00:00 Since his creation in the 60s, McLaren has often aligned on the grid of promising rookies.
00:04 Landon Norris, who is now a value on the board, Lewis Hamilton of course,
00:08 who has gone from nothing to being champion from his first season,
00:11 and Oscar Piastri seems to follow in the footsteps of his elders for now.
00:14 The Australian driver comes out of a particularly successful weekend at Silverstone,
00:17 which highlights the very good season he is having.
00:20 Because yes, if he performed a high-flying performance in England,
00:23 Piastri is actually imposed as the best rookie on the grid from his first F1 races.
00:27 So from a statistical point of view, he is still below his teammate.
00:30 42 points for Norris, 17 for Piastri.
00:32 It's true that it's a pretty big difference, but it doesn't necessarily reflect reality.
00:36 At Silverstone, when the two cars were experiencing the same evolution,
00:39 at one or two things close, we can see that he was in the same time as his teammate.
00:42 Barely a tenth of a difference in qualifying, and a rhythm that is sensibly similar during the Sunday race.
00:47 Piastri was also very close to being invited to the podium for the first time.
00:50 It was a safety car race.
00:52 All these good performances made this good old Zach Brown, McLaren's boss, react.
00:56 He even went so far as to declare someone in his team a future world champion.
01:00 Just that.
01:01 Well, it's less common for a team manager in his driver's license.
01:04 And maybe he's a little bit jealous.
01:05 However, and tell me if I'm wrong, but I have the feeling that most observers,
01:09 that is, the media, the spectators, the paddock, etc.
01:12 know that they have a special talent there.
01:14 A driver full of future, who only asks for a good car to prove what it's worth.
01:17 Is Oscar Piastri really as strong as Zach Brown says?
01:20 What should we expect from him?
01:21 And do we have a driver to count on in the coming years?
01:24 That's what we're going to see in this video, let's go.
01:26 If you follow the channel regularly, you know that I like to make this kind of videos in case study mode on the grid drivers.
01:34 I did it for Sergio Perez, Nick De Vries, Alex Albon more recently, and now Oscar Piastri.
01:39 In some cases, to understand the expectations that can be around a driver,
01:42 it seems necessary to take a look in the mirror,
01:44 to look at what he did well or badly before his arrival in Formula 1.
01:48 For Piastri, it's very simple.
01:49 There is almost nothing to remember about his career before his arrival at McLaren.
01:53 Formula 1 champion at the Eurocup in 2019,
01:55 Formula 1 champion in 2020,
01:57 Formula 1 champion in 2021,
01:58 it's an extraordinary performance that opened the doors of Formula 1.
02:02 Finally, we can talk more about doors that were opened in the first place,
02:05 since he found himself only reserve driver at Alpine,
02:07 which at the time seemed totally crazy.
02:09 He had won 3 prestigious titles in a row, I don't know what he could do more.
02:13 You know it as well as me, F1 is above all a story of opportunities.
02:17 For example, Guan Yuzo won at Alfa Romeo in 2022,
02:20 while he is also a young Alpine driver, and he just finished lower than Piastri in Formula 2.
02:24 The financial aspect and the opening on the Chinese market of course weighed heavily.
02:28 At the time, there was no opportunity at Alpine,
02:30 and even for 2023, the future seemed to be blocked.
02:33 Remember that before the summer, everyone was waiting for Fernando Alonso to extend.
02:37 The only track for him was Williams, with a much less sexy single-seater at Alpine.
02:41 As a result, Oscar's friend and his manager Mark Weber discussed with McLaren,
02:45 who was trying to get rid of a disappointing Daniel Ricciardo, at all costs.
02:48 You know the rest of this story.
02:50 Alonso filled Justin Martin, Alpine announced to replace him with Piastri,
02:53 Piastri went crazy a few hours later, and he ended up signing with McLaren at the end of last season.
02:57 Despite a well-stocked Palmares and a status of "best driver of his generation",
03:01 the arrival of Oscar Piastri in Formula 1 was not easy at all.
03:04 And you will admit that it is still something surprising.
03:06 Anyway, he is now well settled in Formula 1,
03:09 for the great happiness of McLaren fans and his Australian fans.
