00:00 Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen, we warmly welcome His Excellency Ferdinand Romuald S.
00:08 Marcos, Jr., President of the Republic of the Philippines, to Malaysia.
00:12 We are indeed very honored by your presence here today, Your Excellency.
00:17 We will begin the joint press conference today with a statement by the Prime Minister of
00:21 Malaysia followed by a statement by the President of the Republic of the Philippines.
00:26 President Marcos, Jr., who I refer to as "Bom Bom" and more as a personal friend, it is of
00:37 course a rare privilege and honor to host you.
00:41 Welcome to Malaysia.
00:42 It has been a long journey of good bilateral relations between Malaysia and the Philippines,
00:51 but your presence here today, which is quite unique in the sense that we have not had too
00:59 many presidents visiting Malaysia on a bilateral basis, so it is something really meaningful
01:05 and pertinent to Malaysia and all Malaysians to see our great neighbor, the land which
01:14 has great historical bonds, culturally, historically, and the land of our great precursor of the
01:23 Asian Renaissance, Jose Rizal.
01:26 So I must first, of course, take this opportunity to thank you and your delegation for this
01:34 visit.
01:35 It is the only way also to strengthen this bond.
01:40 We have discussed issues relating to bilateral issues of trade, investments.
01:47 There has been a slight increase in investments in trade, but there is certainly huge potential
01:55 which you must explore, the strength in the Filipino economy, in your capacity in the
02:05 business sector, and also here, and both business communities should interact more and jointly
02:16 take measures to enhance bilateral relations and economic trade, at the same time help
02:25 resuscitate our economy during post-COVID era.
02:31 We also take note of the fact that there has been phenomenal progress in the Philippines
02:40 post-COVID under your leadership, and we would certainly utilize this experience in trying
02:49 to enhance their collaboration.
02:53 We mentioned also the potential for halal industry in both countries.
02:57 We will certainly do our utmost in terms of certification, but I think jointly we should
03:08 undertake some effective measures to ensure that the halal industry can penetrate more
03:16 effectively into the Middle Eastern market in particular.
03:22 On the regional and international cooperation, our basis here is of course bilateral, which
03:28 I think is very, very important.
03:30 Although President Makos is slightly senior than me in terms of his holding office, he
03:36 has been senior because he has enormous experience, and amazingly as the YPG, the king, said today
03:43 to me that we share other personal experiences, ups and downs, and I used to joke here, more
03:49 downs than ups.
03:51 And now we are here together, and with this experience we certainly enhance the understanding
03:57 and collaboration.
03:59 We did touch upon Myanmar to strengthen the five-point consensus of ASEAN, but also give
04:05 some flexibility, room and space for neighboring countries to engage on an informal basis without
04:13 sacrificing the issues of human rights and the treatment of minorities, and particularly
04:20 Rohingyas and other Burmese minorities in Myanmar.
04:25 And finally, I think the issues that we relate upon is the issue of the joint commission
04:33 that is going to meet towards the end of the year, and we have an outstanding MOUs, which
04:40 both of us have agreed to accelerate the process, and where we should find ways to resolve and
04:48 then hopefully sign prior to the, or during the commission meeting.
04:55 Thank you, and can I just invite my colleague, the Honorable, respected President Ferdinand
05:05 Marcos Jr. to say a few words.
05:09 Thank you, Your Excellency.
05:12 The honored members of the Philippine delegation and the members here representing the Malaysian
05:18 government, the members of the media, ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon.
05:25 First and foremost, I would like to express my appreciation for their majesties and the
05:30 King and Queen of Malaysia for their very gracious invitation for me to undertake this
05:36 state visit to Malaysia.
05:39 During our audience with their majesties this morning, we spoke of longstanding relations
05:45 and strong economic linkages between the Philippines and Malaysia, as well as the commonalities
05:51 between our peoples which make our friendship easy.
05:56 This afternoon, the Prime Minister and I recalled his successful official visit to Manila last
06:02 March.
06:05 In the spirit of exploring synergies for future partnerships, we agreed to convene the next
06:13 Philippine-Malaysia Joint Commission meeting in the near future.
06:18 I believe the date that we decided upon was around sometime in October.
06:27 We do this so that our government agencies will have an avenue to discuss priority cooperation
06:34 in detail, most especially in the areas of transnational crimes, agriculture, halal industry,
06:43 Islamic banking, education, tourism, and culture, sports, and the digital economy.
06:51 We continue to work on the corresponding MOUs in these fields and will have them signed
06:58 in the near future.
07:01 Building on our bilateral relations, our governments commit to closely coordinate efforts to build
07:07 capacity in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in southern Philippines, in Muslim Mindanao,
07:14 especially on sectors such as the halal industry, Islamic banking, and food security.
07:24 Malaysia has warmly offered their expertise to train Philippine personnel and officials
07:29 to strengthen our capabilities in these increasingly important sectors.
07:35 And once again, I made an expression of gratitude to the Prime Minister and as well to the King
07:45 earlier today, an expression of gratitude for all the help that we have received from
07:51 Malaysia and southern Philippines.
07:53 It has been an important part of whatever success that we might enjoy today.
07:59 And that has been a foothold, a further foothold for us to use to continue to develop and promote
08:09 our relations between our two countries.
08:12 We also agreed to enhance our trade and investment ties with each other.
08:17 With Malaysia being one of the leading halal economies in the world, cooperation in this
08:22 sector would mutually benefit the growth of our respective halal ecosystems.
08:29 Reorganizing, sorry, recognizing the importance of ASEAN centrality, we reaffirm our commitment
08:38 to support our activities within the context of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
08:45 and the BIMP-IAGA, or the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines East Asian Growth Area.
08:52 However, having said that, we also agreed that we can explore not only along multilateral
09:01 lines all of the issues that are facing us in the region, but also that there is use
09:08 as well, there is utility as well, in us promoting a bilateral relationship, especially between
09:15 Malaysia and the Philippines and our other partners in ASEAN.
09:21 And I think that this is an important aspect, this will be an important aspect to all the
09:26 issues that ASEAN is presently facing and to all the issues that the member states are
09:33 presently worrying about.
09:35 So I am quite pleased to reiterate my deepest gratitude to the Government of Malaysia and
09:43 the people of Malaysia for this very warm welcome that you have given us, our delegation,
09:48 the First Lady.
09:50 And as I mark my second year as President of the Philippines, this state visit not only
09:55 attests to the importance we place on Malaysia as a neighbor and as a partner in ASEAN, but
10:02 also reaffirms the Philippines' commitment to further cultivating our bonds and friendship,
10:09 especially as we look forward to celebrating our 60th anniversary of formal diplomatic
10:17 relations with Malaysia next year.
10:20 Thank you.
10:21 Mahalang salamat.
10:22 Mahalang salamat.
10:23 Thank you very much.
