01:46 confrontation between the different forces and preserve cohesion within the Defense
01:50 and Security Forces.
01:51 General Tshiani was not seen among the group of soldiers who declared on national television
01:57 to have seized power from President Bazoum to the opposite of his adjutant, Colonel-Major
02:01 Adamou Ibro.
02:02 The Nigerian army has experienced several coups d'état since the country's independence
02:06 in 1960, the last one dating back to 2010.
02:10 This political instability considerably hinders the economic and social development of Niger,
02:16 one of the poorest countries on the planet.
02:18 The current situation is therefore closely followed by the international community, which
02:23 calls on all parties to refrain and to the peaceful resolution of the crisis.