03:12 Now, after 10 races in Formula 1, what impression did he leave us?
03:16 At the beginning of the season, it was perhaps one of the 3 drivers I was most looking forward to discover,
03:20 because he is obviously one of the most promising drivers for a long time.
03:23 To be honest with you, he left me a little indifferent on the first 5 races.
03:27 Not that he was not good, but he did not catch my eye.
03:29 This is explained by his results.
03:31 DNF, P15, P11, P19, and still a nice P8 at home, in Australia.
03:36 8th is good, but given the context of this race and all his stops,
03:39 I tend not to take it into account.
03:41 If he did not particularly highlight it, his single-seater is also there for a lot.
03:45 After all, the car was really not extraordinary at the beginning of the year.
03:48 But there has been an evolution since the Azerbaijan GP,
03:51 both for Piastri and his squirrel.
03:53 The first improvements were made on the two cars,
03:56 which did not really give a flamboyant result,
03:58 but which laid the foundations for a new aerodynamic concept,
04:00 whose positive feedback is felt today.
04:03 During the next GP in Monaco, Piastri has a pretty solid weekend,
04:06 and he ends up in the points, just like his teammate.
04:09 Rather disappointing races follow for him.
04:11 0 points in Spain and Canada,
04:12 but he can console himself by saying that he ends up in front of Norris for the 2nd and 3rd time of the season.
04:16 Even if, very honestly, he was unlucky,
04:18 with an accident with Hamilton in Barcelona in particular.
04:20 This same Norris, moreover, said at the end of the Spanish GP
04:23 that even without this accident, he would probably have ended up outside the top 10.
04:26 It says a lot about the level of his single-seater at that time.
04:28 If even he says that, I don't think we can blame Piastri for not collecting points during this period.
04:33 But the real "click" for McLaren comes during the Austrian GP.
04:36 Norris only benefits from improvements, and will look for a magnificent 4th place,
04:40 while Piastri drags his speed in the middle of the grid.
04:42 After this race, he claims the same changes on his single-seater,
04:45 in order to show the spectators what he really worth.
04:48 Fortunately, he was heard,
04:49 and the least we can say is that he didn't miss his appointment at Silverstone.
04:52 3rd in qualifying, 4th at the end of the race,
04:55 he was even disappointed that he didn't get a podium that he would have deserved.
04:58 However, it is this race that today places him a little more at the center of media attention.
05:03 Let's be clear, McLaren won't have this level at every race.
05:06 It's impossible for him to be as efficient as this every time.
05:09 If you want to understand why, I invite you to watch my video on the subject.
05:11 I put the link in the description.
05:13 However, I think this result symbolizes the progress that Oscar Piastri is living.
05:17 Since the beginning of the season, I find that he is driving the Elchons at a crazy speed,
05:21 and that he already made us forget the bad experience Daniel Ricciardo had.
05:24 I'm not the one saying this, but his teammate Lando Norris,
05:26 who praised his qualities at the beginning of May.
05:28 Look at what he says.
05:29 "The way I work with Daniel and the way I work with Oscar are not very different,
05:33 except for a few details.
05:34 We don't have the same driving style,
05:36 but our requests and our complaints are generally always the same,
05:38 and that's a good thing.
05:39 Above all, he's a very fast driver,
05:41 and I feel more under pressure today than in previous seasons."
05:44 This last sentence is both brutal and unfortunately screaming of truth.
05:47 Daniel Ricciardo never seemed comfortable with McLaren,
05:50 and his assessment of last season is absolutely catastrophic.
05:53 So we know that this car is difficult to control,
05:55 that its aerodynamic concept does not correspond to Daniel Ricciardo's qualities,
05:58 nor to his driving style,
05:59 and that's one of the reasons that explains this failure.
06:01 But there is something else that made his life difficult,
06:04 and it's simply Lando Norris.
06:06 Today, and despite all the promises that Piastri has shown,
06:08 it is very clear that Norris is better than his teammate.
06:11 All proportions kept, he's a bit like the Max Verstappen of McLaren.
06:14 Since 2021, he's been sticking to his teammates.
06:17 He's invited to the podium at least once a season,
06:19 he's the leader McLaren needs.
06:21 I think it's important to clarify this,
06:23 because we necessarily judge the performance of a sportsman by the quality of his opponent.
06:27 To make a small comparison with tennis,
06:29 Carlos Alcarraz won Wimbledon this weekend,
06:31 at the end of an incredible match with Novak Djokovic,
06:34 that is to say, the best opponent he could meet.
06:37 This has a very positive impact on his reputation,
06:39 and the perception that the spectators have of his level of play.
06:42 For Oscar Piastri, it's the same thing.
06:44 So be careful, I'm not telling you that Lando Norris is the equivalent of Novak Djokovic,
06:48 but he's facing a hell of a client.
06:50 If we rely on pure and hard statistics, Norris is logically ahead.
06:53 42 points against 17,
06:54 average starting position on the starting grid at 9.20 for Norris,
06:57 against 11.5 for Piastri,
06:59 9-1 in qualifying in favor of Norris once again.
07:01 Well, not sure that the Oscar friend displays the stats on his CV for now.
07:05 But one thing I like,
07:06 is the average position of the two drivers at the start of the season.
07:09 And here, it's pretty tight.
07:10 11.1 for Norris,
07:12 against 11.9 for Piastri.
07:14 With such a gap in qualifying,
07:15 and such a gap in level,
07:17 I think it's a really good result.
07:19 And let's not forget that,
07:20 Oscar Piastri is a rookie.
07:22 A rookie prepared for F1,
07:24 who raced a lot with Alpine in Tesla last year,
07:26 in simulators too,
07:27 but he had never raced in free practice or in a race situation,
07:30 unlike Logan Sartle and Tony DeVries for example.
07:32 Yes, Norris is better,
07:34 and the opposite would be surprising.
07:35 But he knows a very fast adaptation to this new environment.
07:38 It's also important to say that his car is really hard to master.
07:41 Look at what Daniel Ricciardo did last year.
07:44 Being able to be so close to Norris at the start of the season,
07:46 is something that should not be underestimated.
07:49 Honestly, I'm not sure that some other confirmed drivers from the grid would have done as well as him.
07:53 Doing that with so little experience,
07:55 proves his immense qualities.
07:57 In fact, since always,
07:58 Oscar Piastri was prepared to be a F1 driver.
08:00 I read an excellent article from Motorsport about it,
08:03 it's in premium version and in English,
08:04 but I'll leave you the link in the description if you want to read it.
08:07 To sum up, he benefited from an extremely strict training schedule.
08:10 He showed extreme discipline on all the details of his life,
08:13 from a nutrition point of view, training,
08:15 organization of his personal life,
08:16 and it's something surprising for such a young driver.
08:19 The success in Formula 1 depends almost entirely on the performance of the car,
08:23 but it's all these little details that can allow him to go one level higher.
08:26 Piastri is therefore a driver who impresses by his results and his maturity.
08:29 He is now in an interesting project,
08:31 where he should have a few opportunities to shine from time to time.
08:34 He must of course still progress.
08:35 In terms of racing pace, he is still a little below London Norris.
08:39 In qualifying, same thing,
08:40 he will obviously have to bring more guarantees on his level to say whether or not
08:43 he has the potential to reach the upper stage.
08:46 Still, I'm happy to see him in Formula 1 today,
08:48 and I regret not seeing him at work earlier.
08:51 He's progressing at a crazy speed.
08:52 I think there is a real difference already today compared to his season start.
08:55 It's something good for McLaren that he can count on two drivers of this level.
08:59 They seem to be pushing each other to reach better performances,
09:01 and it's something that was naturally missing in London Norris' last season.
09:04 McLaren still has improvements planned from the Hungarian GP,
09:08 and I hope they will allow him to show us once again
09:10 that he has the potential to do great things in Formula 1.
09:12 Thanks for staying until the end of this video, friends.
09:15 Tell me in the comments what you think of Oscar Piastri's season for now,
09:18 if you agree with Zach Brown,
09:19 or if you think he's a little too early to judge,
09:22 I'll read all of this carefully.
09:23 As usual, I invite you to like this video, to subscribe,
09:26 activate notifications, all of that, it gives me visibility,
09:29 and it allows me to always offer you more videos.
09:31 We'll meet again very soon for a new topic.
09:33 See you next time!
